I thoroughly loved this place!! Â It was so good. Â We made our way to the counter and told the girl that this was our first time and we would need a minute. Â She offered us samples to try! Â That was wonderful and so surprising! Â She brought out the pulled pork and the brisket. Â Both were so good it was hard to choose between the two. Â We chose the brisket.
Fries are huge and large enough to share. Â Hubby had the greens beans...so good. Â I had the potato salad...even better!
This place is so good...highly recommend!!
Ordered take out tonight. The menu was easy to understand and very clear. I thought that the pricing was fair; I did think that the price of the sides was a little high, however once I say how big they (most) were I was pleased.
I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw. I did not receive the slaw on the sandwich, but was already at home so I didn't get to try any. The pulled pork was amazing. I am pretty picky when it comes to pork sandwiches and this one was truly awesome (even plain). I ordered a side of hush puppies and green beans with bacon. I was so bummed that I only got 4 hush puppies; they were amazing as well but I wish that I had more. The green beans with bacon was average.
My boyfriend got the smoked chicken sandwich. It was great as well. I am glad that they source locally for the chicken. he ordered the fries and baked beans w/ brisket for his two sides. He received a TON of fries ( I was jealous ) and he said that the baked beans were good, too.
For dessert I ordered a peach cobbler. The price was pretty cheap and I received a HUGE serving. The cobbler was good. The side of whipped cream was delicious.
The to go specialist offered me multiples of each sauce because I told her that I had never been there and she gave me explanations of each. I thought that was very considerate. All in all the staff seemed really friendly, eager to help, and happy to be there. They made the atmosphere really inviting.
It was good and I'll be back. I would love to try their other sides and have the pork with cole slaw.
Some of the better BBQ I've had in Indy. BUT I've only been back for a bit.
I had some pork and brisket
Pork - better than the brisket. Smoked better and much more flavor.
Brisket - it was OK. I've had better and much worse. Â It seemed like it should have been cooked a bit longer. Also, it needed some more love. It was lacking flavor.
Overall, it was a good experience. The sides are good and they have a handful of sauces to choose from. Â Price was average. The sandwiches are priced well, but the sides are a bit pricey (they are good sized)
We were so skeptical of fast food-ish barbeque, but I can't tell you how pleasantly surprised we were by City Barbeque. We're probably above average when it comes to barbeque knowledge (see previous review of Smoque, AKA the best barbeque place in America), and we thought this was better than Squealers...
We both got pulled pork sandwiches (don't mess with a good thing) and tried all the sauces. We both ended up choosing a blend of the original and spicy sauces. We split fries (excellent), mac and cheese (meh), and baked beans (very tasty) as sides. I think our bill was about $18. They also get points for having extremely polite and quick service and for cleanliness!
I'm still kind of in awe of how good it was given my preconceived notions of what I thought it would be like. We'll definitely be back in the future (and hope to have just as excellent experiences)!
This is passable barbecue many miles beyond the traditional American barbecue cities. Real barbecue sauce served on the side just like in Memphis or Texas. The meats are excellent.
What really sets this place apart is the extremely friendly staff. Most chains would be content to have an apathetic staff that pushes the buttons on the register. City Barbeque is staffed by real people that know the menu and are pleasant to be around.
Service is very fast, prices are fair and the food is great. It's a big pig and you can be a big pig, too!
Went back here a couple weeks ago and I was pleased to discover the brisket was actually good! Not the *best* I've ever had, but it was the best brisket they had made in the dozen or so times I've eaten here. It held together and had a nice smoke flavor.
This return trip was to celebrate my daughter's birthday with family, and we discovered to our dismay that they don't take reservations. Even when you tell them you have a party of 22. Even when you offer to put down a $100 deposit to hold the back room. Not sure why that's their policy, but thankfully we managed to get everyone seated together.
When I first went to City BBQ, I really didn't know what to expect. Was I shocked just how delicious it is! I haven't had a single thing that I don't like. I LOVE the pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, and the potato salad so much. The cornbread and hush puppies are awesome. Then, there's the family pack. One pound of pulled pork, four buns, two large sides, and four mini cornbread loafs for $20. Awesome for a family, or a small group of friends. It's now a staple for us.
