I don't really understand why this place is not always packed. Part cafe, part bar, part nightclub, part restaurant. Â This place has everything, and makes it work. I felt like I was back studying abroad in Europe for so many reasons. For any Europeans in the Chicagoland area missing home, this is the place to go. The portions were American-sized, the prices very reasonable, and the drinks perfected. My finance and I LOVE this place.
Review Source:I used to come to Mistico few years ago when it just opened and it was the only lounge European type of cafe with crowd, lotsa drinks options, etc.. Me and many of my friends used to really like it.
However, the last few times it has been a real dissapointment. Owners became cheap and somewhat rude. My best friend ordered a salad and it was a half of the portion it usede to be. When she asked for some more vegetables, the main manager kept arguing with her and refused to do anything about it.
When I went there for lunch and asked to substitute chicken on a salad with octapus, I was charged for a full salad with chicken ($9) PLUS a whole entire octopus appetizer (another $9). So in that chicken salad which didnt even have any totatoes but basically lettuce, onion, pepper and cheese, with octopus on top I paid $18... When I complained the owner offered to take a $1 off... as if in that very poor chopped salad chicken was only $1... the other $8 were obviously the onions, peppers and lettuce...
Just disspointing to see how service and food quality level has degraded... And obviously the new "customer retention" attitude is coming from management themselves.
I go here often, this place has all around excellent food, get that steak sandwich with Greek potatoes, wash it down with a hacker pschorr and you will Love your life. Â The waitresses are very nice . Â Oh yea and that flaming cheese is a mouth watering appetizer. Â Order all of these things, do what i say and you will be a well nourished happy fat lard like me....except you will struggle to breath and have a stealth gut...
Review Source:This place has very good food for being a European bar, very dark inside..... I think they want to either mellow people out or cut down the ComEd bill. On Mondays they have free pool and a http://restaurant.com coupon that is generally published. For drinks, it's mostly imports on Tap, no Domestic lights (which I normally drink). My Grey Goose Soda with Lime was watered down after drinking 4 of them and a glass of Cabernet, then driving home afterwards perfectly sober.
Review Source:My friend and I were looking for a place where one could get some decent grub, booze it up, and lounge in an outdoor patio to bask in the sunshine's glow. Cafe Mistiko was the spot we chose due to proximity and it having all the elements that we were looking for.
When we walked in we were presented with a very dark dining room. Granted it was noon and most of the customers were sitting outside, it was still a bit dreary to walk into and didn't exude any hospitality.
My friend and i were both surprised that the menu was as extensive as it was and that most of the meals were under $10. I ordered a bloody mary and blackened tuna caesar wrap with a side of fries. My friend ordered a corona and chocolate banana crepes. The tuna wrap was sadly underwhelming. The menu promised blackened yellow fin tuna cooked medium rare, and when my wraps arrived, i noted that they were more medium well to well. It also lacked any hint of that lovely bright red color which made me question the freshness of the fish. The tuna looked kinda of opaque and more questionable than anything. The fries were well seasoned and crisp. My bloody mary was good but i should have ordered it spicy because the mix was a bit bland. My friend's crepes, presentation wise, looked stellar. The crepes were also very delicious, i mean how can one mess up anything with chocolate and bananas? On the down side, the crepe itself was hard in some areas and looked more like a large tortilla rather than something that was freshly made from a batter. This was disappointing.
The decor itself is very trendy, and this place attracts many eastern european patrons, so don't be alarmed by the err.."exuberance" of the clientele.... (hey, i'm russian, so yeah i said it mwaha). The bar is pretty extensive in terms of liquor variety and there are also several pool tables.
There are food and drink specials everyday and the staff WANT YOU TO KNOW BECAUSE THEY ADVERTISE THEM EVERYWHERE EVEN THE WOMEN'S BATHROOM SO YOU CANNOT ESCAPE. (picture provided)
Our waitress was a nice lady. Â Ever so often my friend and I would have to flag her down for drink refills, but it wasn't bothersome and she was very quick with bringing back beverages.
