I've been a few times since they changed ownership and now allow kids, once at the bar and once with a friend - we both brought our kids for lunch. Â Service is OK, the ambiance hasn't changed much it is still old world FL and a bit adult. Â A tad on the kitschy side. Â They pour great drinks and on Sunday they have a bloody mary bar. Â Food is decently priced and the menu offers items to please all types. Â It is worth checking out. Â They have patio seating, a small indoor area, a great bar and usually have live music. Â Enjoy!
Review Source:My trip to Beak's was a mixed review. I absolutely love the fun Florida atmosphere. The walls and shelves are covered with every knick-knack and painting one can imagine(gotta love that shell art!) The staff was very friendly. We did wander around a bit; we were uncertain if we seated ourselves (eventually we did.) We saw the leftovers of a pretty extensive Bloody Mary bar that I will have to try soon. The appetizers are varied and reasonably priced. The Sweet Corn Nuggets were delicious. The dipping sauce was supposed to be "Jalapeno Ranch"; I am fairly certain it was just Ranch as there was no kick at all. I tried the Caprese Grilled cheese (Yummo!) and the Sirloin Burger with pimento spread (good burger!) Â Our main dishes were tasty but sadly cold. It was like they were cooked perfectly, then left to sit for a while before being served. The only other issue we had actually related to Yelp. The check-in special offers a "buy one get one free drink" deal. They would not honor this as they are now called "Beak's St. Pete" and the restaurant listed on Yelp is "Beaks Old Florida." I think this place has some great possibilities. It is definitely on my list for happy hour.
Review Source:As my friend Jeff says, "The interior is what the inside of Jimmy Buffet's head must look like". Â
Chef Donnie is incredible!!!
Her BLT is to die for...with huge, gorgeous strips of bacon on thick slabs of bread as is the burger...we get it with pimento cheese and fried egg. Â The artichoke starter is really kind of elegant in a down home kind of way.
Dessert...pretzel crusted brownies with sea salt caramel topping and funnel fries with cinnamon cream will set you free. Â
Prices were all about $10-$12 for each entree.
Oh, late night eateries! How I adore you! And how I wish your kitchens stayed open later than 11 pm!
Went with a large group one night after a show in St. Pete. Service was good, the truffle fries and the pretzel stick--delicious! People beware: the horseradish  mustard sauce that comes with the pretzel stick is very spicy!
I really, really want to love Beaks. The chef is responsible for one of my favorite foods ever: Â the short rib sandwich at Three Birds. I dream of that thing, for realsies.
I went here for a burger the other day (I've been on a burger quest. So cliche, I know)  to celebrate the end of my semester.  .  The space is cool and the waitstaff are on their game.  I was so disappointed in my burger. It's the worst burger I have had in a minute. I got the pimento cheese burger. The bun was sub-par.  The ratio of pimento cheese (which I adore) to meat was way off.  Ike, it was 75% cheese, 1% meat.  The burger itself was a disaster.  It was super-thin (like fast-food  thin) and it wasn't seasoned at all. Because it was so thin, it couldn't be cooked to order. I love my burgers rare. There was no way this thin pattie could have been cooked rare.  It didn't fit on the bun. This, in combination with the over-cheesing situation, made it nearly impossible to eat.  It was so thin and poorly cooked, it had an indentation in the middle and the edges curled up.  I have never, ever been in a position to complain about condiments. I mean, what could be wrong? You slice up that shit and throw it on the burger.  The fresh onions on this burger were chopped, not rings.  The kitchen couldn't even get it together to slice some damn onions for their burger? They had to put on 5h3 diced onion they use for cooking?  This is another factor that made eating this thing impossible. Â
The fries are also subpar. I was in love with Chef Dominica's truffle fries at 3 Birds. Â The upcharge is completely acceptable bc, well, truffles. Â At Beaks, the fries are frozen. Â On the real? I am paying $$ for frozen fries?. Â These Ore-Rida (how do I spell that? I am clearly thinking of Flo Rida) joints aren't even a proper medium for a potentially bomb-ass fry situation. Â
Keep in mind this is a $12-ish burger. Â I love fancy burgers. I have no problem of paying a million dollars for a burger if it's worth it. This burger is not in any way worth $12-ish. Maybe if I got it in my extra value meal it would be cool, bc at least the fries would be acceptable (can we meditate on the fact that I would prefer MacDonald's fries to the fries served here? That is jacked up). Â
I honestly don't understand how the chef could send out a burger that looked like this.  I mean, they  have eyes and are food professionals. They should be able to tell this is a sub-par burger. Â
You want a good burger? I highly recommend the burgers at The Berg. Cooked well, flavored well and the fries are hand cut.
