My band played a show here a few months ago and had a really good experience. Staff was friendly, plenty of options for drinks, and lots of space to sit, hangout, and listen to music. As far as I know, this place used to be "Hell", and before that was "Trolls", the latter of which was apparently one of the diviest bars in CH, but the place certainly seems to have gotten a bit nicer. I hope this place becomes more popular among students as an alternative to the typical fratty drinking spots, it definitely has a lot to offer. Would recommend.
Review Source:Chapel Hill Underground is nice and relaxed, with a good selection of beers and table games (air hockey, foosball, pool). Â It also seems to be a nice place for dance parties, and is hidden enough that while you may hear the mayhem upstairs at Bub's, you should at least theoretically avoid some of it.
Review Source:I love Underground! Â The beer selection is pretty solid and decently priced, and the atmosphere is fun and laid back. Â The crowd there tends to be a lot less undergrad frat boy than the rest Chapel Hill (I guess they go upstairs to Bub's), but much less hipstery than Carrboro, as well; it's a nice in between. Â There are dance nights and live music as well, which are always really fun. Â In general, one of my favorite places to grab a drink in Chapel Hill.
Review Source:Located where Hell used to be (so I am told by the Hill folk). Â It is a cool dive bar/pool hall. Â Plenty of seating, reasonably priced drinks, and walls displaying local art.
I have only been on weekdays and it's really chill and not crowded, but my friends say it is packed on weekends. Â They also have live music sometimes.
It's definitely a change of scenery from the usually douchey CH nightlife crowd (ie: Library). Â More hipster than prep.