Yeah, i'd chill here again.
I had an international group of 20+ and went to Mistiko on Monday night. Our guests had a great time; great selection of international beers and interesting foods to try. Â A lot more memorable than an evening in a cookie cutter sports bar. The service was outstanding despite the fact there appeared to only be one waitress working at that time. We'll be back.
Review Source:I have come here quite a few times and enjoyed it for the most part. The food was always good, the drinks were great, and the portions were normal to large. The last time I was there I ordered a Souvlake Pita Wrap with French Fries. It tasted amazing and the portion was quite large. Everything was great until we reached the end of the night when our waitress seemed to rush us out of there. She continued to check-in on us and clear off the plates quickly.
I say yes to the food but the service can do better.
I absolutely love Mistiko! They always have great music and their food is delicious! My personal favorites are their popcorn shrimp, chicken pesto panini, chicken kabobs & caesar salad! Â I love how they make their own Caesar dressing! But pretty much anything they have is amazing food & drink wise. The staff is always friendly and the owners are always around which makes it easy to get to know them. Yes, it may attract a more "euro" crowd but for lunch and non-weekend nights... you can avoid that. It's a very good place to just hang out either on a date or with a bunch of friends. When it's warmer they even have outdoor seating! :)
Review Source:One of my ULTIMATE FAV local bar in Deerfield. Chill atmosphere, tasty food, great seasonal beers on tap, and pool tables. What more can a girl ask for? And the inside is actually so much nicer and feel-good to be in, than the parking lot that it is located in.
Corporate Event or out with a friend - LOVE this place.
This place is horrible! You first walk in and you are in total darkness, you'd need to get a flashlight out to read the menu.
But first you are greeted, or I should write not greeted, by some unfriendly worker. I've been here twice, I don't know why I gave it a second try but I gave them the benefit of the doubt.
When we sat down the waitress was nice until we just ordered water, I'm not a drinker and I like water, but apparently the waitress doesn't like it when you order water and she then had a bad mood the rest of the time we were there. We ordered food, we had to wait a long time for our food even though there were only 2 other tables occupied in the place. The food was gross, very very bland & dry. The waitress never checked on us and we waited 30 min for a bill staring at our plates that they never picked up or our empty water glasses as they never gave us more water. When the place is dead it shouldn't take this long to eat here, i spent 2 hours of my life wasted here in the dark.
So I guess people just come here to drink (according the the reviews), that's fine...just don't advertise you have food! It's gross and it wasted my time and money being there. Maybe they could be a little more friendly or just warn the customer when they come in that the place is only for drinking and smoking outside.
Be warned...don't come here to eat!!
I liked it, the food is decent, and cheaper them most places around. I do agree with other posts about the decor, they need to spruce this place up a bit. The music is a little too loud and the lights are a little too dimmed, but over all its not a bad place to hang out and have a bite to eat and have a smoothie.
Review Source:I enjoyed the grilled salmon .However, they changed their menu a few months ago where they use to have the capri salmon ....
The bartender was courteous and friendly . Food and service excellent.
Plenty of parking unlike the city... Drawbacks are those snobby russian jews who talk loud and want to create some scene.
The only Mystical thing about this place is how it has four stars on Yelp. Â In just two visits I've already wasted an hour of my life waiting around in this place -so I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this review. Â I should probably add that waiting for a check is one of my pet peeves.
From the reviews here I think perhaps they have vastly different people in the kitchen at lunchtime and at dinnertime.
After my first visit, I was fully prepared to let my second Groupon expire and eat the $10.00 cost, just so that I didn't have to go back. On the first visit we experienced frighteningly poor service as described by other reviewers here - no smiles and slow service, poor food, the burger was the most overcooked meteorite I've ever been served - seriously - a half inch of melted cheese couldn't save it. On top of all that, we waited at least 20 minutes for the check, and NOBODY was there.
On the inevitable second visit, things started out well and I was actually encouraged as we sat down. We were greeted by 2 (two) smiling people immediately upon entering, one of whom could have been an owner - amazing! Our order was taken promptly and things were looking up. There were small groups at a couple other tables talking in russian.
