Great Food, Great Service, and Great Beer all for a reasonable price.

This is a great local place in the middle of a slew of fast food and chain places.  I was extremely impressed with everything.  The place was not packed for dinner or lunch when I went back the next day but there were a fair amount of people.  The servers were extremely friendly and no more than a minute after sitting down I had three samples of their in-house beer.  I also ended up chatting with one of their cooks who was there on his day off (that typically says something about a place).

The Owner brews all their beers (about 12 handles) and they have two other handles from local breweries in the area.  Each beer has its characteristic and IBU rating on the menu and they are delicious.  Not to mention they are $3.75 a pint (I have a hard time finding a pint of Miller Lite that cheap in Chicago).

The food was terrific as well.  Almost entirely made in house by actual chefs (culinary school experience).  They offer small, medium, and large plates.

    My Dinner:
Chorizo Stuffed Peppadew Peppers with Goat Cheese
    Terriyaki Meatballs
Herb Tossed Fries with Peppadew Aioli (A Must Have)
I also had about 6 different pints of beer and loved all of them especially Scottish and Quad.  They also offer a delicious cask beer.

    My Lunch:
Corned Beef Reuben (A must have, corned beef made in house)
Truffle Oil and Parmesan Tossed Fries with Sun Dried Tomato Aioli

Can't believe it took me so long to find this place! Great food, exceptional service and cheap! First on my list when I'm back in Ind son!

I cant comment on the food or the beer......In February 2013 Our son was visitng from college and we thought we would try the Black Swan before he headed back to school. When we entered the building a sign said"seat yourself"- we did.  We watched a young man dressed in black apparently the only waiter on the floor zip from aprx 4 tables to another.  We watch a woman clean tables. 10 minutes in-NO acknowledgment of us having entered.  Waited 5 more minutes and I went up and got the menus so we could be deciding. Suddenly 4 more wait staff enter 3 head to the bar, one takes another persons order and then cleans the table behind us. again , no acknowledgement.  A simple, " Someone will be with you to take your order." or "May I bring you a drink?" 5 more minutes, we looked at each and agreed it was BEYOND time to leave.  Sad really, we are a local family and strive to give Mom and Pop resturants our business. We will not bother again.

My go-to brewery, can't live without them!

Ugh. I had high-hopes for this place. The west side is ripe for good breweries, and only has two in Plainfield. You would think with only one place to compete with, you'd have a fairly easy time being a good place. Well, not so much. I don't know who is in charge there, but it's all wrong. I can handle crappy decor, but at least you'd have good food or beer, right? No. I can handle maybe crummy food, if your beer is delicious. Nope. The beer is cloudy and weird, and several times now has made us sick. I'd skip this place, and saunter over to Three Pints any day.

I found the Black Swan Brewpub on Yelp. It was one of the few places open after 9 that wasn't fast food and it's near a few hotels. A perfect spot to stop for the night on our way to Boulder.

We got there about 9:30 and asked if the kitchen was open (they were closing at 10).  The bartender was happy to serve us. We ordered a round of beers brewed on site, a Fug Nug IPA and a wheat IPA. We got a growler of the wheat to go for short money. $12 including the bottle.

I ordered chicken schnitzel and it was really good. It came with spaetzle which was tasted great but I wasn't sure what I was eating. She sent the chef out to talk to me and he explained in full detail.

Even right before closing the Black Swan offered over the top service, really great beer and delicious food at a surprisingly reasonable price. Absolutely would go back.

Love the fries, love the beer!  Service was really stellar.  I went because I had the Reuben at Dig In and it was phenomenal.  Here, it was only ok.  Just a hint of dressing and tiny dollop of sauerkraut.  They did give me more kraut and dressing for free, but I wish it would have been served with it so that it was warm.

Skip the fried pickles.  They were too thick and the breading kept falling off.

My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful afternoon at Black Swan due to their excellent food & drinks and the amazing staff.  It was like we were having lunch at a friend's house; everyone was so warm and friendly.  The staff took time to have conversations with us regarding what type of beer/wine we like and what pairs best with the food we ordered.  The meal was so delicious! I ordered the Turkey Apple Brie sandwich, and not liking brie, the staff suggested I substitute it with fontina.  What a great choice that was! My husband ordered the brewpub burger with fontina cheese and herb fries.  He was equally impressed.  It is so nice to go to a restaurant and have it exceed your expectations.  We ended up spending several hours there just enjoying ourselves.  Can't wait until our next visit.  A special thanks to Kelly, who does a superb job!

