So much fun, delicious food and good service. what else someone needs?
I went with a group as always. About 50 people and we have a blast. Live music, the chicken dance (for real!) and a shot of a German drink offered by the owner/manager. So nice!
I love the food! Had smoked Salmon with a mild, tangy apple-horseradish sauce Appetizer on toasted rye. It was excellent! Tried also beef schnitzel, I can't help.. Reminds me so much of my childhood! Next time I want to order this with mushroom sauce. Yum! And also the puff pastry shell filled with creamed chicken and mushrooms. Ohhhh and the pastas... I want to try it all!
Can't wait to go back!
Bavarian Grill is always a fun dinner. Whether it's live music night or just a quiet dinner, I always enjoy the food and service. What I don't enjoy is the kids who scream every time the train that goes around the ceiling goes by their table, but that's not the restaurant's fault.
The food here is incredible, slightly overpriced in my opinion, but totally worth it. You get really good portions and there is something for even the picky eaters. I have tried almost every dish on the menu and there hasn't been one I didn't like.
The beer list is extensive and the waitstaff is very knowledgeable about what's on it.
Pro-tip: the pretzel bread in the bread basket is probably the best bread you'll ever eat.
This was my first time at the Bavarian Grill. My mother's side of the family is German and they all LOVE German food (of course), and I do not. So for me to like this place says something! My sister also took her mother in-law here while she was visiting (A German native) and she said this is the only truly authentic German food she's had in over a year (she currently lives in CA). She just went on about this place. OK, now for the review:
I was also there on Saturday June 8, 2013. As one previous reviewer noted the power went out. This was not the restaurants fault as I later found out. It turns out the entire grid in that neighborhood went out that night as well. This is such an extenuating circumstance that I felt I needed to write a positive review to counter that poor one.
First: the service. Service was OK. I would not say it was superb, but I would also not call it sub-par. Let's face it people. Every table in there is a BIG TOP. If you have EVER waited tables you know what I'm talking about. ONE table can sit up to 16 people (we had 13 in our party). They have a waitress for the table, and a "runner" that assists the waitresses as well. This place is an atmosphere to allow you to have fun and take your time. This is by no means and "in and out" place. So, if you bring 30 people, ALL with split checks, and the power goes out, sorry. It would have taken 3 hours for your table under normal circumstances. We were halfway through our meal when the power went out. I do agree that once the power went out they probably should have just stopped taking orders-especially if they couldn't get computers back up and running.
Our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable, and STRESSED! I felt SO bad for the servers as they probably got SCREWED on their tips that night; as they could not do anything to fix the computer server that went down due to the outage. The restaurant offered to call everyone once they got the tabs tallied up and tell them what their charge was so people could get out of there. We got a call later on that night. To me, this was accommodating the customer. We did not ask for a free meal; the outage was not their fault. I however have huge amounts of empathy for the employees, my husband and I being in that industry for a long while. There is only so much one person can do, and they can't comp EVERYONE'S meal. That's just not possible (the booze people were drinking alone had to have been astronomical). From what I understand if you DO plan on going with a good sized group, always get reservations as I hear there's always a wait.
Second: the food. Like I said earlier I do not like German food. I was a little disappointed when I found out we were going to be eating here initially. However, I was SO WRONG. The food at this place is AWESOME. Nothing here is healthy. It's good ol' German comfort food. I had Waginger Rinderbraten mit Meerrettichsoße (braised beef with a horseradish cream & potatoes) and the hubby had Jäger Schnitzel mit Spätzle und gemischtem Salat (schnitzel with a mushroom cream sauce). My beef was so incredibly tender that I needed no knife, and the hubby's was awesome too (and I dislike pork-one of the main reasons I typically don't like German food). We also got an order of the potato cakes to start with and those were amazing as well. The dumplings that came with my husband's food took me back to the memory of my grandfather's cooking when I was younger. They get 5 stars for the food alone. This place is rated one of the top German food restaurants in the nation and now i know why.
Bottom Line: Everyone should visit this place at least once. Go with a group of people, have no timeline, and most of all HAVE FUN!!! It is not a place for pretentiousness. We WILL be making a trip back sometime; maybe when I feel like I've worked off the calories. Oh, and I agree with another commenter: the breads ARE awesome.
This place is absolutely terrible. By terrible I don't mean terrible in the normal sense of bad food and service, more so that the entire place was one big failure.
Some background on the night was that me and a bunch of friends took a large party bus to eat there. This was supposed to be a great birthday meal for one of my friends, but it turned into the meal from hell.
