I went back last night to try some fresh fish and I was very impressed. I think the Cajun fried shrimp was the best I've ever had: perfectly crispy breading and superbly cooked (just nearly done) shrimp which were by all standards humongous.  Coupled with the garlic potatoes and cole slaw (I'd have preferred the greens) and the homemade corn bread, this was an awesome deal.

We also got the alligator tail with a hot sauce which was also perfectly cooked. The conch salad is delicious as well.

Nice bottled beers available, including those from my favorite Milwaukee brewery LakeFront!

I love shrimp and very rarely get fried shrimp because I've never been too impressed. Porky's has made me a convert. You should run there to try these.

Great food and great service.  The bbq is really good and so is the seafood.  Has both dine in and carry out.  Not a lot of seats for dine in, so keep that in mind when you get there.

Great food. Let me say it again - great food. Awesome people working there. Very friendly and I make a point to get to Porky's whenever I'm up in the area as unfortunately I no longer work in the area.

Favorites include: crab cakes, alligator tail, and anything BBQ. They also have great specials like etoufee.

We stopped in Saturday afternoon around 4pm for an early dinner.  Never been here before so we thought we would give it a shot. Girl that was behind the counter told us the specials and seemed really helpful to the other customers that were trying to make their decisions.  We made our choices of the combo meal.  My lady ordered rib tips and the shrimp with the sides of fries, coleslaw and a roll.  I ordered the pulled pork and hot link with the sides of greens , the garlic potatoes and the cornbread. I also had to induldge myself into ordering one of the specials, the stuffed sweet pepper, and I must say that was the definate highlight of my meal and am glad I made the choice to be a bit of a pig.  My hot link was well, a hot link.  If you like sweet sauce this is a good BBQ spot, I thought the sauce was very good even though I am more of a vinager based sauce kind of guy. The pulled pork was a little on the dry side and I really didn't get much of the smoke flavor that I was expecting.  The greens were very good although I think was mostly cabbage, nonetheless were pretty tasty. The garlic potatoes were red skins and had a very mild garlic taste, probably wouldn't order again.  The cornbread was pretty good although a bit dry.
I did have a taste of the rib tips and they were pretty dry and quite tough, her coleslaw I really didn't care for, lacked flavor and I must say my recipe for coleslaw is much better.

Now for the rave review...... THE SHRIMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  They were huge, lightly battered and DELICIOUS!!!!!!!

The next time we go back we will be having the seafood and will be staying the distance from the BBQ, although that stuffed pepper was equally delicious.  I would have been happy with just the shrimp and the pepper.

The BBQ needs some tweaking but we will be back to try the seafood.

Captain  porkies is good! Very good fried shrimp, good specials, pretty decent ribs.  Usually I don't go for fried seafood, but they keep it light on the oil and it does not make you feel gross from the frying. All if the seafood is freshly displayed in the front cooler so you can pick what you want to eat.
The artichoke salad is a bit heavy on onion, the bbq beans are good with some  interestingly different spices. You may have to wait a bit for the food, and it is a little pricey, but also worth it!
I like it, especially for lake county.

Not sure of the outfit next door('The Shanty' bought to fame by DDD's Guy Fieri) , but Captain Porky's dishes out some the best comfort food for folks living north of  Chi town. Most of the items on the menu can be made-to-order, with some of my personal favorites being Cajun Catfish fillets, Craw fish Po'boy and the slow cooked lamb, which is only available of the weekends. The seasoning on the some of the dishes is just right.Items can either be ordered individually or as a meal which comes with a generous helping of fries and some sides.
The staff is courteous, friendly and will allow to try some of the slow roasted barbecued items before ordering. Its a shame they don't serve alcohol.

The fried seafood was definitely the highlight of my meal here.  I frequently am disappointed by the meat to batter ratio or sogginess of fried seafood but everything here is made to order.  They did not even batter the shrimp until I had ordered it.  The shrimp is of excellent size and was crispy without having too much batter.  The ribs were also quite tasty.