A nice dark wood room with matching bar has a cozy feel with 8 stools at the bar. The dining area surrounds the bar. There's a small room around to the side of the hostess' stand with the mash tuns behind it, a banquette, a couple lying on their side beer barrels and some bags of brewing necessities. Joe and Lindsey were both terrific and I had a fine time shooting the breeze with a regular named George. The beers were all pretty good but I particularly liked the Ruby Ale, a nice round sweetness to it with a hint of honey, and a subtle IPA. Need to go back when I have time to sit and not be headed for four other destinations.

The best part of Black Swan is that it is right near the airport, and that's awesome. That gives me two reasons to visit: I'm leaving the airport, and I'm arriving the airport. It's a great place to stop when you're running to or back from Bloomington - you'd just never expect that it is going to be where it is.

Quick tip on the beer: it's strong. I'm not sure what the percentage is on it, but I felt it pretty quickly, so just be aware. The stouts are absolutely delicious (both the oatmeal and cream) - and I'm not a huge fan of cream stouts for some reason. However the darker the beer, the better the beer is my general motto. I haven't tried any of their lighter beers (and not being from the state, won't have a chance to anytime soon).

The food was good, and well-suited to the beer. If you're comparing it against regular pub food, it's certainly a cut above. If you're comparing it to a higher dedicated restaurant maybe it is a little short - but they aren't competing with them! It provides a good meal that above all, is a compliment to the beer.

Food menu was limited to one page, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.  Burger was decent although too greasy.  Fries dusted with the truffle and cheese offering were tasty.  Service was good.

On a subsequent visit, I was disappointed with the service.  While I understand that it's sometimes necessary to send wait staff home due to slow business, there was not only a lack of continuity, but a seeming lack of interest in any service whatsoever.  Salad cam with wrong dressing.  Fork was removed with my salad.  Check was brought to me thanking me for my patronage.  When I identified that my dinner hadn't even arrived yet, the waitress seemed nonplused.  Upon brining my steak, the waitress just dropped off my plate and walked away without bothering to ask if I needed anything else.  I had no fork at this point.  I tried to flag down another server to ask for a fork, but she seemed disinterested.  Mt waitress eventually came back to ask how my dinner was, and I said "I don't know... I have no fork to eat with".  She came back after a long while with a fork, but only after some discussion with the other waitress about what it was I wanted.  It seemed as if i was an inconvenience to them on an especially slow night.

The steak, while fairly tasty, was cut up into slices in the kitchen.  This should only be done at the table and only by the customer.  Steaks will dry up rapidly when pre-sliced.  All the juices leak out of the steak.  Besides, it gives the impression that you are not able to judge how well you've cooked the steak without cutting into it to check.

    Disappointing to say the least.

Traveling on business and thought a brewpub sounded pretty good.  Icky and dirty.  The barmaid came over and wiped off a little part of the counter right in front of her while I sat in front of a beer and crud splattered bar.  The beer tasted like it was coming from dirty lines or else they just make a crappy brew.  The food was leukwarm and gristly.

An old drunk lady staggered in and sat next to me, so close I had to move over.  When I went to the restroom, it was occupied.  I waited and some dude came out.  Whassup?!  Get in your own stinky bathroom hoosier-man!  It was probably too filthy so he decided to stink up the ladies'.

On the upside, there was what seemed like a fun group of people there playing some kind of trivia game... so they liked it I guess.

This is really meant to be a generous one and a half stars. After a good experience at the Black Swan last spring, my boyfriend and I decided to drive 30 minutes to have dinner there on date night. We arrived 30 minutes before they closed, but that really was no excuse for our sub-par food and terrible service (plus there were other people in the dining room and we were only there 10 minutes past the 10pm closing time).

First, our server, Liza, brought me the wrong beer. Then she forgot one of our appetizers- the delicious stuffed peppers. We waited for a good 5-10 minutes for so much as a glance while she wandered around the dining room cleaning tables and rearranging things.  Finally, we decided to go  to the bar to ask for ketchup. Also, she brought our entrees without bringing my boyfriend the side salad he had ordered.

