This place is overall really good (except the service and the wait). We went there on a Tuesday night for a quick bite.  It wasn't quick at all.  They didn't have any tables available because they had some kind of a school event so we sat at the bar.  After few minutes school event ended and guests started pouring in.  There was one bartender, one server and a manager (kitchen seemed like there was one person working there). We ordered few appetizers which came out after half hour of placing the order.  Steak Tartar $9, was superb, loved it and there was plenty of it, one of the better steak tartar I have ever had. Pickle Chips $5, very good, enjoying fried pickle with a German beer is a must. 12 Deviled Eggs $3, these were very good as well.  Another half hour past by and we finally got the soup.  Dumpling liver soup is to die for if you're not scared about the liver part. I mean this soup is so tasty I could have had gallons of it.  After half hour we finally got our dinner.  Beet Salad $10 was delicious, Bauerburger ButterKase $11.50 very good as well, we did add the butterkase cheese on it.  Despite the burger being cold it was still good.  Sausage Platter $16, is not worth the money, it was cold, tasteless and will definitely not order this again.  When I think of German sausage, I think of flavor, garlic, mustard, spices, nothing was striking about the sausage, very plain. So for restaurant that became empty after the school event, the SERVICE was TOO SLOW, some food was COLD but mostly delicious.  I will be back but not for service and sausage.  I will definitely try some of the other items on the money.  Décor is typical German place. I will do 8/10 for this place.
Review Source:Horrible resteraunt !! Â We drove over an hour each way to try this place with a groupon. Â Website said they open at 4. About 4:15 we got there, we were seated and part of our order taken, Â the manager came over Five minutes later and said we would have to leave because they were having a private party and wouldn't open until 6. Â I told her we drove an hour each way and she said this never happens, Â what will never happen is me going back there!! Â How embarrassing !
Review Source:First off the food here is very good. However, we had a few service issues and  problems with menu availability.
It wasn't a big deal but we asked if they had pumpernickel bread and the waitress said they had just run out. It was only 7:30 on a Saturday night so clearly they hadn't ordered enough.
When I made our reservation I asked what they had for dessert because we were coming for a birthday. The women told me that apple strudel was on the house for birthdays. When I told the waitress we had a birthday at our table she said they were out of apple strudel because she had just served the last piece. Really? On a Saturday night?
Overall, the food was good, as I mentioned, however, we were disappointed with the potato pancake. It was like a fried patty of hash browns. Not what you normally expect from a potato pancake.
Also, the was a really bad draught and we were so cold we had to ask to switch tables.
I think it must be more of a drinking than dining establishment. As the evening progressed the music became louder and louder and we were yelling at each other across the table.
The atmosphere is very authentic and the beer selection is great!
They have batch 19! Big ups, I fell in love with the stuff when I was at the brewery in Colorado and it was rare to find it in Chicago when it first came out. Â Sadly I can no longer ingest beer, but I am still giving you a star for that. Â The waitstaff here are great and a lot of fun. Â The food is to die for, wether it is authentic or not I have no clue but you could have food me! Â The boots are great to drink out of and the whole place has a fun atmosphere. It is sad the place is so underrated compared to the sleazy bars in that Palatine area. Â I used to come here with my boss after work and we always had a great time, being regulars gives you perks =]
Review Source:I am very upset with my disappointing experience. Â We went there for lunch today and the service/food was horrible. Â Walk in and there is no one to seat you, eventually we were noticed and told to sit anywhere. Â The older woman (owner or manager) was sitting in the middle of the restaurant with her big calculator and paperwork either doing payroll or paying bills. Â (this should be done elsewhere or after lunch hours when your guest are not watching you calculate your business) Â Our waiter never asked us if we wanted anything to drink other than water, and when my husband ordered a Ruben for lunch the waiter told him they were out. Â THIS IS CRAZY..... ITS THE FRIDAY BEFORE ST. PATRICK'S DAY AND YOU DON'T HAVE CORNED BEEF? Â We also ordered the fried pickles because it is usually one of our favorites, but they must have changed pickles because my husband and I both tried them and neither one of us had another. Â The entire order was left minus two pickle slices. Â The service the entire time was painstakingly slow (there were only 4 tables of diners) Â and the kitchen was slow to make the food. Â It's a shame that they are not providing the service and food that they should...this place has a great beer selection and huge potential for more.