Stopped in for lunch on Sunday and not sure if that had anything to do with our experience.  I got thee the 1/2# of brisket and my wife got the pulled pork sandwich and we got a order of clam chowder to split.  I open the box to find brisket swimming is a sea of BBQ sauce trapped in my a foil wrapper.  The brisket was really tough, seemed like it was not cooked right(too hot an too fast)  With so much sauce I was not able to taste any smoke in the meat, seems like they were hiding the overcooked issue with lots of sauce.  My wives pork was better and had a good bark and worked well with all the sauce they put on, but there were quite a few bit of meat that were really really dry.  The clam chowder seemed more like cream of veggie no real clam flavor or chunks of clam to be found but lot of big chucks(bigger than the spoon) of potatoes, carrots and celery and it tasted like it was thickened with corn starch rather than cream and flour.  The seafood options did look better after we sat down and took more of the menu in.  Got the feeling they were a  seafood/fry shop that did smoked seafood and then decided to offer beef and pork.  If we are in the area and have a taste for fried seafood we might go back to try it but for BBQ there are much better options.

Eat here, it's incredible!! Best BBQ I have ever had. Their chicken is moist and smokey, the shrimp is HUGE! The alligator is tender and the catfish is perfect! We will be back again and again.

We were looking for a place to eat and heard about The Shanty (Food Network pumped this place up), unfortunately our party was too big (10 people) to be seated in less than hour.  So next door was this little take out place that we could eat right away.

Well everyone,WOW, this place is a HIDDEN GEM.  (Note:  Same owners of The Shanty.)  The alligator tails were DELICIOUS and Salmon OFF THE HOOK and the Soft Shell TASTY.  Please give this place a try if you are in the area.  You will be surprise.

I had the alligator po'boy and it was absolutely delicious. I can't wait to go back and try more off the menu. My only complaint is that it is so far from my house.

A bit unsure of how to review this one....and I have to first say that I think it's very weird that reviewing on here is like a m-u-s-t for Chicagoans and out here in suburbia most places only have between 10-20 reviews....I better choose my words carefully.
Warning: Lobster Roll is NOT like any you have had in the city.  This should really be called lobster salad because there is so much celery and red onion, mayo, spices, ect it is really hard to identify any little bit of lobster in it.  Guess that is why it's 8 bucks not 20.
Shrimp though, very well done, hot and yummie, get the drawn butter!!
Hubby had the ribs, not bad.  Might go back to try the soft shell crab....

If you want good New Orleans style food this tha place to get it. Im from tha NOLA area and I would know. There are only a few tables but tha old location had none. If you have to sit in your car and eat. I was really impressed and prices are pretty fair.

From the moment you walk in, this place screams road house.  With its ruff hewed wood, bench style seating and cleptic wall hangings, you just know you steeped into someplace rustic.

The owner of the place is right there behind the counter, talking and working on the special of the day.   The other staff members know what they are going and keep things moving along.   There is nothing fancy about this place, but as you gaze thru the various meats/seafood behind the glass counters, you can't help but look on with great anticipation.   Of course the smell only makes it harder to decide on what to get.

As one reviewer stated, the clam chowder is a bit different, which I agree with.  It's not bad, but different.   The potatoes and slaw sides were really good!   I ordered a combination of sausage and ribs.   I personally found the ribs a bit dry, but nonetheless they were good.  The sausage however were really good and only wished I could have had more.

You can bet, I'll be back here again to try other items!

Now moved to a better location at the corner of Rt. 41 and Wadsworth Road, this is a great restaurant for fried seafood as well as barbecue.  The place is clean yet has an old-time feel with the log cabin environment but also alligator skull and other southern knick knacks.  You order at the counter, but the glass displays show all the fresh seafood ready to be seasoned and battered along with the barbecue and side items in the other display.  They have daily specials which have been 1.5 lb lobster for $20 and beef stroganoff.

The soft shell crab was spectacular.  Lightly dusted and quickly fried, the entire crab had great texture and was quite tasty.   The market price was 1 for $4 so stick with the soft shell crab po boy which gives you 2 of them for $7.99 plus you can use the bread, tomatoes, lettuce, and dressing to help finish the rest of your meal.  The brisket was smoked very tender and had a good rub.  Pulled pork was melt-in-your-mouth quality and the ribs fell off the bone.  I especially liked their blackeyed peas side though the cornbread was cold and too moist.  Clam strips seemed like they were pre-frozen.  The fried cod, which could be ordered as part of a bbq combo, was nicely done and appealed to a few people who weren't big fans of fish.