It started off with simply terrible service, where it took around 30 minutes to get our first round. Then once we got that round, the electricity went out in the place. They quickly went to a back-up generator for the lights, but there was still no AC!! The place started burning up, and it got so hot that they opened up a door that was right next to the smoking section, so the whole place smelled of cigarettes. Then after another hour of our waitress running around with her head cut off, she took our orders.
Now, we rented the bus for three hours, yet at the end of those three hours half of the people hadn't received food yet. We asked the owner Jeurgen if he could help pay for the extra hour (it was now pushing 3 hours with no food!) and he did not offer to do anything for us. The restaurant was empty and the band had left because it was so hot, yet we were being held captive waiting for our food.
Yet the real fun part came when it came to the checks... The restaurants machines went down so they spent the better part of an hour writing all of our orders down manually. Then they had us give them our cards which they would copy down, but not process until their machines went back up. Unfortunately, they did not have menu prices on their items, so they didn't even know our totals. To have us pay then, they had everyone sign a copy of their receipt without the actual totals on them! Are you kidding me? this was the most disrespectful thing I had ever seen. We are there for 4 hours, half of us not even getting food, and now they want everyone to sign a blank check.
Now I've been to restaurants where bad things happen, but its the way they handled it that made this place truly the worst experience of my entire life. They never once offered to pay part of the bill, help pay for the bus, or even apologize once for what happened. We took a party bus to their establishment, and somehow its our fault that we need to leave after 4 hours of getting no service, baking in the heat, and then having to sign checks with no totals.
If you have made it to the end of this long review, I beg of you, please do not give these criminals any of your money. There are too many restaurants in DFW to have to submit your self to this torture.
Wow, I have been woefully remiss in not reviewing this place. Â This is my favorite German restaurant, period. Â It is the best German restaurant I have visited, and I have visited more than a few.
There is also a large bar and biergarten-like area if you only want to come sample their amazing beers.
Speaking of beers, I have been here enough times to earn one of their beer steins, which requires you to drink one of every beer they have. Â It took me years, but it was a fun task. :-)
First, there's the ambiance. Â Staff in German attire, German decoration, and live German music (often in lederhosen). Â Check.
The service is generally fantastic, even when it gets crowded, which is quite often. Â The staff is always pleasant and courteous.
The food is also great. Â What I love about it is that they have great standard offerings, but they also have a rotating seasonal menu that is both tasty and educational. Â If I don't go for something seasonal, I will usually go with a sausage plate (always with some smoked bratwurst) or Jaeger schnitzel.
They reputedly import their bread. Â It's all good, but the pretzel bread is far and away the absolute best, so much so that I ask them to just bring that out. Â Seriously, it's good, and I usually don't think bread is worth the calories.
My favorite sides are 1) the vinegared salad (I forget their name for it) with various vinegared veggies and 2) the potato pancakes (I put both sour cream and apple sauce on them). Â Oh, and the red cabbage is great too. Â If you like creamed spinach, you will probably like theirs, but it is richer than most I have tried, so fair warning.
This is my "go to" German place and the place by which I measure all other German restaurants.
I am stunned at the negative comments I have seen, but we all have different expectations and I guess some people have fantastically bad luck. Â I mean, I have probably been here at least 50 times over more than a decade and I have tried a LOT of different food here and it has always been at least good. Â One the rare occasion I think my server is slacking, I will politely nudge them and everything is sorted out immediately. Â In my experience, if they do mess up, they do a good job making it right.
If you like German food, you should go here. Â if you are curious what German food is like, you should go here. Â Hell, if you are hungry or want some great beer, go here.
It's between a 3 and 4 for me; going 3 since so many reviews feel overly gushy.
Our experience:
The menu's in German! yay!
Typical Bavarian offerings!
Onion rolls were deelish!
Tantalizing beer selection
Schnitzel was pretty dang good, actually! (split it!)
Rotkraut! (red cabbage, which is like candy to me. try it!)
Some of the sides were meh
The prices are a tad high
After the initial high, the level of kitsch started to wear on me
Bottom line:
It's something different, and it's good enough at zie Bavarian experience to occasionally be worth the premium (certainly less than a trip to Bavaria, upon which you fall into a tourist trap, where the food is worse)
The.Beer.Selection.
I think some of the waitstaff are the only reason this place has four stars. Even the performer seemed to have given up and his flirting with the "Plano trophy wives club" was kind of desperate.