Review Source:What German restaurant runs out of potato pancakes and cabbage on a Friday night before 6pm?!?!  And the real kicker was our waitress who lacked any form of personality reported in a deadpan style.  The beer selection was great, the appetizers were okay, the food was mediocre.  Two of us ordered the schnizel sandwiches which was less than impressive.  The other two ordered  sauerbraten and schnitzel dinner.  Their reports were about the same. But serious...no potato pancakes?!  That is the most outrageous thing I've ever heard.  It's made from potatoes, not golden eggs.  I'll never go back.
Also, I understand this place playing the local sports games as well...I'm a Chicago fan myself. Â But, once the Hawks went on it was nearly impossible to talk with my table mates. Â Maybe that's for the better...because all I could complain about was the lack of potato pancakes.
Shouldn't have gone for the first time on a Friday night, but I did call ahead and we got a table right away. Cheese curds, fried pickles, and deviled eggs. Three for three. All good. With a couple of wheat beers, really good. Topped it off with warm apple strudel. I, for one don't mind loud places, so that and not enough drink and food runners. On a busy night you will be waiting. So if your an impatient person who doesn't like noise, may I suggest you not eat here or anyplace else for that matter.
Review Source:Went here for the first time last night and it was a terrible experience. Husband had mussels and began vomiting six hours later and still suffering effects of food poisoning. My amish chicken was "bloody." What food was cooked appropriately was dried out, like leather. We aren't picky but after a $200 total bill for our party of 7, little of it was eaten.
To make matters worse, it was very cold and the service is less than attentive/friendly and takes forever, so we were there much longer than we intended.
It has a college bar feel, playing classic rock hits, so we weren't thrilled with ambiance either. Stay FAR away from this place.
This place filled a void I didn't realize Palatine had. We have been here a few times, and while I'm not impressed with the servers' outfits (what you'd expect for a woman to wear when serving beer at Oktoberfest), the beers are cold and the pretzel is great.
I've been there at night when it's more like a crowded bar, and I've been there during the afternoon where it's like a normal restaurant. Both times the service was just ok. The last time, our server wasn't wearing her "outfit" and basically said she didn't feel like wearing it so she wasn't going to. Ok, but isn't that part of the work dress code?
It's fine. I don't dislike coming here, but I don't love coming here either. But the Husband and my parents really like it, so I'm sure I'll be back.
My wife and I stopped mid-week for dinner. Being our first time here we were not sure what to expect. A german restaurant or a sports bar. We decided it was a sports bar with german undertones. The place is clean with lots of dark wood, cozy lighting and comfortable seating.
The tap beer selection is very nice with an extensive selection of pilseners and lagers of German and Austrian origin which is right up my alley. The Stiegl Pils was cold and fresh, although it wasn't served in the proper glassware. No big deal but I'm not a fan of mugs. They also had some mid-week beer specials which were great deals.
Being fairly late we didn't opt for any of the german entrees. We both started with soups - liver dumpling and pureed parsnip. Both were quite good. My wife had a smoked salmon salad with arugula, eggs and potatoes which was excellent. I had the skirt steak sandwich with portabella mushrooms and a creamy horseradish sauce. Also very good. For dessert we split the homemade apple strudel which was fantastic.
Our server was attentive and friendly which helped to make our first trip to Bauer's a great experience. The only drawback for us was the multitude of TV screens around the place and the loud music playing. However, we will be back to try some more traditional german offerings next time we visit.
Came here with the in-laws last night as they had a Groupon. Â You'd think since they are closed Sundays & Mondays that on a Tuesday they'd have everything on the menu available, right? Â Nope. Â It took poor mother-in-law three attempts before she actually found something they weren't out of. Â Her first two attempts? Â The cod fish & chips and the Reuben. Â She ended up ordering a brat & our server gave her a bowl of soup for free.