The staff was very patient with my friends who hadn't been here before and I've seen them make sure regular customers like any new thing they've tried (they offered to replace it but the regular customer refused).  The price point is pretty fair considering the labor needed for your order and the quality of the food.  Despite the distance, overall, a place I'd definitely return to try more things!

A bit far but I think it's worth it for the fresh seafood and greens.

Came here with my dad and stepmom on our way to the outlets in WI. They came here over the summer a couple of times and really enjoyed the jambalaya and fried mushrooms. Mushrooms, you ask? Not just those regular white button mushrooms but ones that the owner himself forages for on his farm.( I didn't get to taste them as the season is over but come spring/summer I will be back to eat those mushrooms.) Yeah, dude got his own farm where he raises the blue gill I ate and grows the greens that come as one of the sides.

The fried blue gills I had were really good-crunchy, mild taste, not fishy and lightly seasoned with salt and pepper. I picked greens, garlic potatoes and corn bread as my sides. The greens had that lovely bitter, garlicky taste to it that I love and the potatoes were sooo good. Corn bread was a little dry.

My dad had the jambalaya which was pretty tasty too. I liked the andouille sausage. My stepmom had the fried frogs' legs which were good too, but they had a little bit of a taste to them. And they were a little bit too chewy for my taste.

The service was great. We were treated like old friends. The owner came by to ask us how everything was and my dad told him how much he loved the greens. The owner then told us he picks them himself and said he would give us some to take home. How many restaurant owners would do that??? He went in the kitchen and then came back with a takeout box full of it and said the next time we come in, if we want it cooked the Greek way, just ask for it and he'll make it for us. Can't beat that!

Crabcake PoBoy was good and very fresh. Not frozen. Young lady behind the counter was very good at recommending vegetarian options, and was very personable.

Amazingly well cooked seafood. Being from California, this place was quite impressive considering their location (in the middle of almost nowhere!).

Seasoning was perfect on the Cajun shrimp... seasoning/fries could be improved, but the decor and vibe overcame this. Owner was friendly as well.

Wish there were more places like this in the area...  you can tell they took pride in their establishment.

Good food and great service. It's great to go into a place where the team working there all know the job and are helpful. The seating is limited for dine in but worth the wait.

Pulled pork shouldn't be slimy... The clam chowder is unlike ANY chowder I've ever had... there was NOTHING I tasted or saw that would ever get me to stop here again... It's a shame too... I'm not that picky of an eater but i do LOVE good BBQ, Just wish they offered some...

Fresh sea food is the best stuff here. The gulf shrimp po boy is my fav. I have had most of the menu and it can be hit or miss with the BBQ. Sea food is always good. Greens are tasty. Alligator and frog legs to me is like chicken, not exotic at all on taste. Sea food stew and gumbo were good but I have nothing to compare it to. I had gumbo in New Orleans but with all the alcohol on bourbon street I can't remember how it tasted. The fresh smoke fish is my thing lately, where do you find that around here. This place between Chicago and Milwaukee is something out of the ordinary that you can't find everywhere. This is on my permanent
list of places to eat. They have specials of the day on face book and the guy makes and sells his own olive oil, yah there greek. I haven't had any regular stuff like the beef sandwich but why bother when so much fresh sea food is on display in the case. If you choose this is also a sea food butcher that sells fresh by the pound. They also cater and I see large trays of food going over the counter to people. The people are nice and the place has limited seating for eat in. Most of the time there is a line when I go. Pre made food/steam table is limited but most food is cooked to order so you will wait but its worth it. This is thumbs up in my book.

