They have wonderful food and drinks. The service is friendly but it is the slowest service ever. I always have an empty drink sitting in front of me and they just really dont pay attention to you. This, mind you, is not when its even busy. The service I have had every time I have gone has been slow and awkward. But the drinks and food are good and its good cause you can sit outside.
Review Source:Might tasty!
Let's go over the fun stuff:
-Great happy hour. Goes until 6:30 7 days a week. Â Try the tacos and nachos and then come back to this review to thank me.
-Amazing green salsa. It is hotter than you think
-Good beer selection. Â
-Friendly staff
-The Nachos rival Matador's for being the best in Redmond
-The Tacos were significantly better than Matador's.
Overall, it's quite good. Â I'm holding out on star 5 because we've only been there for Happy Hour and not full dinner. Â However, if Happy Hour is any indication, dinner is probably pretty good. Â We'll do a burrito vs. burrito challenge at some point.
Everything is FRESH. Â Nothing tastes like it's out of the can here. Â
My wife and I will be coming back here.
Slightly upscale Tex-Mex at upscale prices
Want a change from the typical Las AztecIxtacas puddle of rice, beans and a huge cheese-encrusted burrito bomb? Â Spend a little more and try the interesting choices here.
Our evening started typically enough - a dim restaurant, a basket of chips, two kinds of decent salsa, both with a noticeable kick, an ordinary premium margarita. Â We ordered a masa-encrusted calamari while we pondered the menu choices. Service was not particularly communicative, but I managed to establish that I could indeed select the two accompaniments to my chili relleno, so I asked for nopalitos (advertised as corn cactus salad) and grilled asparagus.
Our calamari arrived beautifully cooked, mercifully with a sort of aioli instead of the advertised salsa (phew!). Â Our entrees followed, surprising me with a smallish if handsome cheese-decorated relleno, and the accompaniments in dishes alongside. Â No rice. No bean puddle. Â And I didn't miss them a BIT - the relleno was delicious, the grilled asparagus properly smoky and firm, and the nopalitos were a nice change (although there was no corn in sight, probably my fault for calling it nopalitos instead of corn salad!) Â I managed to sneak a bite of my wife's potatoes, and they were beautifully crisped.
While the portions were smallish, and the prices largeish, I think the quality of ingredients and the novelty of the side options will bring us back.
Love this place!
The prices are a little higher than I'd usually pay, but the food is great. It always tastes fresh and isn't greasy. The service is decent. It depends on who you get. I've had three different servers and each style was unique. Some fast, and all business, others slower with a few jokes.
We use the Pirq app and get anywhere from 20-30% off our meals when the deals are running. Just remember, if you use them, your bill should reflect a gratuity automatically added. So you don't have to tip twice.
Our favs-Steak salad, carne asada, and chicken enchiladas.
The chips, and all the salsas are also a nice treat. We look forward to trying out their happy hour next.
We stopped by for lunch at Agave, and won't be going back. The wait staff were not attentive or very welcoming, and they forgot to bring our drinks! They didn't try to charge us for them at the end, but they never apologized either. The portions were plentiful, but the food itself was mediocre at best and way overpriced compared to similar restaurants in the area.
Review Source:I came here on a Saturday night and was pleasantly surprised that happy hour was going on in the bar. Everything was great! My favorite app by FAR was the queso dip with chips...so gooey, flavorful, and addicting. Another favorite of mine was their "bar shrimp", it's not on the menu but since I had it before when Agave use to be Las Margaritas the staff knew what dish I was talking about. It was just as delicious as I remember! Other dishes that we ordered were off the happy hour menu, including taquitos, tacos, and a quesadilla. Those were good, but nothing outstanding. I would go back just for the queso dip and bar shrimp though.
Service was on the slower side, but understandable because the bartender was running the entire bar on his own. He was, however, very friendly and accommodating. Props to him!
My favorite mexican restaurant hands down! The food is amazing!
The only reason I don't give 5 stars instead of 4 is:
The inside is nice, clean, and modern; but it's nothing too exciting.
