Coming from Northern NJ/NY area, it takes awhile to "un-wind" and get used to the energy of the people of Chincoteague...With that being said, I've been vacationing on the island for years now and frequent Mr. Baldy's for either breakfast, lunch, or dinner...When you first walk in the décor to the left area is Beatle memorabilia...(Mr. Baldy is a big fan of The Beatles)...The rest of the restaurant's décor is pretty simple...paintings on the wall of under the sea (Including a line from "Yellow Submarine")...There are cute drawings from kids that come to Mr. Baldy's and are hung on the wall...Some are even framed...

As far as the service...Some days the service is quick and other days not so quick...Remember, we are on an island where the energy is calm!...No need to get crazy and rush!...But honestly, we have never sat and waited more than we are used to waiting in this crazy area of NJ/NY...The waitresses are always friendly!...Some more than others...There is a tiny little firecracker named, Billie, that has been working there for a million years....She is quick speaking and moves like she's on roller skates and gets the job done!!...We always look for her when we come to Mr. Baldy's!...We love her!

If you are ordering breakfast, you have to get the pancakes!!....Fluffy and thick with a hint of vanilla flavor!...Bacon is nice and crispy and never greasy!...Egg omelets are good, but not much of a choice as far as veggies go...Homefries are literally tiny cubed potatoes that have been either baked or quick fried...never greasy!!...My kids love them!!...Coffee is great!!

Lunch, I have always ordered my favorite Rueben sandwich...Very good!!..Crab cakes, turkey sandwiches, etc...all good...

    Dinner is just as good!...

Bottom line is Mr. Baldy's is a simple and friendly restaurant that you can always count on getting your basic food that tastes great!...If you're looking for basic comfort food, this is where to go...Nothing fancy, just good food!

    Remember to ask for Billie!!

We came here for a late breakfast.  Unfortunately we never got to try the food, as we decided to leave based solely upon the number of flies in the restaurant.  I understand that flies are going to be attracted to the restaurant, but there didn't seem to be any measures being taken to control them at all.  I usually frown upon reviewing a place without even trying it, but when you're literally run out by flying insects, I think a review is in order.  Hopefully this was just an "off" day as no one else has complained about the issue.

Quite a strange experience. Hostess didn't give us a great welcome, but our server was very friendly. The food was average, not that much choice on Chincoteague for breakfast though.

I agree with Christian this a great place for breakfast and it is the real deal (local and not touristy). Anyplace that serves good potatoes for breakfast and knows how to do eggs gets my vote. Typical dinner/cafe decor with hearty food, waitresses that are quick with more coffee and extra butter, etc. Save your money while on Chincoteague and eat in little local places. The food is just as good as the more upscale places and the prices are a better match to the food quality.

We finally got a chance to try this place.  We walked in around lunch time and it was pretty dead.  We were greeted with friendly smiles and taken to a table.  Our server gave us our menus and took our drink orders.

I'm a fan of crab cakes, and it seems everybody thinks they have the best ones.  So I decided to give them a go.  My wife got the flounder sandwich.  The kids got grilled cheese sandwiches w/ fruit cups.  I couldn't decide if I wanted the crab cakes broiled of fried.  In the end I decided on broiled because my wife wanted to split meals.

The food came out in a very reasonable time.  My crab cakes were big and plump.  Flavor wise it wasn't bad.  Not bland, but too spiced.  The crab meat itself were in very small pieces, but is o.k., as there was not very much filler.  It was basically all crab meat, which is definitely a plus.  I still enjoyed them, not the best, but decent.  Maybe if I got them fried, it would have been better.  Maybe next time I'll try them fried.  Now, on to the fried flounder sandwich.  While the flavor wasn't too bad, what made it hard to eat were all the bones.  Maybe we just to a bad piece, but it seemed like every other bite we got a mouth full of bones.    The grilled cheese sandwiches were fine.  It's pretty hard to mess up a grilled cheese sandwich.  The fries I got were basic, nothing fancy.  Just good ole fried potatoes

The people here were friendly.  Our server was always there checking up on us.  The restaurant was clean and orderly.  I'd come back here again, but that will have to wait for the next trip out here.

