If you love cake and coffee drinks, you'll love Cafe Intermezzo. There's never a shortage of a selection of cakes. Out of about 10-15 visits here, the service has always been very friendly but slooooooow. It's the cakes, coffee drinks, and fruit sorbets that keep me coming back. The ambiance is good for a date night or to catch up with friends. The late night hours are also a plus.
Review Source:Was expecting the clouds to part and angels to come down and dance in my mouth as I ate dessert based on the reviews here. Â Wasn't super impressed, but maybe my expectations were too high. Â Husband and I got the Bailey's cheescake. Â Tasted like plain cheesecake to me. Â With chocolate on top. Â That was disappointing. Â And at almost $9 for a single (not very big) slice, I was expecting to at least think it was great, if not excellent. It was even a little melty, which was weird because it really wasn't hot out when we went, we sat inside, and the cheesecake was in a cooler before.
The ambiance is very nice. Â I think I'd like to be taken here on a first date for drinks and dessert if I was single. Â But for the most part I'd rather head to Cheesecake Factory for some seriously awesome cheesecake. Â Unless they show up on ScoutMob again, we probably won't be back.
I don't understand how they can't have a higher rating!!!
The decor reminds you of a cafe you would see in Europe. Very sexy decor and lighting. (The owner is from Europe I believe)
The customer service is EXCELLENT! I usually sit at the bar and all of the bartenders have amazing attitudes andd customer service skills.
My favorite thing to get is the Chicken Duxelle Crepe in sun-dried tomato batter - a m a z i n g  !
They have a huge variety of beverages - every kind of tea, coffee, cocktail, wine and alcohol.
The dessert case has just about the same variety as the beverages.
The ONLY reason they aren't getting a 5 star rating from me is because the bathrooms always seem to have paper towels all over the floor. Other than that it is a great restaurant for VERY reasonable prices.
Just moved to the area and thought we'd walk to Cafe Intermezzo for an Al fresco breakfast. Â The place looked really great from the outsider much like a cafe you'd stop at on vacation. Â The menu looked great. Â The Latte was pretty good, the waitress, although hard to find was friendly. Â I had a craving for Eggs Benedict ever since I saw them featured on an episode of MasterChef, so I ordered them. Â The eggs were not done enough...when the egg white is still see through, it's not done enough. Â The potatoes it came with were cold and not really grilled....It's like they were left overs. Â The hollandaise sauce was disgusting. Â The presentation of the Eggs Benedict was also poorly done. Â It looked as though it had been sitting for several hours. Â I asked the waitress if she could bring me some more hollandaise sauce and she happily complied. Â It was a little tub of hollandaise incomplete with skin.
My husband eggs were to his liking, but the sausage had so much pepper (and he's a pepper fan) it ruined the taste. Â His potatoes were part of the same batch of leftovers. Â
We may walk up for a latte and walk back, but we won't be going back for anything to eat.
Now, I got a chance to grade you guys.
I went to this place with my girl friend to meet some friends. me and 5 of my friends ordered coffees and cheesecakes. My gurl friend was hungry and she wanted to have a cup of tomato soup.  Server told her to order another soup or order salad, and server said tomato soup might not be as fresh as the other flavor soup. My girlfriend ordered anyway. She got her tomato soup that wasn't suggested by the server and finished eating it. 10 mins later we had to leave the place because she didn't feel very well. When we arrived home, she got worst. l left her and went to pharmacy in the middle of the night to get some stuff to make her stomach  better. when I came back home , she was in the restroom on the floor with a pain.I ve called my doctor friend to get help. My friend said it was the vegetable (tomato soup) .
This location is not doing great  anymore since they have franchised this location and have changed the crew. Now, they can suffer with the way they do business.
Hello Mr. Olson,
I am going to celebrate my bday with a few girlfriends at the Dunwoody location tomorrow. I am a really worried about the service's bad reviews. I hope you are reading the reviews posted online, about that specific location, so you could make sure that the patrons will be taken better care. The two locations that I have been to, are very lovely places, with excellent food/ gourmet coffee/drinks, but I am concerned with all the bad reviews. I have thought about going somewhere else, but again, I will give it a shot, with the hopes  that after tomorrow, I will be putting up a great review...so from past experience, I will give it 5 stars today.