The food we did order was far from impressive. The sirloin was good but the garlic mashed potatoes were flavorless and the broccoli was cold. The chicken schnitzel was more breading than meat and the homemade spaetzle was greasy. I could have made better fried chicken myself at home. The only good part about this dish was the apple/cabbage mix and the sauce on the chicken (though I barely got any).  Even after making several key mistakes, Liza offered us little more than an unconvincing apology. We were still charged an extra $0.99 for the forgotten/late salad. My incorrect beer wasn't comped.  We didn't even mention the forgotten appetizer because we were so in shock, but at least we weren't charged for them.  I tend bar and work in a restaurant, so I am usually very forgiving, but this was such a negative experience that I am still heated. I used to suggest this place to my customers who like local beer and food that's a little different than burgers and fries.  I certainly won't suggest it any longer.  If I end up ever going back to Black Swan, I hope they can make up for this disappointing trip.

The beer selection was good, and modestly priced.  I tried the IPA, cream stout, blonde, mild, and ruby red ale, which was my personal favorite that I would return to drink.

The brat sandwich was pretty average.  I tend to like sauerkraut, but not what they included here.  The BLT was not so great.  I expected better from a place I had to skip one night because of the wait for a table.

My overall impression after a first visit was to come for the drinks, not for the food.  I will give Black Swan's food another opportunity to redeem itself while I sample more of their bar selection.

I've always been surprised that this place is where it is. Just seems so random. Then again, its location allows me to hit this place on most Bloomington to Indy runs.
The first time I came here, I was not very impressed. The beer was on the poor side and the food was passable to good. However, I came back. And I come back because both of those aspects have gotten consistently better as I've continued to come back.
Black Swan deliberately changes their recipes to improve their beer, as well as add new beers to the tap list. They have a few standards, but others appear often and rotate frequently. And there a good number of beers on tap as well: usually about ten. And there's always a cider on tap, with occasional guest taps. Casks also appear sometimes, but I've only actually had one once, because they run out so quickly.
What I love about the food is that they make a concerted effort to use both local ingredients and keep everything fresh and healthy. Last time I was in, I had a salad with grilled chicken and cilantro lime dressing. Probably one of the best salads I've had in the state. The dressing just blew me away: you don't get that sort of bold flavor in the Midwest very often.
The best day/night to come is on Tuesday, when they do their $2.50 pint special. The crowd is typically friendly, mostly 30's and 40's, and mostly local to Plainfield or Avon. The bar area is relatively small, with only about ten seats. There are a couple of tables as well, but there's a large dining area behind the bar and a small patio on the other side of the brewing room. Service tends to good (at least in my experience), but they do get busy on certain nights. Especially Tuesdays.
For what you're getting - for both food and beer - the prices are very reasonable. You can get out for under $10 per person while eating something fresh, of good quality and likely locally-sourced. This place is certainly one of the better options along I-70 west of Indy, and really worth the slight detour if you're at the airport.

Great food and great beer!!  Love the brewpub burger.  Be warned--they will cut you off if they think you have had too much to drink--even if you are not driving.  Can't blame them,  better to stay on the safe side.

First time here.  Limited menu on 4th of July but good decision.  Had no idea what to order.  Our server  Laura asked what we normally liked and brought some dead on samples. Cream stout excellent.  Per her suggestion had Awesome fries!!!  Island season plus the pineapple habanero sauce is a taste sensation. The burger was charred to perfection. portobello wrap nice flavors.  All the flavors unique and custom.  Will be back!!!  Actually, we were back 3 days later!!!   Best Reuben EVER!!!!!

Great experience!! Good beer - Scottish Ale and West Coast Porter were wonderful. Fries with your choice of rub and dip are good. But the real jewel (not that you would expect it) is the Stout Cake. This is a show stopper with caramel drizzle - don't skip dessert at this stop - come hungry, enjoy the beer, and top it off with a great cake treat!!

Stopped in after landing at airport on my way to Southern Indiana. Beers were excellent. Food was fantastic. I had the reuben sandwich, wife had the beef carbonnade dish. We split salt and pepper fries with bacon aioli. All on recommendation of the waiter, and all were A+ excellent.