We each had the beer flight - and all the beers were good. Â The nice thing is if there is a certain beer you aren't fond of they'll double-up on another if you let them know. Â The food was just okay. Â 2 of the entrees came out about 1 minute after we received our soups so the manager offered to keep 'em warm. Â My father-in-law & my meals were the last to come out - we both ordered the Sausage Platter - and all items on the platter were just luke warm.
Our server was very nice & I'm sure the Groupon was a great deal but I won't be coming back unless it's just to sit at the bar & watch a game while enjoying some beers.
My first (and probably last) trip to Bauer's Brauhaus was mediocre at best. We came in at 4:30 on a Saturday for an early dinner. We walked in, no hostess. No discernible waitstaff anywhere. We asked the bartender if we should seat ourselves, and he said to wait. After several awkward minutes hovering in the doorway, an older lady asked us where we wanted to sit. I'm not even sure if she worked there or was a patron; she was in jeans and seemed slightly confused. We picked a table.
It took several more minutes for a waitress to approach our table with menus, and then she ran off. I felt bad for her; she was running all over the restaurant. There were only 4 or 5 tables occupied, and she seemed to be in charge of all of them, and was literally jogging from table to table. The frustrating thing was that there were two other waitresses present, and they were just standing around. First they stood by the kitchen and chatted for a while, then they went over by the bar and stood around by there for a while. Then they came back by the kitchen, where they proceeded to stand and look at the food that was waiting to be taken to patrons.
After 20 minutes, we flagged down one of the lazy waitresses and asked if she could take our order. She seemed reluctant, saying we weren't really her table. Then the poor busy waitress ran up to finally take our order. The food, once we got it, wasn't bad; the fried pickles and burgers were tasty. We tried to order one of the beers on special, but they were out of it. Keep in mind, this was at 4:30 on a Saturday, so I think it's ridiculous that they were out of it so early.
I'd say this place has decent line cooks and one really hard-working waitress, but the rest of the waitstaff is terrible and the management really needs improvement.
Best Bier selection in NW burbs (Until Hoffbrau House opens.) Â If you show up expecting a Bar and Grill atmosphere, you'll be pleased. Â If you're expecting a great deutsche dining experience, you'll be disappointed. Â They're open until 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights, emphasis is on the bar side. Â Â Like the Austrian said, I'll be back.
Review Source:Honestly....this is the first time I am writing a review ever...so this place is pretty special for that....we went there because we had a Groupon. First off, that was a great value! The beer flights were fantastic and all the beers I had were great! Although the beer flight was put in incorrectly for someone else in our party, that jumped it down a bit but the beers were great so it's back up. We had the mussels for an appetizer and the sauce was GREAT! We also had very large portions of both entrees (Amish Chicken is great!) and good service throughout! The moosehead was pretty cool and overall there was a good amosphere. I like this place and I will be back!
Review Source:Amazing and badly needed transformation of the old Christl's, although we LOVED Christl's old apple/cherry crepes not on the Sunday menu for DECADES. If you remember Christl's, check out the new bar and then go into the men's bathroom, you won't believe the transformation.
DOZENS of German draft beers, Prince Edwards Mussels, steak tartar, fried pickles, deviled eggs, interesting sandwiches suprisingly well prepared and with an attention to spices and herbs I haven't seen anywhere else in Palatine. We weren't expecting that much and were very pleasantly surprised. Still basically a Sportz bar with a LOT of TV's and you get a whiff of beer half way down the block, but damn it was GOOD. Expertly served by Karen who seemed to be doing rooms of people, on her birthday yet, and making it look EASY. Very reasonable flights of beers to taste, and daily specials. Happy hour and Bear game hot appetizers. Far above your usual German pub sports bar food.
We are fans. TRY IT. We had an expired Groupon we had never gotten to, and were just expecting to use the cash value. Not only did Karen take her time, in a busy room, explaining how to optimize the full groupon with TWO flights of beer (SIX 5 oz glassesX2) and their TWO best appetizers they honored the FULL expired value as in $50 worth of fun, instead of $20. NICE people and crowd.
We'll be back. The Beet salad and Reuben sandwich are calling.
4 1/2 stars rounded DOWN for a first visit.
My husband and I wanted to try something different for lunch. Â We saw this German bar on Yelp and thought we would give it a try. The food at this establishment was not terrible. It was nothing to write home about either.