My husband and I went in last night and were seated quickly at an awkward table next to the swinging kitchen door and right by the corner where the sad little train seems to sigh "I think I can I think I can" as it attempts to heave itself uphill behind the wall to make another depressed go around the restaurant. Toy train aside, this place was terrible. I didn't like this place the first time a went a year or so ago (I grew up on Edelweiss in FTW) and it seemed to have taken a plunge since.
After our bread came out we ordered the cheese plate which took almost 15 minutes to come out.  Even then, canned mandarin oranges?! Really!? The cheese was okay but I didn't expect top quality, the place has worn green carpet so expectations can't be super high.  After another 15 minutes our entrees came out, the husband never got his mixed salad until after entrees came out. The husband ordered the pockets (oversized ravioli) with "veal"  in a broth with mozzarella on top. It looked so wretched... Almost gray in color. I decided to play it safe since I didn't care for the food previously, I got the grilled salmon with mashed potatoes and spinach. How hard is it to cook a piece of salmon? Oh wait, I guess when it's frozen it's a little difficult huh? The sauce on top had a terrible flavor that seemed to match whatever sauce was in the spinach. Yuck. I'm a connoisseur of mashed potatoes. I know the difference between flakes and homemade just by looking at it. I have made enough in my lifetime to figure it out. They had a gummy texture. I finished my salmon because I wasn't going to waste $16.75!  We decided to try and wash the yuck out of our mouths with dessert. Bad idea. I ordered the chocolate mousse thing. I believe the description said something about a "light mousse", try jello chocolate pudding put in a ring mold on top of some kind of weird spongy cracker thing. The description also said there would be white chocolate shavings. I got white chocolate dust... at best. Like the kind you see in the bottom of the container. : / gross. The husband tried the apple strudel. Terrible. It was burned on top and they tried to cover it up with a ton of powdered sugar. The apples inside were undercooked and weird bitter. Not like tangy Granny Smith apple, bitter like they had preservative on them. My dessert had about a 3 inch diameter and was $6.25... saying it was overpriced would be an understatement.
Back to the stars.... I could tell other tables had great service. They were upbeat young gentlemen walking with a quick pace. The waiter we had couldn't be bothered to speak in a volume that we could hear over the music and he seemed to be more concerned about flirting with the hostess.
I always like to give a place more than one shot. This place was terrible both times with this time being worse. Not just an off night. This place needs an overhaul. Make the drive to Fort Worth and go to Edelweiss, the atmosphere and food are far superior.
So sad that a place we used to really love isn't a favorite any more. Â Recently we stopped by for some schnitzel and rouladen. Â It was mid afternoon so it wasn't real busy but the wait staff was slow and unattentive. Â
First they tried to sit us next to the door where the ice machine was. Â Lots of empty tables and I wasn't happy about sitting next to all the noise and traffic so we opted for another table. Â
We started with the bread basket which was very good. Â It would have been nice if the waiter had checked to see if we wanted more, however, we rarely saw him except to take the order and deliver the items. Â He never checked to see if we wanted more, how the meal was, or refresh our drinks. Â He also forgot to bring the salad before the meal. Â No excuse because they were not busy.
The schnitzel was paper thin, over cooked and the breading was oil soggy. Â The warm potato salad was tasteless and the potatoes looked and tasted like they came out of a can. Â
The vegetable salad was ok, however, the green beans lacked flavor and tasted like they came from a frozen bag with dressing poured over. Â The beets were good. Â Most of the items didn't taste marinated and the dressing was a bit bland.
The rouladen was small and the gravy had a "too much flour" taste. Â The creamed spinach was definitely made from canned spinach. Â I'm pretty sure the oven potatoes were made from frozen potatoes and not well cooked.
The beer and bread was the best part of the meal.
If you've never had Bavarian/German food or if you had never eaten there a couple of years before when the food was fresh, you will find the meal acceptable but over priced. Â
Sadly we won't be going back any more.
Disappointing.
My first visit to the Bavarian Grill was sometime in the early 2000's and was amazing. So amazing that even though each subsequent trip has been worse than the last, I still wanted to come back. Â Lately, however, the quality of food has declined past the point of "off night for the kitchen." Â
My wife's potatoes were from a mix and bland, my entree was essentially terrible beef nachos, the bread was reheated and dull, and the most redeeming thing I ate were the beets from my salad. Â Adding insult to injury, my desert (their signature apple strudel) was burnt and the apples were too bitter to make digging them out of the blackened mess worth the effort.
Perhaps my visit was heavily influenced by the overwhelming gymnasium smell or, alternatively, it was just not good. This will be my last 'off night' visit so I'll never know.
This comes as close as humanly possible to the incredible German food my Omi used to whip up. In addition to the great eats, there's a good selection of beer, a fun atmosphere complete with live music, and a super friendly staff.