Beers were solid but I thought they lacked a good pilsner or a good brown ale in the flight. Maybe its just not in the flight but it seems like pub food, even excellent pub food needs a good German type pilsner or English type Brown Ale.

Service was a little slow but they are used to people getting drunk and staying a while plus its still above average compared to back home. Our waiter was very helpful, friendly, as attentive as we needed.

Classy, fun, and very enjoyable brewpub. Their beers are great, I am in love wit the Maple Oat Ale, Scottish, and Oatmeal Stout. Grab a flight and enjoy a full selection of not only their beers, but the guest taps they have as well!

Their food is better than average, but not amazing. I have had their steak, which was middle of the road, a little too fatty but tasty.

Brewpub Brat was amazing! The spices it was made with really pop out! The Beef Carbonnade  was soooooo tasty!! I would go back again and again for it!

A great establishment on Plainfield right off of I-70.

I tip my hat to the brewmaster! Slainte!

Service was mediocre, but the beer was good and we had a chance to talk to the chef about his meat and produce selections.  The higher prices are because of the quality stuff he brings in from around Indiana. I'm willing to pay for that.

I want to start out by saying that I really wanted to like this place! They have an amazing list of beers and a menu that changes seasonally. However, their beer is always on the warm side and they claim it's because of how fresh it is. I'm not even sure that makes any sense. Their service is always sooo slow and you can tell your food sits in the kitchen for a while before they bring it out to you. If you order a beer, it generally takes about ten minutes to get it.

But! the one thing I do like about this place is the seasonal menu. Also, it seems that if your food was brought out in time it would be fabulous. Their Baked Brie app is amazing... so are their homemade tater tots!

I've been to the Black Swan Brewpub about 5 times.  It's always busy/full parking lot.  Every time we go my hubby and I ask--why don't we come here more often???  The last time I had the chile rubbed steak which was one of the best steaks I've ever had.  We had a couple of mixed drinks and chocolate cake for dessert which was quite a treat with coffee and baileys.  :)  We'll be going back and back and back.  Oh they also have wonderful tasting appetizers-the peppers with chorizo and goat cheese are absolutely yummy!  Keep in mind if you want same ol' same ol' food that is served at the franchise restaurants this isn't the place for you.  This is cooked for you- from local supplies- good food.

Some good, some decent, and some great brews. There is a lot on tap, and regardless of how far you have staggered down the craft brew trail you will find something worth drinking.- Who makes a rauchbier? With this alone Black Swan won me over.

The flights are affordable and there are plenty of guest taps worth checking out.

The kitchen needs a little work, but hopefully that will come along. I had the carbonnade with fries which was incredible. My girlfriend ordered a vegetarian polenta dish.- Horrible.- Gritty, runny polenta.- Yum.- The kitchen has potential. It seems to be a matter of executing everything with greater consistency. I'm going to remain optimistic.

Our server was very friendly and helpful- despite having recommended the polenta dish. He was extremely knowledgeable about the beers on tap and seemed to have a passion for it himself.

Black Swan definitely warrants a return visit.

A Black Swan is rare and so is this place in Avon.

If you see a brewpub sitting amid 5 wineries and you want a beer, you would go in the brewpub..most likely.  I entered on an invitation to join 16 other people on an evening I should have stayed home and cried in my own beer or glass of wine.
None the less I decided  it sounded interesting...and it was.  The menu is unique.  The selection of beers were many, and based on the different tastes of those around me ALL of them were wonderful.  I had to be different and drank wine in a brewpub...not the best selection I must say.

You find everything from Bratwurst to Bison on the menu.  The food  is not something you will come back for unless it is "fries" that you crave.  They serve them up about 7 different ways.  Paper wrapped and in a beer glass to keep them hot and crispy.   By the way if you see the chopped salad on the menu and think, chopped salad sounds good..don't try this one it is not chopped, but was tasty.

The atmosphere is great, service is stellar.  Overall...everything is rated high for a place with just average food and wonderful fries.

I'd go back but on a day  I want to drink a beer and eat some fries and enjoy the company of friends and family.

We've been to this place a few times and while the food is decent, it's not on the top of the list or really anywhere near. The handful of times we've been the service was mediocre. Our servers seemed to forget about us often and even forgot some food items. The big draw for us are the frites and dipping sauces. While the frites themselves aren't the best ever, the dipping sauces are really great. We especially like the bacon one. The beer they brew is good and decently priced. The food also took a while to get out to us every time.