The reason I am giving it two stars is because of the operations. My husband and I arrived on a Saturday afternoon at about 1 pm. There were about a total of fifteen customers and ONE worker to sit people, take the orders, worked the bar and served our food. He was wonderful and pleasant but needed help. This place could have used one or two more workers.
So, after the slow start I was informed that they were out of the dish I wanted to order for lunch. Ok, no problem I will pick something else. I ordered my second choice and then my husband ordered. Well, wouldn't you know it. The ONE front of the house worker, then told him that they were also out of the dish he wanted. What? How could you be out of two different dishes? Â If we were not really hungry we probably would have walked out.
The place is cute and clean. The food is ok. Would not tell friends to visit.
We split the Bratwurst and the Steak Sandwich with our choice of battered fries or potato salad. Both were awesome on great fresh rolls ! The Steak Sandwich is huge and cooked to your desired doneness with arugula, portabella mushrooms, and an amazing sweet horseradish sauce. We also had some tasty beers but were $6 each which really jacks up the check. Fun atmosphere. But they were out of potato salad. Our friendly waitress admitted openly that they are always out of something which means to me, having worked in restaurants, that they strive to keep everything fresh. Lot of great restaurants in that neighborhood!
Review Source:Went in on a Thursday night with my girlfriends family and was sat right away. Ordered beers which were priced reasonably. I ordered the sausage plate which was very good. I only have two complaints about this place. The first is that they ran out of the wine my girlfriends mother drinks and second is that they ran out of the side that I ordered. Although the side I eventually ordered was excellent. Â I recommend this place.
Review Source:GREAT beer selection, but that is all they have going for them. Â Been here a couple times and the food is just meh. Â We've had the pork schnitzel, the pretzel, the potato pancakes, the fried pickles, and the burger. Â The pretzel was not soft, either overcooked or stale or a combination of both. Â The fried pickles were fine, but man do I crave Lillie Q's instead. Â The schnitzel and the burger aren't bad, but the potato pancakes are probably the best thing we've had there.
My advice, go mostly full with just enough room for beer.
Really about 3.5 stars, but I choose to be conservative on this first visit.
I arrived on a Sunday morning around 11:30 and was their first customer of the day. Kind of an older looking place inside, but what I noticed first as I sat at the bar was the disinfectant smell. Better that than a "bar smell", but there's something to be said for cleaning thoroughly the evening before so there are no lingering chemical smells when the place opens.
I ordered a potato pancake appetizer and pork schnitzel, which came with liver dumpling soup. The potato pancakes were kind of hashbrown-like with some onions within. They were OK, a little good actually, but not like potato pancakes that I have had at other German restaurants. A little pricey at $6 given their composition.
The liver dumpling soup was really pretty good - great flavor and served pretty hot. Pork schnitzel came with a mushroom gravy sauce over it - one piece fairly large served with spaetzle and red cabbage. The red cabbage could have been a little hotter. Spaetzle was a little oily, but tasted good. Schnitzel was OK - had a slight spiciness to it - similar to the potato pancakes, just a little different than what I've had at other German dining spots. Not really a ton of variety - was surprised that there were no rouladens on the menu - that's usually a staple.
Food service was somewhat slow, especially since only two other parties came in while I was there. Slowdown seemed to be in the kitchen, not with the server, who was attentive and pleasant. Not a big deal as I wasn't in a hurry, but something to remember should I choose to go there again.
I'll probably try it again sometime - it's the most convenient German restaurant to where I live.
Fun Place to hang out and drink from a boot!!! I cme here on a Friday night with a few friends, we had already ate so we just ordered a few beers and the pretzel with cheese....This pretzel was amazing!!! First off it was huge, that all three of us ate from it and we still had some left over, the cheese sauce had just enough kick to it to add to the pretzels awesomeness. Next time I would get it without salt though, but at least the salt pieces were big enough to brush off easily.
While we were thier my friend decided to order the boot(ok,ok, I ordered it for him)....it was $25.00 but you get a TON of good german beer in it. I helped out as much as i could but we had a few beers before we ordered the boot so sadly it was not finished. SO my suggestion is order the boot first before you start drinking beer....haha you need all the room you can get!!