I've been here numerous times over the years, usually for special occasions, and it's always been fantastic. Most dinners are between $15-$20 and well worth the price.
The Bavarian Grill is a family run business in Plano.
They specialize in German food with a Bavarian tilt.
The selection of German beers is great. If you can't find one you like here it's your own fault.
The food is very authentic, ranging from Bratwurst over a variety of Schnitzel and Sauerbraten, etc. They also have specials on a regular basis, depending on the season.
Currently they are running an All-you-can-eat special for Prince Edward Island mussels on Wednesdays. They cook it in a garlic, herbs and white wine broth and they're pretty delicious.
Their Schnitzel is good as well, rolled out to a big, thin pork or veal cutlet, lightly breaded and cooked just right. Add whatever sauce you like (Rahm, Jaeger, etc.) and you'll have a good dinner.
Often they have live music, so if you're a fan of German Volksmusik, check on their website when an artist is scheduled.
Altogether, I really like the place, but I still somewhat prefer Joerg's Vienna Cafe. Mostly because of the slightly lower price point, but also because they have some Schnitzel variations I prefer over those offered at Bavarian Grill.
Best German food in the Metroplex, hands down.
Yes, this place can be a total zoo on Friday & Saturday-- make a reservation & you'll be fine. Â Biergarden is the place to be on weekend nights, the bands are always fun- especially Alpenmusikanten & Blastkleinmusik (I probably butchered one or both of those, but you get the idea). Â Come for the food & terrific selection of ALL German beer, stay for the authentic, supremely fun music. Â We've never had a bad time & we've been semi-regulars for more than 10 years.
Saturday night we had reservations for 11, of which 2 of the folks were handicapped at 6:45. Â The folks who were at the table where they were going to seat us had finished eating by 6:30 and were just hanging out enjoying a birthday celebration. Â An hour later we were finally seated after my sister approached the folks who were at the table. Â She had explained to them (after she wished the birthday girl a "Happy Birthday") Â that there were elderly and handicapped people who had been waiting for nearly an hour to be seated. Â Jurgen was impotent in moving them along so we could be seated. Â The restaurant was packed, surely way over capacity and both the Hostess and Jurgen were flummoxed. Â There was no seating for the handicapped, nothing in the restaurant was handicapped equipped. Â (Although I don't know about the bathrooms). Â Additionally, Jurgen was extremely rude to us. Â He went so far as to stick his nose into a conversation I was having and began arguing with me!
Finally we were seated. Â Right next to an extremely LOUD accordion player. Then our waiter came over, took our order and that was the last we saw of him. Â *Poof* into thin air he went. Â Never came back to check on the table, see if anyone needed anything, didn't refresh drinks. Â Nothing. Â Finally one of us tracked him down and told him the table needed some things. Â (After the meal was just about finished.)
And the food. (We all lived in Germany for many years, we know and love Bavarian food if its authentic and properly cooked...)
Saurbraten: Â On the sweet side, meat extremely over cooked, dry and about as chewy as jerky. Â Potato dumpling, decent caraway flavor, extremely dense and doughy. Â Red cabbage was good.
The Oktoberfest Chicken: so dry it choked the person who ordered it.
Pork Schnitzel: Â again, extremely dry and chewy. Â At least the breading was crisp.
Remouladen was good.
Decor: dirty, old, kitschy, oppressive.  Too numerous to count touristy postcards of Neuschwanstein Castle.  You might think to yourself  trouble lies ahead if there is a very large jig saw puzzle taking up a lot of space in a restaurant.  It screams "Pull up a seat and get busy with the puzzle, it's going to be a long night."
Ambiance: Â Miserably loud and cartoonish. Â Little girl servers in ill-fitted dirndls with girly parts falling out. Â
I can NOT believe this place has a really good Zagat score. Â Just means they can do way better to impress food critics than they do for the average Joe. Â The average Joe who puts $ in their pockets so they can eat and have a roof over their head.
Major disappointment all around.
Absolutely zero Gemütlichkeit here.
For those that have never been here before, you have to go at least once. The food is very German and the selection of beers from Germany is just off the charts... If you don't like to eat but just drink, this is your place too... Just hang out in the beer garden. So many people so much fun and so many beers to choose from.
