I'd been meaning to get to Avenue N for a while. Â Then one recent Sunday night -- by BFF and I went. Â I will say that it was not what we were expecting -- that being said -- it was fantastic! Â
Small, intimate space with the bar area spilling into the dining area with tables. Â High ceilings with a partially open kitchen. Â It was cozy. (I hear there's a patio out back in warmer weather -- it was early May when I was there and the weather hadn't warmed up yet). Â
We sat at the bar.  There were hooks for your purse -- thank you for attention to the little details  The menu is just the right length that you will surely find something to suit your fancy, but not so long that making a decision feels near impossible.  I had the roasted beet salad (with blue cheese and candied nuts) and crab-stuffed squash blossoms (one of the night's specials).  The combination made for just the dinner I wanted.  My friend had the roasted corn soup and the ceasar salad.  She is still talking about how good it was. Â
We agreed as we left that we look forward to going back again.
Great kitchen, great staff in the dining room. Emily and Katie know the food and drinks well.
I'm updating my original review based on subsequent visits.
Ave N has the blessing and curse of a regular customer base. The good is that they'll stay in business, the bad is 1) You can't pop in spontaneously because they're full. and 2) The regulars develop favorites on the menu and never want them to go away. Consequently, the menu gets a little stagnant.
- Every restaurant has their six million dollar burger, but this one is crazy good. Ordered bloody rare.
- The TVs. There you are enjoying a dish of exquisite scallops and you look up and there's a f*****ng hockey game on not one, but TWO TVs. What's next Keno and karaoke night?
- The temperature is a little wild. There are spots in the room where you'll keep your hat and coat on, and other tables where you want a bucket of ice for your head.
- The water the use is Rhode Island tap. Sure it's not as rank as some cities, but they need a heavy-duty filter. Most locals probably don't notice it. Â A minor thing, but it tastes like old cast iron pipes.
- The music usually just adds noise to the room. Once and awhile it adds a little something nice, but mostly just raises the decibel level.
Like I said, almost perfect.
TIP: It's popular and crowded. Call ahead unless you like eating at 9pm.
I'm not a huge fan of breakfast in general, but it was mother's day, and you do what mommy wants to do. Â She had seen this place on the Phantom Gourmet, and decided that she wanted to give it a try. Â First, the place is much smaller than we expected. Â That's not necessarily a drawback, as it was well furnished and quite cute, but it didn't help the noise levels any of course. Â We were all pleased with our food, but my home fries were lukewarm, so that was a drawback. Â They were still tasty though! Â I got the home fries mentioned above, and the lemon ricotta donuts. Â Note to a first time diner here: Â The lemon ricotta donuts were good, but not what you would expect. Â I thought they would have a lemon ricotta filling, but no. Â They are literally a lemon ricotta dough, so they only have a hint of lemon taste, and of course ricotta is a very mild tasting cheese, so you hardly taste that at all. Â My mother and brother liked their food very much, although my mother's French toast was very rich, which you might expect when white chocolate and raspberries are involved. Â My bloody mary was perfectly seasoned, I didn't have to ask for it spicy, but came with odd garnishings of a lemon, lime, and olive, but no celery. Â Go figure. Â I would definitely like to try this place for dinner, as that is more up my alley. Â If you are using a GPS to get here, our GPS told us that the restaurant was on the opposite side of the street, and also the entrance is really not on Newman at all, but on the side street off of Newman, so keep that in mind.
Review Source:Ugh. I honestly don't like to make negative reviews but Avenue N didn't reach my expectations.
I ordered the corn dog and Mac n cheese appetizer. Â That was pretty yummy. (anything deep fried tastes good, I find). The sauce accompanying the dogs had a nice sweet, tangy bite to it. Â The Mac n cheese smelled fresh with wholesome milk and stringy cheese. Â I feel this dish is difficult to screw up, though.
As for my meal, I ordered the well-known braised beef dish (full name escapes me at moment).  It was... alright.  I've had  better.  The flavor of the beef was lost to me.  Does that mean local RI cows don't  taste as good, or is this a result of the chef?  Also, mashed potatoes were too salty.