I'm not typically a fan of the old-school German establishments; Bauer's is a new-age take on traditional German fare. Â While it was unanimous that their spin on steak tartare was a miss, everything else was pure perfection. Â They even have some amazing dishes for those who aren't too keen on German food. Â Best potato pancakes I've ever had. Â Fully stocked bar. Â Live music that tends towards obnoxious, but after a few steins of beer it's all in good fun. Â The staff rocks the goofy costumes... The men appreciate the serious cleavage that's on display... Whilst I continue to be mesmerized by the animated faux moose head that's the jewel in the crown of this fantastic watering hole.
Review Source:Toll! Wunderbar! (And other cliche German-expressions of general awesomeness)
So along with random Groupon purchases, my fiance and I found ourselves with a Groupon for two beer flights (each of us with 6 - 6oz. authentic German beers that they had on tap retails at $12) and an appetizer of our choosing at the Brauhaus.
We both ended up choosing the super yummy Currywurst (a fried Thuringer sausage) which was accompanied by delightfully battered and fried french fries, all with a light drizzle of their curry ketchup. After a little while I ordered us a plate of their fried pickles -- and honestly these are some of the best deep fried pickles that I've ever had. The batter was so thin and crunchy, and a little greasy and salty -- the perfect companion for a few beers. (The curry ketchup is a better dipping sauce than their aioli though.)
It was all in all a very nice, quiet, leisurely lunch on a late Saturday afternoon. Our waiter (the bartender) was really nice and easy-going, the food was great, and the beers even better. Between the two beer flights we were able to try almost all of the beers in the place (and find out which ones we liked).
We'll be back, and we'll probably have some family and friends with us.
Ich brauche ein wunderbar currywurst und ein glas bier!
I went here on a date on a Thursday night and the place was packed! Â There were no seats at the bar, so we snagged the last available table. Â They were out of menus and asked that we share one. Â This was okay because we were only planning on ordering drinks. Â The waitress came back after a little while and we placed our order. Â It took another little while before we got our drinks... sensing a theme?
In the bar, the music was extremely loud... we could not even hear one another.. we had to yell across the table. Â Then everyone else in the place was yelling too so it made it very difficult to hear anything. Â They were playing Christmas music too... and the CD was on repeat. Â We hear the same songs at least twice and we were only there for less than 2 hours.
My chief complaint was how cold it was in the restaurant. Â My toes are still defrosting! Â I was shivering the entire time... it made me not want to drink because the beverages were cold... it also made me wonder how cold the food would be when it arrived to people's tables. Â I seriously doubt the heat was even on.. I think they were banking on the heat from the kitchen or the body heat from the patron's!
Bauer's got BAC!
1. Blood Alcohol Content guaranteed from their wide selection of local, domestic and imported beers.
2. Bomb Azz Curds.
We snagged a high window table for 7 before midnight and my eyes instantly locked on the Reuben. A sweet waitress in a German Bier Maiden costume informed me that it was Bar Menu only, so I reluctantly settled for the Cheese Curd appetizer. I was expecting them to be overly battered, hard on the outside, super squeaky inside and room temperature. They were none of the above. They were spectacular!
The curds are huge and fried to perfection. The batter is light and crispy and the cheese is flavorful. They served them with a side of buttermilk ranch and I was skeptical. Only truly bland curds would need a side sauce. I suspended my disbelief and gave it a try. I can say that these curds can hold their own and are "State Fair worthy," but the tangy ranch did not offend my taste buds. In fact, they complement each other quite nicely.
Können Sie mir bitte den Bomb Azz Curds?
I had such high hopes for this place, I wanted it to be the Essen House in Madison or at least a shadow of it, I wanted there to be people drink out of giant glass boots, five liter ceramic mugs being passed around, I wanted there to be a live polka band and people old and young dancing and have a fun time...sadly I did not get any of these things.
Instead I got an average bar with a German theme but with TVs everywhere. Â They did have an excellent selection of German beers, at decent prices, served in liter sizes - the only saving grace. Â They have German bar food they might also have full meals but all I got were pretzels and rich desserts, which were okay at best. Â Also, there is also a large mechanical moose head that is both shock and terrifying. , but a plus to the decor.
