Let me preface by saying, I have a very rare eating disorder. If i see gyros on the menu, I am compelled to order them, even if I'm in a BBQ joint locally renowned for their ribs and brisket. Never fails! I'm a self-professed gyro connoisseur. I also love brisket, but alas, i will have to save that for my second trip.

So, the gyros were very different, but in a new and interesting way. They clearly did not come right off a spit, but were instead individually grilled? I'm not sure how they were prepped, or where they came from, but they were all so uniform that I think they may have come from an outside food company.  I'd love an owner response to figure this out! I enjoyed them anyway; they were much less greasy than at other places.

The sweet potato fries were awesome! It was also nice that there wasn't an upcharge for choosing them. There is a charge if you want a regular sweet potato substitution. My kid date had the burger, which comes with waffle fries. Also great.

The space inside is limited. They do a lot of carryout and delivery business also. I think they only will deliver if you live in Highland Park ($4 charge)

This was totally different than going to Real Urban bbq, which is likely their big competitor in the area. RUB is more casual...more rushed...like the Chipotle of the bbq world (not a dis) where you have far fewer options, and it's all mass prepped so they get your food out quickly.

They serve alcohol here, and it's a much nicer place to sit and relax. You have table service and white linens, and the noise is a very tolerable level. It's a really nice atmosphere, likely due in part to the owner Gus, who, as it's been mentioned, is a super nice and friendly guy. The server and hostess I saw were also very smiley and sweet.

I really don't think the prices here are really higher than Real Urban's. The portions are totally different, so it's tricky. Let's compare the kid's burger, at $7, with milk (or juice) and fries included. This was a regular sized burger, which may equal two mini sandwiches from Rub, at $3 each, plus another side of fries at $3 (or was it $2?). Using the more conservative $2, BBQ Pit still comes out cheaper at $1 less before even calculating the juice. That's just one example, and it's not very scientific. I'll need a food scale to do better than that.

Gyros sandwich plate was $10. It included coleslaw and your choice of regular or sweet potato fries. I was satisfied with the price, though I used a $4 off coupon, and my total somehow came out to $18 even? That's very fishy. I know what the local tax rate is, and I shouldn't have paid more than $15. Hmmm........didn't get to see the before and after bill...........hmmmm...............

Will return for brisket, then an update.

we've been 20 visits a year customers for maybe 15 years and it's always the same consistent excellent stuff-except for the pictures they change on the walls.

the ribs are full and the bbq sauces are great and not something they dumped out of a vat they got from a food supply company.

the fries are also really good and original tasting. the sweet potatoe fries taste like it, and the waffle fries are thick and delicious.

there's really nothing I don't like. They've changed the size of the restaurant a few times over the years and some of the food they sometimes try new things, but it's the gold standard on the north shore. Usually with bbq places you end up dissapointed. There's not as much food as you thought you were getting, it tastes like something you get at a grocery store, you get the idea. BBQ pit is the opposite and that's why it's been a go to place for us for so long. For family meals they have some deal for $55 which is usually more than enough for 4 grown adults. I also like the size of the burger which is a real burger, not a mcdonalds sized burger.

The bread sticks they thrown in are better than most fancy restaurants and you can just tell in what they do that they care about the food they're making and the product they are selling you.

If you're on the north shore, this is what you want and I've tried most of the competition. Also look out for the chocolate cake, it's rare you see deerfields beaten at cake, but this does it.

Parking's usually pretty easy and at night most of the parking is at the west end of the lot where the stores which have closed for the day are located.

My single dinner at BBQ Pit:

+ Two of the delicious garlic breadsticks served before we even ordered
+ Half an appetizer order of solid onion rings
    + A tasty if over-cheesed Greek salad
    + A half-slab of near-perfect baby back ribs
+ Five large, plump, perfectly grilled shrimp
+ Half of a pile of awesome waffle-cut fries--with skins!
+ Several forkfuls of my wife's shoestring sweet potato fries
+ A bottomless glass of Diet Coke to wash it all down
+ Several hours of stomach discomfort, simply from overstuffing myself

But this is the kind of place at which to splurge.  I'm glad that they have a ribs/shrimp combo because I was very interested in both.  $22.99 for the combo gets you a LOT of grub.

Everything was really good, except for the sauce served on the side.  It was too sweet and tasted like a bottled sauce, even though I know that they make their own.  The sauce on the ribs tasted different; maybe they're the same but the cooking alters the sauce in combination with the meat?  Who knows.  Anyway, sauce is pretty important at a barbecue joint, but overall everything was so good that it didn't bother me.  All I really used it for was to dip my fries and shrimp anyway.  And frankly, both were good enough to eat unadorned so I used very little sauce.

We brought home half the onion rings and half the waffle fries.  I can't even imagine how I would have felt if I had finished everything.

Not quite sure what these other reviewers ate here, but I don't agree. The service was not great, the wait for food was longer than it should have been, and when it finally came we were very disappointed.  The brisket salad was reminiscent of dog food to be honest. The bbq sauce was the only thing that saved the ribs, the meat itself was not qaulity.  The beer selection wasn't bad...but that is not going to bring me back.