I also tried the ever popular ravioli with mushrooms. This was pretty good with the ravioli having a nice al dente texture. But, it was ok... Not spectacular. Â I've had better on the Hill.
What really brings down the review is that they didn't give us napkins or water. The host didn't greet us at all. Â Very odd. But he will greet others that he knows.
I am one that will pay for good food, but the taste was mediocre coupled by negligent service. Â I feel the only thing they've got going for them is fresh ingredients, which is a concept that I like. Â I would have given three stars but customer service was out of place.
Oh, and I almost forgot to add that the price is too high for such poor service and mediocre food.
This place is great. Went for Easter brunch - started things off with deviled eggs and thoroughly enjoyed. For my entree, had coffee crusted sirloin with poached eggs and it was tremendous. Fresh and cooked perfectly. For dessert, the creme brulee was top notch and I was fortunate enough to also try the brownie sundae, which was splendid.
If you go make reservations - only a few tables with a small bar. I've been here 3 times so far and have no complaints.
Went back for brunch and had a burger. It was OK. I enjoyed the bread, although it was too large to eat so I had to cut the burger in half and eat one bread side at a time. The meat had no real flavor and I had to ask for ketchup. I was totally wishing I had ordered french toast or something more traditional (not lunch). Coffee was not favorable and the tea we ordered was a Lipton black tea. I would have preferred something a little better. No fresh fruit juice available. We ordered fresh fruit before our main course and the berries were flavorless. Overall, I would rather go here for dinner.
Review Source:I've driven by Avenue N a hundred times but never really gave it a second thought. After reading review on Yelp i decided to give it a try. It was valentines so i wanted to try something new and different. Immediately i thought of going to Avenue N. I went online to their website and made a reservation.
When we got there I was greeted by the hostess/owner Tracy and she ushered us to our seats. Looking at the decor it had a lot of character. It's a small place maybe seating 30 people plus 10 more at the bar. Some people complained about the TV's being obnoxious. There a 2 small 32" TV's at the bar. They weren't distracting at all. Being that most(if not all) the ingredients are fresh and local, the menu is small. That's ok as long as it good!
For an appetizer i ordered Mac n Chz. I love Mac n Chz so it's hard to resist ordering it when i saw it on the menu. The cheese sauce was like a cheesy Alfredo sauce and it also had a cheese crunch topping. I liked it a lot. Â I'm a picky eater and beef fan so i ordered cheeseburger and fries. The hamburg is fresh grass-fed beef and the fries are hand cut from a actual real potato(which is unheard of in most restaurants) They gave me a huge mound of fries on my plate, more than enough to share. The burger was tender and tasty and the fries was hot and salted perfect with kosher or sea salt.
My wife ordered a salad and a Margarita Pizza. The salad was a decent size but not big enough for a meal. The Margarita Pizza was huge and it was cooked on the grill! It can easily would feed 2 people. My wife loved it and they didn't skimp on the  toppings either. My wife ate about 1/4 of the pizza and took the rest to go. She had it for leftovers and got 2 more meals out of it!
When we were leaving Nick the owner/Chef was saying goodbye to us from grill area. I complimented him on the good food and let him know it was our first time there. He was all smiles and he was thankful that we came there eat. I let him know that we tried Avenue N because of Yelp and he acknowledged that he gets a lot of Yelpers in the restaurant. I could tell he was genuine and that he really cared that his customers were leaving his restaurant happy.
So with tip it was just under $50.
Cheap? No.
Quality? Yes!
Like with anything else, you get what you pay for! Would i come back to Avenue N? Absolutely! A+
We have been to dinner twice; first time was very good, enjoyed the ambiance and the cuisine very much. We went for the second time for a birthday celebration of a family member and clearly stated to the server our occasion. On our second visit the burger was overcooked, the pizza we ordered listed chantrelles mushrooms on the menu but was overcrowded by button mushrooms. Short ribs were dry, dessert was donuts with a weak candle stuck in the center of it and the dessert was on our tab. This is the hospitality industry - thought we'd be treated a bit better for Mom's birthday celebration. For a chef of his caliber, I had high expectations for both food and service. Corn dog and mac & cheese are a great American dish that we enjoyed and the ruben sliders are great too. Martini's are rather expensive, cost us $25 for two drinks at the bar our first visit. It's apparent the chef enjoys staring out into his dining room more so than his kitchen.