Will be back here tomorrow...
One of my most favorite hang out spots in Dunwoody.
Huge cocktail selection.
Their desserts are to die for.
The service is slow, so don't come in here and expect to be about in 45 minutes.
But it is a hang out coffee/dessert place. They are open late which is an added bonus.
They are a decent wine selection, but I suggest ordering their alcoholic coffee drinks.
The perfect example of 'not really a European cafe but trying awfully hard.' You are offered a 50 page long Beverage book (menu). I had the frutti de bosca "fruit of the forest' expecting a tart, but it was a cake lacking flavor. Very blah. I was expecting something closer to the frutti di bosca tart I've had in Europe - made with lemon juice, vanilla, egg yolks, or often a lemon custard base. Disappointing. It was confusing what the general theme was - Italian, French, Austrian - nah..just a hodge-podge. I am giving 3 stars because it is huge, has lots of parking spaces, and you can relax and read. Service was inconsistent and aloof.
Review Source:Wish I could give no stars. My friend and I decided to grab a late bite to eat after a girls night out. They weren't horribly busy, but our server took forever to get us water and then even longer to come around to take our orders. They tried to charge my friend extra because she wanted arugula instead of mixed greens on her salad even though both options are essentially the same price at the store. Then, not even the manager could answer whether or not the Caesar dressing was gluten free (I'm gluten intolerant), because he didn't really know what gluten was. It is scary that a restaurant that is attempting to get into the gluten free market with a gluten free apple some type of dessert does not take the time to educate their management or staff on gluten. It kinda makes me wonder about their kitchen practices and how they avoid cross contamination. They were also out of their gluten free dessert. My friend and I ended up leaving without ordering. For such a reputation as one of the better late night dining choices in the area, one would think they would be better educated regarding allergens and that they would have a better stock of desserts.
Review Source:What happened to this formerly nice place? Returned after a couple of years to find food fair but overpriced and customers allowing kids to scream, run around place and disrupt everything. Â The staff just lets the insane parents and kids run free. Â They should rename this Chucky Cheese
Review Source:The meal was fantastic and my server Joshua was awesome. The gluten free cheesecake was absolutely delicious! I like the Ashford Dunwoody location much better than Midtown. The staff, minus bartender, was a bit rude and unfriendly when I visited the Midtown location. The vibe here is peaceful.
Review Source:This restaurant has a lot of unrealized potential!! The deserts were delicious... That's the good. Now the Bad... the tables were not clean, neither was the dinner ware. Â Here's the Ugly... the service was the worst! Â I asked to have my table cleaned four times and the waitress claimed - after all the attempts - that she was not told. Â The waitress brought the wrong order twice, and got the bill wrong. Â I finally realized, same action, same results. Â So, I called for the Manager and at least got my to-go box. Â The service received was a real downer and I don't think I'll ever go to this place again. Â After all, hospitality is the point or desired point! Clean up your act Cafe Intermezzo, or leave it to the real professionals!
Review Source:My wife and I visit this location quite often to get some good desserts and some kind of romantic atmosphere. The service is very slow on busy nights especially when the coffee they make is made by one or two people so don't expect to get your drink in five minutes. The people at the cakes are very knowledgeable and patient. Thumbs up to them.....servers are slow because baristas are slammed. We waited on a server for over 30min and when we complained we got our desserts for free :)...so if you don't like something make sure you speak to a manager
Review Source:This restaurant has some sentimental value. But I'll just leave it at that. Â Let me start off by saying that service is pretty lackluster at this restaurant...however...the ambience at night time makes up for everything. Â This is the perfect late night date spot. Â On our last visit we enjoyed several coffee liqueur specialties, the caprese panini, the Mediterranean pasta, and a alive of cheesecake. Â This restaurant is truly for the atmosphere Nd the uniqueness that is the drink menu. Â I don't think I'd ever come here with a group of friends...this is strictly a date spot. Â Maybe in the daytime that changes things....but then...where's the fun in that :)
Review Source:Been here a handful of times now. I'm not over the top about Cafe Intermezzo, but it's not a bad place to go if you want to eat outside and have a couple drinks.
They have a fantastic drink menu, ranging from hot chocolates to after dinner drinks, which serves as a highlight along with the dessert selection.
