This is a nice little tasting room. Very simple and elegant. You walk in and there is a large wooden table where you can walk to and get some tastings. The wines are local from the Santa Cruz mountains and being an alumnus from UC Santa Cruz I had no idea about the winery and I wish I found them sooner. There are also areas to sit and hang out and their wines and merchandise are all around for you to browse. I decided to try their reserved collection tasting and I was not dissappointed. All the wines were very good. My favorite was the Pino Noir and it's a shame because it's a limited supply so once it's gone, it's gone. The other wine I enjoyed was their LaVita which is a mixture of 3 different Italian wines. They tweak it every year so each bottle year tastes slightly different. There was only one person helping people when I went so maybe if they had another staff member working it would  be a better experience to get a more personal feel to the tastings and lectures on the wines. Left with a bottle and will be enjoying it later.
Review Source:Okay, this place might not have the beautiful views as some of the other wineries but boy does it have good wine (esp sweet wines for those sweet wine lovers!)
Ended up walking out of there with three bottles of their sweet wines, their honey mead with the mulled spices ++++ so good. Served warm on a cold winter night or even a chilly fall night would be good. Â Actually I can imagine it being good any time of the year.
If you pass by, you must go try their honey mead if nothing else!
But negative -1 star for being a little too persistent about their wine club.
Absolutely love this place! The servers are very knowledgable about wine and are not just repeating a speach. The wines are fantastic and very affordable. My boyfriend and I love being members of their wine club because you get to taste your shipments and replace anything you are not a fan of. We will be keeping this membership when we move back to Texas. Their selection is also so ecletic that you can take friends and everyone will find something to try. I can not say enough good things. I have never had a less than fantastic experience here. We always leave with at least 2 bottles of great wine :)
Review Source:Sarah helped us, and she was awesome! Loved all the sweet wine options, and bought the mead, which we'll warm up in the crock pot with the package of mulling spices included in our purchase to enjoy while we put up the Christmas tree and decorations this weekend :)
Sorry if some of the folks who wrote previous reviews didn't have a great experience, but they obviously didn't have Sarah as their hostess....she was great and made our whole tasting experience wonderful. Hubby likes reds, and really enjoyed their cab and the La Vita. Like I said, I like sweets, and their fruit wines (especially the blackberry) were super, as well as their bubbly and orange muscat.
I'm glad I invested in the Groupon for this place, because we might not have stopped in without it. A great way to try out new places, and this was a great find on Cannery Row in Monterey. Loved it!!
I'm a member, which  doesn't make me over rate them, they are just good!!  If you haven't been here in awhile, our never been come ck it out, the tasting room has been remodeled. There are couches to enjoy your wine, & also sale wine by the glass!! I'm not sure if you can buy a bottle & drink on the premises like at the Soquel tasting room. Â
For the cold weather I recommend a bottle mead. Take home a bottle to warm up along width the mulling spices. It will not only make your home smell nice but will also warm you up!! Enjoy...YOLO!!! :)
Bargetto was a great little place to get my wine fix in Monterey. Â As other reviewers have mentioned, Bargetto does tend to lean towards sweeter dessert wines. Â My two favorites of their dessert wines would be the apricot and pomegranate. They also make mead that oddly enough, tastes like Christmas. Â That was a bit much for my liking, but certainly a unique wine. Dolcetto was delicious too! Â
I can't say enough about the lady who facilitated our tasting. Â She was just the sweetest cutest most knowledgeable winery employee ever.
My friend and I who love wine, stopped there while visiting Monterey for the first time by accident. Joe was the person who helped us, was very knowledgable about the wines and even about the grapes that were used to make the wine. He was very gracious and sweet, and was a great conversationalist! I ended up loving their wines so much that I became a member of their wine club so that I could get a shipment of wines every three months!
My favorite dessert wine was their apricot wine, not too sweet, but with the taste of apricot!
I will definitely be coming back for more wine tasting experiences!
I didn't enjoy this place, despite the gorgeous location, but If you're a fan of sweet oddly flavored wines,, this may be the place for you! Otherwise skip it and head to Baywood Cellars or Taste of Monterey!