The service is good, but it isn't always on its game. (A few mixed up orders once in a while but nothing too big).
But still! Great food and a great restaurant!
Good for families and for a casual date.
I stopped in for lunch yesterday. This was my first visit to Agave. The manager seated me right away and took my drink order.
Hot chips and two salsas were promptly delivered to my table. The fire roasted salsa has habanero in it, which makes it sting a bit, but in a good way. The other salsa is tomato based and also really really good.
I ordered the nachos and came with black beans, jalapenos, cheese, sour cream and guacamole. you also have a choice of meats to add if you choose.
Overall, I'd return. they have a good selection of menu items and some creative things as well. Next time I want to try the butternut squash enchiladas!
We just moved here from Texas and have been trying to find a great neighborhood Mexican restaurant. Agave exceeded our expectations - not just a great place but a truly inventive - yet still comfortingly familiar -- Â menu with outstanding quality and service. The pineapple salsa is fantastic, and when I ordered my margarita frozen and extra spicy not only did they deliver on the promise but the bartender came to my table to make sure it was to my liking. There are many vegetarian and seafood entrees as well, including butternut squash enchiladas and an artfully prepared scallop and shrimp ceviche. Â You must try Agave - don't let the modest shopping center exterior fool you, it is warm and inviting on the inside. Thanks Agave!
Review Source:Came here with friends a while ago for happy hour (after we gave up on the horrible service someplace else) and would have given it four stars. Interesting food. Interesting drinks. Attentive service. We recently tried it out for dinner, since our usual Mexican place was undergoing some remodeling and we needed an enchilada fix and were not quite as impressed.
I tried the Cadillac Margarita. It was fancied up with Grand Marnier on the side for me to float, but the overall drink was only so-so. Her House Margarita looked even less exciting. The chips were tasty and the two kinds of salsa, plus pico de gaio, were good accompaniments.
I had the Ancho Mole Grilled Chicken. Two nicely grilled chicken breasts covered with a rather mild sauce accompanied by black beans, rice and a tasty cilantro-jicama slaw. She had two Chicken Enchiladas, which disappeared quickly, but without too much comment. Son had Carne Asada burrito, which also looked good and disappeared quickly.
Our check-in on Foursquared netted us a free dessert. We opted to share the churro. It was fresh and warm and drizzled with fudge sauce and a bit too much whipped cream. No complaints.
This could have been another four star review for the four star food, except: lackadaisical service (we didn't feel ignored, but there was little energy in the room and things took a tick too long), the uninspired drinks, the horrible tasting water, the slightly too high prices. We won't be avoiding the place, but we'll probably be back to our usual spot after the remodel.
We needed a last minute place to have a large group of people for dinner as another restaurant in Redmond had botched our reservation last Saturday.
We called and asked Agave if they could accommodate about 20 people completely expecting a "no," but they were more than happy to work it out for us.
We waited about 5 minutes when we arrived then our huge table was ready. Our service was extremely fast, helpful, and the server had a ridiculously fun personality. I honestly can't say I would have been as accommodating with a group of our size, but the folks at Agave were absolutely fantastic.
The food was great, the drinks were great, and their happy hour menu is really extensive. Would definitely recommend it to anyone.
Went here with the kids one night as we're close by and wanted to try it out.
The place was rather empty the night we went there but it was okay. Â I had the carnitas which were good.
I don't have too much to say about this place actually when I think about it. Â It is okay. Â Not bad, not great/memorable. Â It is close/convenient and we would likely be back for a night out for some mexican food.
Better experience this time. Came for lunch had the Carne Asada. Â Meat was cooked good. I know some don't like a bit of char taste but I do. The flavor of the carne asada wasn't the best I have had. I didn't pick up the lime taste or marinade that carne asada would have. Â But it cooked well not overly done where it would be rubbery.
Review Source:This has decent food and is priced decently. I wouldn't come here for a night out or on a special occassion but if you just want to get something to eat then this is good enough. The service is polite, efficient and quick. The ambience is good - the music is not too loud. Overall, a solid average 3 star place.