Dessert isn't a menu, it's a display case with cheesecakes on one side, and cakes, pies, etc on the other. A staff member explains what each one is and makes recommendations. You get a large slice of whatever you choose. Last time I had the key lime pie, before that the oreo cheesecake. Both were delicious. If they stuck to drinks and dessert, they would be killing it.
The food menu isn't overly large - it's a mix of sandwiches and pastas, with breakfast served all day. Probably a menu more appropriate to lunch than dinner, but it's decent enough. Had the Parisian sandwich last time, which was good without being memorable.
Service is extremely slow - never gotten out of here in under 2 hours. Just moves at a different pace. Which wouldn't be too bad, except he seating is not awesome. It's crammed, and the tables/chairs are not what you would call comfortable, especially if you're going to be in them for a long time (see: service).
Overall, if you're sticking to dessert or drinks, you're going to do well. If you're looking to eat, there are probably better options.
I was so excited to try Cafe Intermezzo, so I brought my Grandmother here after picking her up from the airport for what I hoped would be a good breakfast. Nice area. Easily accessible. Free parking. Terrible service and terrible food. The restaurant was not clean. Â The chair I sat in had something sticky on it, and it was replaced, but I didn't see the man wipe off the dirty one. Â The mirrors weren't clean, and when I went to the restroom, there was a old drink glass from the night before. Â
I had eggs benedict and there was nothing remotely fresh about any of it. Â A cheap, cold English emuffin. A thin slice of sandwich meat ham layered on top. Old poached egg on top, with some packaged hollandaise on top. Potatoes were decent. Granny had sweet potato pancakes and added eggs and sausage. Â Pancakes had a weird aftertaste-- my sweet potato pancakes taste better. Â I was impressed with the drink menu, and it's likely that there are other things on the menu that are not so bad, but I won't be back to find out. Â
Dirty. Bad food. Poor service. Â No thanks.
I would have to agree with everyone else's reviews that the service is terrible. And by terrible I mean terrible. I am a regular at intermezzo, but I am very specific in how i come. I always ask for a table near the wall because these teeny tiny tables are packed so close together people are elbow to elbow. I am always ready to order as soon as the server comes by for the first time: an Egyptian Chamomile tea (very good, most definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a non alcoholic hot beverage) and either the strawberry nutella crepe, mango sorbet, or red velvet cake depending on my mood. When the server is dropping off our drinks, I ask for the check and try to pay cash, that way I'm not stuck in the awkward limbo at the end where the conversation with the person you came with has ended and you're both sitting there awkwardly continually repeating "where is our server? is it that guy? no...wait." The drink list is extremely extensive, almost to the point it hurts them more than it helps them. They have a glass case displaying the cakes/desserts and a nearby server will give you a guided cake tour which is nice. I would definitely not recommend the food here. I have gotten a sandwich or salad a few times and each time it was overpriced, under portioned, and not good. The last time I grabbed a bite here, I got food poisoning and since then have opted to never eat the food. So what's the reason I keep coming back? The atmosphere is really nice. All the tables have white tablecloths and glass tops. Small vases with pink carnations and a candle atop every table. The lighting is very dim, almost romantic. It is a good place to just sit and talk with a friend for a while. So while I'll probably continue to visit here and stick to my cup of tea and safe dessert, I would recommend people stray from ordering food here or expecting too much out of their server.
-A
Delicious Deserts! A perfect place for a late night coffee and desert. On a beautiful day you can sit outside and enjoy the weather.
Amongst other things the crostini was delicious. But what i will always remember them for is their strawberry cake. It's the BEST. So delicious and flavorful. Highly recommend it!
I've been going to this place for about 12 years now... They've changed quite a bit with staffs and of course their expansion. I'm glad that they've expanded, otherwise the wait for a table is just torturing, especially when it's freezing outside.
I always look forward to visiting the dessert area because they're always filled with interesting new flavors of cakes and cheesecakes. My most recent visit consisted of a Creme Brulee Cheesecake, it was just divine. Their bosgo has never changed, it's always been there since day one. I just love their selection of cakes, although I wished that they baked their own...
My favorite drink during the summer time here is the Swiss Chocolate over ice with a few shots of raspberry liquor. It's refreshing! Otherwise, my coffee would have to be Cafe Intermezzo. Maybe it's just my love for almonds has gotten me so addicted.