This place is located in cannery row (lovely place) and seems to specialize in the sweet dessert wines some folks start with when they are just learning about wine. I've been twice to this location--both times with visiting friends and family. The pourer seemed very friendly but also seemed to have very unusual idea about wine, and kept giving information that contradicted what we'd read and researched. I'm a Viking and love mead, but even the honey wine seemed disastrously off in my opinion. I felt as if i got a mouthful of Karo syrup and rubbing alcohol:-( We were regulars in many tasting rooms and vineyards along the coast, even helped harvest grapes and bottled our own once. We shared this info, but the guy still kept going. We were mortified. If you are a novice with a love of sweet wines, this place may be for you! But it just wasn't the place for our family. The shop sells some cute little memorabilia though, so you may stop in just for that!
This place is A-OK but was my least favorite of the wine tasting places I visited on Cannery Row.
$7 for 5 tastings is a good deal and the wines were good. Â With that being said, the server was super awkward and not that friendly albeit knowledgeable. Â I wouldn't necessarily come back here.
Without a view, Bargetto won my vote by having great wine and knowledgable staff. Â We tried their Mix and Match tasting ($7 for 5 wine): Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, Dolcetto, Syrah and Pomegranate, their Dolcetto and Pomegranate were my favorites. Â Dolcetto has the variety of flavors and tanning while Pomegranate is pure pomegranate fermented for 1 year, which is not common in most wineries. Â
The staff is very friendly and knowledgable about their estate grapes and the overall wine difference between Californian wine and French wine.
We love it, and buy wine here on most  visits to Monterey...I would say 15 years of patronage. If you get carded deal with it...it is the law...if you get cut off...you must be acting like an idiot. We have always had attentive service and this a fun part of our visits to Cannery Row. The wine is very good...we are apart of the club and have it shipped quarterly as a treat when we can't make it to Monterey.
Review Source:This was my first stop on my Monterey wine tasting tour, and even with nothing to compare it against I probably would have given it three stars. Â In hindsight I'm almost tempted to give it two. Â It was probably the least welcoming of all the wineries, and I was fairly consistently ignored. Â They were nice about it, and I was nice back thinking maybe this was how NorCal does its tasting rooms. Â Don't believe it - there are way nicer servers out there!
OK wines - not particularly memorable for me, but I had one or two that stood out at the time...unfortunately not ones I've remembered in the time since.
Well what a surprise, I was coming to Monterey for a day at the beach and maybe some aquarium action.. but when you put Wine Tasting before me, I lose all focus and I must partake.
This was somewhat of a weak tasting..but the winetender was a nice guy so I don't want to be a bitch but, their wines just weren't very good. They had a lot of flavored wines and that always just seems very Boone's farmie to me.
This place has one of my favorite wines, the Chaucers Mead. My boyfriend and I had visited this place two years ago and there wasn't a tasting fee then, nor rude service. Â We went back with a large group of people (10 of us) a couple of weeks ago. Â Here's why my rating is only a 2:
1. Was not greeted nor helped for 10 minutes. Â My boyfriend and I were literally shoving our ids at the girl to get her to serve us. Â The man that was serving next to her wouldn't even make eye contact with me. Â
2. One of the ladies that we were with didn't get carded because she's a lot older than most of us. Â She made a joke saying, "Why didn't I get carded?" And the male server went off on how "This is my bar. My rules. I card who I want to." Can't take a joke?
3. The man serving the wine was a pure asshole. He didn't care to share any information on the wine. Â Neither did the girl server. He told my boyfriends brother that he was "done." So rude! Â He also didn't wash out the glasses when going from white to red. Â My sister in law had to ask him to rinse it.
I could go on and on about how horrible the costumer service is. Â It's a shame that they are so awful when they have really excellent wine. Â I don't care to give them any more business when we weren't treated respectfully or thanked when we bought several bottles of wine.
I would definitely skip this place. Although you are missing out on some great wine!
During this road trip, Bargetto was definitely my fave wine tasting spot because they had more sweet wines to sample than the other wineries we visited. The tasting fee was $5 and I literally sampled about 5 different types of wines, mostly from the dessert section. My favorite was the Olalliberry which was so perfectly blended for my palette preference, I was able to brainstorm a few quick recipes I wanted to try with it including a reduced syrup to top over frozen yogurt, pancakes, fresh berries, etc. They
even sold wind skins that I was able to use to protect my bottles during travel. Cheers!
I really enjoyed myself here. They are located in a shopping center on Cannery Row. Their winery and another tasting room is located in Santa Cruz.
