Food is decent, I really enjoy their onion rings, chicken quesadilla and wings.
Drinks are good.
Last time I was there I asked to have my food boxed to go I ended up not getting any of the salsa or guacamole that came with my meal when I specifically asked for it.
Wait staff is usually slow, takes forever to get a check here and even longer for cc's to get processed.
They have a nice outside which is why I come here.
I just came home from having dinner with my son here. I have lived in this neighborhood and have come here for years. Today my experience was unpleasant so I decided to write a review in hopes that they read this and improve. The waitress tonight was horrible. She was pleasant enough but my son asked if there was a wing special and as SOON as he asked that her attitude toward us changed. She told us that there was but we would have to change tables. No big deal, we decided not to change tables and I ordered regular wings (full price) and he ordered a burger. The food was good but the service was horrible. She never came back to check on us, didn't ask my son if he wanted a drink the first time around and after waiting for about 10 minutes after eating I finally asked the hostess to ask for our check. The waitress brought it and never came back to collect. There was only one other party of 4 in the side of the restaurant we were in. Really? Don't you want your money? Â
I used to wait tables, you don't make people wait like that, Â Not if you want them to come back.
Are you reading the reviews posted? Do you care? They are so uneven but I guess if you are pulling in enough money you could care less.
I really wish this place was better. It has the potential to be a great neighborhood bar (the only one of its type in the neighborhood in fact) but the food here is just terrible. Everytime we've come here the food has been so poorly prepared and you can tell it's not fresh and just generic bar food. Dont get me wrong I like bar good, but it has to be delicious and well prepared. Â Maybe you guys can get a new chef?
Plus it's overpriced for the neighborhood and the beers, while a good selection, can stand to be cheaper (How about $4-5 pints?)
Also, you guys can do craft beer nights, which would be great! Featuring new breweries that can come and discuss their beers. Â
Given the location, back patio, and overall neighborhood, I think this place could be such a great spot. It just needs some improvement on the food side.
I'm writing this review in the hope that someone from Austin's reads it.
I am a local to the area. I love the beer and the patio.
Also, the waitresses (and kitchen staff) there are really top notch.
However, the food consistently sucks. It has been this way for a bit. No spices and prepared in an industrial way that would seem to indicate that no one cares about the final product.
I've had veal parmigiana before, and in this last visit, I've just had chicken wings.
I know you just heat them up from a microwave. These taste like it. It was $13.95 for a very large portion. It didn't work for me and I only ate half.
Maybe you should aim higher. I would eat there more often if I liked the food. This would include making sure that food was served hot, salads were served cold and some spices were available.
It's getting hard to find options in the neighborhood that don't target the Jewish community. Maybe we Kew Garden people don't deserve nice things, as they say. Maybe I'm expecting too much from this place.
The Austin Ale house is a nice local bar and restaurant In Kew Gardens. It's in an old fashioned Tudor home, very cool looking. They offer tasty specials, I like to go for the prime rib. They also make a mean burger. And their wings are made to perfection. The Ale House also has a great night time bar scene. All in all, The Austin Ale House is a winner.
Review Source:OKAY FOOD, SLOW SERVICE, NICE WAITRESS
Yesterday, I took two good friends here for some casual American lunch (since they are going back to China for the summer) and we weren't disappointed by their burgers.
Austin Ale House has been around Kew Gardens since the early 1990s, and they are known for their steaks and burgers. Also, they have a tap room with a full of selection of drinks! Yay!
So, the three of us ordered an Austin's Burger (the classic), a Bull Burger, and a Cajun Chicken Sandwich. The burgers were done medium well, which I kind of regretted because it tasted a bit overdone. Although, it was still easy to chew and swallow!
Everything came as a combo (with a pickle, coleslaw, and a choice of fries or onion rings). The most interesting one was the Bull Burger, since it actually has a fried egg on top of the meat (plus slices of bacon!). Yum (or high calories?).