I think I detected a flash of disappointment across the server's face as we ordered plain old water, and things went down from there. After our meal came the server seemed to remember that we had ordered an appetizer, and went back to place that order with the kitchen. I wasn't sure what was on my pasta as I couldn't SEE it, and I'm not joking (other people have noted the dim/lack of lighting) and both the pasta and my girlfriend's sandwich were completely lacking salt - some would say an essential spice in cooking. That would be easily remedied - if any of the tables had salt shakers (no pepper either). When we finished eating, our plates were taken and we sat for literally 35 minutes, watching our flitty waitress dash around serving the other 3 (THREE) tables, before I finally had to ask for a check. 15 mind-numbing techno beat minutes later I had something to sign and could finally escape this "pirate ship lost in the arabian desert."
Maybe the eastern european crowd really is thrilled by bland food and complete neglect at dining establishments, but unfortunately for Cafe Mistiko and myself, I'm not one of them. Â With a little luck, the complete lack of business is a sign that they won't be around that long and something good will have a chance to open in their place. Â For the record, I spent more time than I intended to on this review. Â Hopefully somebody will get something out of it!
Cafe Mistiko is an unfortunate disappointment. Â Some places are just bad, but this place has such tremendous potential and is bad. Â It's a place that I wish were better, since I would love to love this place. Â I've gone a few times, walking in with high hopes, followed by consistly bad everything.
It has the exciting appearance of a unique place with exotic food and a warm atmosphere. Â Â Reality is it's a dump. Â Menu is limited, and food is between bland and discusting. Â Â I no longer eat anything here.
As far as going to watch a sports game, the TVs are small and not well placed. Â They do have one projection TV, but the picture is grainy and light. Â Â Not the place to go for a game.
Service is another consistent disappointment. Â Â The heavy-set manager or owner with the short hair is cold with no concept of customer service. Â The waitresses aren't any better. Â Service is poor, and waitresses have an attitude. Â Â Noone smiles, waitresses run up to take your drink/food order and that's it. Â Â
The crowd is an unusual mix of foreign-speaking older men who sit outside and smoke up the outdoor seating area. Â Â If you are a non-smoker, on a bad day, you choke just getting to the front door.
Place would be helped by new management and a complete overhaul. Â It's a wasteful shame, this place could be very cool.
As a Greek, I can tell you that this place reminds me somewhat of cafes in Athens. Â What I like most about the place is the diversity of the menu. Â The menu is not like restaurants in Greektown. Â I recommend the Loukaniko (greek sausage), the dip platter (greek dips) as starters. Â For the main meal, I recommend their specials of the day as well as the regular Greek salad, and salmon sandwich. Â
This place also does killer deserts. Â I recommend the crepes. Â Also, great alcohol selection, beers from different parts of the world. Â Good spot in the summer. Â Highly recommend it.
Living in BG for years now, I was influenced by an acquaintance that exclaimed "You are Russian, and you haven't been there?!!" to actually go there and check it out, Sometimes nostalgia hits home, and I have to check out a Russian place or two around my house. So, off to Mistiko hubby and I went. There some were awesome Baltika beer canopies, and I thought that you can't go wrong with a place that has Baltika canopies outside. But boy was I wrong. After walking into a dimly lit enormous space, we were seated at a table by an Eastern Euro waitress that had a facial expression of a London beefeater, which is...completely devoid of any expression. After trying to read the menu in the dark, I stumbled upon bruschetta, which I love. You can't fuck up a bruschetta, can you? yes, you can, and Mistiko managed to do just that. I wasnt sure that it was bruschetta when I bit into a hard piece of white bread with huge chunks of raw garlic on it. It looked more like those frozen garlic breads that you find at a frozen food section at a gas station than a bruschetta, and cost way more than it shoud've. Hubby got a chicken sandwich, and it was nothing to write home about. Â
The place itself could have ALOT more potential, be it not so dark in there, with terrible uncomfortable chairs at the tables, and dull bland food and waitstaff. Â The clientele was mostly barely out of diapers "mafia" wannabes from Ukraine with their barely pubescent girlfriends in UGGS and sparkly parkas, some out of place older people that attempted to play pool in the dark, and a couple of business looking middleaged men that were ogling the sparkly parka clad females. Needless to say, I am not coming back to Mistiko, even though I live a couple of blocks from there.
