Barnett's has been my "go-to bar" for the last three years I was studying law--Because I am in law school, "I don't go to bars often...but, when I do, I go to Barnett's first." So, I gave it 5, not because it's a crazy-fun time, but for its divey-local feel with good drank.
It's small, like a dive bar, but it is relatively nice inside with rugs, leather chairs, and sofas + many tables with plenty of space to sit on most nights.
The bartender-owner [Trey], is...well... Irish (well, he's technically Scottish, with an Irish attitude). He's a man-man's bartender who tells you how it is, whether you want to know how it is or not. He knows his bears and scotch, so you can trust his recommendations. But, be prepared for him.
His mother, on the other hand, is a saint... or a pistol... both. She's a wonderfully nice lady in charge of the kitchen and general operations--try her queso... it's the best in Waco.
In Sum: The bar has an awesome beer selection that always changes and a few scotches--I've seen worse and better, but not many, especially in Waco. But, most importantly, it's a great environment for chilling out and having a good beer or scotch with friends. It gets busy, but not insane like Treff's, Scruff's, Crickets or any of the others like that. So, you can hear each other and usually find a place to sit down. It also has darts, board games, and TVs with sports usually playing.
This was my first time here, and I'm glad I came in. This place has the feeling of a pub I've only dreamed about having in my hometown, the kind you see on TV or in other countries. Ryan is a really good bartender, and quite friendly. All of the customers seem to float in and out of personal and group conversations naturally. Most importantly to me, there was no one wanting to start fights or making anyone feel unwelcome; I got a very family-like feel from the place. This was a nice change up for me when it comes to Waco hangouts.
I believe they rotate their kegs weekly, and  even have a mug club I am interested in. They have a very nice selection of beers and liquors. I will be going back, and I will try the food next time.
Only 4 stars for now until I can try the food and more beers. :-)