We went there yesterday (a Sunday) at around 12:30 pm, and the place wasn't that packed. Most of the people go for their brunch on the weekend, which I'll probably try next time!
The only downside was that it took a while for the food to come (even when wasn't that busy), and we also waited a long time to get our bill. Aside from that, the waitress was friendly and the place was pretty cozy (even a bit tight if you get a booth seat in the back, which we didn't).
I would come back again (but not a regular basis).
We waited 45+ minutes between the salad and the main course. Their service has never been stellar, but this was ridiculous. it may have been the kitchen, as I overheard customers asking their waiter how long it was going to be. At least our waiter was apologetic - that other one just shrugged his shoulders! And, thankfully, our 4yo was relatively well behaved (for her age), but I wouldn't have blamed her for complaining/whining about being hungry. They did give us free cupcakes for dessert to compensate, but we still got home much later than we wanted. I really want to like this neighborhood joint, but with service like that they make it difficult!
Review Source:Worst experience I have ever had at a steakhouse in my life. Our group of 8 diners came to this restaurant expecting a good time and a good meal. Boy were we beyond wrong. Allow me to count the ways I hate this restaurant.
1) It took us over 1 hour and a half to get our main courses. NEVER in my life had I ever had to wait this long at a decently nice restaurant. Even when it came, one of the steaks was given to ANOTHER table.
2) After the long wait and the infrequent assurances that our food was coming. The steaks were cold.. Stone cold. I swear I could get a better steak at my local TGIF. I'm paying 2x more for my steak, I'd expect something better. The fries were cold and the onion rings were a sad fried lifesaver with no hint that an onion actually existed within. Oh did I mention they ran out of potatoes?! What steakhouse takes your order for mashed and baked potatoes and tells you an hour later that they ran out.
3) Our waitress was never even there to refill our drinks. Our cold beer was as warm as urine by the time any food came. My friend waited a full hour for them to even refill her hot water.
Admittedly we got a lot of comp, but even that didn't come voluntarily. We had to ask for our waitress (whom had been avoiding our party the entire night) to do her job and provide service!
Overall, terrible terrible experience. I would not wish this on my enemies. I'd rather have paid full price for a decent dinner, rather than half price and our entire night ruined.
I have been visiting this place since I moved into the neighborhood in 2007. The place has gone from good to worse. On all of my last 3 occasions, the food has been disappointing. The worst was few weeks go, when me and my friends decided to have dinner there. BIGGEST MISTAKE! The hummus was pungent tasting chickpea paste. It was definitely stale. Fried pita tasted stale as well. The Tabouli and Melitzanosalata tasted the same. There was absolutely no difference between the two including the fact that they were too sour. Never going back.
Review Source:Found this little gem on Yelp. Â After reviewing the feedback and pictures we decided to celebrate a friends birthday here. Â The best thing about this place is the separation of the bar and dining room. Â The food was great and their portions were huge. Â I recommend the chipotle chicken wings. Â The steak was a bit more well done than I liked but it was still good. Â We will be back again. Â Thanks for having us.
Review Source:I went last night with my wife on a date night without the kids...
The plan was to go see a movie at Kew Gardens Cinemas, so I googled local restaurants for dinner, and this popped up as an option.
Upon review of the online menu, I saw there was an 'early-bird special' menu for weekdays between 4PM-6PM, and as it was 5:30PM, we were ready to eat, and live relatively close by, we decided to give it a try.
It is literally across the street from the movie theatre, so it's the perfect location for a dinner and a movie, if you like independent films, which is what the Kew Gardens Cinema specializes in.
We had to ask the waiter for the early bird menu, as they did not give us the option when we were seated, which was very close to the 6PM cutoff.. Â This seems understandable, and a smart business practice, so I had no real problem with that.
You should take note though, if you plan to dine before 6PM, as you may need to specifically ask for this menu. If I had not googled ahead, I would have had no idea it existed.