Review Source:I don't get the amazing reviews either. I have been here and it has been really great, but most of the time in the last year it has been really awful. We go because it is convenient and I keep wishing that this time will be redeeming for Agave. Did Isay it's convenient?
On Friday night after a week at camp my daughter was craving Mexican. Like I said this is convenient and it was 8 pm. Food was awful and service was the same...
They were not busy at all maybe 5 tables. Had to ask for service. Forgot half the order.  Carne  asada was burnt, chimichanga had this disgusting white sauce that tasted sour over the top of it. Really?? I picked out the meat and did not eat anything else. The  server asked me if I wanted something else...that was nice. He also agreed that nowhere else has he seen this kind of sUce on a chimi. Disappointing again.
I think I'm done with convenience. Food is not good and for a Mexican joint it is expensive.
I don't get all the top reviews. Came here for dinner with friends.
Expansive menu with lots of options. I eventually settled on the fried fish tacos with a side of spinach and the black beans. The fish reminded me of fish sticks, not nice freshly-fried fish. The spinach tasted strange. The beans were fine.
On the plus side, their after-dinner mints on the way out were delicious.
With Ooba's in town, why on earth would anyone eat here?
I've been here enough times that I owe a few of my pounds to Agave. Â Instead of damning their hide, I'll just raise my pint glass and say thanks. Â It was through a yelp deal that I tried this place. Â And I'm so very glad I did. Â
As far as the food goes, have a chimichanga. Â Or three. Â The crema sauce on top is decadent and delicious. Â I've tried tacos, nachos, mole, flautas, enchiladas and the taco salad here. Â I've happy with all but the taco salad (heavy on the lettuce, light on everything else). Â The chimichanga is my favorite dish. Â I also am totally keen on the side options they offer. Â Cactus salad? Â Why yes. Â Asparagus? Â Hells to the yes! Â Pinto beans with caramelized onions? Â Swoon -- YES! Â So yum.
They have a very decent and tasty happy hour. Â Try a taco or five. Â Have a margarita but only the house margarita are available in the HH offerings. Â I would definitely try a prickly pear margarita if you're alcohol-inclined. Â It's sweet but not sickly so. Â They have Dos XX amber on tap but if they ever serve the lager as a draft, I may never leave. Â
My only word of warning: death salsa. Â Um, I mean, the hot green salsa. Â The red salsa and chips they give you upon arrival are tasty and irresistible. Â When I stopped in to pick up a to-go order, the bartender offered me some of the verde salsa to take along. Â I have a very mild tongue. Â Like Taco Bell mild sauce. Â It's a wimpy tongue, what can I say? Â My girlfriend was smart enough to try the death salsa before covering her food with it. Â She loves spicy food, loves the sweating misery, red cheeks and fever that comes along with it. Â She loved the death salsa but agreed that it was best enjoyed in small amounts.
I love this place and wish I had known about it sooner. Most of the time Mexican food is average and is pretty much the same everywhere you go. Here is not so much the case!
They have very unique, healthy and fresh dishes that I've never seen before. They have cool sides like grilled asparagus, Jicama slaw or beans with caramelized onions. I've so far had the fish tacos and enchiladas with the white sauce and slivered almonds on top. Everything has be tasty so far!
The prickly pear margarita is really good, too!
I love the atmosphere. It is very relaxing and warm. Very inviting. I never would have suspected if I wasn't told about it here. I'm glad I know now. :)
Walked in at 9:30 PM with over twenty people from the band. We were seated very efficiently, served drinks within 5 mins and dinner in 15+ mins. As we were jabbering away, we really didn't notice how good the service was. Late comers, no problem.
The food was fresh, excellently prepared, and tasty. There was a fine selection of beers. What an enjoyable place.
I have decided to dub this place "Home of the $5 Holla"
At a recent  Happy hour meet-up w/ Kate and Kristin, and some of their co-workers, here is what I found:
Good HH menu, with pretty much across the board pricing at $5 and decent sized portions.
