My first time here. I drive by this place a couple times a day and never stopped in. Glad I did. Date night with the misses and all. Was greeted by very friendly people and a great atmosphere. Food was great (fig jam, feta cheese, pruschito panini, with olives from Italy). Would I come here again? Without a doubt this could be a regular place to visit. Thanks Camp 4.
Review Source:Decided one day that I would rather play hooky from work and spend the day doing whatever I wanted. Camp 4 wine café seemed like a good place to start the wasted day.
Entering, I found there were no other customers inside. Two young, attractive looking blonde folks were cleaning. Asking if they were open and being told yes! and to come right in, I sat down in one of the fat, comfortable chairs that are able to spin '360s.
I was brought a glass of cold water inside of a Knorr jar. This intrigued me very much. I've stored homemade marinara sauce inside of those jars, but the thought of serving myself some fresh water from one had never occurred.
Ordering a hot turkey panino with a fantastic beer (Lost Coast: Great White--the lovely waitress recommended it), I sat all by myself in the near empty café, appreciating the enjoyable music selection playing and the road signs posted near my fat, plump seat. I literally had the place all to myself.
The food arrived. The sandwich wasn't really hot, but more warm. It appeared to have been pre-made, if not assembled already. The lukewarm feel made me think it had been popped into the microwave and re-heated. It was good; the lean turkey and porcine prosciutto were definitely a superb combination, and the fatty avocado adds a nice contrast to the pepper jack and spicy mustard condiments. There's a tomato in there, but can you have a sammy without a tomato? The grilled bread adds a tasty crunch to it all......the small spinach salad served with walnuts, feta cheese, cranberrys amidst a subtle vinaigrette was seriously tasty.
However, the real rave of the meal? The sea salted chocolate Panini, served with a serving of whip cream dusted with more chocolate and cinnamon. Had that heavenliness with the French press coffee that was literally brewed right in front of me. After chowing on all this goodness, the thought of becoming a very jolly, rotund and blubbery content fatso, the rest of my days, occurred to me, if I had daily access to more chocolate paninis  and freshly brewed French press coffee.
Eat here!
We were exploring the back country of Yosemite when Cubby Cavanaugh (aka my friend Tyler and expert guide) suggested we stop at a small camp he noticed a few years back when he and Venison Vic (his ex) explored this area a few years ago.
The camp, known as Camp4, is unassuming when you walk up to it but as soon as you walk through the threshold it's almost as if you're transported into a rustic but cleverly appointed dining hall. I sat down on a wood chair while "Cubby" enjoyed a plush booth seat with a zinfandel colored backing, should've insisted I sit there because it became problematic later (all that hiking can do that to you!). We were given menus and it didn't take long to decide.
For starters we decided on the Cheese Plate ($16 - A selection of three cheeses) which yielded a mouthwatering array of local cheeses in the form of a drier cheese cut into sticks (can't remember the name but we will call it El Capitan's Bounty), an orgasmic blue cheese which either was a Point Reyes or Stilton and a triple cream spreadable which played very nicely with the other two. Add in some french bread rounds and fruit square sweetness, we were good to go!
Our mains consisted of a Roast Beef Panino and a Priscutto & Fig Panino (both $10). My Roast Beef Panino was expertly assembled with tender roast beef, roasted red peppers, blue cheese, mayo and arrugula. All the flavors meshed beautifully and thankfully made my tummy happy enough to fill me up. Along with a spinach side salad with walnuts, cranberries, feta and a balsamic vinaigrette (this was graciously swapped out by "Cubby" because I was not happy with the green salad, such a good friend and Yosemite guide!).
Overall the wait staff were on point and made it very easy to venture back out into the wilds of Yosemite's backcountry with a smile on my face and energy to forge on!
Decided to try this place out for lunch after seeing all the great reviews and was not disappointed. Â Service was great and all of our meals were outstanding. Â Had the Chicken panini with mixed green salad which was great. Their one and only dessert was incredible. Â It was worth the trip just for that and some coffee. Â Looking forward to trying out the other paninis and stopping in for some wine during the evening hours.
Review Source:A friend and I wanted to try something new in town and came across this place. Â It is definitely a gem for Modesto. Â The location is a little off from downtown but well worth the visit. Â They have a large selection of wine (obviously), meats and cheeses, as well as panini. Â I ordered their chicken panini ($10~) and was surprised at how filling it was. Â Too full to try out the chocolate panini!
The staff was helpful and attentive. Â I was told the place can get pretty packed at night. Â And it seems, while we were there, they were prepping to host an event later on that day. Â Overall, a good place to relax with friends in town and share a glass of wine or two.
This place thinks it is a fancy wine bar but it really an overpriced panini shop. Rude and inattentive service. We sat at our table for 35 minutes before someone took our drink order. Our two flights of wine arrived another 20 minutes later. Taking this as a bad sign, and really wanting some food at this point, we left our money and bounced. Don't waste your time.