Anyway, I was surprised at both the generous portions, and the quality of the food. I was a bit wary since I read a lot of mixed reviews on this place, but the early bird deal sounded too good not to try out. I kind of assumed they would skimp out on the portions for the early bird, but this turned out to not be the case..
The start was a salad, a good mix that was solid and fairly standard, then a choice of an appetizer. We both chose grilled zucchini with fresh mozzarella and sweet peppers, which luckily was tasty and nicely presented.
For the main course I had the grilled salmon, which was very soft and juicy inside while having a nice mild crust outside. I found it perfectly cooked and delicious. I had it with a baked potato and vegetables. My wife opted for the steak chimich, which was also very tender and delicious along with two vegetables choices.
The portions were quite generous, so after this we had no room for dessert, and we took the dessert to go... Yes, dessert is included in the special, also! I got the apple pie, while my wife had cheesecake. We each took a tiny bite, but were too full to have any more, so we'll enjoy those tonight.
Anyway, the amazing thing is that all the above was under $20/person... Salad, appetizer, main course, dessert... We will definitely be back for this special. It's worth it it to eat a little early for that kind of deal.
I'm still wondering whether we just got lucky, since I'd definitely consider our food well above average. It was by no means 5 star gourmet, but a solid quality meal nonetheless.
I would not rate a restaurant well just because of a good deal being offered. Bad food is bad food, but this was definitely NOT bad food.
If anything changes on my next visit, I will update.
This place is great for St. Pattys and to people watch the townspeople get shitfaced and sing out loud to old 90s songs. It middles between quiant country home and trashy overgrown alcoholics. The decor is fine, I feel like Im riding a train with a Bordello theme with the fireplace and dark wallpaper. The outside pattio is fabulous. The bleu cheese buffalo wings, mamosa and burgers are quite the charmer. Just a little overpriced. Good for when youre too lazy to host your own party.
-3.8/5 stars-Outside pattio near sunset and LIRR is the best. I feel like Im in Jersey.
Had a http://resturant.com voucher and decided to have dinner here. There were a lot of people in the restaurant section giving the impression of a popular spot. Food was ok, i was very disappointed in my fish and chips, that fish had no flavor, you could taste the flour it was blah I threw it away. My calamari which was the special for the day in a sweet and sour sauce was great, I definitely enjoyed that. The portions are very generous. I may venture back for other menu choices because I still got the impression the place was good.
Review Source:This place is good for the fairly decent beer selection.
However, if you are looking to sit down and eat here, you might want to reconsider.
We ordered a simple meal of chicken fingers and fries. Very typical pub fare. We ended up getting super greasy, slighty undercooked, rather bland chicken fingers. The fries were greasy as well, but at least we didn't have to worry about getting food poisoning from those.
I have to say, I was really underwhelmed by the menu, the service, and the food that was served. The dirty TV sets at each table certainly doesn't give patrons a sense that the place is clean and well-maintained.
Sorry, but I might be back for the beer, but I'll definitely skip on the food.
It has been awhile since I have been here, but I would love to make Austin's my go-to spot for a fun time when I am not trying to venture to the city. Â I came here for brunch and helped myself to their unlimited mimosa brunch.
The drinks? They could have been slightly stronger, given the fact that they served them in diner style soda glasses or pints at a bar. Â I was surprised to not see a champagne type glass. Â But I don't care what type of glass I get, I just want a strong drink. Â I was feelin good when I walked out, but Austin's could step it up slightly. Â
The food? Well they do serve a cup of fresh fruit per person in the beginning as well as a basket of some bagels/muffins. Â The bagels were cut in quarters and I am 95% sure they came from Baker's Dozen across the street. Â Supporting the local businesses and selecting from a great place def earns Austin's major points here. Â I ordered the steak and eggs and the my entree came out within 15 minutes. Â The steak was cooked to order perfectly and the eggs were too. Â There was so much food with the potatoes included that I could not finish it all.
The server was very attentive and kept our drinks filled within minutes of them being empty. Â
I was impressed with Austin's overall for brunch and see myself being here again in the future.
