I came to BWX for a friend's birthday. I was' nt too sure about what Hanover Maryland's entertainment had to offer, but Saturday night I would find out! My friend and I drove up to see a huge search light waving across the sky. They bought a table, so there was no charge to get in. He explained to me that a table with 2 bottles of alcohol was only $400, which allows 8 of your friends in for free. A far cry from what he would have paid over at The Park.
Instead of a couch they had given him a bed and a coffee table set up. This place was by no means posh, but it didn't really need to be. It all depends on what type of fun you want to have: Stuffy dressed up fun or hang loose, unedited versions of dirty south rap fun. And we chose the latter!
There was a sea of aspiring Basketball Wives in dresses, so tight that leaving anything to the imagination was just your imagination. The guys here were pretty chill, not too rough actually halfway decent. No fighting or commotion.... It was a good night! The bar is big. Mixed drinks run about $10. The bathrooms- clean.
Later on the DJ gets on the mike and yells " Anybody making $50,000 or more raise your hands in the air!!! Anybody got a passport, put em up!!" I'm thinking like what will he say next? Make some noise if you have a metro fare card with $5 on it ? Gracious... It's fun to get out on the club scene once in a while to see what you've been missing in your 30s, and to my satisfaction not much! But, Sipping a cranberry and vodka, while two-steppin' with your crew to Lil' Kim n' Biggie, and aaaall the Hip Hop that came out in your college days is always a good time! Would I come back to BWX for another cheap thrill? Certainly.
The good: the location is great and easy to get to. It's relatively close, but far away enough to discourage troublemakers, and set apart from the Inner Harbor traffic. The crowd was cool and the music was solid. I danced until my feet hurt. There are pool tables, a basketball hoop game, and a few places to sit when/if you get tired.
The bad: This club's website would lead you to believe that it's upscale (grown and sexy) and implies that there is a dress code. However, when I went (on NYE), the dress code didn't apply to everyone. The website said NYE attire, no flats, no Uggs, no European casuals. But, I saw all these things, so it's not clear that the door attendants are aware of the dress code.
The ugly: The ladies room is a bit untidy and smelly. And, the bartender that I encountered had a major attitude. She overpoured for certain patrons while underpouring for others.
Word to the wise: When you go, park on the side closest to the gas station. Otherwise, you'll have to maneuver through a muddy mess to get from your car to the club- this applies to every night, not just nights where the weather is nice and dry. Â
I'm not sure that I would call this a lounge. When I think lounge, I think of places like Red Maple that have clearly separated spaces for dancing (high noise level), lounging (moderate noise level) and eating (intimate, quite noise level). I am sure, however, that I will not be visiting BWX Lounge again.
I'm being generous, only because this place has potential. The music is good, location isn't bad, at least they have a parking lot. There doesn't seem to be much of a dress code, I came on a Friday, most people were dressed up, but a few guys had on sneakers.
The drinks SUCK, I'll be stopping by the wine store before I enter. The clientele is nice and well behaved, they just need a lil more of a crowd. When I walked in I saw couples, Birthday parties sectioned off to themselves, and only a few general population. This place turns up it 's general pop numbers, and it will do just fine.