Review Source:Years ago, I used go to Edelweiss in Fort Worth for some of the best German food in the area. Â Unfortunately, they've really gone down hill and I've had to find some other place to get my German food fix. Â
While the Dallas-Fort Worth area has at least 10,000 Mexican restaurants from which to choose from, there are only a handful of options when it comes to German food. Â Bavarian Grill in Plano has become my first choice. Â
I love their bread basket (especially the pretzel rolls), the mixed salad (carrots, green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, and pickled beets) and the Chicken Schnitzel (which is huge, and better than their pork version). Â The goulash soup is delicious, and by all means have one of their beers on tap (the Franziskaner Wheat Beer and the Kostritzer Dark are particularly good). Â Food wise, my only disappointment has been their desserts (good, but not great). Â
As you might expect, they have a live band that keeps things festive. Â The service is good, and I always look forward to going back.
This has been a wonderful go-to place for good German food in DFW for the last several decades.
The service is great, the food good (not great, but above average to be sure), and it's a nice place to hear live music with a group and drink and be merry! Â I like coming here whenever I'm visiting Dallas.
After having a few trips to Munich I was in search for a good Biergarten locally. Â While Bavarian Grill does not quite meet the same spirit of the biergarten I visited in Munich since it is in a strip center, the food and atmosphere are certainly authentic.
We went on a Saturday night and it was very crowded. Â We were given a postcard of a German landscape as our number. Â After about 15-20 minutes at the bar a waitress in German barmaid attire came and found us based on our post card.
We were seated in the main dining room where there was live music by a guy in lieterhausen playing the accordion. Â Later in the evening he passed out song books and we had a sing along. Â Not all songs are German, for example "roll out the barrel" and "Yellow Rose of Texas".
The beer choices are all German and authentic. Â There were about 20 different choices on tap, from light to dark to wheat. They even have the 1 liter mugs that the HoffBrau house in Munich use.
As for the fare, the menu is typical Bavarian fare.  A couple of choices of snitzel, roasted chicken, roasted duck, and spatzl.  I ordered the schnitzel prepared with a light gravy type sauce that was excellent.  The mashed potatoes served with it were cold and over satured with garlic.  I substituted  the vegetable medley with the oven roasted potatoes with bacon and they were very good.
My wife ordered one of spatzl  dishes and I had a few bites and it was excellent as well.
During every visit to Munich I have to get the Apple Strudel with vanilla cream sauce, so when I saw this on the menu I had to try it. Â While good, I was disappointed. Â The ratio of apple to pastry was off, with way too many apples, though they were very well flavored. Â The pastry on top had a number of charred black spots that negatively impacted the flavor.
After 2 0.5liter beers, 1 .3liter beer, 2 main dishes, and dessert it was about $65 pre-tip. Â A bit more than I had budget for dinner, but the food, beer, and ambiance was worth the price. Â
So 4 stars since the potatoes were cold and the dessert didn't quite measure up.
I go out to eat at small places a lot and I had been looking for a German eatery. I choose this place based on the reviews.
The employees were great, loved the staff. The decor was scattered and eclectic, and the menu had plenty of variety. I chose a schnitzel with mashed potatoes and some dumpling things. I also had desert, ordered two different ones, a cake and a mousse.
Now for the bad part, the food. The schnitzel was extremely tough, the mashed potatoes tasted and textured like instant, the cake was frozen and obviously served from a delivery truck, and the mousse was basically a chocolate jello pudding cup. The only good part of my meal was the dumplings.
I personally have no urge to return.
TL;DR - Too much hype toward their food, was edible.
It's not a brauhaus, or a gasthaus across from a brauerei, but if you're in Dallas and not Bavaria, it's the place to get a great beer, sausages and/or schnitzel. There is even a small braugarten in front . Fun place for a special evening of Bavarian celebration, or just a quick beer, or many beers, or lunch. Prices are reasonable and the food is really good.
Review Source:Good German Food - Lunch is Great - Dinner is a little pricey
I really like this place, and when I am in this neck of the woods, I try to make the stop... a great secret is that the lunch prices are fair! Â You can get a schnitzel for under $10. Â The menu is typical german, and I love that they change the specials with the seasons. Â This place has pretty good food, and the schnitzel usually is really good. Â Lunch is around $10 where dinner is closer to $20, so there is a big difference. Â Portions differ, but the lunch portion is plenty. Â The sides sometimes are hit and miss, but I really like the frnech fries, and the alpine potatoes. Â The Ham hock for dinner is always fantastic, and at dinner you get live music, so that is really a plus. Â For lunch we sat out in the beer garden and that was a nice experience as well, sort of like patio dining... anyway, the food is good and I can strongly recommend this restaurant for lunch or dinner...
The 4 star rating is for  the food only.
