A coworker living in U of C area introduced me to this great place. This is the best beef I've ever had. Hands down. Been there several times. Now I'm addicted to it.
I've tried the Italian beef and Italian combo. Italian beef is better, especially with hot peppers in it - it just boosts the flavor, a lot. The beef was very thin and yet very moist. The aroma was just unbeatable! I'd like to take it home, even though the bread becomes a little soggy, so that my whole house is filled with the wonderful aroma! Fries are terrific, too.
Every visit to Al's beef was just a very satisfying experience. One sandwich can simply light up my whole day~
This Al's is even less commodious than the original. I've seen bathrooms at Starbucks that are bigger than the whole dining area here. Sure, there are chairs, but they're bolted to the floor and occupied by people waiting for their orders.
But it's the same magically-spiced, paper-thin beef Al's is known for, with Gonnella bread, proprietary giardinera, and generous au jus. Fries are skin-on and made in-house. Thursday you can get a beef meal deal - fries and a drink - for $5. Nice deal.
I think it's the best beef you can get near Hyde Park. Just plan on getting your order to go.