Ok.... After 6 months strike ... We decided to go back w some friends....
Friends that the owner knows personally .... N he also knows us (because we used to go there all the time)
Ok my friend ordered a steak medium rare .... Her steak (as usuall) was over cooked.... I ordered medium well n mine was well done. My husband n I r used to it, so we didn't make a big deal.... But she does like her meat her way, so she brought it the waiter's attention, he told the manager, the manager took her plate moved it to the kitchen area and brought it back saying "it is good" here so his face was all over her food w a flash light telling her that she wasn't seing right for the "lack of light".
U know.... Even if she were wrong.... ThAt was handled very poorly.... Specially w returning customers (we live across the street!!! Hello!!!!). But what got me mad was his face n flash light over her food.... N then telling her she is going "have to accept it" ....
Yeah.... A steak house that doesn't know the difference between medium rare and medium well (always). But a rude manager???
C'mon..... Our bill was $200 is not cheap food....
This place is GREAT for hangin out and kickin back!
Been comin here for years....All the bartenders are great. They really take care of you and make you feel as if you are at home. The place gets crowded during the happy hour so be ready! Often they will have some hot munchies off to the side to enjoy with your happy hour brews. They have a great selection of beers on tap and by the bottle.
Now the FOOD. It is really good. This is actually my go-to restaurant in the neighborhood if I have friends in from out of town or just want a good sitdown meal. It is a nice diningroom to sit and have a relaxing time. Â They also have a great earlybird special. All the food I have had there was GREAT. They also usually have some special things on the menu that you won't find just anywhere. They have a prime rib night too! If you want to go for lunch, they have a great burger!
The beers are the only reason to go to Austin's Steak & Ale House. Â The food is not memorable; as a matter of fact, it is not recommend. Â
Avoid anything that you would associate as savory, fancy, or healthy. Â It will most likely come out oily from too much oil or too much butter. Â I ate in there enough times.
My recommendation is to stick with the bar grub. Â My default food are the chicken wings, burgers, and sometimes the quesadilla (the salsa and guacamole are not always fresh).
They barely got two stars. Â I must have went on an off day....
Drinks were horrible don't waste your money. Â Food was substandard and they need to adjust the prices to match the quality of food. Â If they changed cooks recently I'd understand cause that is not chef quality food. Â Lets get them some help people from waitstaff to cooks they need som quality re-training.
I was disgusted by the service and the bartender's rudeness at Austin Ale House.
I am from Kew Gardens and this is a convenient local bar for me. I used to frequent their Ladies Night pretty regularly. How could I turn down free drinks and karaoke? Then, I experienced the most appalling customer service of my life.
After many months of loyal service and very generous tips, the bartender, I believe his name is Chris, acted like the biggest douche I have ever encountered. After he disrespected my friend, he specifically told me that I was never welcome back in the bar. Even though I had tipped him well throughout my many months visiting this bar. When I brought up his behavior to his partner, Meghan, it was dismissed and I was told that he "was just in a bad mood." Yeah fucking right.
I find these bartenders to be unprofessional, rude, and overwhelmingly disrespectful. I will never return to this horrible bar even though I live three blocks away. I can't believe they maintain a loyal customer base when their service is so subpar.
I would even rather go to Cobblestones (where I was accosted by a drunk man).
I came here for dinner last week with the intention to spend the $75 gift certificate my husband won 6 months ago. It's always a different mindset when in a "money to blow" dinner situation, so we decided to try a bunch of stuff to get a feel for the place. I am always a fan when the bar and restaurant are seperate enough but still "attached".
The clam chowder wasnt' the finest, but the sambuca shrimp was surprisingly delicious. Luckily for me they have Doc's cider so I had a beer alternative to turn to. Â I had the aged sirlion, and while cooked a little more medium/well than my usual liking, it was a damn good steak.
