I thought I had written a review for this place? So if it is a repeat Sorry!
I think it is the best Mexican place in Roanoke! For food, they dont always understand what you ask for.
    Food counts for more! LOL
it could be cleaned better in front of house? Makes me wonder what the back looks like.

Good place for Mexican food. I love the idea of the salsa bar, there are so many great salsas and dips to choose from. The food is pretty good too, just about like any other Mexican place around Roanoke. I like the downtown location because of the outdoor seating. The prices are fair too. Great place for lunch.

I visited here back in April when I was in Roanoke, and it was good enough that I decided to go again now that I'm back in town! The chips and salsa bar was definitely my favorite part, but my burrito was also good as well. They seem to be a pretty happening lunch spot, but even though they were busy my food arrived quickly. I'd definitely visit again next time I happen to be in Roanoke.

Hands down the best lunch in town!  $5.50 gets you a combo, drink, and chips and salsa bar.  You do have to get your own drinks and chips, but food comes out real quick, and is my favorite place to go.

Great place to get Mexican. Not much for atmosphere and service was a bit slow but it made up for its shortcomings with the great food. Chips and salsa bar had plenty of choices which were all fantastic. Food was tasty and hot upon arrival and the margaritas were good. A little too good!

Used to be great place to get Mexican food! I soon realized that they keep tabs on their customers, how often one comes and how often one tips. Generally, when the the whole experience is good we tip (ie: food and the service), however today the waiter confronted us and demanded that we pay a tip in addition to the bill. We were speechless, when he asked that why is there no tip written on the receipt. Usually I tip 15%, when the service and the food is good. However, I have never experienced gratuity being demanded!! They have certainly lost my business.

Nice little spot in downtown roanoke. Pretty standard mexican menu but cool salsa/queso/nacho bar free with any order.  Busy but service was excellent.

Some of the best Mexican I've had anywhere north of Texas. I can't even tell you why... it's just delicious. Fast and friendly service and just the right level of divey to give it great atmosphere. Awesome margaritas.

This place was amazing. Loved the chicken taco salad! If you ever find yourself in Roanoke, definitely worth a try! The place was also packed! I'm not sure if that's the norm or not.

Went here for lunch with my family and three of us were suffering from food poisoning within 24 hours. The food was good but this will probably keep me from coming back in the future.

I've tried a variety of things on the menu at Alejandro's but I can't recommend anything other than the Chicken Fajitas. This has become my favorite dish at the restaurant and I never order anything else there anymore. It's a great combination of chicken, peppers, and onions and I order it with a side of black beans and rice. This dish along with the chips & salsa bar make Alejandro's my favorite Mexican restaurant in Roanoke.

2 Words:  Super Busy.  Came down for 1st Fridays.  Food was good.  In my experience, sevice wasn't great but the food was very good and I do recommend eating here.  I don't recommend the margarita.  The mix was TOO sweet.

I am a fan.  Just sorry that it is so far from my house.  We had a great dinner and the Alejandro's margarita was out of this world - still trying to find a recipe for it.  We had the  diablo steak taco and fish taco.  both great.  The salsa bar is a great touch which kept us busy as we waited for our food.  Great selection. Would have had all stars if the bathrooms were clean.  My wife and kids were disgusted.

Up here in Roanoke with friend and her family on the 4th of July vacation week.  Stopped in here after doing some shopping in the nearby area for some quick Mexican grub.

I like their selection of salsa with the chips.  Lunch items are inexpensive if you choose from their limited menu, but it's filling enough when you add the chips/salsa.  It's a very small place, somewhat serve yourself once you've ordered/paid at the counter.  More along the lines of a Moe's with an actual menu.

Very good. $11.54 for four enchiladas a drink (unlimited refills) and a salsa bar with about 15 different salsas.

I always get the same thing here, but it's always delicious.  The Mexican style tacos come out with two soft corn tortillas, onion, cilantro, and whatever meat you pick (the grilled chicken has great flavor to it, the chorizo is porky heaven).  Simple, straight forward, delicious.  The salsa bar is awesome.  Get an Alejandro's margarita, it has chamborde in it (yummmms).

Noisy, always bustling, but with attentive staff.  I always bump into someone I know, as everyone who lives in Roanoke and craves TexMex will someday find themselves here.  Good food, cheap, and tasty.

Only four stars? Bah! Alejandros is five star for sure. The only drawback is trying to find a seat. People love the salsa bar sporting no less than 8 different salsas. The fajita burrito is excellent.