Another perk, the rewards program. For every $100 you get $5 off on your next order. I'll take it!
The sauce is also quite tasty.
Even though this isn't more like a traditional BBQ joint (you do have to clean up after yourself), the food is great, the price is right, and I highly recommend it.
I've had alot of BBQ and thus is one of the best thus far. The brisket is phenomenal and the quantity of food is insane. If you like bread like me then you'll also be in love with the corn bread. My hubby and I usually get one of the sampler platters and split it up. Â The meat it quality and not fatty cheap stuff slathered in sauce. Â If you want good smoked, long cooked BBQ without the sugary sauce masking low quality, then you'll love City BBQ. Â Also, the customer service is tops! Ask for a sample and they'll let you try it out.
Review Source:Had the Pulled Pork Lunch Plate, about $9 for that +soft drink. Â The place is clean, and both the sides (greens, potato salad) were good, and big. Â
But, the sandwich itself was TINY.
I'd guess it was about 3.5" in diameter. Â For a moment I thought I'd been served a kiddie portion, but saw two people behind me with the same size sandwich. Â
I guess the idea is to fill you up with the side dishes. Â
The taste was good, but in a BBQ joint you just expect adult-sized portions. Â Fortunately there was a Subway nearby and I was able to get a couple cookies.
if you're hungry, do NOT get the lunch plate special.
My Uncle took me here while I was visiting. Â He prefaced the meal by saying the ribs are way better here than at Famous Daves. He also told me to get the baked beans. Â I got the cole slaw. Â We had a sampler platter, everything was so good that we ate our meal in silence. Â My favorite was the ribs, the brisket, and the corn bread. Â My advise bring your appetite and friends and get the baked beans not the coleslaw.
Review Source:I've read some reviews of City BBQ and wonder if we even ate at the same place. Â
First of all, City Barbeque rocks! Â I've had BBQ from Indy to TX and all parts in between including Memphis, Kansas, and all the other well know cities for their BBQ. Â For your money, I was very pleased with the offerings.
I usually get the Deluxe City sampler platter and split it with my wife as it goes a long way. Â "DELUXE CITY SAMPLER": 1/4 chicken and 1/2 slab plus pork, brisket, 2 sides, 2 corn breads and Texas toast. Â The green beans aren't briny and overloaded with onions. Â They are flavorful and hold their own. Â The mac n chz is very cheesy and sticks to your fork like momma makes.
I've tried the ribs as well. Â Every Tuesday is Rib Bone Tuesday! $1.15 per Rib Bone
$1.99 per Rib Bone any day but Tuesdays. Â Full or half rack with two sides won't leave you asking for more.
The only thing I can say bad about the place is the deserts. Â Didn't care for the Peach Cobbler or the Triple Chocolate cake much, but I was there for the BBQ any way. Â
I've had Judge's, GT South's, Squealers, King Ribs, Black Diamond, Dick's, Smokey Bones and many others. Â For the money, you can't beat City BBQ. Â Many times at the other popular places, the sauce covers dry meat for a reason or they use lesser cuts in hopes the smokey ring covers the BBQ. Â At City BBQ, the meat, the smoke ring and sauce speaks for itself. Â I enjoy many of the other places and even venture out for Rib America to get my BBQ on, but time and time again, I go back to City BBQ for the same reason. Â It is comfort food that I would make or take my family and friends to at a reasonable price.
Can wait for the City Barbeque coming to Avon, IN soon.
I've been back for the brisket, which is tender, and smokey. Brisket versus pulled pork - order what you prefer as both are good. I've had the beans several times and like them. They have hush puppies as a side, which is unusual. They have good natural cut french fries and they're available with bacon and cheese. My son had the smoked sausage sandwich and he loved it - you can get a 1/4 or 1/2 pound of sausage.
Beer selection includes several Sun King varieties and Shiner Bock. I generally prefer the local beers, but I have an unnatural affection for Shiner Bock and Shiner pairs perfectly with barbeque.
They have more sauces that I initially realized - regular, sweet, spicy, mustard, and carolina. The first three are thick and seem molasses based to me. I like the mustard sauce, which is not widely available in the midwest. The carolina is vinegar based and spicier than most.