Bargetto specializes in Italian varietals. 40,000 to 50,000 cases a year. They have a long history in Piedmont, which they brought to the Santa Cruz coast. I really enjoyed their 2004 La Vita (60% Dolcetto, 24% Refosco, 16% Nebbiolo). I am going to be aging this wine for a while.
Not only was the wine good, but the pourers were wonderful. They were very friendly and knowledgeable. I would really like to check out their Santa Cruz location.
Bargetto's was the first place we stopped during our wine tasting excursion on Cannery Row. The prices are very reasonable, at $5 for a flight of 5 wines. There was a good selection, too. The dessert wines here are very yummy and fruity. I bought a bottle of ollalieberry wine to take back to my dad. The only glitch in the visit was that the sommelier miscounted the number of wines we had tasted and tried to say that we were done after only 4 wines. I felt embarrassed for having to insist that no, we had only tasted 4 wines, and could we please finish our tasting. I don't think I ever fully convinced him... either way, for the price and the quality of wines, I'm glad that we came.
Review Source:Also on Cannery Row, the wine tasting here was just okay. Â It is the only time in all of the wine tastings I have ever been to that I was carded. Â Perhaps it is their policy to verify everyone's age, I'm not sure. Â The wines were generally unremarkable, and the ambience of a private tasting room was largely lost here due to its location in a shopping complex. Â The pourers were able to answer questions well, but they generally needed to be prodded to say something. Â The cost of a flight of wine was $5. Â In a wine tasting tour of Monterey, I could miss this place and be alright. Â I'm largely indifferent.
Review Source:With such high reviews of this cozy shop, I suppose I expected the same fabulous service everyone else seemed to receive, but alas, our visit was fairly short and uneventful. We weren't greeted right away and the gentleman that helped us was cordial enough. He didn't seem overly friendly, but maybe because he was a newer(?) employee? Not sure because the other worker was telling him there was a Reserve Merlot that wasn't on the tasting menu that was part of the wine tasting. But our guy never said anything to us or even offered after we just heard these two workers talking about it... Odd.
Anywho, the wines were all ok, but nothing special stood out to me and $5 to taste 5 wines was the right price point. The bf, however, liked their Pinot Grigio, which we purchased a bottle of. The cashier lady was also a little on the stiff side, but after our purchase we all bonded over Cork Pop refills.
Overall, an ok place to try out, but will definitely try the other shops first before I come back here.
I throughly enjoyed this winery on a Sunday afternoon before going to the aqaurium. Â These wines were all from the Santa Cruz mountains and therefore were a bit different than the other tasting rooms we visited that day.
I definitely recommend trying the Olallieberry- it was sweet but tart and dark. Â It tasted as if the sweet was directly from fruit, not the sometimes overly sugary syrup wines.
The tasting was only $5 for 6 wines- not a  bad deal and if there are two of you there is an abundance of wine to taste.
I like this place a lot...it's cute, humble, and the people here are really laid back. It's not as 'classy' as A Taste of Monterey, and didn't have the nice view, but I liked the decor and vibe of this place. Their tastings are only $5, and they had these really yummy, fruity dessert wines that we ended up buying too.
Review Source:A couple of weekends ago, my boyfriend and I went down to the beach to relax and enjoy the sun. Â It was a nice day that was topped off by a stop at Cannery Row. Â
Enter: Bargetto Winery Tasting Room
We stumbled upon Bargetto's tasting room because we were craving something sweet. Â To make a long story short, we found ourselves sampling 5 wines for 5$ a person (changed from 6 but still a deal). Â I liked about 3 of the 5 I chose and a couple my bf picked. Â The guy helping us was really nice and to top it off, when we ask for a restaurant recommendation, he mentioned that several area restaurants offered free corking for Bargetto wines (saves you a lot of $$). Â He showed us a card with the options and we picked Fish Hopper (which was great). Â In addition to the free corking, we also got a free appetizer with his recommendation. Â So let me break it down for you.
We bought a bottle of chilled Bargetto Rose wine (which happened to be on 50% off sale - surprise) for only 9$ (normally 18$), took it and our corking and appetizer card to Fish Hopper. Â There, we got a free calamari appetizer (12$ value) and they corked our wine for free and so for the price of 1 glass of the restaurant wine, we got a whole bottle. Â Then, we split a surf-n-turf entree because with the appetizer, wine and bread, we were already so full. Â
It felt like we got a great deal!.. and paid to drink a bottle of wine! Â :) Â 5 stars!!