Review Source:A+ for attitude and a damn good meal. While we were there we were personally greeted by both owners. It's the kind of place where they chef will ask you how your food is and the hostess will help you put on your jacket.
And the food - wow. The margarita pizza was fantastic, perfect from the sauce to the cheese to the crust. And the cauliflower turnip bisque with truffle oil was off the charts. Brought me back to my days in Seattle tasting truffle oils and that was a glorious flashback.
Make reservations or come after 8:30 otherwise you'll hit a well-deserved wait (that will be worth it).
Loved everything about Avenue N and we'll be back again soon.
They've got a small yet creative and seasonal (items change every 8-12 weeks) menu using ingredients that are locally grown and sold. The place isn't all that large so making a reservation ahead of time is a good idea.
Our server suggested I try the cauliflower and turnip bisque, and I have to admit I was a little apprehensive about turnips being listed as one of the main ingredients but it was excellent. Its consistency was rich without an overwhelming saltiness that I've found many bisques to have. My boyfriend ordered the pork belly appetizer and it was delicious. One bite of it reminded me of the pork I often bought with my family from NYC's Chinatown. My entree was an order of the sweet potato and ricotta ravioli which was both sour and sweet incorporating goat cheese to balance out the sweet potatoes. It was definitely a combination of tastes I never expected to find in a ravioli dish, but yummy all the same.
I can't wait to return next season to try more creative dishes!
What a nice surprise. Went here for a birthday dinner and the six of us all enjoyed our experience. From the reasonably-priced (and delicious) mixed drinks to the reuben sliders to the lobster dumplings to the scallops and risotto to the grand finale of cheesecake, it was a great meal all around. It's not a big restaurant so make sure you make reservations on the weekend, and they also have some outdoor seating which I'm sure is nice in warmer weather.
What's keeping this from five stars is that (1) I was a little surprised they didn't serve any bread, esp. seeing as Seven Stars Bakery is right next door, (2) my scallops were nicely seared on the top but the bottom of them weren't seared at all (Gordon Ramsay is a stickler for searing scallops on both sides), and (3) the ricotta donuts dessert had a tasty exterior but a very blah interior. While I would more than likely have the cheesecake again, those that had the donuts weren't very enthused by them and I have to agree.
I'm just a little perturbed I didn't try the short ribs; I ordered the scallops as I thought I would be able to grab some steak from my family members, but everyone devoured their meals which shows how delicious the food was. Oh well, I'll be back and next time I'm going for the short ribs!
Avenue N is a great spot. The food is fresh. The chef only uses local ingredients. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is fun. Must try the Reuben sliders, Mac and cheese, and lemon ricotta donuts. They're cocktails are great and created by their on staff mixologists, my favorite is the white out.
Review Source:What are the odds that I can find a small cozy place for me and the wife and have corn dogs and mac & cheese on the appetizer menu for my 9 year old daughter !!
One way to describe this restaurant HEAVEN... Â before I go on, remember that old adage "you get what you pay for", well it's alive & true. Â Avenue N is not cheap, but it's one of those places where you feel that the money was well spent.
So, my wife and I have a couple drinks, house drinks by a true mixologist.. Impressive and both were outstanding !! Â I had the White Out: house infused cranberry vodka, orange, lemon syrup, allagash white. And the wife had the John Daly: absoult wild tea vodka, agave nectar, fresh squeezed lemonade, black tea.
Onto the FOOD !! Â My daughter had the aforementioned hand battered corn dogs with mac & cheese. Â She absolutely LOVED it, and the chipotle ketchup that came with it delicious.. Â Wife and I had the steamed Lobster dumplings, mouth watering little clouds of perfection..
Entrees: Wife had the pan seared scallops, best she ever had and I had to agree..