I am torn about this establishment. On one side, Bavarian Grill is an authentic place to eat German food and has got amazing pretzel buns. It is well-prepared home food. I liked the portion size. On the other side, the way this restaurant is run is chaotic. Waiters seem to juggle their direct responsibilities of taking orders and bringing food with responsibilities of a host/hostess.
Have you ever wanted to go to Germany but didn't have enough money for a trip to Europe? Â Well, this may be your best chance to get a taste (literally) of Germany without having to spend thousands of dollars.
The first thing you notice as you walk up, is a sign that directs you to the Bavarian Grill or to Munich. Â Lucky for you, your trip is only a few meters to the left. Â As you walk in, you'll see a bar where people are drinking beer. Â Ah.. Â I feel like I'm in Germany already!
Lederhosen?! Â Yes, Herr Musik (Mr. Music) is wearing traditional Lederhosen and plays the accordian for your listening pleasure. Â Sometimes the music is a bit loud, but it's tolerable and he does chide the audience at times. Â It's entertaining if that's what you like. Â We were meeting friends who had been away for two years and were trying to catch up so that was a bit frustrating.
Our friends have already gotten a table and we sit down and decide that we'll order a paprika schnitzel and our friends are ordering the funf (5) Schnitzel platter. Â The wife had already eaten so she said she'd just have a small portion and I could have the lions share. Â The food was actually quite good. Â Schnitzel was good, but I was pretty hungry so I could have eaten more. Â I suppose had I not shared the entree, I would have been well sated. Â If I had gotten a schnitzel without breading, I would have been starved. Â The "warm herbed potato salad" was okay. Â It didn't have a lot of taste, though it looked like it was potatoes with a dijon mustard sauce.
You get two complimentary baskets of bread, each with 4 different rolls in them. Â They're all very tasty.
It must have been everyone's birthday because the cowbell birthday song was played 3 times at least while we were there. Â They serve up a dessert to the birthday boy or girl and then the waiter or waitress comes out holding a tray of different sized cowbells. Â A different waiter, starts playing "Happy Birthday" on these cowbells. Â They play at the speed of about, quarter note = 30. Â Meaning one beat per two seconds.

So on so forth. Â It's super be-labored and the waiter does not seem happy about it, throwing the cowbells into the tray after this musical aptitude test. Â It's novelty is high the first time you see it. Â The next time, indifference. Â The third time, annoyance. Â Even the birthday boy was covering his ears it was so loud.
The waiter was super nice and helpful.
Best German food in N. Dallas - period. Â The dishes are cooked when ordered and accented by bread and atmosphere that does them justice. Â
This is my "go to" place to eat if I have my choice. Â Love the Schnitzel's, Sauerbraten, Champignons and pretty much everything in the place.
The owner is involved, actively seeks feedback from customers and will make it right if something does not meet his (high) standards for dining.
Great variety, great atmosphere and definitely worth a visit.
My evil twin, her hubby, two kids another family friend and I have been getting together for dinner every other Friday night for a couple of months now. Â Each week a different person gets to pick where we go. Â So far, we've been to Norma's, Blue Fish, and Kenny's Italian.
I had been here once before with a friend way back in 2005 but I couldn't even remember what I had.  So I when I found out that Tracey's hubby had picked Bavarian  Grill for this past week's Evil Family dinner... I had to call my friend and ask what I ordered.
I was told to order the Jäger Schnitzel which was a breaded schnitzel is topped with a rich sauce and many mushrooms, served with tiny pasta dumplings and our signature mixed salad. Â
Along with 4 bread baskets we started off with Kartoffel Pfannkuchen mit Sauerrahm und Apfelmus (potato pancakes with sour cream and apple sauce) and 3 cups of the  Gulasch Suppe (Spicy Goulash Soup with beef, pork, paprika, onions and peppers).  This soup is going to be the reason I add this to my "Comforting Soups" List (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/list/comforting-soups-dallas">http://www.yelp.com/list…</a>).
The Schnitzel was great and crunchy and the mushroom grave was rich and delicious.
I loved the Signature Mixed Salad... cause lets face it. Â When you are allergic to lettuce, how often do I really get to enjoy a salad? Â Shredded carrots, sliced pickles, sliced beets, tomatoes & green beans. Â It had a great dressing on it and was my favorite thing of the night.
Chris joined the beer club so I'm sure the Evil Family Dinners will circle back to Bavarian Grill soon.
Best German food I have found in Dallas. Â It is surprisingly crowded so make a reservation. Â I love the Rham Shitznel and the garden salad with beets is amazing. Â The entertainment is amazing. I love the accordion player. He has such great personality. I actually bought a CD. I want to take my dad here when he comes to visits but I am afraid he will get on stage and yodel along with him. Welcome to my childhood folks. Really.
