My mother-in-law (MIL) wanted to try this place because someone at Merrill Gardens recommended it to her. Â I was expecting a dive, but was surprised with how large the place was inside and the bathroom was immaculate. Â Despite being busy, the server was very polite and made sure to keep us informed. Â The food was large in portion and very tasty. Â I ordered bacon, eggs, hash browns, and sourdough bread. Â I am used to getting 2 pieces of bacon, but this place doubled it. Â My MIL ordered a cheese omelet and gave the server several special instructions due to her strict diet. Â The server listened to her without losing patience and the food arrived as ordered. Â It is hard to please my MIL, but she did not complain once while in this establishment.
Review Source:This was our first visit to Charlies and we will be back for sure! I went searching on Google for a Mother's Day Brunch and found the offerings and price at Charlies to be what we were looking for. After reading other Yelp reviews we were quite sure we found the right place for us. With two slightly picky teenagers we wanted to make sure they would find plenty of things they would enjoy, and they did! Everything on the buffet was hot, the portions were huge and the there was a great variety of flavors. My daughter was quite excited by the chocolate fountain as well. We can't wait to come on a normal day and try some of the regular menu options.
Review Source:Skip to the end to see the condense version of my review. When we first arrived we were kind of confused where to seat, there wasn't a host when we first came in. Lounge was to the left and dining to the right. We were kind of skeptical by the way it looked. (Old looking) Our waitress, Courtney, was really nice and welcoming. She recommended the fish and chips and the salad bar. We ordered the chicken quesadilla as an appetizer and I also ordered what she recommended, the fish and chips, and my girl ordered the So-Cal burger. We were surprised at how big and how good it looked. Crispy on the outside with we sized chunks of chicken on the inside with tomatoes, black olives and green onions. Really good! Entrees come with a one trip through the salad bar. Â Burgers don't qualify but you can pay for a one trip through the salad bar. Â Lettuce looked fresh and so did all the toppings for the salad. Â They also had potato salad and a corn salad which were both good. Fish and chips were really good, good portions of meat and just the right amount of crust. Fries were really good as well! I requested coleslaw with my fish and chips. Â Our waitress informed us that coleslaw is usually in the salad bar but she would bring some with my meal. Dont get the coleslaw, not good at all. My girl loved the So-Cal burger. We were unable to finish anything because of the portions so we took it home. Highly recommend this place. Next time I will come for breakfast because people around use ordered breakfast and it looked really good as well. Definitely will be coming back and will recommend Charlies to people.
Pros: Waitress, Quesadillas, Fish and Chips and So-Cal Burger. Â (Would have liked to try more by the look of our food that we ordered)
Cons: At the time we arrived no one greeted us and the coleslaw.
Would have liked to try their breakfast (Which looked really good) and their desserts.
We had one of the nicest waitresses ever. Â Friendly and going above and beyond with good service. Â The food was also very good - homemade potatl salad, burgers were flavorful and fresh, soup was also very good and not overly salted. Â We were there for lunch on the weekend - not packed but a good crowd. Â I would definitely recommened this place.
Review Source:Where can you find Big10 football on Sundays AND get a good breakfast in Puyallup? After calling every establishment in the sleepy town of Puyallup, WA, we finally found Charlie's -- and I must say they did not let us down! We were able to grab a seat in the bar, even though they usually don't open it until 11 am. The manager and bartender (wish I had gotten names!) were so welcoming and accommodating. But really, let's talk about the pancakes. For a mere $8.99 you get a classic American breakfast that does not disappoint. Eggs, meat and pancakes the size of your head. But don't worry, if you still need more, the pancakes are bottomless!
Review Source:Charlies is simply a good old fashioned restaurant.  Harken back to the 70's when everyplace had a salad bar and good old fashioned comfort foods.  The servers are honest and genuinely attentive to your needs.  If you are a drama queen who demands princess status, you might want to go elsewhere. You won't find the latest trends, or anything that ranks on the modern trendy food scene.  What we have here is a solid, dependable purveyor of classic Americana.  Did I mention the salad bar?  Fill your plate with lettuce, pickled beets, hardboiled eggs and homemade croûtons. When was the last time you found this in one place?  My personal favorite on the menu is the rib eye served blue rare.  If you understand a blue rare steak, then let me assure you, the cooks can prepare a better steak than any other place in Washington, period.
Review Source:First time here for food and not just drinks. Â Salad bar was good, stuffed mushrooms were decent, got Chicken Caprese pasta which was okay but overpriced. Â To be fair I didn't expect much from the neighborhood bar.
My real issue was with the service: Waitress was apathetic, and seemingly dragging for a random, slower, Tuesday night. Â She came across irritated when I didn't order more than one drink and didn't attempt to establish rapport at all. Â She did however have time for a smoke break out front before I even got a food menu. Â What really got me was when she threw my credit card receipt and her pen down in front of me and walked away without even a simple thank you. Â
Average food and poor service doesn't encourage repeat customers.