Went here at the suggestion of a friend. I'm always eager to try new places especially if they are locally owned and operated. Â Service was brisk though we were here at 6 p.m. and their were only a couple of other diners. Â Limited menu which sometimes I really like because that means the food should be very good. Â I ordered the Tomato and Avocado Salad with Chicken. Â That was it literally. More like a side salad but with a $7.95 price tag. Â Tasty mind you but not worth the money. Â I also ordered a side dish of Sweet Potato Fries and these were yummy. Fried but not to oily or salty. Â I might try this place again, but it would not be my first suggestion.
Review Source:This was our first visit to Beaks in several years and the first since a new chef hit the grill. Â Hopes ran high, unfortunately delivery was a bit below expectations.
First some comments on the food. Â Our appetizers of mussels and fried artichokes delivered the goods. Â Well seasoned, nicely done. Â A side salad was rather pedestrian, but not objectionable. Â The entrees of upside down chicken pot pie and pork tenderloin needed a bit of work. Â The chicken pot pie was well prepared but served a bit cold. Â The tenderloin was served over sauerkraut, with a bit of spicey mayo on the side. Â The combination of the vinegar and the heat was a nice touch. Â The pork however, was a bit dry and slightly overcooked.
Service was the real downfall. Â The waiter was clearly not well informed as to the dishes. Â Our drink orders took a bit to long. Â The appetizers came out in fairly short order, then the entrees with 2-3 minutes of the appetizers. Â We had to send the main courses back. Â Note the previous comments re: dry tenderloin and cold pot pie. Â We also had a bit of a spill, ust water, but the staff just gave us a bunch of napkins then left, leaving us to continue eating with a pile of soggy napkins on the table.
Beaks has some potential but they need to pay attention to the details
The ambience and live music were fantastic but the food was mediocre at best. Â We pointed out a hair in the fish spread and the waitress just shrugged. Not even a discount. Â The wings were over cooked but the vegetarian pretzel sandwich was awesome! Â Was shocked at $82 bill for fish spread, wings, veggie sandwich, 2 cocktails, 3 drafts and 3 Mich Ultras. Â Would go back if they have a happy hour, but not to eat. Â Staff was very friendly.
Review Source:I'm seriously confused as to how this place continues to get good ratings. I can't possibly be the only one in the Tampa Bay area that thinks this place is way way Way overrated.
My husband and I were really excited when it first changed ownership because the "old" Beak's was overpriced, the food mediocre, and the service was poor. Well guess what? That hasn't changed. The beer menu is better (more craft beers) but you still need a server to bring it to you, and that can be a challenge. Three out of the last four times I even considered Beak's, I walked out after waiting for more than 10 minutes without a server or even an acknowledgment that we were there. That is unacceptable!
The new menu sounds delicious, wonderful, creative, and any other number of positive adjectives. Unfortunately, the food itself is really not good. My mussels with bacon were rubbery and tasteless and the bacon consisted of undercooked pieces just sitting on top; they were pretty gross actually. The chicken wings look good, but they were overcooked. My friend said his "egghole" sandwich tasted good that night, but he was regretting it in the morning.
If you must go, have a beer at the bar, but please, save yourself the trouble and find somewhere else to eat.
Stopped in here when I needed wifi and food at 2 pm, and the local cafes had closed. The insane decor (including nudes in the bathroom) raised hackles, but the beer selection was what you'd find at a good snobby bar, and the food was delicious. Each half of my pastrami sandwich was the size of Lebron's fist. Can't speak to the dinner choices, but it's a stellar lunch place.