The atmosphere is a bit odd. It seems like they don't really know what they want it to be just yet. One wall is just large windows which really need shades because it gets too bright during the day.

If you're looking for a different place to try instead of going to a chain you may want to go here. They offer different food but it's a little more expensive than other places.

Great local brewpub I discovered courtesy of Yelp while on a brief business trip.
First and foremost, their own beer offerings were excellent. I sat at the bar, and happened to be there with a couple of locals, who were both friendly and helpful. The bartender was great, offering samples of everything. As a bonus, the Black Swan pints were $2.50. Unbeatable.
Started with a double pale ale, and it was delicious--a very full bodied and flavorful brew. Following that, I ordered an IPA, which was excellent. Quite hoppy and bold--outstanding for a young brew pub.
The menu is a quite good as well, and really displays a gastropub feel. I wasn't overly hungry, so I ordered the stuffed peppers, which were 5 petiite peppadews stuffed with chorizo and served over a goat cheese sauce.  The peppers were tangy and bit sweet, and complemented nicely by the chorizo. The goat cheese was also nice, but a bit lacking in seasoning. I also ordered the "Brewpublt". A nice BLT served on multigrain toast, featuring candied bacon and a nice aioli. The side serving of fries was outstanding--I ordered the Salt and Vinegar seasoning with the peppadew aioli.
Note: They also have a nice collection of Scotch whisky, as well as bourbon. I did not have a chance to take advantage of their Scotch/Bourbon flights, but at $15 for five 1 ounce pours, it's a great deal.
Very cool local spot. Not fancy by any means, but  the Black Swan has plenty of heart. Given the opportunity, I will return.

Kitchen sucks..  I don't understand how a brand new place is unable to get a pulled chicken sandwich w/ fries out to me within almost an hour.? My first time in and well.?  Not good.  The beer- $4.50 isn't to out of line but the wait on food is.  I never received it.  I left and had taco bell instead.  It was a sad night for them.  The stuffed peppers tasted ok, but awful small portion.  5 peppers about the size of your thumb.  I really hope they get it together.

The Black Swan Brewpub is a relatively new Indiana establishment serving craft taps and now their own beers.

When you enter the lobby is dark wood, casual but slightly upscale-feeling. The bar is ahead to the right with a family-friendly dining area farther down.  Both times my husband and I visited, we sat directly at the bar.

Black Swan has quite a few taps, "16 taps and no crap" and they mean it.  When we went Amazon Princess from People's Brewing Company was on tap, along with a few different beers from Bloomington Brewing Co, 4 of Black Swan's own beers and a Bourbon Barrel aged Ale (mmm, exceptional!)

The service was exceptional.  The bartender offered and had no problem giving us tastes of the beer to let us make our final-beer-decisions =)  A lot of places do this, but sometimes make you feel a little *too* indecisive, but this bartender was made of patience.  When he bartender stepped away from the bar to do prep for the shift end, he apologized to us and let us know each time how long he'd be gone and asked if we needed anything before he left.

The manager remembered us from last time and knew we wanted to meet DJ, the owner.  When he was finished he came over to talk with us. I tried to not go all fangirl on him and instead eat the appetizers and stay very cool, and I probably failed.  =)  I have endless admiration for anyone brewing good craft beer, and while he was very humble about his first attempts, they are very enjoyable and good beers.  I squee'd about the conversation on Facebook after he left the bar, naturally... =)

Another brewpub component has to be the food, right?  This is a mix between brewpub and gastropub food.  The appetizers we've had both times have been eyes-roll-in-the-back-of-my-head worthy.  The fried pickles have a very very crisp and light corn-meal based breading, the brewpub tots have a lovely tomatillo sauce with them and the stuffed red peppers with goat cheese and chorizo are excellent.

While I have the prices as 'a bit pricey' this is due to their food being a little more upscale.  I didn't find the price/value ratio at all off kilter.

Oh the beer? =)  Ah yes! =)  We had Black Swan's ESB, Robust Porter and Double Pale Ale.  All were very good beers - I had to end the meal with a nod to our home town peeps People's Brewing Co and their Amazon Princess.