Yelp apparently filtered my last review :( All I wanted to say was how much fun karaoke is here. My friends and I had a great time the other night with singing, dancing, strong drinks, and hot food. We had great "bar food" - tater tots, baskets of fries, and mini corn dogs off their late night menu. It's a diverse crowd with lots of country music and oldies, but we threw in some Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls to kick it up :)
You definitely have to check out karaoke. It's a fantastic way to spend your Friday with friends!
Very casual place. Â The burgers were great and so were the onion rings and french fries. Â The servers were extremely cute and friendly, they were attentive and even the host said good night when we left.
I saw on the menu they served breakfast all day , all in all it was a Homey feeling. There is a bar on the opposite side of the restaurant that had a  good amount of seating and it seemed to be a good mix of people.  I'd go back again for either.
I went Sunday for an opportunity to redeem my free breakfast and enjoy some yummy food. Unfortunately, it didn't turn out well. This time my eggs were runny when I requested them poached hard (I uploaded a picture of my breakfast). We flagged down our server so I could request my eggs be redone. When my breakfast was brought back out it was apparent they had left the old eggs on the English muffins and added more eggs and hollandaise. I opted to not have breakfast there. The server took my food back and spoke with the kitchen manager who sent her back to tell us our breakfast would be free and he was "sorry they couldn't please me"
I am trying to give the best account of what happened without sounding dramatic or rude. Honestly, it was frustrating that the kitchen manager couldn't come out to apologize. I am not a snob. I am not mean to servers and in fact we still tipped our server because she shouldn't get stiffed because the kitchen wouldn't make decent food.
I just would have liked my breakfast the way I ordered it. I hope it is apparent I'd prefer to be saying how wonderful my experience was and how delicious my breakfast was but that didn't happen. Thank you for the apology kitchen manager but I will not be returning to your restaurant.
Pretty cool place. Â I only got a beer here, so I can't say too much about the place. Â Bar tender was cool, waitress was nice, Â is a little out of date, but oh well who really cares that much. Â I mean it's clean so who cares how out dated it is. Â Quick service. Â Next time I'll spend more time then just a drink.
Review Source:Horrible and slow service. Â My friend and I walked into the lounge. Â 2 tables were filled and the rest of the area was empty. Â It took a good 5 minutes until anybody had noticed that we had sat down. Â The bartender took our order. Â My friend ordered a drink and an order of quesadillas. Â From the time the bartender left and the time we received our quesadillas it had already been more than 20 minutes. Â For 10 bucks we got 4 pieces of mediocre food. Â I think this place caters more to the regulars because the bartender seemed very suspicious of us and she never checked up on how we were doing. Â My friend had to walk up to the bar and wait for her (she was nowhere in sight) to get our check.
Review Source:Went to Charlie's last night. Â Had trouble finding the place, but eventually got there. Â Nice inside, clean for sure. Â At first sat in a booth, but the 4 of us are big, so asked for a table. Â Ended up with a round table with a half moon bench and 3 chairs. Â We had to sit 2 in the booth because the chair was blocking the small isle.Got really crowded around 6.
That said, the food was excellent, great salad bar which is a choice with an entree, and service was very good. Everyone pitches in to serve and refill, but they don't huver. Nice that they serve breakfast all day long.
We all said we would return, and bring others!
Next time I get the Lava Cake first! Too full after dinner to order it.
It feels weird to review Charlie's, because honestly - Â I've always known/assumed it to be a bit of a Puyallup hole-in-the-wall. Just another run down bar/restaurant in desperate need of some TLC and updating.
Well, guess what? It's been TLC'd. The remodel looks great!
My best friend's "tea party" Bridal Shower was at Charlie's this past weekend in their brand new event room, and it was AMAZING - they have a fantastic banquet room, complete with a private bar for your use, brand new flatscreen TVs mounted on aged, historic-looking bricks walls, high ceilings and employees that bend over backwards to make sure your event is perfect. AND, as a newlywed PAINED by finding locations that would allow outside catering... THEY ALLOW OUTSIDE CATERING! Be still, my heart! I was so pleased!
Only two minor faults: no windows mean the room was a bit stuffy for my liking, and a creeper from the bar kept sneaking in to "take pictures" of all the gals... we eventually had to ask him not-so-eloquently to STOP IT, talk to management and be careful keep the only door closed. But, that's not really Charlie's fault now, is it? It was actually quite comical.
Overall, if you have a laid-back party you want to throw, and would like to bring your own food/beverages, check this place out. It was a pleasant surprise!
We stumbled onto Charlie's waiting for a train to finish crossing the tracks! Â We were actually looking for another restaurant but thought we'd give Charlie's a try. Â So glad we did!
Very nice interior, almost like an "upscale diner" - spotlessly clean, and very cozy. Â The hostess was delightful and friendly, and kindly told us the table we had chosen is drafty, and pointed us to a table that wasn't in the path of the cold air from when the door opens.