Review Source:Can I give 3.5 stars?? Â No, so instead, I'm giving this 4 stars because they have new owners and they are making a great effort on this bar. Â I used to be pretty regular when it was owned by Jamie. Â I was really disappointed that they took away the "bar crack," Â aka popcorn with M&Ms and other goodies. Â It was a smart move on the previous owner's part because I would literally gobble up that first bowl of popcorn and drink my first beer so fast, that I had to order a second one to wash down the popcorn. Â
On this visit, after I was over my disappointment of the popcorn, the very friendly bartender suggested I try the truffle and parmesan cheese popcorn. Â It was really good, but I thought it was a little oily for my personal tastes. Â I don't have much to compare it to except Ciro's and I definitely though Ciro's was better.
The beer selection was OK, but not as robust as the previous owners. Â I was OK with the Cigar City selections and ordered a Florida Cracker, but I was really hoping for some new beers to try. Â I say give the new owners some time to get things in order and I will keep trying them out and update my reviews. Â It's an awesome location and I really like the enclosed patio, so they get some leeway with me!
I thought I had completed my personal review of the "New" Beaks but I guess I was bending someone's ear instead. All I can say is I'm not a brunch fan of theirs. I was disappointed by the Egghole even though the name was intriguing and the omelets where not to my taste thought the truffle oil fries might win me over one day
Review Source:After a bad first experience we came back to this place hearing it had new ownership and a new chef -- it's made a huge difference. The place still has its funky, old Florida charm, but the food is so much better. Truffle oil and parmesan popcorn, upside-down chicken pot pie, lobster-tail on a cheeseburger -- and the crispy hot funnel-cake french fries with frozen vanilla cinnamon whipped cream... what else can I say about that?! Service kind of sucked, but the ambiance, food and prices all made up for it. I'm already planning a trip for another order of that popcorn. I highly recommend anyone give this place a try.
Review Source:We hadn't been to Beak's in a while. Â When it was fairly new the food was pretty good and the funky atmosphere made up for whatever was lacking.
Has the ownership changed?  The management at Beak's seems to be on cruise control.  Now everything about the place just seems tired, from the food to the service to the décor.
The chicken tender basket and gumbo were just OK. Â The pimento burger was pretty good. Â The fish & chips were probably the best item. Â But nothing really had any kind of distinctive or stand-out flavor. Â The sangria (on special when we visited) was overly sweet.
The server was not knowledgeable about the menu. Â While the place is very casual and you wouldn't expect more than shorts and a t-shirt, the servers we saw looked like slobs.
As for the décor, the place has a lot of great, old Florida kitsch.  But everything is worn and seems kind of dirty.
If you just want to hang out with a beer and a burger, it is fine. Â I would not, however, return there as a dining destination.
This place was recommended by a friend who honestly said, " I've never had anything there that let me down! It's so eclectic!"
All true, place was eclectic..food was okay, I was not overly impressed- my thought was it was a bit pricey but I guess you pay to see the eclectic place?
I had a steak sandwich, my date had fish and chips..it is what it is! I had my typical beer and my date had her apple martini. She was quite delighted and happy with her drink.
By night end, our bill was $480.02 cents(I still have the voided receipt!) Yes, it was a fat finger mistake, true cost was $48.02. The waitress (not the dark haired one) was apologetic and the funds  cleared 3 days later.
If you like antiques, good drinks(pricey) this is your place. It's a weird/fun place..
We will go again to try another menu. Stay Tune!
So we walk in one door and it doesn't look like we're in the right place. Â So we walk in the next door and it still didn't look like we were in the right place. Â I spotted a sign pointing back to the first door and we walked back through it. Â Clearly, we looked like we felt out of place. Â No one said anything about where we were supposed to be. Â Then the lady who would be our waitress told us to pick a seat and she'd be right with us. Â She brought us a t-shirt shaped bowl or bar crack (popcorn, random mix, M&Ms, and wasabi peas.) Â Our drinks were not badly priced and were tasty. Â The menu had more choices at a higher price than expected (based on the unique decor.) Â We ordered pretty quickly, but our food came pretty slowly. Â The table next to us complained to their waiter about the amount of time it took for their food to come out. Â Their waiter explained that there was one person in the kitchen. Â I wish I had read that in a Yelp review, because we would have gone somewhere else. Â We were on a schedule. Â Both Mom's burger and mine were overcooked. Â They cheese choices were good. The bathroom was clean, but the classy lady pictures were also in the bathroom.
As for the decor, it was like an awkward cross between my grandparents' furniture and a creepy man cave. Â It was worse than I expected based on their website and what I read. Â I was expecting classy-tacky. Â I know that isn't a category of decor, but if you've seen it...you know what I mean.