Review Source:What a nice little spot. This wine bar turned out to be a bit of a surprise. It was very cozy with the perfect balance of dimly lit seating, warm but modern decor, a relaxed atmosphere, comfy bar stools and a menu worth perusing. Coming in on a Monday evening is perfect for a date night. I'll admit, I found it romantic that we pretty much had the place to ourselves. The wine list offers a decent amount of wines by the glass with an array of local tastes and international wines. They balance it out with a good selection of craft beers for the non-wine drinkers. The only logical thing to indulge in when on a date is by sharing chocolate and wine. First up for wine was my favorite, Malbec. Next I went with the recommended pairing for the dessert, an Old Zin. Which brings me to the star of the hour, the Chocolate Panini. The gooey milk chocolate was enveloped between lightly dusted cinnamon sugared bread and served with housemade whip cream. It gave a new meaning to melt-in-your-mouth. There's no question we'll be returning when in Modesto.
Review Source:Went on a Sunday night at about 7:30pm. There was only one other table of people there. People trickled in while I was there.
The place is a but small, maybe only 10 tables? And the bar of course. Service was fine. Waiter explained the history behind the place which was nice.
Tried the bread with olive oils (jalapeño!), and the bacon jam/spinach/fig bruschetta (good!). Also tried the prosciutto panini and the chicken/apple panini. Both warm and tasted good. Would order both again.
Wine list was thorough, pages long.
If you come here expecting a panini and lots of wines, you will be pleased. If you come here looking for a long dinner menu, not the right place.
I would/will come here again.
The perfect place to chill out and unwind.
I stepped into this bar and totally forgot I was in Modesto. The place is a very contemporary and snazzy looking hang out located downtown. I came here on a Saturday night and ordered the chicken panini with brie and apples. Tasty! Very solid, and you can tell that all the components made to make the panini were of high quality. I also had a bite of my friend's three cheese and truffle oil panini. If you love truffle oil, this is a must try!
Along with our food we ordered a bottle of moscato. The service here is awesome! They came by every once in awhile and filled our glasses up for us, and even offered to chill our bottle for us since it was sitting open on our table for awhile. Very nice staff.
The chocolate panini here is their most popular item. It was definitely good, but I was not blown away. (Though this just might be because I'm not really big on desserts.) We were given a little bit of port on the house to go with it (please refer to the awesome service mentioned above), which I loved! Luckily, my friend didn't like the port so much, so I got to drink hers too. :)
I will definitely be back. Being here makes me feel like I'm living in the bay again! That is... until I walk outside and see that we're standing right across from the Department of Corrections. Yup, definitely still in Modesto.
BY far one of the BEST spots in Modesto! Fantastic  food...check! Relaxed atmosphere...check! Enormous selection of wines and brews...check! Â
I don't get to frequent as much as I would like to but I am looking forward to checking out the patio that was just added when it warms up! It definitely does not feel like you are in Modesto.
Perfect spot for lunch...date night...or even just a glass of wine after work!
Chocolate Panini is a MUST!
This place is hard as hell to find! I've driven and biked past it dozens of times and when I finally decided to drop in a couple months back, I couldn't find it to save my life. Its a very unassuming building about a five minute walk from MJC East Campus.
The food: Amazing. 10$ gets you a panini that you can't get anywhere else in town. I'm a personal fan of the soprasetta panini, but I haven't had anything on the menu that was bad. The chocolate panini dessert is also fantastic.
The service: Very casual, very relaxed. I've never gotten bad service and the employee's always seem incredibly genuine when I'm there.
The setting: Purse hooks on every table and at the bar. PURSE HOOKS. I cannot tell you how much joy i derive from being able to hang my purse instead of setting it on the ground. Its actually incredibly unreasonable how happy it makes me.
Camp 4 is a great place. Â I have had a few great nights here and the wine list is good. Â The food is really good too. Â It's not a place that you want to go if you want a full dinner, but for smaller stuff, it's awesome. Â If you are a fan of this place, try Concetta. Â Between the two you'll get amazing wine and awesome food. Â It's almost like they are sister establishments.
Review Source:This is the ONLY place in Modesto I like to go downtown.
I don't frequent bars or clubs in Modesto, because, really, what's the point? Camp 4 is upscale and I instantly feel like I am transported into a modern, industrial style bar in SF or LA. I love the feel of this place when you walk in. Instant calmness.
Damon always spends time talking with each customer and makes you feel like you are old friends. He has done an amazing job with the look & feel of this place.
Once you get over the "how can this place be in Modesto" thought, wait until you try the food or look at their wine selection. You will be blown away.
All I am going to say is - Chocolate Panini. You will regret it if you don't order this. It is AMAZING. Pair it with some red wine and you will be in Heaven.
Will continue to support this locally owned, classy establishment as long as it stands. Thank you for opening this in Modesto!
P.S. Best first date place - not overly trendy, casual enough to talk and lots to discuss within.
My wife and I went last Monday night with high expectations. The place met them! The place was packed with great live music. We just needed some dessert and wine. The chocolate panini was delicious and the wine that was suggested was great as well.
A great place to take out of towners!
What a surprise to find a trendy, upscale wine bar and sandwich operation in Royal Robbin's original building. Â And there are large black and white prints of a very young Royal in his prime climbing mode around Yosemite.