I had the avenue N burger, I know what your thinking a burger really.. Yes a burger and holy crap Batman, it was the BEST burger I have ever had..
Avenue N: Great Drinks, delicious food, Great service. Â A little pricey but worth Every penny !!!
Highly recommended... Make sure to make reservations !!!
I have been to Avenue N a few times and my experience continues to get better and better.
I have been for brunch and dinner and the food is truly full of flavor, fresh and often local. Â For brunch I've enjoyed both the spinach and mushroom omlets that come with a super crunchy, thin cut toasted italian slice brushed with a smidge of oil.
For dinner I've enjoyed the roasted chicken - it's not like any old roasted chicken - REALLY delicious, fresh and full of flavor.
They also have a wonderful cocktail list.
We snagged the last available reservation for Mother's Day brunch, and the experience started right there: a call to say the time I requested online via their website was unavailable, but they did have an opening a little later. Â Such accommodating and nice service. Â When there is something an establishment can't do, it is the mark of great service when they counter with what they CAN.
Between the four of us we had a sampling of apps and main dishes. Â I had the turnip (or was it parsnip?) soup to start, which was absolutely divine. Â I am not a huge fan of root vegetables, but this was smooth and rich without being overly creamy. Â I had the poached eggs, others had the wild mushroom omelet, eggs 'my' way, and spinach salad. Â No one complained. Â The only issue with the food was that we had to order a side of homefries with the eggs 'my' way - we assumed it was part of the dish, although the menu was in no way misleading.
I appreciated the cocktail offering of a Pim's cup - something rarely encountered and one of my favorite Spring/Summer day-cocktails! Â The service was prompt and efficient- but advice to our waitress: do not refer to your female patrons as "doll". Â This is not a 20s musical. Â Thank you.
Looking forward to returning to this rehabilitated industrial complex for dinner soon!
Ya, so... came in for dinner. Â Had high expectations, and they were all met.
Waitress was a doll, very nice and cordial.
Had the duck sausage again, was delicious again. Â I'll say tho, I still feel it has Fall written all over it, but, I could care less the time of year, its a great dish and a perfect app for 2, just enough to get your appetite going.
I also tried a few bites of the turnip soup. Â This was absolutely incredible. Â Very silky, awesome texture, and believe it or not, if was borderline refreshing. Â Sounds like a heavy soup, but it definitely isn't. Â Light and delicate in flavor, not very sweet... mmm delish!
I ordered the short ribs. Â And for the rest of my life, I will order the short ribs. Â Tender is an understatement. Â Divine is an insult. Â Tasty would be a laughable description. Â This dish was HEAVEN. Â You know some people how they say you can "cut it with a fork" but in the back of your mind, you are saying "this dipshit doesn't know a goddamn thing about food, idiot"... believe me when i tell you, my knife stayed on the table. Â There isn't a word to desribe it. Â The green beans were cooked perfect to al dente, however the horseradish potatoes could have used a bit more horseradish... i barely tasted it.
Also had some of the sirloin... delicious, but... in all honesty i wasn't really thinking about it after how incredible the short ribs were.. and i'm usually a NY strip/filet/ribeye kind of guy. Â So I can't really say much about it, lol... but it was good.
Had a couple bites of the mushroom ravioli.. also incredible. Â The truffle flavor in this dish was just enough to get your attention, then the rest of the bite mellowed out into a clean, earthy, bitter, and somewhat sweet light aftertaste of the figs. Â Such a fan! Â Well done.
Ended with the churros.... (sp?) Â Light, flaky, great texture, awesome little chocolate dipping sauce. Â Perfect to finish off with my very reasonably priced bottle of Rodney Strong Merlot 2008.
Coming back, very, very soon.
Yum Yum Yum! Avenue N is fresh, tasty, and friendly!
Walk into this East Providence establishment, and you're instantly welcomed by a friendly hostess - who is actually the owner! Â
We tried the oatmeal stout on tap, and found it to be absolutely delicious. Â If you'd like a fun cocktail - try the bourbon hayride. Â It was a sweet and tasty concoction!