I love Mr. Baldy's. From the first spoon of oyster stew to the last fork of eggs this is the place to be when you're in the area. Laid-back environment, nice staff, great food, this establishment is a superstar.

We came to Mr. Baldy's with high hopes but were severely disappointed. Everything tasted like it had been pre frozen. End of story.

My husband and I were looking for a decent breakfast place on Sunday morning before we headed off the island to go home.  There aren't many places for breakfast on the island, but after reading other reviews, we thought Mr. Baldy's was just what we were looking for.

It's a simple place, nothing fancy...about what we expected.  They are sort of diner like, but the place has a weird layout.  They could probably fit like 10 more tables in there.

It was pretty as one would expect for a Sunday morning.  We were greeted before we even had the door all the way open.  And by greeted, I mean barked at to sit at a booth just inside the door.  It was dirty so we were instructed (not so nicely I might add...she pretty much yelled at us) to wait until they cleaned it (and that was AFTER she ordered us to sit there).  No big deal since someone came right over to wipe it down with an extremely dirty towel.  Whatever, that doesn't bother me that much.

We sat down an waited for our server. And waited, and waited, and waited.  We weren't in a hurry, so waiting wasn't a big deal.  What bothered us was that several other tables came in after us, were seated and given menus and drink orders taken.  Did I mention that we still didn't have menus?  That's right, no menus.  Well, my husband was starting to get cranky when we finally got menus and our waitress finally showed.

It was very busy, so I can forgive her.  I will say that once she came up to us and took our drink order, everything went smoothly and pleasantly afterward.  She was pretty fast, brought our drinks right away, and our food came at lightening speed.  The food was OK.  It was right for the price which is pretty cheap. I had french toast. I've definitely had better, but it answered my craving well enough. My husband had a combo thing that had eggs and french toast and homefries.  The homefries were gross.  I don't think they know what homefries actually are.  they were just little chunks of very old very dry very fried potatoes.  No seasoning, no onions, nothing.  Like I said, gross.

Note to Mr. Baldy's:  Homefries are NOT deep fries potatoes.  They are pan-fried, sliced   potatoes (NOT SHREDDED  for those of you who think so...they call those hashbrowns) that have been seasoned with salt and pepper and perhaps cooked with onions. This is NOT subject to interpretation...that's what homefries are.  This is a pet peeve of mine and really is relevant to almost all diners/breakfast joints outside of the NY/NJ/PA area.

But I digress.  When we were finished, we were instructed to go up to the register and pay.  It was awkward because register is pretty much at the server station and we were basically standing in their way.  We waited for probably five minutes before anyone came.  That's when we found out that the very unpleasant who sat us when we came in (who we had seen flitting around not really doing anything else but walking back and forth) was the hostess and cashier.  She was just as unpleasant as we paid.

The bottomline: because of all the waiting, we very not happy.  The food was only ok, mediocre really. And I would NEVER consider eating a lunch or dinner meal here.   We probably won't be back.

I was impressed with their breakfast options, speed of service, and quantity of food two days in a row.  I recommend this as a breakfast stop (do not know about their lunch or dinner).

The place is cafe-esque.  Cute table and wall decorations of kids and locals... charming and simple.

Why not 5 stars?  I would love options that include fruit, and not quite so many heavy foods like pancakes or french toast.  However, if you want french toast or pancakes... go here!

Affordable and good food. Plenty of seating and not too crowded. Went for breakfast and they have very stringent breakfast/lunch times.

Came with a party of 16 on a Sunday morning. They got us seated in 10 minutes. Friendly waitresses and the food came quickly and was good. Only complaint: hot, humid August day, crowded restaurant. The AC wasn't up to the task. Would definitely go again!

I was put off by this place because we went in and there was only one other table around 12:45 PM and the tables have glass on top of the table cloths which I find to be very tacky. And I kept hearing celebrity chefs saying restaurants are slow for a reason in my head. But the voices were wrong.