Last time I was there I had the filled pasta topped with Swiss cheese. I can't pronounce it but damn do I love it. The goulash was also amazing and the cucumber salad reminds me of my grandmas. I sure missed out as a kid turning my nose up at all this yummy food my grandma would make. Bavarian Grill captures it al beautifully.. Â Many great German beers to choose from. Â I have loved everything I have tried there.
So glad we finally decided to try this place out. Â The hubs and I went here for our weekly lunch date. Â Our waiter Michael did a fantastic job! Â He was friendly, attentive, and did a great job in explaining the different sausages. Â
You get a basket of 4 different types of bread. The pretzel bread was so good! Â I was tempted to order more but I wanted to save room for my entree. The first basket of bread is free. Â If you want another basket, there is a small charge.
I ordered the Schnitzel  "Weiner Art".  It was delicious. Crispy, pan fried to perfection, and had great flavor. The portion was huge and ended up only eating half of it.  It came with a mixed salad and potato salad. Both were good.  The salad is not your typical salad with lettuce. It consisted of small portions of pickled tomatoes, cucumbers, sliced carrots, green beans, and beets.  The husband went with the 2 sausage plate (smoked bratwurst and nornberger)  with sauerkraut and potato salad.  He really liked it which was evident when he finished everything on his plate.
At the waiter's recommendation, we ordered the apple strudel but we took it to go since we had no room in our bellies. Â He gave us the baking directions for it - 350 for 10 minutes. Â It was just okay. Â I think it would've tasted better if they had prepared it.
We will definitely be back. Â I still want to try their beer and come during the weekend to check out their live music.
This poor rating is for the service, not the food, we didn't get to eat.
Went here for our anniversary, thought it would be fun with music and all. Â We were seated outside the kitchen and watched the service people walk by. Â We could not get them to stop and after 20 minutes, no water, no order, nothing. Â Another table flagged down their server and pointed at us - so I guess we weren't quiet or invisible.
About another 5 minutes pass and we get up to leave. Â The owner (manager?) walks up to us as we are putting on our coats and asks if there was something he could get us and I just said it was too late, and we left, and we haven't been back. Â I highly doubt we will.
Bavarian Grill is another strip mall gem we discovered several years ago when we moved up here from Austin, where you are near some pretty awesome German food in Fredericksburg and Gruene. Normally on the weekends I avoid going out of The Circle (635 to the north, 30 to the south), but, as usual, we had a coupon. And a hankering for some schnitzel. And this place pretty much blew our minds. We come here a few times a year now, would probably come more if the prices were a bit a lower!
Absolutely ENORMOUS serving of Jager schnitzel, which is fried to perfection and just dripping in mushroom sauce all over the spatzle. The fillet typically hangs over the plate. BG has wonderful potato salad, and those salt rolls in the bread basket were created just for salt-toothes like me. I also LOVE the Rinder rouladen. Now, the mixed salad is a Central European version of a salad, so don't expect spring greens. You're going to get pickled sliced beets, cucumbers and carrots. But we're just crazy about it and actually usually order an extra if both entrees don't come with it!
Visited for the first time Saturday night and really enjoyed ourselves and the food. It seemed the servers were a bit overloaded (part of why it's not 5 stars) but our waitress Lida was very personable and gave us outstanding guidance since we weren't familiar with their beer list or menu. I got a Dunkel, the Hacker-Pschorr, and it was a real treat. Their mixed vegetable salad was delicious (carrots, cucumber, green beans, beets and tomatoes). For entrees we had the schnitzel with mushroom sauce. It was a huge portion and we both enjoyed it a lot. Our other entree was from the seasonal menu and had a name I won't even begin to reproduce. It consisted of 2 skewers with pork, mushroom and onion with a slightly spicy sauce. Like the schnitzel we really enjoyed it. Oh, and the french fries are outstanding here :)
The other reason I deducted a star was due the tables being too close together and the decor needing a bit of a refresh. But four stars it is and we will definitely go back.
I'm German... as in a German-passport having, green card carrying foreigner. Â Grew up in Germany with my American stepdad, and didn't come to the States until I was 22. Â
I'm Swabian, but lived in Bavaria for most of my life. Â Everywhere I've been in the U.S., I've hunted down German restaurants. Â This is THE best place. Â There's some big German restaurant in Fort Worth and it is disgusting, Bavarian Grill is the closest you will get to German food in the U.S., in my opinion. Â
I don't remember seeing a lot of mushroom dishes on the menu. Â But, I'm not very adventurous with my food, I go for sauerbraten. Â You can pull up the menu on their website and check it out, before deciding to go.