When it comes down to it, I just did not have much fun there. Â Maybe it was the people there that day, maybe it is the Palatine audience, maybe it was the expectation I had for this place. Â It could have been so great, they have the market, they have an okay location, they had the cash but it ended up being just okay.... I will give this place another shot with little to no expectation and see what I get, maybe I will bring a crew with me and make my own Essen House or at least have a little bit of its spirit with me way out here in the burbs, but I feel like we will end up just getting kicked out and told not to come back...which might be for the best.
The bar manager is a toolbag. He sits there with a rat face and judges the jukebox.
The beer prices are competitive but they don't blow your socks off.
The atmosphere is nothing to write home about.
The waitress got this place bumped from a 1 to a 2 star experience. With other options in downtown palatine you'd be smart to look elsewhere.
Nice, city-hip, German restaurant and bar. Â I'm not a big fan of traditional German food, so I like that they have burgers with things like spicy bacon jam, and the rest of the menu is 21st century. Â The fries are really good and so is the giant pretzel, though the pretzel is a tad overpriced at $8.
I live in Palatine and I think Bauer's gets it right - the owners clearly have put in a good amount of money to make a place that serves food and beer, but doesn't look tacky like some other local places. Â The kitchen is a little slow (maybe because food is not thawed frozen food like you get at other Palatine bars), and there is a really kooky waitress, but everyone is extremely friendly and when I've been there service is prompt.
At the end of my first review I noted that I would be going back in a month to see if they were able to get their act together.
It's been 6 months and sadly, we won't be going back.
This time around we walked in on a Tuesday night around 6:00pm.
There were only 2 other tables occupied in the place so we had our choice.
The host was clearly not engaged with what he was doing.
It really felt like we were an imposition on whatever he was doing before we arrived.
We sat and ran through the menu, which seemed oddly light on entrees. Â After a little more investigation it turned out that our host had given us the Brunch menu. Â Honest mistake I thought until I saw the folks at the next table turning theirs back in for a dinner menu as well.
That absentmindedness seems to permeate the entire place.
Or waitress seemed like there was somewhere else she would rather have been as well.
Our beer arrived and, truly, it was the only thing that was prepared correctly.
We started with potato pancakes. Â While they weren't inedible, they were very peppery. Â And I like pepper, but these were not the traditional German potato pancakes I had expected.
We also had the opportunity to sample the deep fried pickles. Â They were overly greasy and the sauce was, once again, overly spicy.
To be clear, I really like deep fried pickles. Â We had the good fortune of trying them at Lucky Monk in Hoffman Estates a couple months ago and they were excellent. Â Crunchy outside, almost like panko, while the inside remained crisp. Â The Monk serves them with a chipotle sauce, so it's a little unfair to compare. Â However, I can say that for all the spice of the chipotle, it wasn't overwhelming to the taste of the pickles.
That's not the case at Bauer's.
The batter was soggy and drenched with grease, the pickles were mushy and the sauce killed off any other flavors I might have wanted.
I followed this with a cup of the liver dumpling soup. Â The soup was passable, but curiously flavorless and without spice, which was a real contrast to the potato pancakes and sauce that accompanied the pickles.
For our entrées we ordered the German Cabbage Roll and the Pork Schnitzel.
Both were disappointing.
The cabbage roll was flavorless and the tomato sauce it was swimming in was watery and completely unappetizing.
The pork schnitzel was overcooked and tough while the spaetzle was rubbery.
We both left about 2/3 of our meal on the plate.
When asked by the waitress if we enjoyed our meal, I graciously said "no".
She apologized, but when you have two people who have left more than half of their food untouched, it's probably time to call the manager over to see what the hell is going on.
No manager, just a check , which we waited quite awhile for, then waited to pay, then had to check again because the waitress thought she gave us back the wrong check and credit card.
About 10 minutes after we paid, a second waitress came and filled my water glass, for the first time.
Based on my experience 6 months ago, water must be an awfully valuable commodity at Bauer's Brauhaus.
Bottom Line: Â it's been 6 months. Â That's plenty of time to work out the bugs in the kitchen, with the waitstaff and with management. Â Bauer's doesn't seem to see any problems and so their service and their food are disappointing all the way around.