Avenue N is an intimate setting, but not intrusive. Â About 14 people can sit and eat at the bar, and there are approximately 11 other tables. I think it's an ideal place for a first date- because it's small and loud, but not impersonal.
The light bulbs are super cool - I took a picture here on yelp - and the entire restaurant has a good amalgam of modern and vintage decor and service. There is exposed brick and beams, big windows, outdoor seating, and a marble bar.
They offer a decent mix of specialty beers, fine wines, and a variety of spirits. Â The exterior and surrounding neighborhood don't do the interior justice, but I like it because it keeps this gem slightly hidden. Â Plenty of parking, and areas to sit outside. Â Overall, I'm quite pleased with Avenue N - and can't wait to go again for some fresh local eats!
Been to Avenue N a few times now and the food is consistently good. It's a very eclectic menu and you never know what you're going to get, but it's always prepared in a thoughtful way.
Don't go during traditionally busy times or you may end up waiting. Otherwise, very good food and service.
The restaurant snob in me (and on most of the exterior of me) says stay away during winter too as half the tables get a freezing cold blast every time the door opens. Also you are going to be sitting one or two feet from your fellow diners so if you are looking for that private, quiet table, you are not going to find it here.
I do recommend this place if you are looking for a cozy, sociable, and creative experience! the legendary Seven Stars is next door too and also worth the visit.
Try Avenue N for brunch - very good Benny!
We decided to give Avenue N another chance and were glad we did! Â We stopped by for brunch a few weeks ago and it was legit. Â We ordered the ricotta dough-nuts for an appetizer, I could have eaten a dozen myself, so tasty! Â We also ordered the coffee crusted sirloin with poached eggs and the spinach omelet. Â The sirloin was awesome, cooked to medium-rare perfectly, well seasoned, a great dish. Â The omelet was just alright, home fries were tasty though along with fries with truffle oil. Â The service was friendly and quick despite being a busy day. Â Highly recommend.
Review Source:I had my first visit yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised by this cozy little restaurant. Seasonal menu and in an airy mill building space that seems to be visited frequently by its loft mill neighbors. Everything my table had was delicious (the turnip soup, oyster appetizer and short rib braised in red wine were the standouts in my opinion). We had a long wait due to the small space and the place was packed, so reservations are definitely recommended. I need to visit more to make sure this place is consistently good as this first time before I rate it higher, but this place has a lot of potential and is off to a great start.
Review Source:Top notch food. Â Always good, interesting, fresh, and With an effort to use seasonal local ingredients. Â Pizzas are killer. Â As a neighbor wish it was a bit more affordable. Â The type of place you could go weekly, but its hard to get out of there spending less then $60-$70 for two. Â So it has been our once in a great while place. Â The burger although great is even $12. Â Agree with a past review in regards to under cooked burgers. Â Have had the burger twice, both times has been delivered as rare despite ordered as medium. Â Worth a try, certainly will be back.
Review Source:I really like Avenue N and I think it is a great addition to Rumford. The owners are great, and the wait staff is helpful. The restaurant itself is tiny and tends to always be crowded, so I would recommend reservations. I have had several items off the menu, as well as specials, and enjoyed them all. Their drinks are delicious. The brunch is fantastic - rabbit sausage and beignets are divine! Definitely worth checking out, and even with part of North Broadway closed, it's really just over the Henderson Bridge! I would not judge this restaurant by its review in RI Monthly, which seemed a bit harsh to me. Check it out for yourself and I doubt you'll be disappointed. It hasn't even been open a year, so I am willing to allow for some growing pains so long as the food is good.
Review Source:Loved the decor at this place: they managed maintain the historic qualities of the location -- which used to be Rumford Chemical Works -- while still coming across as polished and clean. Â Very interesting. Â
Our waitress was phenomenal -- friendly, funny, and helpful. Â My friend ordered the lemonade and raved about it! Â I tried a sip and I have to agree: it's probably the best lemonade I've been served at a restaurant. Â The menu selection is quite small -- and I have to cut them some slack for that, because I really think they make an attempt to be seasonal and local with their produce and they seem to make things fresh to order. Â The menu on their website is expanded, and does not reflect what they have available every time you visit, which I think is misleading.