The menu is fairly broad - again, very much "diner" - lots of "comfort food". Â I chose the fish & chips, Anne the Reuben sandwich. Â Then we each shared half. Â Anne also had the split pea soup.
The fish is obviously hand-battered in homemade batter. Â We got 3 large pieces, more than enough. Â It was VERY tasty! Â The fries were also really yummy - really crisp and flavorful. Â The Reuben was pretty good - a little heavy on gooey cheese but was not bad at all. Â The only thing we didn't care for was the split pea soup - it was VERY thick - not very "soup like".
More like paste, really.
And talk about CLEAN! Â Absolutely SPOTLESS. Â Even the bathrooms, which are very upscale, were spotless and beautiful. Â Just past the bathrooms is a wonderful cozy and upscale bar with a fireplace. Â Beautiful area! Â And in that part of the building are 3 large group rooms for meetings and groups.
Great restaurant in every way - 5 "as good as it gets" Yelp stars.
Dave & Anne
This is a cute, old-fashioned place with a nice traditional menu and good service. The salad bar is quite nice.
Last night the cauliflower-cheese soup was inedible (oversalty and gelatinous), and the Chicken a la Florence had a flavorless sauce (though the chicken was lightly breaded and perfectly cooked). If your expectations are pretty low for the food, though, you could have a nice experience here.
So, since my initial review, I have revisited Charlie's several times. Sometimes you revisit a restaurant and are disappointed because the service or food did not match your prior experience. Charlie's will not disappoint you; not on the first visit or at any other time.
I returned for breakfast on several other occasions. On my last visit, the service (as in my first and every subsequent visits) was to die for. For example; I spilled my creamer a little and used my napkin to wipe it up. This was just a tiny spill, but I immediately had a new napkin placed on my table (thank you Karen!). The other day I witnessed something remarkable. Â I went in for lunch and was preoccupied (as usual), with the reading and answering of my text messages. I noticed an elderly couple, most likely in their 80's, being warmly greeted and subsequently seated nearby. Shortly afterward, the woman said something softly to the waitress. I overheard the woman state she had a hard time getting up. Our waitress retrieved her walker (which she had expertly tucked out of the way when seating them) and assisted her to her feet. They proceeded to walk with the waitress lending a supporting arm to the salad bar (as I assumed that was their destination) but then they continued walking past the salad bar and disappeared around the corner. I immediately realized this wonderful waitress was assisting this sweet old woman to the restroom. They were gone for at least five minutes, only to return with the waitress gingerly assisting the elderly patron back to her seat, where she discreetly re-parked the walker out of sight. She received a heartfelt thank you from the woman's husband. I could not believe this just happened. If this had been any one of a number of run-of-the-mill chain restaurants or 99% of any other places, that sweet old woman would have been left to her own accord. This level of service is typical of the dozen or so times I have revisited Charlie's - I kid you not.
I have eaten and drank (hopefully not too much) in the lounge watching football on several occasions. They have three nice, large flat-panel TVs, all tuned to different games. You can cozy up next to the fireplace and watch all three screens, eat great bar food (I hate to call it that because it is just too good) and enjoy the company of the nice people who patronize Charlie's. My recommendation is the J-shrooms. I don't go there often enough, but am always greeted by my first name. Hmmm. I might have to stop in today; it IS Sunday after all!
The Wife and I decided to go here because we had one of those coupons from the Entertainment Book (A great way to try new places). Â Anyways it sits in downtown Puyallup, which is lit up with all sorts of decorations right now.
When you first enter, its almost like you are taken back to the 70's and 80's, Large white booths, lots of glass and neon, very funny looking. Â But we are not here for the decor are we?
Anyways, you get soup or salad bar with your entree, Â the salad bar was a real treat because it wasn't just a bucket of lettuce and some croutons, Â I would say it had around 12-15 selections, as well as 4-5 other salad options and 4-5 different kinds of bread. Â The coleslaw and potato salad were great.
I had the captain's platter, the fish and calm were really good, and the shrimp were jumbo. Â A great platter of food
Will definitely come here again!
My husband and I came here for dinner because there was a coupon for it in our local entertainment book. Despite the fact that this place has been around forever, I've never been inside. What a pleasant surprise!
Ok, so it's not a fancy-schmancy 5-star restaurant. Don't go in expecting that. It's just a nice little hometown cafe, but boy is it good! Some of my favorite things:
A great salad bar. Everything looked fresh and they had lots of options for adorning your salad. The coleslaw was delicious. Nice and sweet, just the way I like it! They also had a great potato salad, made with baby reds. YUM!
French fries! Everybody has their favorite kind, and I love the kind they serve here. Crispy on the outside, tender and hot on the inside. Perfect!
Portions? They're generous. My fish and chips came with 4 good sized pieces of cod on a bed of hot fries. Of course, with such a delicious salad bar (did I mention it comes standard with entrees?) I had plenty of left overs!
So originally we went in because we had a coupon, but we'll definitely be back!
