i came here for a wrap party (not the food wraps). i dont think there was anyone else in the spot besides the people that were there for the party.
it looks pretty nondescript from the outside but once you get in, its a different story. the place is actually kinda cool.
i'm actually thinking about having a party there myself.
the only BIG downside is that they only serve beer and wine. maybe they need to change the name cuz when i hear "bar", i think about getting a drink, a real drink.
I enjoy Bar Pico's chill vibe, decor and atmosphere. But there are just too many strikes against it, and I don't think I'll be going back.
If you're a local musician looking for a spot to perform, Bar Pico seems perfect...at first. They offered my friend's band a monthly residency here and they ended up playing 3 gigs at this venue. All were fun times. But lately, the bookers have gotten in a nasty habit of double-booking the venue and canceling on one of the bands at the last minute. This has now happened to two bands that I know and would've liked to come see perform here. It sucks because the bands do take time planning and promoting their gigs, and it's a huge downer to find out that the show has been canceled at the last minute due to poor planning on the part of the venue.
The other major strike against Bar Pico is that they don't serve hard alcohol. I feel like the name "Bar Pico" is misleading. Other spots that only serve beer/wine/soju don't bill themselves as a "Bar" and instead call themselves a "Lounge" or a "Club," like Club Trip in Santa Monica. They really should get a full bar.
Rushed into the place to warm up my frozen bits on a cold Thursday night. Â From the outside, it looks like a tiny dingy dive bar. Â You walk in and it looks pretty decent. Like, this could be a real cool place.
But then.....
You hear Meli Malavasi (the entertainer/host of the night?) singing. I guess it was karaoke night but A)there were 12 people TOPS at the bar and B)no one was willing to participate. Â AWFUL! She killed Beyonce AND Lady Gaga for me :( Â
And then she wanted us to book her for private events? HELL NO.
I hear this place used to crack. I can see why. The place is nice. There is potential. But something went terribly wrong.
Rolled in here on a Friday night for some Geek Acoustic Night. Â Was really excited to check out a new place and to hear some live music. Â Unfortunately, many of the bar patrons were incredibly rude and talked over the performers. Â It was hard to hear the performers.
"I didn't know it was GEEEK night," said someone disparagingly between songs. Â Loudly. Â As if she wanted the performers to hear it.
Emboldened by my Riesling Peach cocktail, I wanted to be like, "Bitch, I didn't know it was-rude-ignorant-chicks-with-spray-tans night." Â But see, that sounded better in my head than it would have sounded in person.
But seriously, really, really, disappointingly rude customers.
There was one bartender on Friday night and the bar wasn't ridiculously stuffed to the brim, which was nice. Â The drinks are a little expensive (it needs a happy hour/well drink list) but the bartender was efficient and friendly. Â For an Los Angeles bar, it was a little weird to be the one of the only non-white persons in the entire bar, too. Â Um...
Bar Pico is a cute little faux-leather nook with comfy elevated couches and a large bar with space for performances. Â It is great that they charge no cover and there is ample street parking in the evenings. Â Expect to spend at least $10 a drink if you include tip.
I really commend Bar Pico for supporting indie artists, but next time I'd encourage them to either turn up the musician's audio so people can hear them or create a separate space for people who are there to ignore the perfrmers. Â I would not have thought of going to Bar Pico and dropping money on booze there if they didn't have indie artists; but I'm wary about going back. Â It was heartbreaking seeing people being rude assholes towards the performers.
LOVE this place. Great vibe. Live music everytime I come in. I think they have comedy night on mondays. Wish they served more than just beer and wine, but great place to go relax and have a drink. Not too hectic the times i've come in, but always a chill group of people. Would definitely recommend.
Review Source:Wandered in here after being kicked out of Upper West (they told us we had to give up our table at 8pm). Â On a Friday night, I could hear crickets. Â But, that worked for me since I didn't have to fight the bartender for attention. Â Also, plenty of seating made it a great place to catch up with friends. Â Yup, I'm getting old.
Review Source:This bar is exactly what the westside (and its music scene needs) with the exception that I wish it was a little less expensive outside of happy hour. Great champagnes, fantastic happy hour deals. Great stage set-up, 60's throwback almost. I've only ever seen amazing bands at this place, even at its open mic. The bartenders are super nice. Usually a lot of street parking is available. Nice collection of white & red wines as well. The no cover live music policy is also a huge added bonus!
Review Source:ALLAGASH WHITE Beer, 'nuff said. DUNDEE HONEY BROWN Beer, good second choice. If you are mid-city and on Pico, and you have had enough of "The Arsenal," then this is a good second choice rendezvous point. Weekend live music past 9 or 10p.m., DJ back-up. Or decibel-friendly to chat with group of friends. Always a little more mellow and low-key, yet hip, for Los Angeles. Did I mention they have the Allagash?!?!
Review Source:This particular bar is definitely the idea of a local. The kind of place you come to after a long day at work to catch up with a few friends and have a relaxing night. The bar is pretty small, with a bit of seating to the side that would work well for a medium-sized group. The bar itself is in the middle of the room and behind the 'tender you see a stage with ample room.
I came on a Thursday night around 7ish with a group of girls and they had an open mic of sorts with all female performers; most of them acoustic-- it kind of made me feel like I was at Lilith for a second. Our group made up most of the crowd, and everyone there was female.. not sure if this is common for Bar Pico? As we were leaving, a DJ began to set up and we got to hear a bit of electro.... we walked by again later and could hear hip-hop bumping from the outside. With that being said, it seems like they have a mixture of vibes depending on the time you get there.
The drinks are limited to a modest selection of wine, one type of sake and a few good beers. The prices weren't too bad either, considering.
I definitely recommend this place if you feel like a casual drop-in for a beer.