We live in Lafayette, but will continue to travel here for their mix of gastropub/brewpub food and their beers. =)

I've been to Black Swan twice now, and also tried their beer at the festival in Broad Ripple in mid-July.

The first time my wife and I went, they still didn't have any of their beers on offer; they were still tweaking them.  We did have some food and some guest-tap beer though.

We had the "pub tots" - basically house-made tater tot-like things, with a tomatillo cream sauce;  they were insanely good.  I believe we also had the frites as well, and they were good.

We tried their beers for the first time at the beer festival in Broad Ripple.  We weren't overly impressed then - the beers were "ok" but not "wow."  Though - it was around 95-100 degrees out and ALL of the beers tasted "off."

So, last night, we went back to Black Swan.  We tried 3 of their beers - the porter, a double hopped pale ale, and an ESB.  All 3 were good - see BeerAdvocate beer reviews for details on those.

For food, we had fried pickles, chorizo-stuffed peppers, and for entrees, a steak special.

The fried pickles were awesome.  They're breaded with cornmeal and it's very crisp.  Not a hint of excess oil - proper fryer time+temp is a wonderful thing!  The stuffed peppers were awesome as well, as was the steak.

Another cool thing about the Swan is the portion sizes are not "run of the mill American sports bar" size, they're gastro-pub size, which means you can enjoy a couple of choices and NOT walk out over-stuffed.   The portions are a good value for price, but if you expect a train load of food for $5, this isn't your kind of place.

Service is over-the-top good.  The servers from our first time remembered us and that we were "beer nuts" and so they asked the brewer and owner to come chat with us for a while, which was very nice.

Black Swan will be a regular visit for us, I think.

Still not serving their own brews..but...some excellent local and regional brews on tap.

Strange set up....obviously marketing more towards families than beer drinking sports enthusiasts...as the bar area is quite small...with very small tv's...I prefer long narrow bars much like you get at 3wise...Rock Bottom....but....restaurantuers rarely seek out my sage advice !

The young lady and I shared a plate of mussels and truffle oil parmesan fries.  Mussels were large and perfectly cooked...the broth was good...however if i were cheffing...it would have a bit more ooomph in terms of heat and spicey....fries and accompanying sauce were excellent.  I thought a pretty good value..although maybe a bity stingy on fries.

The service was excellent...especially considering the charming bartender was covering the entire restaurant....

Why can't restaurants get their staffing right ???  Either they are way over staffed...ala 3wise..such that good servers quite for more money.....or way understaffed ala this place or goose island.

I try to go to a place a few times before writing a review. I've been here three times now, and I think the third time is definitely the charm.

I ordered  the evening special along with my Kentucky Ale - Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale (highly recommended if you like bourbon ales). It was a pork belly slider with a home made red cabbage slaw and a sauce made from beer. I forget the complete description as it had a lot going on. I think they were a little nervous about the dish having so much going on and even the chef stopped by to ask how it was. I like daring! It was really a great dish and I would order it again given the chance.

As I've said, I've been there three times now. The first meal was amazing, the second meal was a little less great but still tasty (perhaps just not a favorite dish), and the third time was great.  We've always had good service so no complaints there.

I'm looking forward to the day that they start making their own beer! But for now they have a great selection on the rotating taps.

This place is awesome.  I was expecting the regular pub fare, but wow, was I surprised.  My husband and I were on our cross-country journey from Ohio to Colorado and I did not want to eat any fast food on our way there.  Of course, I have a nose for food, and spotted this place somehow (not with my eyes since they are so bad).

Boy, am I glad we stopped here.  I did not have high expectations, but as soon as I saw the menu, I was blown away.  They had sweet potato gnocchi and duck breast!  Too bad I had a bag full of salt and vinegar chips before we stopped or I would have ordered it!  And the prices were amazingly low for gourmet food.  Instead I ordered a stuffed pepper appetizer and a beer sampler that I shared with my husband.  He ordered a brat that had saurkraut and caramelized onion and fresh stoneground mustard, so good.  His meal came with salad and he ordered the fruit dressing with it which was awesome, tangy and sweet.  They make all their salad dressings in house and I absolutely love it when restaurants do that.