They have such a huge selection of coffee, exotic teas, soft drinks, and of course any of your coffee could possibly be on the rocks. :)
If you want to learn French, Vietnamese, Spanish etc... go to the bathroom and sit there for an hour... It talks to you with all these languages. What's really neat yet highly un-sanitized is the tassel you pull to flush the toilet. Yes, it's a pretty neat idea, but oh so grossed. I don't want to pull on this after I've used the restroom... knowing that others have done the same. I wish I could speak to the system and let it flush for me. Ha!
It's a great date place, social gatherings or just a table for one.
What happened, Intermezzo? I've been coming here since the late 90s, and now you go and break my heart. Â 3 because of our history, 1 for last visit, average=2
Good things first-
-tons of parking even if you have to walk just a little bit
- huge selection of coffee, tea, wine, beer, etc. Â Even absinthe is on the menu. Their drink menu is really thick, and you could spend hours as train at it
- lots of cheesecakes and deserts, although my understanding is that none of it is made there
- they serve meals
- good for lots of people
- nice atmosphere
Things that make me sad: Â
- Â Food is mediocre and expensive for what it is.
- Â Service has really gone south. Â I mean past Florida, south.. Occasionally, I've had the slacker waiter or waitress here, but none bad as this one guy. Â The last time I was here, I came with a group of 7. Â We wanted to hang out and get some dessert after dinner. Â We all ordered a hot chocolate type thing. Â Our first warning should have been when the waiter took 15 minutes to come to our table and another 15 to go find a match for the candle. Â He took our orders after knitting a sweater in the back or whatever he was doing. Â The Mexican hot chocolate I wanted was not available, so he suggested I get the white hot chocolate. Â Wrong recommendation for someone who ordered a dark chocolate drink. Â He was gone for about another 40 minutes, and we were finally able to find him and flag him down. Â When we asked about our drinks, and he stated that the barista was really busy and then went away. Â We waited a little bit more and we had to ask the manager about our drinks. Â He checked for us, and all our drinks came out within the minute. Â Now, I've had lukewarm drinks here, but every single one of our drinks was ice cold. Â The guy never apologized for the delay and about lying to us. Â He just walked away. Â What on earth? Â By this time, we were there 1.5 hours, so we opted to leave. Â The manger offered to make us new drinks but this was after we started to leave, and he also never apologized for the incident. I also noticed that all of this waiter's tables were still waiting for their food or drinks. Â I honestly thought that he really hated his job or something really bad happened to him that day. Â I would brush this off and not write about it if it were not for the manager's indifference to what happened.
If I'm in this area again and need a place to chill with friends, I think I would opt for Taco Mac or maybe even Cheesecake.
I'm still not sure if I would return to this Intermezzo again. Â If I do, I'll just get something that requires no prep.
Four stars mostly because the desserts are awesome! Not because of the food I've had there in particular. Â They have a large assortment of cakes, etc that are always nice and moist. The large drink selection is also spot on- hot and cold alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages.
On to the food...I'd give then four stars for the soups I've had, the butternut soup is amazing and inspired me to make my own at home, and the lentil bean is good.
On the other food, I'd stick to the pasta dishes. I had the mango chicken wrap once: it had too much liquid and sweetness and I didn't taste the curry mayo or cayenne that was supposedly in it. Stay away from the blue cheese coleslaw!
This place has yummy cakes but horrible horrible service. It took them abt 20 minutes to get me my cake, which just needs to be plated btw, and it was the wrong cake. Then since it was so cold outside, we moved inside and the server took forever to get our table a glass of water. This place needs to up its game on its service. And the worst of it all, as if it could get any worse, the wine glass they gave us had lipstick on it; our server was too busy chatting so we had to flag another server down to get us another dirty glass. Extremely disappointed in the service and I really used to love coming here for dessert + coffee.
Review Source:Either the coffee quality has gotten so bad here or I just happened to come on an off night... a very off night. The coffee tasted so watered down and so bland. I've always ordered the Spanish Mocha and it's never tasted this horrible before.
The desserts were good still. We ordered Nutella eclair-like cake, mango passion fruit mousse cake, and Boston cream cheese cake.