I have been going to Captain Porky's for years but have to admit I have grown to appreciate the food there much more as I have gotten older. I like it even more now that they have a new and improved facility. The other restaurant looked really dirty and old.
My favorites are the fried chicken wings, jumbo cajun shrimp and the rib tibs. You can get a combo with 2 meat items and 2 sides all for 9.99 or less. You can't beat that!

wide selection of fresh seafood. My top of the list are: Perch, jumbo shrimp. add just couple more bucks and make it as a meal. Plus never forget to get their amazing Baklava. It's so good!
You can call in advance to order and go there to get it. They mostly do the take out, though they have tables and long benches for dine in.
For the price, freshness and selection, I am their fan alright!!

Having eaten a great deal of barbecue from North Carolina and other parts of the south, porky's just doesn't cut it. On the Sarurday evening that I ate here, my family and I were the only customers under 300lbs. The food is pricey for the quality.

Fantastic BBQ.  Great fresh seafood selections.  The staff is super friendly and will do just about anything you need.  Substituted eggplant for zucchini because they were out and it was great. Output a fresh grilled fish that was amazing.

It's a bit of a haul to get to Captain Porky's but if you're in the area, it's fantastic. You can try just about everything on the menu for a few bucks. Since a lot of those options are fried, it will sit heavy but sometimes that's what hits the spot!

Hit or miss. We have been here a dozen or so times for take-out with mixed results. They have good ribs, pulled pork, and brisket sometimes? Really different things are on there menu like alligator.

I'm a huge fan of Captain Porky's! I love how inexpensive and huge their portions are. I tried their pulled pork sandwich (surprise, surprise) which was pretty good, but have some pieces that were overcooked and had the consistency of jerky. I liked the sauce and ended up making a huge mess while eating there.

My favorite thing from CP's is their gigantic shrimp! They're big, fresh, and the batter is perfect and golden. I tried them in a shrimp po'boy which was good, but I'd rather save all my stomach space for those shrimp...not the bread, mayo, tomato, lettuce etc..

Wow!  I just discovered this wonderful joint by accident, driving by on my way home from Wisconsin last night.  I popped  in to get a menu and ran into a friend of mine who said he just discovered it a few weeks ago and had been back 5 times already (and we live 45 minutes away!)
Between the real pit smoked BBQ, daily specials and the fresh fried seafood it was really hard to choose what to order.  I sampled 1/2 pound of the freshest, largest fried shrimp I've had.  Light and flaky breading, not an ounce of grease.  I can't wait to come back and try the fried Lake Perch, Walleye and even Frog Legs.  I tried a small tail piece of their smoked lake trout.  Perfectly smoked and not dry.  It would be great on a bagel and cream cheese.  From the BBQ side we regrettably passed up the recommended leg of lamb and opted for the spare ribs and 1/2 BBQ chicken.  The Generous sized slab was tasty, well smoked, although super lean, which did make them a little dry, just the way my hubby likes them.  For a mere $2 you can upgrade anything to a meal which include "killer" garlic potatoes and mixed greens and a small piece of moist and yummy cornbread.
The owner Gino uses a lot of local farm to table ingredients including organic goat milk for his homemade goat cheese!  He raises his own chickens on his own farm nearby. He imports olives (or did he say olive oil?) from his organic family farm in Greece.  This place is the real deal.
Pick up your food at the counter and sit at  one of a 1/2 dozen long wooden tables, NO TIP necessary!
I can't wait to go return.

I stopped here for the first time, and the specialty in this carry-out is seafood (just as for its attached big brother, The Shanty, a full-service restaurant).  Nonetheless, the special was beef brisket so that's what I ordered.  What a mistake.  The sandwich was virtually inedible, and I threw out at least half of it.  Chunks of beef were fatty and rubbery, hard to bite off and unpleasant to chew. I'll stop here again to try the much praised seafood, but my first experience here gave me doubts about their quality control.  I'm giving two stars because of the welcoming look and feel of the place, and the very attractive display of seafood.

    YUM!!

Fresh FRESH seafood... good bbq sauce. Haven't anything besides the fried chicken and catfish... oh and the perch. Awesome.

The bbq sauce is homemade too and it's delicious. Service is pretty good too. Just ask about the latest catch and your wait time will feel like 30 seconds.

Call ahead if you can though.
