I work in the Rush building but I won't be going back to this Au Bon Pain, the food is good the coffee is great but the staff is so rude - except for the check out ladies - that I will not spend any more money here. Â Go to the cafeteria they have a coffee shop where they will make you a good latte and the ladies there are super sweet.
Review Source:The poor rating isn't because of the food- they have a pretty good selection- the Caprese sandwich is actually really good, the cupcakes are sinful, but their service is below par.
The customer service the sandwich ladies provide leave much to be desired- I'm sorry that I didn't know that I needed a ticket to order a sandwich- the polite thing to do is acknowledge me and tell me so.
Greeting and smiling at customers all day is hard. I get it.
Everyone has their own problems. I get it.
Sometimes customers can be really annoying. I get it.
That's no excuse for your lack of manners and customer service.
Also, it's really pricey- I doubt I'd spend $15 on lunch here again.
Only + is that they label everything with calories- which has stopped me from purchasing that buttery soft croissant that's 400 calories.
The good thing about ABP- it's open 24 hours in the hospital.
The bad thing about ABP- it's the only thing open for 24 hours in the hospital.
I will give you that some of the soups are tasty (but please don't tell me the calorie count), that I really appreciate the variety for the salad bad (unfortunately it's not open when I work nights), or that I can refill my coffee cup for just over a dollar.
However, for a place that is supposed to be know for its sandwiches, baked goods, and premade salads, they're lacking. The sandwiches seem to have lukewarm ingredients (I'd rather have cold chicken than chicken heated for 30 seconds in the microwave) and I feel like the baked goods are always a bit dried out.
Maybe it's just because this location is located in a hospital, but I've had pretty good hospital Einstein's or Panera!
I mostly come here for the coffee.
The food is good but I can't see myself frequently paying $8-$10 for a sandwich that, in flavor, is barely better than a $3 sandwich. The soups, in my opinion, are on the bland side. But I will admit that they do have a large selection of food and snacks
I like the phrase "overpriced cafeteria food".
The food is fine. Nothing spectacular.
I do like the coffee which they do a pretty good job of keeping up with (changing it out, keeping it full). Some of the staff is nice... some...meh.
I once found a hair in my sandwich (vomit).
24/7 which is good to have that option in a hospital.
Pretty clean for how busy it always is.
So today when I went to get one of my fave Au Bon Pain sammies (#23 the Caprese) two wonderful things happened:
1. the nice sandwich prep ladies informed me that the recipe was altered and they no longer put mayo on their Caprese sandwiches - THANK GOD!! Â The Au Bon Pain big wigs listened to the masses!! Â and..
2. when I went to pay, the nice cashier lady gave me a Frequent Sandwich Buyer Card - I don't know if technically that is what it is called...but you get what I mean...you purchase 5 sandwiches, the sixth is FREE! Â This is loooong overdue Au Bon Pain! Â I will be getting my free sandwich very very soon! Â :-)
Its more expensive than other options around Rush but, totally worth it!
I've been frequenting ABP for the last 3 years and I must say that I really enjoy most of their soups, wraps and sandwiches. Some of my favorites are the tomato basil bisque, curried rice and lentil soup, caprese sandwich and the Mediterranean wrap. Their baked goodies are delectable too. Even though its a little expensive, I don't mind the price as its apparent that they use good quality ingredients.
overpriced cafeteria food.
awful coffee with questionable caffeine content.
baked goods are fine, but their caloric confessions prevent me from trying more of them.
but most of us must come here bc it's the only option inside rush. Â
earns 2 stars for being open 24/7
tip: entire store goes on 25% sale after 11pm... until 3? or 5? am.
This place is in rush hospital. I got the salad bar big container. With the salad you get free bread and you get to choose it. The salad was yummy made by me. As other reviewers had said this place is pricey but wanted to check it out for myself and it is. They have a good size seating area and its pretty nice on the eyes inside.
Review Source:My partner was in the hospital at Rush for a few days so I became really a consumer of Au Bon Pain. This location is the only food in the main building and that is open late. No matter, I headed down here for my morning coffee. Depending what you order and when, things cost differently. For example: if you buy a coffee with a sandwich, there's a bundle. It's a secret bundle, but a bundle. Otherwise, say, a coffee will cost $2 instead of 99¢ (save for the super-fine print).
The food quality and the people are good, though. For being a captive location they don't take it for granted and prices are from corporate. Everyone's super friendly. Getting an espresso drink involves flagging someone down. Usually they have someone there, but I reckon it's not too popular with drip coffees on tap and self-serve.
Granted it is inside of RUSH Hospital, but they do carry a wide assortment of goodies. Been there twice and I just prefer to do the yogurt and granola when I go. The cups are pretty good size and are moderately priced at $3 and some change. I do have to say thought that twice I had the yogurt and twice the blueberries are not to par. They are chewy and you can never quite swallow. But its still a good eat, just not a complete good eat. I think next time I will try one of their hot dishes to see why people stick around and eat here. It is a busy location but fun with a view of the city.
Review Source:I came here for a volunteer orientation, and was diasppointed to find that au bon pain was the only restaurant in the close vicinity of the hospitalI had the cheese croissant and the baja turkey sandwhich, and they were both spectacularly good. I would recommend this place, though the prices were a little high.
Review Source:Someone has major negotiating mojo.... Au Bon Pain seems to have a contract with many of the major hospitals in Chicago- U of C, Rush, as well as others. Â It could be worse- but it also could be better!
On my latest visit here, we attempted to treat ourselves to breakfast. Â We thought it would be quick. Â Oh, the disappointments that an optimist sets themselves up for! Â Um- we were way wrong. Â Coffee- that was quick, the breakfast sandwich- that should have taken about 5 minutes took approximately 15 minutes- and they had no ingredients left- at 9 am.
My modified (by necessity) egg, bacon and cheese on a croissant sandwich tasted good going down. Â Unfortunately- I lost it about 5 minutes later. Â THANKFULLY- ABP has a ladies bathroom that is very close by. Â Don't know if it was nerves due to the lovely procedure that I was about to have (think audition, when they guy gets needles under his eye- slightly different- but close) or the egg, but it did not sit well. Â
The fantastic friend who drove me seemed to enjoy their sandwich and was also thankful for the proximity of the bathroom. Â At least she was not too put off, we have traveled together for years- and gotten ill many times (got to love colleagues that become friends).
She drank her coffee- I pitched mine. Â
All in all- I wish I could say I will not be back. Â However, seeing as this is one of the only choices here, I cannot. Â Hopefully next time I at least will keep it down for more than 5 minutes!
Au bon Pain, how do I hate thee, let me count the ways:  1.  You were the only choice outside vending machines for the entire freaking hospital 2.  Your food costs twice as much as its really worth 3.  Your faux-cheery atmosphere makes me want to vomit in your blended veggie stew 4.  Your cheesy as hell manager is one of the most annoying people on the planet  5.  I cut my lip on your rock hard sandwich bread and bled during a presentation 6.  Your food mockingly looks healthy but look at the calorie count: wow 7.  What kind of devilish deal did you cut with the CEO of Rush to be the only source of food overnight?  8. Minimal food choices at night  9.  Slowest sandwich bar in history.  Nuff said.