Another plus is they have a selection of nearby restaurants that will deliver to the bar if you wish.
Yup we make the crowd... all six of us! Hahaha!
Well there were a few other people that came and went as each aspiring musician went on and off the stage. We came to support a friend performing there...
It's not a bad place, it seems like one of those neighborhood bars/hole in the wall, but nicer looking, with bands or solo artists and a DJ and oh yeah, way empty ~sad.
If I lived closer I would deffinitely visit more often and also take over it with the occasional private party!
Well I enjoyed the place anyway... They do have limited parking in the back which they share with the neighbor corner bar The Joker, which is happening more by about ten people! lol! You can also park in the street.
Anyway had my beer, glad they have Guinness, enjoyed the no line ever to the loo, enjoyed the music. Oooh! and if you like popcorn, well they have that too :) ~freshly popped and the place smells like a movie theater instead of ( _choose your poison_ ) like other bars.
Enjoy!
It's just the updated Air Conditioned. Â Still a hole in the wall, still on the dead side alot. Â They've made some great updates blowing out the bar in the middle so the whole space is open.
It's PERFECT for private events, I mean you could take the place over, killer DJ, lounge/dance & bar side.
Just something very right about this space, always has been. Â Good Feng Shui.
Awesome little dive bar with a good selection of beers, live music & DJ. Bartender was attentive & friendly, crowd was mellow and there was no cover or wait to get in on a Saturday night.
My only gripe is that they didn't have any liquor, only beer, wine and one pretty nasty sake so it's definitely not an all night kind of place. Nonetheless it's great for a few drinks before dinner or on your way out for the night in Santa Monica.
I love this place.
We wandered in here on an elusive date night sans baby. Wow. Such a beautiful space. It Was, however, completely empty except for the bartender and the awesome band, The Vignatis.
We took advantage of some happy hour specials and enjoyed the music. It was a little weird being the only.ones on there but we did end up buying a Cd!!
A happy hour isn't happy unless there's cheap booze to be had. $4 drafts and house wine til 8 PM! But what really gets me happy about bar pico's happy hour is that they have my favorite--HOEGAARDEN beer! (Not an easy beer to find in a lot of bars). Just when I think it can't get better than having my favorite beer in hand, the bar kicks the happiness up a notch and throws in free popcorn to snack on, good music, low lights, and huge big screens to watch a game or two.
There is a catch, however, to all of their good selections in drafts and bottled beer. There is no hard liquor! But they'll still mix you a really delicious cocktail made of sake.
I hear there's live music in the bar sometimes that's actually worth checking out too, so I know I'll definitely have to come back some night when that's going down.
This is a really sexy, lush bar, with great vibe. We walked in one night and there was some pretty interesting live music, too. The place had a good crowd that night, but then other times it will be completely empty, which I don't get. I'm a wine lover and think the wines here are really good. I love the plush couches and red decor. It's true, though, they'd probably do a lot better if they had a full liquor license. Â Maybe the neighborhood only allows so many and the Joker has theirs, so...? Â But we could do with some more live music venues on the Westside that have a vibe, so I'm hoping this place catches on.
Review Source:I came here last night to watch a few bands play and it was fantastic! I had a wonderful time and the bands were great. The interior design was very well put together, it certainly has a modern feel to it. Â I was a fan of the circular bar in the center, although it did take up a lot of overall space. In fact it does get a bit difficult to move at times if there are a decent amount of people in there. Unfortunately we missed happy hour, but they do have one from 7pm - 9pm! Â With 3$ beers at that!
The only downside was that the restrooms only held one person at a time which is not enjoyable, especially if your a woman. Â
Note: If your in a band and you are interested in playing at this venue, be aware that the stage is very small. So be prepared to stand on top of each other if you have more than 4 people.
Weird to find ourselves alone with the bartender at Bar Pico Friday night at 830pm. Especially because they have CHEAP happy hour from 7pm-9pm. $3 beers and wine at 8pm? CRAZY GOOD.
The ambiance is pretty cool. Looks like it might get a little trendy and lame when a bunch of people show up, but not convinced that actually happens, as we left at 930pm and still pretty much no patrons besides ourselves.
As it stood, just us and the bartender and the $3 wine, I thought the place was great. In the case that you go and it does suck, though, just crawl down to the Joker for something divey and wonderful.
After eating dinner @ Lares (down the street) we walked to Bar Pico to grab a drink and just hang for a minute. Â The bar itself it small but has enough room and seats on both sides of the bar to get around. Â The decor was very nice. Â They had a movie screen playing Barbarella on one side.
We sat at the bar on the nice red leatheresque seats. Â The two female bartenders working were very cool/attentive/cute!
They have a large selection of bottled beers. Â I started my night w/ Boddingtons and ended w/ Stella. Â
They music was decent for a while....and I mean for a while because we didn't know that some girl was having her cd listening party there that night....so the music was good until she put on her crappy techno pop cd.
It wasn't too bad but as soon as she put her cd on...even her friends when back to talking instead of listening to her over-polished tunes. Â After previewing her 3rd song...we were ready to run out of there. Â We closed out tab and got the hell out of there! Â I feel bad for her friends who had to stay and pretend to like her S#!T!
I would definitely check out  this bar again!!
NOTE*
They DON'T have a full bar. Â They only offer SOJU ( a distilled beverage native to Korea. Its taste is comparable to vodka, though often slightly sweeter due to the sugars added in the manufacturing process((not real vodka).
So if you want a real drink..this may not be the place for you unless you're a beer drinker like me!
i went to bar pico for the first time recently and i loved it! Â i had been here once when it was still A/C lounge and it was just mediocre, but the new owner made great changes. Â it feels more open and modern.....i would definitely come here for a saturday night out with friends, but i would also come to nurse a hangover on sunday morning!
