After a 40 mile bike ride on Saturday, our group was ravenous! The place to be is outside at The Tiki Bar but it is too early in the season. New chef, new and better food and really wowed everyone! Six of us and we of the dreaded "separate checks please".
Buddy, who is really a bartender, was our server. He didn't even blink - no problem with separate checks. The food was outstanding! Everything from swordfish tacos and fresh roasted tomato salsa to large steamed shrimp in a great broth to delicious chicken sandwich - this was such a great experience.
The chef even came out to greet us and ask how everything tasted. He was very engaging and interested in our comments.
We also were the table who asked for...everything from: more roasted salsa, cream for the coffee, ketchup, another spoon. Good grief, beware the cyclists!
We all tipped well because Buddy deserved it and we had a super time.
One request: the women's restroom was a bit "ripe" smelling and could benefit from a thorough cleaning or ventilation fix - something!
Look forward to the Tiki Bar and the Orange Crush drinks and a cold Corona!
I've been here twice now.. typically beacuse my company will charter a boat for a fishing trip and heck there is not really any resturants in the area. I can tell this is def a locals hang out as I get the "where the hell are you from look" as I enter! This last trip was much more enjoyable than the first... Our waitress was very attentive but seemed to be overwhelmed and only had 3 tables, confusing?!?!? Me and my coworkers all ordered the crab dip which was sub par- all cream cheese not so much crab! It was Tuesday so they had a $2 per crab deal going on so I got 3 crabs and the crab cake sandwhich with fries. The crabs were very good! the crab cake sandwhich was ehhhh ( could have skipped that one), the fries were good though! Next time I'll just get the pick your own crab deal with an orange crush! Did i mention their orange crushes are really good here!
Review Source:I was here for a Happy Hour even with some of my office mates. The weather was great and the Tiki Bar section was a blast. Right on the water with sand and palm trees. Â
The serving staff was excellent, the drinks were great. Â
I ordered a the Calypso Wrap and it was pretty tasty. Â The appetizers were also pretty good. Â It was also $1.50/crab night. Â I didn't do any crabs but all in all it's a pretty enjoyable place.
This place has gone downhill fast in the last month or so. A couple weeks ago, the crab in my crab cake had gone bad. We thought we'd try it again yesterday, but it took forever for the food to come out. When it did, they brought it without the fries, saying they didn't want the rest to get cold. My steak was undercooked, and the asparagus was barely warm, with woody stems. We had to ask about our fries, and they turned out to be the best thing there. Wished we'd just gone to KFC.
Review Source:I must preface this review by stating that I've not been back here since they got rid of their chef, Andy. So I can't honestly vouch for what is currently going on here.
However, this was always a must for my trips to Annapolis. While a little too salty, the cream of crab soup is one of the better soups in the Annapolis area. I once took a pint on the plane with me to Colorado to share with those who don't get great crab soup like this, and it was much appreciated.
Their fried oysters were good, altho obviously frozen.
I once had a stuffed steak with crab meat that was nearly to die for.
It's nice to sit outside, but my issue here is the sand. A nice touch, to be sure, but people use it as an ash tray and the local cats use it as a litter box. And the manner in which all the guests feed the cats, they'll never get rid of them.
I have enjoyed my many visits here, and will gladly avoid coming here on the cheap beer night to avoid loud obnxious drunken crowds throwing butts in the fireplace. I just hope their new chef is half as good as their last.
Andy, you'll be missed!
Calypso Bay is awesome. Â The first time I landed there was during an unannounced storm seven years ago, when my friends and I almost capsized a boat on the Chesapeake, after a couple of hours of trying to reach safe harbor we finally made it to the marina right next to CB. Â After mooring up (and coming back to reality) we spotted lights and could hear reggae music beckoning us. Â After an afternoon of fighting the elements Calypso Bay was a little piece of Tiki heaven on earth with Palm trees, delicious food and plenty of tasty beverages for all "styles." Â I've been back many times since to enjoy their famous Orange Crush vodka drink (made from fresh squeezed oranges) and live music while hanging out in the sand with Palms all around. Â
*** Oh, and definitely ask for "Lauren", at the Tiki bar, she is fantastic - always has a warm smile and is quick with the cocktails.
This place has always been overpriced by at least $5 an entree. I have come to expect that for this area. The food is so-so, nothing awful, nothing outstanding. The service has always been good. So Calypso Bay was the kind of place I would go to change up the routine.
Well no more (at least not on a Thursday night). Thursdays is dollar-a-beer night and they have hired, the apparently popular, bartender from Happy Harbor. The bar crowd was very loud. That's would be ok, except the bar and the dining room are not physically separated. Then they broke into some kind of drunken, sloppy song, and some jerk started smoking and throwing his ashes into the fireplace. Ugh.
The waitress was very understanding, and comped us one of our meals. But we will not be going back for sometime to come.
Tasty food, and our server Jean was very good about guiding us to what was more stellar on the menu. It looks like the tiki bar side of things might get a little rowdy, but the dining area appears to be a bit more comfy and civilized. Happy Barflys and Barbarians alike seemed to quite enjoy the bar, however.
Crab Imperial, coconut shrimp and the Fried Chicken salad all get thumbs-up.