I ordered the soup of the day: a sweet potato bisque, which was delicious. Â My friend ordered the Crisp Iceberg salad, which comes in an iceberg lettuce "bowl" essentially. Â She didn't care much for the dressing, but I enjoyed it. Â
I tend to order salads as entrees, but that was a mistake at this restaurant! Â The Heirloom Tomato Salad I ordered was $8 and TINY! Â It packed a big flavor punch but it was, like, a baby-sized portion. Â I was still hungry by the end of the meal. Â Meanwhile, my friend ordered the Avenue "N" Burger for $11 and it was HUGE and so, so delicious. Â Really, that burger was incredible.
Although they have 4 delicious-sounding desserts listed on their menu online, none of them were available when we went, which was so disappointing. Â They only had two desserts; we ordered the cheesecake. Â It was good in flavor, but it possibly needed more time to thaw out, it was ice cold and the texture was off.
I was excited to try this new restaurant opened by Nick Elkhay, former head chef for the Chow Fun Food Group. Â Every table was full on a recent Saturday night visit. Â
Paul, our waiter, was fun and helpful, offering recommendations on the drink menu such vodka selection, etc. Â I like their twists on the classics. Â The homemade celery bitters really enhanced the house dirty martini. Â Appetizers sounded delicious and they were! Â A rabbit sausage, a tasty tuna tartare and an adult corn dog accompanied by gouda mac and cheese. Â The entrees were good but a bit underseasoned. Â I ordered the short rib and missed the flavor of the stout and bbq in the accompanying sauce. Â The grits were bland to the point of tasteless. Â I should have taken Paul's advice on his recommendation of the pork loin entree but there's always next time. Â We didn't indulge in dessert that night but will certainly be back, even if just for apps and drinks. Â I have my eye on the reuben sliders and pancetta wrapped shrimp. Â
As a new restaurant, I know they are still fine tuning things but Avenue N is solid- a seasoned chef, a nice, casual setting with exposed brick interior and a cute patio for outdoor eating, a delicious selection of entrees. Price was reasonable too. Â Martinis from $7 to $9 and entrees in the $20 range.
What's not to love?
We sidled in on a week night thinking we would have no problem getting a table. Boy were we wrong. We ended up at the bar, which was no problem. I loved their expansive marble bar and the industrial feel of the entire place. They have plenty of delicious beers on tap and a menu packed with local farm-to-table delicacies.
This owner took a risk opening a restaurant in suburban Rumford but I applaud him on this. The result is a wonderful dining spot that serves tasty and thoughtful meals. I will definitely be back!
We started with the Corn Dogs with Mac and Cheese. The flavor was good but the mac was a little watery and needed the fork to chase it around the plate.
There was a hair in mine - not human but something short and synthetic like out of a sweater or maybe a pet. I'm not really grossed out by that sort of thing so I kept eating.
I ordered the Beef Short Rib which was flavorful and big. The grits were flavored by the sauce and I didn't pick up the green onion. Some jicama wasn't welcome.
We ordered the Cookies and Milk for dessert. I'd be shocked if the cookies were not microwaved straight out of a Sarah Lee package. A little stale and dry with overly hot chocolate chips (microwave?).
Our server was excellent and checked on us, kept our water full and was a very good representative of the menu.
For the price, I expected more. Homemade cookies, at least.
I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately, its still a work in progress. The staff, while enthusiastic, was a bit of a mess - and didn't bring water to the table despite about 4 visits by the waitress. The quality of the food, in general, is quite good, but value varies greatly. Their pizzas are huge and cheap, at $10 for a margherita and $13 for a mushroom, while ravioli was absurdly expensive at $18 for 4 average size squares. The heirloom tomato salad was decent. The decor is pretty cool, with nice attention to detail, although they need to figure out a better a/c situation for hot days. There are a few vegi dishes, but its mostly a meat/fish menu.