Found this place by accident.  Just looking for some lunch starving after an appointment.  It was about 1:30pm so only the server was in the restaurant.  The server was slow.  I think he was tired from the lunch rush but, we were starving and in a hurry to eat and wished he could have picked up the pace.  His customer services was excellent.  We ordered 2 kids burgers, brisket sandwich and pulled pork sandwich.  The burgers looked great with fresh waffle fries but, did not get a taste.  All food was in very large portions.  I should have just split a sandwich meal.  Pulled pork was okay but, nothing special.  Brisket was "to die for."  I must say I had never tried brisket before so I do not know how it should taste but, this was very tender and sweet.  I absolutely loved it.  This place is very expensive.  2 kids meals and 2 sandwich platters at lunch cost $42.44 plus tip.

this is a small family owned place, but the food is good!
they give you bread which comes straight out of the warmer! delicious!
I got beef brisket with fries and coleslaw. YUMMY! I'm a big fan of smoque so im picky with my brisket, although this brisket isnt the same as smoque, it is one of the better briskets i've had. My bf got the pulled pork and it was tasty! he ate it all up before i could ask for another taste! the fries were nice and crispy and the portions are generous! next time i think i may try the gyros =]]

We were heading to a get together in Highland park the other day. We hadn't eaten because there was supposed to be great food waiting for us...well we get a text just before we get there..."Food is gone"

Scramble time. Unfamiliar with the area we drive around looking for something quick and easy...So I stumbled upon the BBQ pit. We ordered a couple of burgers cooked medium rare, The skirt steak sammich medium rare, and a Brisket sammich. All came with cole slaw and waffle fries. Burgers were huge and tasted phenomenal. I think the skirt steak might have been the biggest...most perfectly cooked skirt steak I've ever eaten. With the amount of food we got the Brisket sammich turned out to be a nice lunch.

all in all I paid $40 which isn't too bad considering the amount of food we got. The hostess was really nice, and we got our food to go in 15 min.

It's close to the train stop too, so I can pop off and grab some when i head down to the city.

Was really excited to try this joint. We are BBQ people and travel all over seeking great BBQ. This place does not even come close. BBQ Beef ribs were inedible, tough & fatty with a limited amount of beef on them.
Dry rub baby back ribs were a bit tough, dry with a tasteless rub on them.
Sweet potato fries were good, but that was it. YUCK!

Came with some friends and family.  It is a small place, so you sort of have to look for it, but when you order your food, you will be glad that you found it! We got the ribs, Greek salad, sweet potato fries, and cheeseburgers along with some beers, and EVERYONE was happy.  The barbecue sauce was so p my alley that we took home a few bottles (they sell it on-site).  I think that this place is the best place to go and relax with some good old-fashioned baby back ribs.  We got lucky the night we went, and there was live music that made it even more enjoyable!

Surprise, surprise, surprise.  Who would have thought there would be such a good BBQ place in downtown Highland park?  This place is top notch.  I never venture beyond Michael's, but last night i went the extra block.  Boy was i pleased.  So pleased i devoured the whole slab of ribs.  I fee it today, but who cares when they are that good.

$15.99 gets you a full slab of ribs, with a massive sweet potato on the side and coleslaw.  But what makes this place good obviously are the ribs.  The ribs were really tasty and the sauce they lathered them with was excellent.  I sampled the regular baby backs and the honey coated baby backs as well.  Both were delish.

I did not taste anything else, so i am only giving it 4 stars until i taste the chicken and some of the other items.  Coleslaw was average.  If you are in the area, give it a try.  I don't think you will be disappointed.

Wayyyyyyy overpriced.  Then they had the nerve to charge me .25 for extra BBQ sauce.  Ribs were OK but not worth the $40 it cost me to feed just two people...and we still didnt get enough sause....Two thumbs down

I grew up going to the barbecue pit. I've been to both locations and recently  I went to the new and improved updated barbecue pit. The owner is friendly and always stops by your table to say hello. Food is consistently good...there's just nothing special about it to me. Since the renovation, the decor is more bland, but they have added a bar, and I like to drink, so that's cool. Overall, it's a Highland Park institution...people who eat ribs (not me) dig it. The turkey burger is allright, kind of small, but my parents love it. Also, the breadsticks are heaven...80,000 calories...but heaven nonetheless. It's good food, reasonable prices, but nothing special.

Love love love this place!!! Where do I even start!! The half bbq chicken, bbq chicken breast, rack of ribs, greek salad, pulled pork, spinach pie....EVERYTHING is just amazing. Can be a bit pricey to some, but well worth it!!! Their sauce is great, and I am soo happy I can now bring it home with me (as well as their salad dressing).

Great food, really hits the spot! Don't know of any other bbq place in all of chicago that compares!!

I LOVE the BBQ PIT!  The Bobby Q beef sandwich is so delicious and the Tennessee honey ribs are one of my favorites.  They offer two different sauces, mild and spicy.  I prefer the mild, but so many friends LOVE the spicy sauce there.   I think Alan should try the spicy next time, since u found the sauce bland.   YUM!  Oh, and the sweet potato fries dipped in their bbq sauce, is melt in your mouth delicious!!!!!

2/2/10 Update.  They changed their sweet potato fries and took the sugar off of them. A healthier version, but I loved the original version better.

Also, the owner Gus is super sweet and loves his customers and  will always take care of you!

BBQ and Mexican are my two favorite cuisines, so my standard for BBQ is pretty high.  My wife ordered the dry rub ribs (the Sally special) and I had BBQ beef.  The beef was a bit too soupy and although the ribs were good, they were a bit too bland for my taste. Their homemade BBQ sauce needed a bit more spark to it.  Something to make your taste buds stand up and take notice.  Not necessarily more spicy, just something that makes me say wow!  The Greek salad is advertised a a specialty of the house, but was nothing more than Lettuce, tomatoes, yellow peppers, feta cheese and kalamata olives.  Mostly just lettuce, and feta.  The dressing was very good.  Everything was good, but not great.
