From hiking to horseback riding and everything in between, if you're outdoors-y and even if you're not, this is a great place for you! Â There are miles and miles of hiking trails, mountain biking trails, tons of sight seeing spots, and random wild turkeys frolicking about.
I enjoy climbing the stairs of the fire tower to get some of the best views of the park. Â There are also a couple reservoirs you can walk around with ease and plenty of playgrounds for children.
I've been on a couple trail rides at the stables, and the horses are very well trained and the staff is extremely friendly. Â I love visiting this park just to drive through it sometimes!
I love this Park. Â It is so beautiful w/it's rolling hills. Â That's about the extent of our elevation here in In. Â Today w/fall creeping in and the leaves coming down (we're in a woods), I'm getting a hankering for the annual fall drive down! Â My soul is screaming for a fix! Review Source:Holy cow. This is the place to go if you're evaluating your road bike and want to find out if you REALLY need a triple "for the hills". There's a category 5 hill in the park (I was out of breath from WALKing up it with my bike) and the roads around the park are relatively bike-friendly too. There are also a lot of mountain biking trails there, and of course hiking trails. If powering yourself over the trails isn't really your thing, you can ride horses there too.
We stayed in one of the "rustic" cabins recently. The rustic-ness comes mainly from the dated decor and the fact that if you want extra towels you need to get them yourself from the lodge. You have your own bath (tile and marble), a fridge, microwave, and coffeemaker, and a little front porch to hang out on. The a/c worked well and we were able to park right up the walkway from ours.
Brown County State Park is a very nice park. It's scenic enough, and there's lots of nature to take in. It isn't QUITE as awe-inspiring as some other parks I've been to...I don't think I could spend a week there...but it's a great park to visit on a day trip or weekend trip from Indy.
Probably one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Midwest US, let alone Indiana - Brown County State Park is one of those Hoosier diamonds in the rough - it is an Indiana country-boy's [girl's] rugged dreamland. Â I was first introduced to BCSP at the 2011 Brown County Breakdown mountain bike festival - what a hoot! Â (If you're a MTBer, you owe it to yourself to go.) Â The trail system is one of the best in the country - very well thought-out and quite impeccable (many thanks to <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fhmba.org&s=55c747130c8bbba229919f1bd98ca39b7d6fbe3ca96a8c4bc1221a3e0aa456c2" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://hmba.org</a>). Â I couldn't help but be awed at the countless miles of pristine natural landscape while riding through the park. Â The camping accommodations are also top-notch, great lots and facilities. Â Â I am thoroughly impressed with this park and it's upkeep.
Fall is by-far my favorite season here (the leaves in early October are breathtaking at Hesitation Point), but there is activity at BCSP for all seasons. Â It's very affordable ($5 to drive in/$2 to bike in) and it's close to the quaint town of Nashville, IN.
Indiana: you have at least 16,000 (or so) acres of natural salvation left. Â Brown County is where I go (mentally) when I'm stuck in that five-o'clock Kessler Blvd traffic.
First of all, have you heard of Nashville, IN? What an oasis of magic in southern Indiana. It's like a tiny tinsel town located in the middle of nowhere. It was beautiful.
Brown County State Park was an idea that was thrown at me by a friend when they invited me to go hiking with them. I had never been there before, but I love hiking and was more than willing to be a part of this adventure. It is relatively easy to get too (less than 1.5 hours from Broad Ripple) and on the Sunday that we went it was only $5 for a car full of us to get in, which was great. There are many, many trails to hike on and smaller attractions scattered around the hugely overwhelming property. We hiked for hours and visited Ogle Lake and Hesitation Point and the nature center and other smaller sights. The park is clean and you can tell that they put a lot of time and effort into keeping the park nice. There is camping here and it seems like a fantastic place to bring your family. There are rolling mountainous hills and uncountable trees and foliage. There are trails strictly for hiking and there are also lots of trails dedicated to mountain biking. Something that I thought was extremely interesting is that they have horseback riding along trails if you are willing to try something new. At one of the lakes, we saw tons of trees that have been cut down by beavers and I was really excited about that prospect. You could spend days walking around this park and it would be a wonderful weekend getaway for anyone. I highly recommend coming here to get a taste of mother nature at her finest.
I've lived in the Midwest 44 of my 45 years, and of all the places I've been threw out this mostly flat land, not one place can top Brown County State Park for Fall Foliage viewing.
I've chosen this beautiful spot to have family photo's taken, held my Wedding night festivities here. And just returned to time and time again to push my reset button in the Fall.
It's not only beautiful in the Fall, in Winter with a blanket of snow it's breathtaking as well, and when the redbuds are in bloom in April, it's magic!
They have a few rental cabins that belong to the Park Inn and some housekeeping cabins that are relatively new, but will require thinking a head to get as they are few in number so they rent out quickly.
Pack a pic-nic or grab some steller grub from the Hob-knob or Muddy Boots and choose from a plethora of scenic pic-nic sites some with outdoor fireplaces, and enjoy one of the best meals you'll have all year.
I think Brown County S.P. is Indiana's largest at just short of 16,000 acres. There are not a ton of trails but there are some longer trails and they are a bit more rugged than some of the other parks.
In January it is hard to tell if the part is pretty but since there are lots of trees, I'd assume it is. There is a nice little nature center but no ranger available to ask questions of.
There are several observation towers as well as a climbable fire tower.
There are three entrances but the map indicates the Horse Camp entrance is not always open or that it does not go through the park. It is and it does. Go out that way if you are headed to the Story Inn.
We saw lots of wild turkeys which was way cool.
I like Brown County S.P. but think there are several parks that are as nice and more manageable for hiking.
What a gem in Southern Indiana. Â I came here last weekend to hike the Volksmarch and ended up doing about 12 miles. Â Lots of ups and downs and a great workout, not to mention the beauty of this park. Â The leaves are still changing and the crisp fall air made this an especially enjoyable outing.
Only 1.25 hours from my home in Broad Ripple. Â I will return here a lot to hike. Â Looking forward to doing some snowshoeing here this winter :-)
Lost my job three weeks ago.
Been trying to make myself feel better, so thought I would go motorcycle camping, that always makes me happy. Went out the garage to find that my $200 Marmot tent, it is in storage. I am not going to give up, so off to Walmart I go, say to myself I will spend up to $29 dollars (thinking no way is there going to be a $29 dollar tent). There is isle 12, a $19 tent, can't be! Even the guy at the cash register says "wow that's a great price". I proudly walk out of Walmart.
Go home, assemble the tent, wow this is okay! Except for the vent hole in the top, without a cover, I think this is perfect!
Pack the motorcycle and off I go. All highways to Brown County State Park, once I am off the highway I can feel my spirits lifting, this is going to be good. In my mind I am picturing the campgrounds north of Big Sur, on the edge of a stream, thinking about setting up my tent and bragging about only spending $19 dollars.
Ride into Brown County State Park, nice big pool, "hey this is okay". Ask for directions to the campgrounds, getting excited.
Ride into the "campgrounds", this can't be it, I don't see any tents, just row after row of RVs, three hundred and eighty rows to be exact. Thinking I must be in the wrong place, find my camping spot a small plot of land twenty feet by forty feet with thirty foot RVs on either side. I get off the motorcycle and stand there, how can I have seen hell twice in one week. This is not camping, not sure what this is, but not going to be a $19 dollar tent sandwiched between two RVs. Get back on the motorcycle and ride home.
So a $19 tent is not a $200 tent, Southern California is not Indianapolis and that vent in the top of my $19 tent wasn't going to keep out the expected two inches of rain tonight.