I checked out Yelp reviews before we went in and was hopeful! But that optimism waivered when we learned they had run out of pork...and then 86'd the smashed potatoes after the people in front of us ordered. But still - the food looked good! I got a pulled chicken sandwich and green beans. My second bite had a bone in it. Sifting through the remaining pulled chicken I found a large piece of cartilage. Ick. The green beans were flavorless. My husband had the ribs which he said were very dry and fatty... Overall, disappointing and can't recommend it.
Review Source:Without question the worst ribs I've ever had. Dry meat, boring sauce, chunks of bone and gristle in almost every bite. This is my 2nd chance visit. Last time I had the pulled pork and it was nothing special so I thought I'd give the place another chance. Never again. Almost 20 bucks for awful food. Run away. Bird flu is more appetizing than City Barbeque
Review Source:Great BBQ and people serving it. I often go for the $1 rib bone day on Tuesdays. The Corn pudding is my fav side dish. Best around and heavy on portion.
Pleasant atmosphere with 2 flat screen TVs. BBQ tastes and is smokey. I like the Carolina pulled pork which is topped with slaw.
Any time you get a dinner you get texas toast that is very good. The BBQ Chicken is a good quality and large size from a local farm. I prefer the white meat. Excellent seasonal chili with brisket as the meat.
Hot tip on the sauce: Go to the service bar and get it hot in a cup and don't use the cold sauce in bottles on the table.
Overall a great experience, many happy eaters around you. I go quite often after work.
Rolled in at an off peak time, was greeted by what I think was the manager. What a nice dude. He offered us some samples. I had my mind set on the chicken, which I usually order for my first visit to a new (to me) bbq joint. The brisket sample made me change my mind. I ordered the 1/2lb brisket sandwhich, with sides of the green beans and mac n cheese. The sandwhich was AWESOME! Huge. I had a few chunks of brisket on their own, then I doused the rest with their sauce (the regular stuff). The sauce..hmm, Ive had better, but it isnt horrible. The meat was delicious though. I will try the chicken next. A member of our group ordered a half a bird and it looked fan-tabulous. The green beans were GREAT, and the mac n cheese was an easy four out of five stars. I most def look forward to trying more on the menu next time I am in town. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and they have DIET MT DEW on tap! HELL YEAH!
Review Source:You could do better overall, by spending your time elsewhere if you're on the hunt for good barbeque. I wasn't a fan of either the brisket or the pulled pork sandwiches. Their BBQ sauces seem to be lacking too. Also, the restaurant itself is freezing and my fresh cut fries were almost cold right away. Boo!
Perhaps, I am just not a fan of Carolina style BBQ. Not sure if it's worth another trip, although they do serve Sun King. And the photograph of their ribs sure looked tasty. Still, my quest for solid BBQ in Indy will continue...
Delicious! Had the lunch special 1/4 pound sandwich w/ 2 sides.
The NC Pulled Pork was terrific. The meat had great flavor, and I enjoyed trying out their different BBQ sauces at the table.
My sides were Fries and Corn Pudding. The corn pudding was excellent, but the fries weren't anything spectacular. My dining companion had the Baked Beans. I definitely recommend those.
I loved the half chicken here! Â It's so tender, it puts pictures of mothers and newborns to shame! Â I'm not as big of a fan of the sauces, but it's a regional bbq preference.
I loved the cole slaw. Â I don't even usually like cole slaw, but happened to try it from my date's plate. Â It tasted like summertime epitomized- fresh crisp, yummy.
I thought the food came pretty quickly & everyone was friendly. Â No complaints here!
I hate writing negative reviews. But I had an atrocious experience that 2 months later I am still pissed off about so whadaya gonna do. So.
I love bbq. I have so many favorites around the country from Hill Country to NYC but I also adore Jack Stack in Kansas City and I've given repeat business to local GT Souths, Parky's Smokehouse, Judge's, Squealers, I can even make do with chains that fake the smoke-- like Famous Daves. I took the time to review and appreciate Hanks Briskets on Yelp. just for frame of reference.