I like going to go to Beaks because they have outside dining and they are dog friendly.  The decor is wonderful and so much fun.  The food is so-so.  I have never had anything there that I felt was truly something I would go out of my way to eat again.  The drinks are served in plastic cups, and expensive.  I will go back if I am with someone who wants to go there, but I won't go out of my way to if it's my call.UPDATE: went to dinner with a group last week.  The décor is updated a bit, the server was wonderful and the food is delicious! I will be returning!!!
Review Source:On a recent business trip to Florida, my girlfriend and I stopped by Beak's Old Florida on the recommendation of a couple local people. Â We were not dissapointed!! Â I travel alot for work and try to avoid the Applebee's and TGI Friday's of the world, and Yelp has never steered me wrong in trying to find local restaurants to check out. Â The vibe of the restaurant is very eclectic and truly original, not like any other restaurant I have ever been to. Â I usually sit at the bar when I eat and the service was super friendly and knowledgable about what they serve. Â I had the Old Chub beer which was a great Scottish ale with a sweetness similar to a Belgian style ale, I loved it!! Â My girlfriend and I shared the gumbo and chili to start. Â The chili had a great spicy kick to it, and the gumbo was great as well. Â For dinner I had the ribeye steak medium rare with a side of the mac and cheese. Â The steak was cooked perfectly and was simply prepared and hand cut, just like I like it... The steak wasn't over-powered by a bunch of seasonings like a lot of restaurants do, steaks are meant to be cooked with a little salt and pepper and let the flavor of the beef do the talking. Â Overall, it was a great experience and I can't wait to get back to Florida to eat at Beak's!!
Review Source:Well.... its a cool place to have a drink. The food is ok, the service friendly... the decor is over the top.... but the decor is the big draw. Thats a problem.
But: The prices are higher than they should be, and they lack any small plates of any kind. 3 fish tacos are 13 bucks (high for what was delivered) and a diet coke for 3 bucks is just stupidity.
Its a DIET COKE. Cost to business about .25. Please.
I think this is the most laid back spot in st. Pete. Â The staff is super cool and hilarious. Â They also serve a ton of beers, wine, and an insane variety of liquors. Â The best part is the food though. Â Tried and tested authentic home cooked recipes. Â I would call it borderline gourmet bar food. Â I haven't had anything that was 4 stars there and I've tried just about the whole menu, which is huge. Â Oh, and they just added tacos! Â You may read that the service is slow sometimes but I feel that is due to the fact that its a mom and pop place with a small staff and a ton of seating. Â The food is made to order and even the coorperate chains can't handle a huge dinner rush. Â Besides, this place is made to relax you, so don't be in a hurry. Â Just sit back, grab a drink, and have a wonderful night. Â I go on Tuesday because it is BOGO on all drinks with food purchase. Â Can't beat that!
Review Source:AMAZING!!!!!!!! we went to this restaurant last minute basically looking for a place that still served food so late. Wow am I happy that we went because the food was amazing and we were not disseminated at all . I split a greek salad with a friend and it was huge  I had the mojos chicken and it was amazing, The chicken was tender and juicy and melted in your mouth. The sanswich is toped with a delicious white cheese that was to die for. A friend also went with us whos a vegan and the waitress was very helpful and understanding. The drinks were a little pricy but worth it. Next thime were in Saint Petes well definatley be hittlink up Beaks Old Florida Tavern and I hope if your in the area you try it out as well. I garantee you wont be dissapointed.
Review Source:Its was our first time there last night. Food was moderately expensive. Â I think the prices would be forgivable if they came with fries, but with chips? I think paying 3 bucks for a diet coke is outrageous. Mahi mahi sandwich came on bread that was too dry. Â Decor of the place is wistful and colorful but took us FOREVER to get our bill and pay. Place needs a tuneup. MIght give it a second chance later.
Review Source:Went here today after doing errands and I liked Beaks right away. We sat 'inside' meaning the tiki-bar-like section which had fans going full on and only two other people seated nearby.
Our waiter was friendly though unknowledgeable about the white wines.
He brought out a bowl of popcorn, M&M's, wasabi nuts and tiny crackers in what could only be best described as 'some guy who had the munchies late one night's invention'. It actually was a tasty tidbit which went along with my Anchor Steam on tap.