Menu: Â I had a panini with Caesar salad which was extremely tasty! Â Everything was cooked to perfection for everyone I went with.
We ate outside and I enjoyed that the music was not too loud out there like it can be at other restaurants. Â The place was empty except for us and 2 older gentlemen playing backgammon and we went during the main lunch time. Â The staff was fairly slow/forgetful and did not seem like they wanted to be there. Â The food style is Grecian, and I didn't really see anything there that would make it a "sports bar"
This place would have gotten 4+ stars if the wait staff was a little more attentive/gracious.
I've been going to Cafe Mistiko since it opened. Â It's a bit of an odd place.
The menu- I haven't had a horrible meal there. Â I'd put their version of a Philly beef sandwich up against any, Â The lamb chops are beyond tasty, The deli platter is awesome with a nice mix of cheeses and meats with oil and herbs and fresh bread. Â The dipping platter with 4 dips, hummus, Baba Ghanoush, tahini, and something else...served with toasted bread. The crepes are a wonderful end to any meal although the portions for the crepe are made to be shared.
The decor is perky, over sized couches and love seats for lounging and plenty of tables. Â In good weather there is outdoor seating. Â The bar is large but usually empty except for the owner and staff tend to lounge there.
I never thought of Mistiko as a "sports bar" although the tiny TV's are always on with some sporting event. Â I find it to be more of a pool-hall. Â They have several pool tables. Â If you like backgammon you can ask for a game and play as long as you like. Â
I would expect this place to be packed most weekends but it never is. Â I've gone at all times of the day and at best it's 1/4 filled, if that. Â This would be a perfect place to hang out on the weekends if they had live music. Â They have a techno sound track playing which can drive one to leave sooner than later.
As I mentioned, I bet I'm one of their longest consistent customer and they barely acknowledge that I've bee there before, although there is 1 waitress that seems to recognize me. Â I go there primarily for the modestly priced food and drink; Â I always know I'll be served quickly because it's never busy.
I would recommend Cafe Mistiko but don't expect a warm greeting or any smiles.
If you're looking for a friendly greeting from the owner or staff you'll never get it. Â But if you want moderatly priced well made food and lots of space you'll enjoy your time there.
The place seems to peg itself as being Eastern European, and tends to draw that crowd, but their menu boasts Grecian style food. They serve paninis (Yum), crepes, Grecian salads, Souvlaki, Loukaniko, Greek yogurt and more.
Nice seating, pool tables and a bar. I've had their paninis a few times and they make a mean over-priced smoothie. I've been here on a whim to meet some friends at night. It had a nice lounge-feel to it. Have yet to really see the nightlife scene yet, so I will update.
My friends and I stopped by for a few drinks on a Tuesday night. We've been here a few times and each time we go, I am not blown away by this seemingly innocent corner establishment. From outside, it looks like a fancy euro-style attraction that seems to mistify non-frequent visitors. However, once you step inside, something seems to be missing.
The inside decor looks like a pirate ship that got lost in the arabian desert. Theres big doors, bars, and red curtains that seem to try too hard to spruce up a boring interior. the furniture is simple, yet the inside is spacious. Its labeled a sports bar, but i find it difficult to watch a game on their tiny 17-inch monitors.
Aside from their lacking interior design sense, the food wasnt anything spectacular either. I ordered the Chicken pepporonita(spelling unsure) panini. Chicken was dry, ceasar salad was lacking taste, but the the bread was crispy. I had a mug of the Spaten. Beer made the meal.
In conlusion, dont come here for the food or the sports. If you want to chill with your friends on a tuesday night over beer and $4 patron shots on a tuesday night, check it out. Other than that, check out the Ram. Its literally right down the street.