That was our last visit to Bauer's. Â We won't be back.
I really liked this place.
#1 bathrooms: They are clean, inviting, have a Dyson hand dryer and they even have a little shelf to put your purse.
They had a pretty good beer selection. Lots o German brews (duh), and quite a few crafts ones too. The food smelled soooo great. We weren't eating, but I was living vicariously through the pretzel and other apps our neighbors at the bar were feasting on!
Prices were reasonable, and everyone looked cute in their little beer girl outfits. We will totally be back, especially because I spy a Groupon for this place!!
Was excited to try a new German restaurant in the area. Shouldn't have gotten my hopes up.
I knew the minute I walked up and saw the  flower boxes filled with plastic flowers that this wasn't going to be good. I could have been okay with the flowers if it wasn't spring/summer weather and everyone else in the area had real plants. geezsh.  Anyway, onto the important stuff...
Food- awful. Absolutely no flavor. We had the fried pickles, which I generally love, and they were just eh. Nothing special. Also tried the cheese curds- okay I guess, hard to mess those up as far as I'm concerned. For dinner everyone ordered the schnitzel (pork, veal, and chicken) and no one liked it. So bland, no flavor, felt like I was eating some kind of deep fried food I would find at a fair. The spaetzle was good, but again, that's hard to mess up.
Drink- The beer menus had about four to six beers literally crossed out with a black marker. Still, they had a decent list.
Service- our waitress was great. Very attentive, fun, talkative. The busboy was very eager, would grab empty dishes almost immediately, polite.
Atmosphere- odd. The place would be really cute and enjoyable if there weren't TVs all over. Very distracting. Keep them to the bar area.
Two stars because our waitress was nice.
Better food at Fritzl's in Lake Zurich
Will not return
I have to admit I had much hesitation before walking back in these doors. This place was previously one of my favorite little gems for wonderful cheap German cuisine (fully equipped with a cute little German lady in the kitchen) before it was transformed into the current Brauhaus. Having said all of this, let's get down to the good, the bad and the not so ugly....
WHAT I LIKED:
The waitstaff was quick and attentive. Â
Beer sizes/selection was decent. Â
The renovation on the place was tastefully tacky (moving moose head and stein chandelier).
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER:
The prices were slightly high for the area (only slightly however).
It appeared that the beer was all served cold...it's an Americanized German place.
There is only one stall for the lady's room, so a line forms outside of the door into the main sitting area.
THINGS TO EXPECT WHEN VISITING:
A moving moose head.
A mostly mid 40s-50s crowd.
A visually stimulating atmosphere (Dirndl clad servers included).
A pretty ok German beer selection.
I gave this 4 stars because I'd go back again to enjoy a drink or two with my friends. I didn't give it 5 stars because it was nothing mind-blowing or spectacular.
Went on Saturday night 8:30. The place was packed. They do not answer the phone and do not take reservation. We sat in the bar. But honestly, the whole place is a bar.
Extremely loud environment. Acoustics are terrible, loud music and t.v.'s don't help.
Food was o.k. Veal not properly pounded out, but it was good. Pork was not good. Â Soup was sold out, salad was acceptable.
Beer was the best thing here. Very fresh, nice glasses, good selection.
Main menu very limited. Only about 6 entrees to choose from. I guess this is a bar with food.
Owner did not seem to be present. Disinterested host. Waitress working hard to make up for owners lack of interest.
Entrees $18.00. A bit pricey for a bar
I will give it one more try before I raise or lower my star rating.
Visited for the first time this past Saturday for dinner. Â Place was packed, but the hostess was able to get us a table almost immediately. Â Food was great! Â We started with the pretzel which is HUGE...yet yummy! Â Then we both had the veal schnitzel and spaetzle. Â Food was great, service was very good too!
There are tv's everywhere showing sports. Â Gets kind of loud, but fun.
Only suggestion...get there early. They are still working out the kinks and run out of things from the menu. Â Pork schnitzel and potato salad were gone by the time we got there around 7:30pm. Â
All in all....I would definitely go back....food and service were a thumbs up!