Not the greatest margaritas if you go for the $5 special, but you have options of half off shots and other specials during a later happy hour within the happy hour
Service was spotty. Half the time, we couldn't get their attention to save our lives, which is a sad commentary, as we were the largest group and the only woman in the joint. The other half of the time, we were being serviced by both the Host and the bartender non-stop. Now we couldn't get them to leave us alone!
They split the check out nicely, albeit unconventionally, so I would either (a) be very specific you want separate checks, or (b) keep your group small-ish on future visits to avoid problems.
The lighting kept automatically reducing to lower and lower levels, in some sort of "Countdown to Sexytime" fashion.
Overall, I think I'd visit again, but it would take a Kristin and Kate HH to do it, probably.
So this is apparently the closest Bar to my apt. I have lived in Redmond for 8 months now and just learned that. It's an ok destination for drinks and Happy Hour with your friends, but I wasn't impressed enough with the food to spend the outrageous prices they have for their regular menu items.
The chips and salsa were ok, but you could tell they weren't super fresh. I enjoyed the beef taquito that I ordered off of the Happy Hour menu. The beef was flavorful, and the guacamole was pretty yummy.
The margaritas aren't the best in the world, but for $5 during Happy hour and all day on Mondays, its a pretty good deal. Also, on Tuesday it's half off all tequila, and you can make that a margarita for only $2 more. So if you get the super cheap Jose Cuervo, you can get more $5 margaritas... just sayin'.
The service, while slow, was very good. The bartender and manager did a good job of taking care of our rowdy group, splitting checks, getting more chips and salsa and drinks. They were very friendly and tried hard to get us everything we needed in a timely manner. There are no servers in the Bar area, which was really weird to me since the rest of the HUGE restaurant was literally empty. When I got there there were only 2 tables being used, and when I left it was the same. The bar filled up fairly quickly though, which was cool.
I would go here again in a pinch, or if I am being lazy, or just really want a margarita. But I wouldn't go out of my way to come here again.
Decent tex-mex at decent happy hour prices.
Pretty much everything on their HH menu will cost you $5 a pop. Tacos, quesedillas, and a giant plate of nachos all $5. Margaritas? Weak -- but only $5. Â After the previously mentioned nachos and 2 'ritas I was ridiculously full and not breaking the bank. Â And sort of blissed out on really tasty guacamole.
Service was as good as it could be considering it was the bartender serving us and an ever growing after-work crowd. He happily split the check, brought us more chips, etc.
Not the best, not the worst. I'll come back if im ever in the area (which is next to never) and someone suggests it for nibbles between the hours of 4pm- 6pm/
The chips and salsa were average. The chips were pretty bland but the salsa was nice. Not very spicy but a good cilantro flavor.
The soft tacos were good but the portions were quite small for almost $13. The chicken ones were not liked, the carne asada ones were solid and the Prawn ones were very nice.
Veggie fajitas were plentiful and tasty.
Good drink menu and a few cute waitresses. Service was not on the speedy side but they came around often.
Dessert was great!!! Hot lava cake and the fried ice cream were huge hits!!!
I was very sad when Las Margaritas closed, but little did I know that an even better restaurant would be taking it's place! Agave is not only a great place to dine in, but also a great place to call in an order for takeout if you're too lazy to cook that night.
The atmosphere is a little darker and modern looking, which I really liked. Decorations were fun to look at while dining in; especially the chandelier. Service has always been great and prices are reasonable if you're on a budget.
About 98 percent of the time I get the same thing, two enchilada meal with one cheese and one ground beef. Always hits the spot! The refried beans and rice are the perfect compliment to the enchiladas. I also enjoyed the carne asada (sp?). My boyfriend goes crazy for the steak salad.
The only reason I gave five stars is because the last time my better half and I ordered takeout, they forgot the tortillas. When he called to ask about the missing tortillas, the person on the phone was kind enough to tell us to ask for him next time we're in and he'll take care of us. So possibly in the near future, those four stars may turn into five.