Our waitress was very attentive and kind. I got the turkey ranch and bacon  sub which was delicious. I just which it came with something besides chips.

Everybody else in our party of six loved their food, including my sister in law who is picky as hell.

This is a true hidden Gem on a back road.

First, with the possible exception of Woody's and Steamers, there is nowhere on Chincoteage that serves really good food.  Baldy's though, was truly bad.  Bad service, bad food.  The softshell crab was ...OK.  The $14 Shrimp Parmesean is clearly Sysco or Gordon's fried shrimp and sauce that rivals maybe Chef Boyardee.  We had to flag down a waitress, -Twice! to get drinks and take an order.  Should have followed my first instinct which was to get out.  I'll give it one star because nobody got sick.

Not too many places on Chincoteague, and this place is a little off the beaten path, but it is a good diner style place.

The decor was interesting, they must be huge Beatles fans, because you are sitting in a yellow submarine in the main dining area.

We went to a late breakfast, but they ended breakfast kind of early, which we were bummed about. It just looked like a breakfast all day kind of place.

Been here a few times for breakfast, and it was pretty good. Got a club sandwich most recently and it too was good.

This place was EXCELLENT.  We stopped here on a whim before leaving the Island for breakfast.  The pancakes were awesome, the sausage links were REAL (not those crappy little things you get at places like Bob Evans and such!) and the chipped beef gravy was just like my grandmother's.  This place is awesome, quaint and has good home cooking!

Bacon and eggs for $5.  Nothing wrong with that.

I do appreciate the Owner of Mr. Baldy's reaching out to me to apologize for my experience at their restaurant, as well as, their explanation that currently this restuarant is under new management. Thank you.

One of the few restaurants open during the off season.  It's a little dated, but the entire island is stuck in a 1970's infinite time loop.  Lunch was good and not expensive.

Stopped for dinner on a off-season Sunday night. Both of us bought the evening specials. Good, home-cooking! Onion rings, chili were both top-notch. Most friendly wait staff on the island for this out-of-the-way eatery. Open year-round.

Very very casual - staff is alright.  A lot of them were chatting here and there at the booth behind us, but I didn't care that much because they still served us with decent speed and friendliness.

Food was decent, nothing to write home about, but the menu selection was great.  A good place to take small children.

Very friendly and efficient service.  I had the chili omelet -- a tad disappointing because it wasn't spicy but I could always have asked the attentive waitress for Tabasco or something.  The grapefruit was kind of icky --- like they didn't shake the can up.   My boyfriend food was just what he wanted.  The toast and hash browns were good, too.

The place was old with character but clean (including the restroom).

I'd left my dog tied up outside.  Customers and staff were very friendly.  Nice place -- just what we were looking for that day.

Following my review here, Mrs. Baldy (aka "Tina" - like THAT's a real name!) sent an e-mail to find out when we visited, so she could talk to the kitchen staff and seek to avoid the slight irritation we experienced when we visited. Great to see this kind of attention being paid to their customers' impressions of their restaurant.

Small restaurant serving freshly cooked old fashioned American fare.  Went for breakfast...food was fine...place is small and gets loud.  Didn't care for the ambiance.  Very casual place...staff is friendly....seems everyone is very talkative and lots of locals.  The a/c unit was on though and I didn't like the heat coming on my face from the vent above the table it was hot and smelled like mold.   Was disappointed that that the home fries are prefab.  Nothing fancy here but food quality better than fast food and seems to be made fresh to order.

GREAT little country diner, at least for breakfast.  Concrete block construction on a pleasant residential street.  The pancake we had was fluffy and had good vanilla flavor. The corned beef hash was pleasantly salty. I'm told the breakfat sausages are great but will have to save that for next time.  Staff was very accomodating and very kid friendly.

This is definitely a great little diner. A couple of the guys that I was working with out in Chincoteague with and I used to come in here prety regularly for breakfast. The food is good, the price is cheap and the service is quick and pleasant. I'll definitely be coming back to this place