Service was very slow as usual with an addition of a rude server this time. He never came to check up on us so we kept on having to look for him every time we needed something. When he finally gave us out bill, he just slapped it on the table and walked away.
This used to be a good place to meet up with friends after dinner for desserts and coffee but lately it hasn't been so great unfortunately.
After many years, this place is still one of my favorite places to go for coffee and dessert whether it's with a group of friends or post-dinner dessert date. Sometimes it does get crowded but what I like is that they're open late. Definitely a plus when you still want to hang out with your friends.
Admittedly, cups of coffee are a bit pricey and the drink menu is astonishingly long. I'd like to stay there and try every single coffee/espresso they've got, but I might end up awake for weeks. On a Saturday night, after witnessing the not-so-heavenly bodies at the Clermont Lounge, I ordered a Toasted Almond Mocha. The aroma was heavy and everyone commented that they could smell my drink once placed in front of me. This was definitely a mocha as I found so much chocolate at the bottom even after I stirred frequently.
I just wasn't feeling it for dessert since my coffee was sweet enough. Otherwise, I definitely recommend getting at least a dessert at this place. What's great about this place is that despite how late it gets, you can still order foods like soup or crostini if you want something savory besides the sweets in their display case.
People definitely come here for the atmosphere. It's romantic with the candlelights and dark space, but it can also get loud on the patio. You'll find a mix of groups or couples there in the evenings.
Once again, I'm stuck between a 3 and a 4. I really wish we could put .5's!
This place always keeps me coming back with their fantastic coffee menu and delicious oreo cheesecake.
Service is always slow. Out of the 7 or 8 times I've been there, my server went missing nearly every single time. Service is very slow and rather unfriendly, but if you're with good company and really enjoy coffee and dessert, this place is still worth a visit.
Lunch/Dinner choices are about average, with Panera/Cafe quality and neither WOW nor disappoint. My favorite are their Panini's!
Now...where this place really shines!! Their cappuccino/coffee menu is much larger than their regular lunch/dinner menu. It offers something for everyone. I highly recommend the cappuccino with nutella in it. I forget the name, starts with a B...but it's their most popular one, so the server will surely know which one you're talking about. You can also take a "dessert tour" while they are making your cappuccino. An attendant tells you about all the wonderful desserts they have to offer. Their cakes are okay, but their cheesecakes are phenomenal! Especially the oreo cheesecake, yum!
Parking could be hard to find on some busy nights, but it's free, and you eventually find parking within 5-10 minutes. This is a great place to catch up with an old friend, or be "out-late" without going anywhere crazy.
I've been here a handful of times, always for drinks/desserts. Â Service has always been good and the desserts/drinks are always delicious!
This place gets crazy busy on the weekends so expect to wait for a table. The last time I went here was this past Monday with my husband. We came there around 9ish and it was busy, but not as busy as I've seen it the past few times I went there. The past few times I went were on the weekends though.
We got the exotic bomba and a banana nutella crepe. The exotic bomba is OMG so good! It's a mixture of mango, passion fruit and raspberry sorbets encased in white chocolate. I could eat that stuff everyday! The crepe was just as delicious! It was just as good as crepes that I had in Paris. I had the biscotti martini and that too was super yummy! It tasted exactly like a biscotti but with a kick! I wish this place was a little closer to home, I'd definitely frequent it more often.
None of my trips to Atlanta is ever complete without a trip to this restaurant. Â It is both intimate and open. Comforting and comfortable with food that is delicious and decadent.
My favorite treat is the goat cheese medallions, these are lightly breaded and served in a red pepper sauce that is just to die for. Their coffees & teas are always right on the mark. Though sometimes the service is slow and cumbersome.
I live practically down the street, so it's hard not to stop by. We use to meet up here rather it's a first date or just meeting up with friends. Â They close late so we never have to worry about them kicking us out. Â Sometimes, we'll start off with the spinach artichoke cheese dip. Â I normally order a light entree like their chicken panini or turkey croissant stuffed with cheese and cucumbers. Â Both, comes with one mini side dish. Â
FYI, <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2FHalfoffdepot.com&s=2c5d68431b20012b968c9db450f1645cef90da57cd0d7ada77bbcf50b4095a7f" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://Halfoffdepot.com</a> tend to have great voucher deals for this place.