We'll definitely see if they're still have this offer the next time we are down in Monterey.
See ya there!
Canary Row is awesome! Â Great shops, old world apeal...and wineries! Â I mean tasting roooooomss! Â
So we grabbed the address to this place from our hotel concierge and headed out. Â It was super easy to find in a building with other shops. Â We enjoyed the company and the service. Â Reasonably priced bottles, we left with some. Â I especially loved the Dolcetto. Â Yum!!
Non-descript little wine shop which offers tastings of 6 wines for $5. Â We found a coupon in one of those millions of travel brochures located in any hotel for 3 free tastings of their premium wines, which normally cost $2 each. Â I got to taste maybe four dessert ones and two regular wines, one of which was not on the tasting menu bc I told her I like sweeter wines, and she had happened to open a bottle of something sweet recently. Â It seems like most places do not offer many sweet wines, so I was happy this one did. Â We ended up buying a Raspberry liquor - I think it was a champagne. Â They also offer chocolates that look exactly like olives with your tasting for free.
Review Source:Delicious dessert wines! Even though it is in a touristy place, the tastings were cheap-- $5 for 6 generous wine tastes. The muscats were amazing and floral, though perhaps too sweet for some. Wines were moderately priced.
We were a little ignored during the tasting because another couple looked fancier than we did, but at least we weren't pressured to join the wine club like fancy couple was.
Dear 2007 California Orange Muscat,
Your sweet nectar still lingers in my mouth. Â I can't forget the hints of lychee and pear that tickled my tongue that you embody. Â When Tiffany, the friendly wine steward of this unpretentious and welcoming establishment introduced me to your golden hue, my pupils dilated with excitement. Â I even felt that you were teasing me when warmhearted Sally, the knowledgeable sales manager, told me the secret of your creation. Â How is that you, so eminent and extraordinary, can be found in such a commonplace that is Cannery Row? Â After enjoying the other varietals from Dolcetto to Merlot, it is you in the end that has captured my senses! Â Last and chilled to perfection, you are my unforgettable dessert! Â I was very delighted when you joined my fellow and me in the evening of our introduction, and was in ecstasy during our further encounter. Â You're poison suppressed my inhibitions and persuaded my true desire to be known. Â You are truly the perfect treat! Â I am longing for our next rendezvous...
Adoringly yours,
W
I was killing time and hanging out on Cannery Row...which was interesting for about 15 minutes before it just became too touristy and clogged for my tastes.
But....there like a beacon stood the Bargetto tasting room.
My sommelier was wonderful--he was knowledgeable and friendly and easy to talk to. Â He had lots to talk about, both re: wine and beyond and I had a lovely tasting that got me quite buzzed by 11am.
FREE tastings too! Â Some of their finer wines are $2.00 a taste, but no pressure there. Â They have a great selection of reds and whites (I just did reds--and mead, out of curiosity).
Well-priced bottles across the span--$12 to over $100. Â And also some nice wine-related paraphernelia that I splurged on. Â
If you need to step away from the families and old folks on tour buses, drop by this place for a relaxing and enjoyable (and very tasty!) respite.
So glad I stumbled on in...or more accurately, stumbled out an hour later...
In a sea of cheesy, not-ready-for-Pier-39 tourist traps was this surprisingly nice, friendly, and uncrowded tasting room. The pleasant and unassuming staff poured a wide selection of interesting Santa Cruz reds and whites. As I've been doing, I focused on Italian varietals (some made in SC from Valley or foothills grapes, others grown on the estate) and walked out with two inexpensive bottles worth cooking a dinner around.
I didn't notice the tasting fee rules... but hey, if I like the wine I always buy *something*.
Right below the famous "A Taste of Monterey", there is this Bargetto tasting room where you get to taste up to 6 wines for FREE. Â They have few premium wines marked for a $2 fee, but, actually, there is a way to get that fee waivered if you are observative and curious enough. Â I do not want to publicly disclose the trick, just to be fair to the store. Â The store person was saying that I was first ever to notice it. Â Just shoot me a message if you are thinking of going here and wanting to save $6~8. Â
As for wines, the 2001 LA VITA was heavenly. Â Merlot was nice too. Â If you like big red, this is a must try.