With 1 appetizer, 1 soup, 2 steaks, and 4 drinks the bill came to just around $100. I would typically say "for bar food that is a little pricey", but I cant hate. My steak was damn good. I wish it was closer to Astoria. I am interested in going back for some wings and football.
Went here with a http://restaurant.com coupon and I'm glad I did since I would have been upset paying full price for the meal I had. We started with the Honey Chipotle wings. They were crunchy but literally dipped in some honey syrup with pepper flakes. It was weird and not very appetizing. I had the Black Label burger which was not great at all. The bottom brioche bun was practically none existent due to how soggy it was and then the top was not fresh tasting. The meat lacked flavor. The truffle fries were the only highlight of this dish but extremely greasy.
Service was really, really slow especially considering how slow it was. They pick an choose who they give extra attention (and bread baskets). Decor is dated and the pictures on the walls have plastic over them.
I wish this was a better experience since it is so nearby and had pretty decent reviews but it just did not d it for me.
My mom and I go to Austin's pretty regularly - usually for lunch or an early dinner during the week. Last night was my first time going on a busy Friday night.
I have to say I really enjoyed the lively atmosphere and I'm happy to say that despite being busy the service and food were great as always.
I must note that I have some dietary restrictions and my server was happy to make substitutions that I asked for. I ordered the seared salmon with veggies instead of fettucine and without the mustard sauce. The salmon was great and I took half of it home with me. I gave the baked potato to my mom. I would have liked to have a baked sweet potato instead.
I also want to add that I really like the frequent diner card - 5 dinners get you the next one free. It's really a nice way to reward loyal customers.
Came here for brunch w/my friend, what an amazing place! Feels like summer time outside fun when you ask to dine outside :-). Brunch comes with 2 drinks - 1 alcoholic and a cup of coffee. breads and muffins for the table, main entree and fruits. Loved it! Will definitely go back for more summer time outside fun! :-)
Forest Hills LIRR station right next door.
I came here on a Monday night after a long hiatus and forgot how good the food can be. Â Maybe it depends on what you order but I guess I'm lucky because the food has been pretty reliable. Â
Seriously, no place makes chicken tenders like Austin's Ale House. Tender crispy, fried chicken with a kick of spice, served with honey vinegrette sauce, it's bar food made perfect! Â $9.95 gets you 4 large tenders.
The crab cakes are also a great deal and delicious snack. Â For $12.95, you get 2 large cakes containing seafood and vegetables along with the nice chipotle aioli sauce. Â
My other must eats are the famous burgers, onion rings and brownie (see my original review). Â Skip the calamari and fries, especially truffle fries.
I've always had a really good time at Austin's, whether I stop for a drink with friends or sit down and have a meal. The atmosphere is very welcome, and if you can get over some overtly drunk 20 and 30 year olds from time to time, you'll definitely have a good time, too.
Austin's is separated into a bar and dining area, so of you're going on a Friday or Saturday night and want some peace and quiet, make sure you head to the dining room. The bar scene has a very laid back tavern-y feel, and the bartenders have always been really nice and gracious toward the service they get. I even got a complimentary drink because the staff "had left me waiting for a long time" at the bar. Also, make sure you check into Foursquare for a free cocktail special!
The food is the other facet that makes this a great place. I think the menu is very reasonably priced - it's not McDonald's or Five Guys, so don't expect those kinds of prices. The serve typical bar food but also tasty entrees, and have free corn beef and hash on St. Patty's day. t
Tip: If you sit in the bar area, make sure you approach and waiter or bartender for a menu - they'll just assume you're there for drinks.
Austin's is really reflective of Kew Gardens itself - a low key atmosphere that doesn't throw "New York City" in your face.
I have been to Austin's Ale House for dinner two times and I liked everything I tried. Â
Clams Casino
Raw clams - really sweet, so good
Coronary Burger
Buffalo Wings
Fried Mozzarella
Skirt Steak
Multiple televisions in the dining room that had the Yankees, NY Rangers, and the Knicks on all at the same time.
They have specials every day of the week.