I saw some reviews saying this was the best Mexican food in Roanoke. Now, sorry, not to sound like a snob (too much) but that's not really saying much. Well, I haven't been to too many Mexican restaurants in Roanoke, but after eating here I'm sure that's a pretty safe bet.

The food here was absolutely terrific. They have all the standard chain type tex mex, but some more authentic type options as you might find in Veracruz or Sonora. The chicken chilango was really delicious with wonderfully tender crisp cooked vegetables and a perfectly moist chicken breast with a delicious sauce that was sort of a cross between Mexican tomato sauce and mole. The enchiladas were what you'd expect and hope the chain standard to be - identifiable  tastes and textures instead of a mess of mystery meat and cheese.

The salsa bar is just great - all the varieties were really delicious and fresh tasting, with a few unique varieties.

And to top it all off - $35 dinner for 2 with a couple beers and a mega margarita!! At Rosa Mexicana in DC or NY that would buy you just the drinks and frankly the food wouldn't be as good!

Mexican is pretty low on my totem pole of food options, but I'd be back here all the time if I were local. Alejandros is a gem!

My last experience at this restaurant was not favorable. I found a small chicken bone in my California burrito... but I only found it after it stuck in the roof of my mouth. Needless to say, that left a bad taste in my mouth! I've always been a big fan of Alejandro's but I doubt I will be able to revisit after that experience.

I always enjoyed the salsa bar, and the margaritas sitting outside downtown on a nice afternoon watching traffic pass by...

Step it up, guys. It's probably not uncommon for bones to find their way into food, but it just seems unacceptable to me. In my eyes, it was no different than finding a hair or something else that should not be in my food--except it HURT!

I'm giving Alejandro's three out of five stars because all of my prior experiences have been uneventful. I do feel like the restaurant has gotten a little sloppy and gone down hill in terms of overall taste and quality since opening, but I will eventually be willing to give them another chance and I hope they take this into consideration to prevent it from happening again. I don't want to see Alejandro's go anywhere!

Ok, so Alejandro's is solid tex-mex. it's no more, no less. the people who work there are really nice and the salsa bar has a variety of salsas from tomato based, pico de gallo, chipotle, sweeter salsas, and non spicy for those of you who fear the jalapeno. I've had the cochinita pibil, burritos, tacos and all of them have been decent food. however, i think the rice and the beans are a little lacking. i don't find that they add to the meal at all, they just seem to take up space on my plate. all of that aside, it's a solid 3 star place

Very good Mexican style food, especially for Roanoke. Great atmosphere and downtown location.

Hands down better than all the other "EL" Mexican restaurants in the area.

In a town full of "Mexican food" options, I'd have to say that this is one of the better ones.  Notice the quotes.  They aren't typos.

I've had the fish tacos and I liked them.  They weren't dry and they had good flavor to them.  The salsa bar really isn't all that special but should satisfy the many palates of whatever group you travel with.  (Everybody has that one person who only eats bland non-spicy food...and if you claim your group doesn't have one, then you are that person.)

Service was good and yes, this is a sit down restaurant.  Parking is on the street.

Overall, I like the place.  If you want real authentic hardcore Mexican food, go to one of the food trucks on Williamson Rd.  You'll find me there.

It's a decent place, and I would go back. I really enjoyed that they have a salsa bar, which makes it a lot more fun than you would think.

The food quality was okay, nothing great. It tasted like most other Mexican places in town and was around the same price range. The best things going for it are the nice downtown location and the salsa bar.

Great, great, great Mexican food.  The ingredients were probably the freshest that I've had at a Mexican joint for the price.  Portions weren't huge- but the salsa bar had plenty of offerings to fill up on with experimentation.  Their Green Salsa was especially good.

Prices are good for the quality of the food, and the location is awesome- right in the heart of downtown.

It's more than suspicious that Alejandro's is averaging 4.5 stars.

The fish tacos were lovelessly plopped on top of unheated soft shells next to a mess of parsley that I think was meant for my fish. The beef burrito was warm on the outside and cold in the middle. Several of these reviews mention Alejandro's sixteen nacho dipping options as a merit of their salsa bar. It might just as well signal a lack of confidence in any one of their salsas. Another reviewer asks, "...how can you go wrong with a giant salsa bar and fresh hot chips?" Go to Alejandro's.

Barely rising to the level of Tex-Mex, Alejandro's is the "highest rated" place for Mexican food in Roanoke. The sign says Mexican. It tastes like Tex-Mex. But they'll tell you it's Cal-Mex, California's cynical interpretation of a culture's food that is already hard enough to come by uninterpreted by Texans and anyone else claiming a border with Mexico.