I just like to come here to sit, chit chat, and enjoy some overpriced coffee and cake. I've never come for food, and service has always been subpar, but it's a nice late night place to go when you don't want to do the loud scene.
Great in the summer when you can sit outside. cake selection is huge and they have the best tiramusu.
This is THE seal the deal date Dessert spot, but it's also great for hanging out after dinner with friends when you dont want the chatting to end just yet, perfect for coffee and cakes with the ladies midweek and probably a billion other scenarios when you want  to tickle that sweet tooth.
The drink menu is extensive, pages and pages of mixed drinks, teas, coffees, herbal and fruit infusions, steamed milk, juice if it come sin a glass or a cup they probably do it. The cakes and cheesecakes and pies are all on display at the front and it;s better to check them out yourself because they rotate and change so there's usually something new to try or a twist on your favourite flavours.
The regular savoury food is kind of meh, but when the drinks and desserts are this good i really don't care
1. Its about .2 miles from my house
2. Cake? Yes please!
This place was live the other day...I was walking by and had to stop in. I love the ambiance. Makes you feel very mellow while you have your delicious coffee drink with a side of cake. Sat outside...sipped on my coffee....I never even do this kinda sh** but it just felt right! Yup...just decided...I'm going back tomorrow.
Oh..plus the speaker system in the bathroom with the German lessons? Nice touch Intermezzo...very nice. Me limey.
Cafe Intermezzo... I actually dread going to this place (at any location) because their cakes are always stale, service is usually bad (whether it's busy or not), and nothing they serve satisfies my taste buds. Aside from last night I haven't been to this location in ten years or more. It hasn't changed much except the wait was longer and a lot more painful (again, 105 degree day... probably close to 90 when we were outside waiting). Those people that sat on the patio must have really wanted their coffee.
The service was just okay. We ordered a coffee beverage and talked for a long time. It was almost closing time and our waiter just vanished. Which wasn't the biggest deal because we were having a good time but dude, check up on us. Give us the head nod... something.
The ladies room... was as gross as one of the scariest, grossest gas station bathrooms I had to use on the way back from Portland. The kind that's on the side and to the rear of the gas station. The one where you need a key to enter and you think of that scene of "Candyman" and hope no one murders you in there before you walk in. You also don't touch anything (I've become an expert use your foot for everything person) and hold your breath like you're on Fear Factor. I had to choose between disgusting stall #1 with no toilet paper (unless you count the wads that were overflowing out of the commode) and disgusting stall #2 that had the spare toilet paper holder thing a million miles away from the gross commode again with wadded up toilet paper all up in it. I felt like I was in some twisted "fancy" porta potty situation.
I know it's busy but that's NO excuse. You know people are drinking and they're going to have to use the facilities. Wipe the counters, restock the toilet paper, and pretend to clean a bit. Not even really clean but frat house clean. You feel me? I mean you are trying to be fancy pants coffee and it's really not even good so at least don't gross me out with the restroom. That and they abruptly lit up the place at the end of the night. Not cool when my eyes were enjoying the dimly lit situation for hours... Sometimes I feel this place is only popular because the restaurants in that same strip mall don't serve coffee. Coincidence?
This was literally the best place for first dates and fun hang outs a year or two back. It's either my tastes has changed or the clientele is changing not for my liking.
The place focuses around the idea of a european coffee shop consisting of mainly coffee and dessert (cakes and pies) although they do serve teas, alcoholic drinks, and regular food. I've never personally had their food considering this place is more of a dessert/wide down spot so I'm more of the dessert and coffee person.
Tables are relatively small, mainly 2-4 persons but if you have a larger group, they can accommodate by pushing tablets together but it might not be in the best locations in terms of traffic flow and lighting.
What I do recommend is the berry-berry tea (I love tea), tiramisu, or cafe johannes. Many items on the menu are reasonably priced, but do be prepared to spend a little extra if getting anything a bit out of the ordinary. While cake slices are a good portion, it is pricey. Just an FYI if you're first trying this place out and you're on a budget.
What I don't like about it anymore is the service is pretty slow, maybe it's the people in the back or maybe they just want me to leave that much quicker. Whatever the reason may be, it takes a good while between getting your drink and being able to get their attention again to order a second drink or even a refill of water.