I'm getting hungry just thinking about Agave! Don't resist temptation, try it out!
I would not recommend Agave. We were big fans of Las Margaritas and were very excited to give the new place a shot. The double menu was a nice gesture and we actually took them up on the offer to try something from the new menu.
All in all, here is our unfortunate feedback. We orded the fish tacos with the jicama slaw.
- asparagus was good
- portions were small
- food was very bland
- prices were high
- AC was on way too high
- totally empty during dinner
This was very sad for us as that was our staple Mexican restaurant near home. Now the we're back to the drawing board to find another. Â I would recommend going here for the environment but not the food - and maybe drinks but that review will need to wait for another day.
My gf's mother invited us here on Labor Day to celebrate my birthday. Â After reading some of the comments, I actually had some concerns about bland food and poor service. Â Upon entering the restaurant, I was happily surprised by the cleanliness and the friendly greeting. Â We were promptly seated and started to read the menu, which was well layed out and full of fun dishes! Â After waiting for about 10 minutes, we had to call a server over to get our drinks. Â As much of a PIA this was, I still had a positive vibe and from that point forward, the waiter was very attentive and polite. Â We ordered and got our food VERY quickly, and it was really good! Â We tried the seafood enchiladas, beef tamales, and a steak salad. Â All 3 were really delicious and highly recommended. Â
We will be back, and I sincerly hope we don't have another delay. Â The food is great but without decent service, it won't last IMHO.
Fresh hand-made tortillas, daily!
Man, I eat a lot of Mexican cuisine. Â So I'm driving through Redmond on my way home and thinking of where to stop for some good Mexican, knowing full well that this town is void of any great choices, and Taco Time is simply not an option. Â Thankfully the Yelp App saved me, and I ended up at what I thought was still Las Margaritas, but is now Agave Cocina. Yay! The food gods are smiling on me.
They are creative, which I like, but not so creative that it turns you off.  It's a major step up from Las Margaritas (sorry people, but drowning food in melted cheddar cheese does not make it automatically delicious).  I ate the Grilled Jalapeños which are stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped in bacon.  Good flavor with the pineapple-serrano salsa.
I also ate the Natural Grilled Chicken Tortilla Soup which definitely had nice grilled chicken in it. It was a little cheesy for my taste, but the broth was so flavorful. Â The Grilled Halibut taco must be had with the chimichurri salsa. Â I would love it if they stepped up the mole flavor in the Shredded Chicken taco and tossed a little fresh avocado on the tortilla soup.
I would rate this place even higher if they had some traditional entrées, like Pollo Con Mole or Pollo ala Diabla for me to enjoy the fresh tortillas with. Hopefully they will add in some of my faves.
First of all, we are biased. Â Growing up, Las Mas was one of our favorite restaurants, and we were so sad to see it change. Â We held out a long time, refusing to try the new Agave. Â However, we were pleasantly surprised. Â True, it does not have the same ambience that Las Mas once had. Â However, the new decor is nice, the food and drinks were great, and we received excellent service. Â I got a mojito and my family got margaritas, and all were good. Â The seafood enchillada was a hit, and I like the chicken fajitas at Agave more than those of Las Mas. Â
Only cons we found:
#1: It's not Las Mas.
#2: No Margarita pitchers.
#3: No chocolate mints with your check.
Otherwise, great experience!
Formerly Las Margaritas - soon to be for lease!
One star is generous. From the time we got there until food arrived was thirty minutes, and it was NOT busy - I could count the patrons on one hand. We walked in and through the place and the waitress was in a corner on the phone. The table lighting is terrible, the new décor is expensive and so are the prices - too expensive. Why charge me eleven dollars for seven dollars worth of food? Becaise I'm in Redmond? Guess what, I can DRIVE!
Good points - the salsa with the chips was good, and the sweet potato fries are good. The parking is plentiful.
But the location, the service, and the food are lousy!
You think this is bad? Here's what my companion has to say - strap in and hang on!