I got the Angus Burger on a bed of potato chips. Pretty good burger in all. My friend got the Pimento cheese sandwich served on the best cracked wheat bread I've tasted, served with a cole slaw. It was pretty good too.
Not a lot of people there but the waiter said biz had been slow of late. I asked if they have a happy hour and he said on the weekdays between 4-7 it's half off every other drink. Hmmm..that's a strange twist. Wonder if they give you punch out cards to keep track of the 'every other' drink.
All in all, not a bad place and funky, cool artwork. Check out the bathrooms!!
Decent food? Yep! Plenty of drinks available? Of course. Tacky? Absolutely.
This place is awesome for the atmosphere alone. With a small inside dining area coupled with a slightly larger outside area, you owe it to yourself to take a quick walk through the whole place to make sure you haven't missed anything.
Service was friendly and welcoming and the food itself was good. There are some interesting menu items that I'd like to go back and try but everything we ordered was as good as or better than expected.
If you're in the area and looking for something fun and different, don't skip Beaks!
I have been in and out of Beak's for a couple of years now. The food has always been passable, the service - casually indifferent but competent. Tonight was a bit different.
To start things off, my bride and I walk in, she heads for the ladies room and I cozy up to the outside bar. The 'tender asks for the drink order and I give him both of our preferences. He proceeds to ask me who the second drink is for and I tell him. He then informs me that he will not pour my brides drink until he sees her in the flesh. Ok. I ask why and he tells me he can't be too careful as I might be purchasing the drink for someone who is underage. There is not a soul, underage or not, in sight. I tell him, politely, that I think this is pretty stupid but let's just move on. Bride shows up, drinks are delivered...no problem.
We then place an order for a quesadilla appetizer.
-10 minutes go by
-20 minutes go by
second drink order is taken and delivered
-30 minutes have passed & patrons who were seated after us are served full meals.
-35 minutes have passed - I ask about the order, am informed it is coming, and request a visit from the owner/manager.
-40 minutes have passed - still no owner/manager - I ask another 'tender for same
-40+ minutes have passed, the owner/manager approaches - no apology, little concern - says he will check on order.
-45 minutes have passed, order delivered, luke cool - I decline and pay for the two drinks each. We leave. Evening not a success.
At no time during any of this did anyone in this establishment express any concern, embarrassment or interest in our plight. In fact they seem a bit put off when I refused the appetizer and requested we settle up.
I know things don't always go to plan in a dining/drinking establishment but, these folks not only do not deliver they plain don't care. Save yourself the trouble and travel a few blocks east on Central where plenty of other dining and drinking options exist.
Beak's is easily one of my favorite places to eat, drink and be merry. The food is consistently delicious, the decor is cozy and eccentric and the staff is always friendly. I am fully addicted to their "Smack & Cheez" which is a spin on Macaroni and Cheese that adds bacon and french fried onions. YUM!
Review Source:there's more than one reason to hit this mostly midtown bar. Â Dale's Pale is first on the list so i can barely comment on the decor, the Karoake night (although i pass-it-over the place is slammed) or the food menu. Â you automatically get a salt snack mixed with popcorn and spicy trailmix that guarantees at least 3 rounds. Â afternoons after a teacher's servant shift is the perfect time for me and the barf-lies to go. Â if you like beer variety and ignore bailout prices you'll dig the outdoor Florida atmosphere that isn't deep into downtown hipster dives. Â older crowd never mattered to me but last Friday i found the folk classic singer working us over his charms under the influence a perfect evening on our way to Mastry's.
Review Source:Mom and Dad promised me a new treat in St. Petersburg - They brought me to Beaks. This bar and restaurant has a funny menu and an entertaining staff. My father and I had variations of a cheese steak sandwich and my mom had the chicken quesadilla.
The food was good, but the four star rating is not for food alone. The restaurant itself is... Authentic. Â The main dining room is inside, half bar, half tables. Then there is the patio which again is half bar, half dining, and then there is an outside deck, all tables. The walls are covered in... Stuff. Signs, music posters, neon lights are all part of a decor that screams old St. Pete. There is also a stage for live music.
So far I have only been to this place for lunch on the Dec 26, so my review is probationary, but I have a feeling this place is jumping on a Fri or Sat night and will update me review once I have the chance.