The environment is so loud now, it seems like everyone has just forgotten to speak in a relatively normal voice and has resorted to shouting. It used to be a place where you could sit down and have a good conversation between two people but now it's so loud that you're resorted to just speaking very loudly which I think destroy's the mood whether it be a hang out or first date.
I think this place is getting very popular which is why more different clientele is coming in, but I tend to skip this place now for quality drinks and hang outs but rather a last minute idea or a place just to be seen.
The first time I went to Cafe Intermezzo was on my birthday 10 years ago. So I guess this is my 10-year Intermezzo anniversary. Awww.
I've been back dozens of times since then. I even went on my first date with my boyfriend at Intermezzo (it really is a great place for a first date!). The place keeps luring me back in because it really has the nicest, most European cafe style I've seen in Atlanta. And did I mention it's a fabulous place for a date?
BUT. The decor is where the similarities to a nice European cafe end. No wait, the prices are also similarly high and the service is really slow. Scratch that. What's the main difference? No cafe in Europe with any pride would ever serve the sad, weak coffees this place makes. I mean, the drink menu is like 30 pages long! You'd think there would be SOME coffee drink that tastes right? Nope. I've tried 7 or 8 different lattes/cappuccinos to no avail. I don't get it. The espresso tastes fine. Why dilute it until your so-called coffee tastes like lukewarm milk? I hate to use the S-word, but... Starbucks makes better drinks for a lot cheaper. There, I said it.
While I'm at it, I may as well bring up the cakes. I'd say 3 out of 4 times I've had dessert at Intermezzo, it's been delicious and decadent (especially the cheesecake - yum!). But that 1/4 of the time, the cakes have been dry and tasteless. That's pretty rough when you're paying $7 a slice. My advice is to stick with the pies and cheesecake if you're worried about crunching on stale chocolate cake.
So here's my reasoning: 1 star for the cheesecake, 1 star for ambiance and 1 star for staying open late. Minus 2 stars for the drinks.
Let's be honest, a big reason most people dislike this place is because they hate themselves for behaving like pretentious Euro-trash wannabes. We all know damn good and well sometimes a cup of Folgers and a Little Debbie can't cut the mustard, so we decide to let our high brow flag fly, fight the bullshit traffic and overpay for coffee & cake. Life is grand!
I can't decide if my main beef with Cafe Intermezzo is the paying for "ambiance" rather than food & drink or that the ambiance can't mask the fact that the service blows ass. They're open long hours probably because it takes an average of 5 hours to get a cup of coffee and a pastry. I realize this place isn't a Dunkin' Donuts, and you're supposed to utilize your time here like it's your own private piazza, well, in my private piazza, I like to eat, drink and make merry with my kinsmen in less than an hour and half. (I'm probably a jerk and a non-romantic, but I gots things to do!)
They do have an extensive selection of coffee and dessert, but it's not worth the hassle of playing demolition derby around that pain in the ass mall and then waiting 11 hours for a cup of joe whilst you sit among the elite euro-trash wannabes. I'd rather get my coffee, my danish, my perfect-o panini  and my wi-fi on at Panera Bread, where hat shit runs like clockwork. I'm not saying, I'm just saying.
Café Intermezzo is quite a unique eatery in Atlanta. Three locations, one in Brookwood,  Downtown and one in Dunwoody. I best describe it as where to go when you don't want a meal but a little sumpin sumpin. Mid afternoon coffee and monte cristo,  meet for a drink that isn't alcoholic and Starbucks is too generic, late night snack or European quality dessert and brandy.
It is decidedly European complete with the borderline consistently inconsistent service.  Don't expect to have a luxurious amount of room Americans are so accustomed to.  Small café sized table (remember you're not eating a multi course meal here so you don't need the square footage) and at peak times very loud.
Delicious cappuccino, any alcoholic delight you could want (honorable mention are end of night type ports and brandies) and mineral waters.
Sweet and savory crepes - they really are what works in those in between moments, Â paninis, full breakfasts, salads and impressive listing of entrees. Â I don't mind a cheese plate late night and they have it.
Keep Intermezzo in mind for those after hours mood when you don't want to go home but don't want to waste hours of your life on soulless nightlife.