"I'm Mexican so I know good Mexican food! Aye Dios Mio!
"I have never sent back food in a Mexican Restaurant, but I did here. We waited about 20 minutes before the waitress finally came to our table. I had a hard time deciding what to order from the two menus; that should have sent the red flags flying. This food had no flavor! The rice tasted like Rice-a-Roni and the sauce on my burrito tasted like Pace Picante sauce. Took two bites and back it went to the kitchen. And hip hop in the ladies room! Aye aye aye.
"For you that don't know what good Mexican food is and how it should really taste, I can understand how you can like this food. But the owners, being of Hispanic descent, ought to be embarrassed to be serving this kind of food and passing it off as Mexican Food.
"I won't go back!"
'nuf said!
=;^)
First of all, I'm not going to compare Agave to its previous incarnation as Las Margaritas--I didn't care for the old place, and wanted to judge the new one on its own merits. But ironically the ghost of the previous establishment haunts the new one; I'll get to that shortly.
My wife and I visited the bar for happy hour the Sunday after it opened. The margaritas were fine as were the tacos we ordered as appetizers.
So a couple of weeks later we decided to try dinner in the dining room. Our favorite local Mexican restaurants are El Toreador when we want traditional Mexican, and either Matador or Cactus when we want more upscale fare. From our first visit it seemed that Agave aspired to the latter, but upon being seated in the dining room we were presented with two separate menus without explanation. Both menus had similarities, and when I asked the waitress why there was two menus she explained one was their in-house menu for their own recipes, while the other was fare that more closely mirrored what Las Margaritas used to offer.
We ordered off the in-house menu, and the food was less than spectacular. My beef fajitas were tough (and took a while to replace when they gave me the wrong sides) and my wife's tamale had a peculiar flavor. As far as the food goes I might revisit the bar for happy hour but not return for dinner.
Though the sub-par food was reason enough to form this opinion it is reinforced by the fact that the owners seem to want to have it both ways: retain the family clientele that its predecessor drew, and attract the adult crowd with more upscale fare. What that says to me is they lack the confidence in their own selections or their ability to come up with one menu that has something for everyone. They need to eventually pare the two menus down to one with items that define them, or else they will continue to entertain the ghost of Las Margaritas and not create a real identity of their own.
This place used to be called LasMargaritas.
This place used to have AWESOME chips and salsa made in house.
This place used to have a decent queso blanco (jalapeño jack cheese dip).
This place used to have GREAT margaritas (their former namesake).
Now the place is called Agave.
Now their chips are comparable to what you'd get in a bag at Fred Meyer, same for the salsa... but not chunky or picante.. like Pace... more runny and bland. Think taco-seasoned spaghetti sauce that isn't really spicy.
Now their pepper-jack cheese dip is just white cheddar (not even pepperjack), melted... with four or five thinly sliced jalapeño rings in a line on top.
Now their margaritas are served LUKE WARM in a plain LOWBALL glass.
I rarely give a low review, but considering how few people were there during happy hour, the slow service I got was inexcusable.
I'd like to give them another chance, and maybe I will. But considering the other choices available in Redmond for Mexican (contemporary, authentic, tex-mex, etc...there are A LOT), I doubt it will be any time soon.
Personally, I wouldn't waste your time.
I happened onto this new restaurant just by chance tonight and was pleasantly surprised at what great food they served . Â Open for only one month, once this catches on, it will be standing room only. Â
If you love fresh food and a totally different menu than your run-of-the-mill Mexican restaurant around every corner..... this is one you will truly enjoy. Â Nothing greasy, not heavy cheese laden but light, filling and the best tasting ever! Â There is a similar fine Mexican restaurant in downtown Kirkland, that also serves only fresh vegetables, homemade chips, etc., etc. it is more expensive though and I would have to say Agave Cocina & Cantina tops it all around.
Right next door to the new, soon to open, Ross in Redmond..... give it a try! Â Hats off to something new and different. Â I would give this 10 stars if I could.