And there it is on the masthead: "Alejandro's Mexican Grill." Rather than give people the false hope of Mexican, when breaking the news that it's Cal-Mex, I wish they'd just drop the "Mex." It's already been dropped from the food.

Spared from a one star review by a friendly staff and the alcohol content of their wheatgrass-green margaritas. Surf's up, dude.

Alejandro's is one of the best Mexican restaurants I've ever visited. They have a huge menu so there is something for everyone. But it's not so big that many of the plates lack attention or quality. Everything I've eaten in my 8-10 visits has been good or great. The fried fish tacos (Roasado fish tacos) come to mind. But the salsa bar is king! Chips and salsa are requisite for Mexican restaurants, but not 10 different types of house made salsa like this place offers! Also, don't miss out on $2 corona all day every day.

The salsa bar was great, the dishes were interesting and the setting was pleasant.

On the other hand the service wasn't very fast, the food was slightly pricey for the quality (good, but not blowing other mexican places out of the water), and the portions were adequate, but not generous.

Alejandro's has more inventive dishes than your average Mexican place so it's very much worth the visit.

We always come here when we go to Roanoke. This is the original location.  Salsa bar beats anything you have ever seen or eaten - even in California where burritos and baja tacos are king.  Not saying their fish tacos beat San Diego, California, just their salsa bar!

Fish tacos can be grilled or fried, single order or triple order.  No cabbage =( just fish, corn tortilla, onions, cilantro.  But delish!  Spicy beef tacos are also muct have - very spicy though.

Ceviche - a okay.  I could not finish it - texture made me nervous after a few large bites.  Maybe just in my head.

Simply the best Mexican food we've had - not too greasy and one colored like most places.  You dont feel like an enchilada waiting to be rolled over after you are done eating - a good thing.

We went back here for lunch on Thursday. I had the quesadillas with carnitas which isn't on the menu per se but when I asked if I could have it, the waiter agreed. Yay! It was fab.

Again, the salsa bar astounded me. I tried even more varieties and my belly was happy. The owner is from Northern California and truly this is better than much Mexican food I have had in the Los Angeles area.

It's official: Alejandro's is my fave restaurant in Roanoke.

Alejandro's is hands down the best Mexican food in Roanoke. The options are generally cheap and fresh, with choices for hardcore meat eaters and vegetarians alike. The place gets crowded quickly on weekends, but the food is generally worth the wait.

But what really got me (and everyone else in town) was the salsa bar, with fresh chips and a variety of salsas that included pretty much any variation on the classic tex mex dip that you could ask for: thin, red, and mild; chunky with cactus and onion; spicy, thick, and roasted; green and tangy, it's all there along with some things you'd never imagined.

In short, Alejandro's is great because the food is good and the people are family and everyone there is treated well and served as quick as the servers can handle during their daily rush.

This place is, for lack of a better term, BANGIN'. Even in the multicultural maze that is my hometown (Queens, NY) it is seriously difficult to find authentic Mexican food that compares to Alejandro's. They have really nice outdoor seating right out in the heart of downtown Roanoke, so the ambiance can't be beat. (Okay, well I suppose it technically can if you're in like Paris or something... I really love Roanoke, so sue me.) The service was great, which I guess isn't saying much considering that I don't think I have ever had poor service at a Mexican restaurant... unless you count Taco Bell, but I digress...

They offer baskets upon baskets of complimentary chips, again, nothing special for a Mexican restaurant. However, they ALSO offer a really great salsa bar! Try the white sweet and spicy one... I think I developed an addiction to it.

The only annoying aspect of our dining experience was that people (tourists? There are tourists in Roanoke?) kept coming up and taking pictures with the "Alejandro's" sign... I am guessing because of the Lady Gaga song. Really?

Also, margaritas as big as your head. 'Nuff said.

RIDICULOUSLY good stuff at Alejandro's! Best Mexican restaurant in Roanoke - seriously! So let me start with the salsa bar - tons of options from mild to sweet to super spicy hot! Margaritas - num num! Chicken tacos and chicken fajitas are so deliciously good! Seriously I love this place - they never let me down!

I looooove Alejandro's. The staff is friendly and warm, the food arrives quickly and everything I have ever tried is always delicious. Plus, how can you go wrong with a giant salsa bar and fresh hot chips? They will make any dishes "custom" (I like to mix things up) and they have a great frozen Margarita.

The only reason I'm not giving them a 5 star is that their bathroom is absolutely gross. Not only is it unsanitary, it really looks like it hasn't been cleaned in years. It desperately needs a remodel-- it is cramped and is just plain scary from top to bottom. It makes me wonder about the cleanliness of the kitchen which is truly a shame.