Nicely done with a great selections of wines, beers and sandwiches.
The other half of the building is Green's Grocery, organic stuff and the both operations are neat as a pin.
Will be back at Camp 4 for a few more times.
Wanting a nice glass of wine and a light appetizer, Dave and I drove by place after place in the downtown Modesto area, all of which were closed (with the exception of Galletto's). Â We almost gave up, until I Yelped & found Camp 4 was open on Sundays til 9pm. Â A rarity in this town...
I'd never been, and neither had Dave, but this may easily be one of our new favorite places in Modesto. Â We were waited on by the owner himself, the quietly charming Damon Robbins, son of Royal Robbins. Â Damon's passion for the place is evident in everything -- the open-and-spacious-yet-still-cozy-and-intimate design of the entire place, the accessibility of the menu, the selection of wines and beers, the AWESOME vinyl collection which he hand-selected throughout our nearly two hours there -- it's a place that is a joy to be in because of the care taken to make it a joy.
I got the sense that even on a very busy night, there would still be the personal, direct attention for customers from Damon and his staff, and that the crowd drawn to this great place would be one of good, positive energy.
Oh, and did I mention that the food was PERFECT??
Cute little wine bar with a neat story behind it. Â The story of the Cafe is printed on the front of the menu so if you go, take a moment to read about it. Â Given that I did read it, I was really hoping the owner would have been a little more adventurous and put a modern twist on camp food, or maybe had offered some really good soul food....but alas, it's an Italian place.
I enjoyed a glass of wine, Bruschetta and a panini with a side salad and everything was great. Â Overall a cute little place to eat with good service.
This is an awesome little place that is refreshing and a unique place to drink wine and eat some tasty food in Modesto. Â I went in recently and the service was excellent. Â The server was engaged and knowledgeable about both the food on the menu and wine list. Very helpful.
Delicious panini and side salds. Â You can taste the freshness and the quality of the ingredients. Â And the setting is relaxed and attractive. Â Very nice, low-key vibe. Â Highly recommend this place.
One last thing: Â prices very reasonable.
What a quaint fantastic little place! I went here on Oct 27th to see acoustic guitar musician Roem Baur perform. Â I brought my 15 year old daughter. Â We seated ourselves comfortably at a table against the wall. Â The colors are warm and inviting, and the servers are friendly and helpful.
Our turkey panino was perfect, and big enough to share. Â I love that they support local music, even when corporate radio is turning their back.
I'd go here again, and again, and again. Â And, again.
After receiving a reply from the owner, we gave this place another shot. We went again and tried having another bottle and light dinner. Our food was fabulous, the wine was great, and our waitress even made some helpful suggestions.
The place still has such a great atmosphere. We'll definitely be back.
Camp 4 has a lot of potential, and I can definitely see why it has a 4.5 star average rating on Yelp, but I can't in good conscience rate it higher without seeing some changes.
The positives: A unique modern / industrial atmosphere that sets it apart from the plethora of wine themed restaurants in the area. The food is progressive enough to offer a new experience while still appealing to a large audience. They offer a decent variety of quality wines and beers, and have some very talented musicians as part of their live entertainment.
The negatives: The staff, though friendly, has a very casual / unprofessional approach to customer service. The food is over priced for what you get, and the menu is extremely limited. After going only twice, I had already tried every appetizer and entrée on the menu that appealed to me. The restaurant is also much smaller than one would expect, and quickly runs out of seating room on busy nights.
The Bottom Line: This place is worth checking out but because of service, price and space issues, doesn't lend itself to a lot of repeat business.
I love this place.
Came in the first time with my teen son and the two of us powered through a charcuterie & cheese plate with gusto. Â Our server suggested we pair up the goat cheese with some quince jam....omg heaven. Only downside-they actually charge for soda refills. Â Great way to cut down on the empty calories I suppose.
The second time I was here was with a group from work. Everyone loved their panini but timing is not a strong point. Â Best not to try to rush a lunch in here unless you call ahead with an order. Â They just aren't built for speed. Â This is totally a chill out and enjoy yourself kind of place and Modesto is the better for it.
I am so impressed with Camp 4 lately! Â After posting my first review I was contacted by the owner of Camp 4. Â He told me he genuinely appreciated the feedback (both positive and negative) and would work with his staff on making changes where it made sense. Â
Fast forward 2 months... BAM! Â I can easily see the efforts Camp 4 has made to polish their service, offerings, and overall attentiveness. Â Camp 4 continues to be one of my favorite spots in Modesto. Â Camp 4 is precious to a place like Modesto; known for strip malls and chain restaurants. Â I try to come here once a week for a mellow but cool scene, good panninis, and the nice mix of beer/wine.
This is just a great place for intimate conversation--one of the few in Modesto. Â It is quiet enough for conversation, but with enough buzz that you don't feel overheard. Â We went Wed. tand they had live music--a guitarist; Thurs they generally have a jazz trio.
An excellent selection of wines by the glass or bottle (If your group wants  at least 2 glasses, they will open any bottle they have on their menu).
The soup is killer when they have it, and if you want dessert the  lemon creme brûlée with raspberries/chambord is fab.