I always get the sauerbraten with spätzle (instead of dumplings).  Extra red cabbage.  It's the first time I've had red cabbage that tastes just like it did in Germany.  The goulasch tastes 100% like my mom's goulasch.  Unfortunately, I've always hated goulasch.  But, my kids can't get enough of it.  The schnitzel and everything is very good, according to other people.  I'm not a big meat person.  I'm all about carbs when I come here.
Love the rolls, I steal all the little laugenbrötchen (pretzel rolls).  The cakes are good, though I'm not sure if the Black Forest cake has cherry liquor in it, I can't remember. Â
When I used to live in Austin, we would come here with my Oma (grandmother) when she flew in from Germany once a year. Â She liked it. Â It was the only time we were in the area, so I'm really glad I live so close now! Â
There's a TON of beer, but I'm a bad German who doesn't like beer:o, so I can't help anyone there. Â
I love the atmosphere of this place, very German. Â Train rolling around and all. Â
Never had a problem with service, although my husband is taken aback by the female owner who has been our server 3 times. Â I think she's funny, he isn't used to people other than me being blunt.
Reading through other reviews: Â We've never been seated with or near strangers, but in Germany they will seat you at a table with strangers, which can be awkward, lol.
Eins, Zwei, Drei!! I can't believe I have lived here for 20 years and never eaten here before! This place is so much fun! I love the authentic decor of the place, even the waitresses look like real German beer girls ( not the guy fantasy type, sorry guys). Here are your instructions on what to do at the Bavarian Grill:
1. Order the wurst platter ( comes with potato salad and loads of yummy sauerkraut), jager schnitzel, vegetable salad, and potato pancakes.
2. Say it's your bday ( even if it isn't) and let the waitresses and live band sing happy birthday to you all while ringing German bells to the tune of "Happy Birthday".
3. Dance to said German oompah music and appreciate the accordion.
4. Visit the Beer Garden, yell and scream with the bartender, and drink your way through every German beer on the menu to get your own Beer Stein.
5. Move all the tables and take silly pictures in front of the scenic painted walls and then try to convince your friends you really were in the Alps last night and you have the pictures to prove it!
A weird location in Plano, but it feels like stepping into little piece of Germany for a night.
The only way I can describe the Bavarian Grill (or BG has I fondly refer to it) is a little piece of Germany in the middle of Plano, Texas. It's an authentic German Restaurant and Bar. Â The food and beer are great. Â
Some of my favorite aspects:
Andrea (the bartender)- she is the typical German beer frau. Â When I first started going to the Bavarian Grill she scared me so much I wouldnt' talk to her. Â Now I love chatting with her. Â I used to live in Plano so we went all the time, but now that I've moved it's a little harder to make it out. Â There was almost a year's span of time between one of my visits, and she still remembered us and treated us like old friends. Â She may have busted our chops a little about taking so long to come back, but that's why I like her so much. Â She's real and honest.
The Stein Club/The Beer- They sell over 40 beers, and if you drink one of each you become a member of the Stein Club. Â You get a free stein and one free beer. Â I've finished one card and am currently on my second. Â Don't expect to find Miller Lite here. Â They only sell German beer.
Polka Music- It may sound corny, but those polka players can seriously play. Â One night the guy played Bohemia Rhapsody...and played it well.
The Food- It's German and it's delicious.
I'm a mid-20 something and would much rather spend my night at the BG than any other bar. Â If you're in the area check it out; you wont' be disappointed!
PROST!
Ich liebe deutsche Bier, and The Bavarian Grill has loads of it. In fact, they only serve German beer, so don't sound like a Nancy Boy and try to order a Bud Light. Even if you do this, your server will kindly recommend a German beer for you that is similar to the one you requested.
They have a beer card at the table on which you can keep track of all the beers you drink during your visits to the Bavarian Grill. When you drink all of them, you get a stein with your name on it and a prestigious membership to the "Stein Club". So far, my card has 4 beers checked off.
They have live traditional music, a train that runs on a ledge just under the ceiling, and waitresses dressed in German style frocks. The atmosphere is quite jovial, and stepping into this restaurant definitely makes you feel like you are at one big German hoe-down.
The food is great. I've been there twice and got the sausage plate both times. The large plate is big enough for you to split and totals at $16.95, in the event that you don't think you can handle all that food or spending a lot.
Auf Wiedersehen und lange leben lederhosein.