The atmosphere of Black Swan is relaxed and there are local artist artworks hanging on the walls which give it flair.  You have to love the name after seeing the movie too, though the pub opened in 2010 and I do not know which came first...  Either, if you are on I-70, take a break and stop at the Black Swan.  It beats the heck out of all the other travel foods out there.

Black Swan Brewpub - just the name would scare a lot of  non-drinking people?  But Pubs in England are local restaurants with a bar area.  So is this. The bar is a totally separated area.   I took my mother to surprise her with German-style Chicken Schnitzel, Spaetzle, red cabbage. mushroom sauce.  Based on this one visit, we will never return.  Lunch hour, few customers, 30 minutes to get food.  Waitress was very chubby in a skintight LOW CUT black t-shirt.  And blah personality, no effort.

I was so disappointed at the presentation of the food.  For $15.95 I expected a full plate.  Spaetzle was almost a tablespoonful.  In Europe, 1/3 plate is spaetle.  Red cabbage was good.  Mushroom sauce was barely warm and added as a small side garnish of the chicken.

The chicken was schnitzel-cut but just lightly breaded and pan-fried.  No resemblance to anything German or Austrian.  Most of the crumbling breading was missing.  Turned over the chicken and also saw  scant breading along with BURNT breading.  Aha, burnt breading had been scraped off so chicken could be served!

I could not get eye of waitress.  So, I raised my arm.  For over 5 minutes  she walked all over except to us.

I assured her I knew it was not her fault, but I felt misled by the ads and menu online.   Advertising of bratwurst (even all kinds of beer), spaetzle, red cabbage, etc. led me to believe it would be authentic.  But the chicken was NOT German-style, was burnt and served with measly portion of spaetzle.  I said we felt the price was a ripoff.

She took our plates (I'd eaten the cabbage and spaetzle and two bites of chicken).  She came back with the check for our cokes.  Good bye.

I think there may be three or four enticing items on menu.  But now I am afraid.  And the prices are high for the setting in our town.

A friend who also lived in Austria (I lived there 13+ yrs) went and said my review covers it.  They'll never return.

DO NOT waste your money on this food!!!! I've never actually had the experience of throwing up in my mouth a little bit..but  I did tonight at Black Swan..we had two apps..the buffalo shrimp, and the frites. The trout and the chicken schnitzel..the shrimp should have been an indication that this meal was not going to go well..save your money and just drink the beer. AWFUL food!!!! I want my 75 bucks back.

This place has renewed my faith in suburban, America.

Hopslam on tap (along with other excellent Midwestern brews), and some really tasty food.  One of the best bison burgers I've ever had.  And the fries?  Ric Flair said it best: WOOOO!!!

You probably pulled off I-70 and weren't expecting this shit!

I would normally save a 5 star for after a couple of visits, but I was in town for the holiday, and checked out the Black Swan after a search for restaurants near the parent's house.  Having grown up in the area, I was expecting the standard tenderloin and burger fare; suffice it to say I was pleasantly surprised to find bison burgers and pretzel rolls on the menu.

And the FRIES WERE AWESOME!!  I find unnecessary pretense in calling them "frites" on a menu featuring American fare, but that didn't make them taste any less the potato side of divinity.  The options for toss and dip were unique, in my experience, and made for a flavor twist that I absolutely wasn't expecting.  I could have eaten them alone and still left satisfied, though the bratwurst was definitely the star of the show.

I look forward to visiting again, when hopefullly the dining area will be a little less austere; sitting at a metal table while I stared at comfy (full) bar booths was kind of a tease.  Also, I understand that the brewmeister for the soon-to-be-brewing house label is one of the former masters of the Lafayette Brewing Company, which will help motivate me to make that next visit happen sooner than Christmas 2011.

Not yet an actual brewery, Black Swan offers pub food and a good selection of local beers on tap.  I was pleased to see that 80% of the beer offerings were from right here in Indiana; the selection included  3 Floyds, Sun King, Brugge, New Albanian, Mad Anthony,  and People's.

The food was pretty awesome.  The selection was small, but the beef sandwich I got was phenomenal as were the frites.  I loved the dips and toss options that came with the frites.

The down fall of this place is the atmosphere.  The bar area was small and cozy, but the dining room looked like a cafeteria with metal tables and chairs and tacky flowers stuck into beer bottles.  I would definitely recommend sitting in the bar area, avoid the dining room.