Okay. So--- City Barbeque is a suburban family type restaurant that offers NOTHING to anyone into 'cue. Again I have nothing against chains-- I have something against this one. Â
Got the City Sampler and added a couple ribs on the side.
Their brisket sucks. Literally almost didn't exist. Â it was all in dry-yet-fatty crumbles! Â if that is possible! Â Crumbles! Â It was so, so, awful. the flavor was what you would expect from crumbles-- sawdust. The absolute worst "brisket" of my life.
Turkey- DRY.
Ribs-- terribly skinny and anemic yet tough and hard to pull off the bone. how wrong is that?!
Sausage-- like an over-salted hot dog. Â
Sauce-- you're much better off buying Sweet Baby Rays at the store.
Speaking of store, baked beans tasted like out of a can w a pail of sugar dumped in and some aforementioned brisket crumbs for, i dunno, texture? Â certainly not flavor.
Mac n cheese was actually semi-edible--- but could have used a minute in the microwave.
As I said I still can't shake off my experience and no one will ever be able to force me to eat here again. I felt robbed and abused. I'd rather donate my money to the Ronald's Kids Foundation at McDs next door instead. Â I apologize to all the other bbq places in this town that I could have hit up that unfortunate day instead. Â I'm not giving this place any more words in this review.
The other night, my husband and I had one of those nights where we couldn't decide what we wanted to eat. Nothing sounded particularly good. I was in the mood for some sort of comfort food.
We ended up at City Barbeque. This was our second visit. Our first visit was during their grand opening week, and honestly, I wasn't too terribly impressed. It seems that I just selected the wrong menu items during that first visit.
When you first enter City Barbeque, you order your food from a menu board and wait in line for it. In that sense isn't a traditional sit down type restaurant, which I expected it to be when I first went. The food comes out quickly, however, so you're not ever waiting long. (Even at their most busy, it was only like 5 minutes.) As you're waiting, you stand next to a row of bottled sodas that you can select from. There is also fountain soda, and their sweet tea and lemonade (which is really good lemonade!).
We did dine-in the first time we ate there, and the ladies working around us to clean off tables and whatnot were really pleasant and helpful. The restaurant was comfortable and clean and the decor was spot on for a BBQ joint. The place was hopping that night but like I said, I just wasn't feeling the food.
This time I selected the regular pulled pork sandwich combo with hush puppies and their fries (with cheese and bacon for 89 cents more!). The sandwich was awesome and I ate it mostly without sauce, the hush puppies were hush puppies, but the best part of my meal was definitely the HUGE portion of fries with cheese and bacon. The cheese was a little spicy without being like... nacho cheese. It just had a bit of a kick to it. As I said, the portion size was huge! I had my fill and was able to pass about 50% of them off to my husband to finish.
We had such a great experience here that night that we returned two nights later because we were craving the fries again!
City Barbeque is definitely worth taking a look. The prices are reasonable, and not all of the sides are fantastic (skip the potato salad!), but some are pretty great (get the fries with cheese and bacon!) All their BBQ is delicious, so far as I can tell.
As far as their desserts go, they rave about their "famous peach cobbler" and call it a favorite menu item. In my opinion, it was completely gross; flavorless, and greasy. Conversely, I really enjoyed their simple, somewhat plain banana pudding dessert.
This is great take-out comfort food!
Located in the southside of Indianapolis, City Barbeque is a new addition to the BBQ spots in this side of town. Â This place offers a different concept of BBQ restaurant - where you have to place your order at the counter, wait for your order and bring your food to the table (or you can have your friend or family member find the table first while you are waiting for the food). The service is fast and friendly.
We ordered a family pack for regular Pork Barbeque with 2 choices of side dish : Coleslaw and Gumbo. At the table we have 6 choices of BBQ sauces. The meal also comes with 4 corn muffins and 4 sandwich buns. The family pack is supposed to be enough for 2 adults and 2 children, but we found out the meat was only enough for 2 adults and 1 child, or 1 adult and 3 children. Thank goodness that we only had 1 child with us at the time, so the meal is enough for the three of us.
In summary, our pork BBQ tasted great, the gumbo was delicious and spicy enough for my taste, corn muffins were yummy, coleslaw was OK (I should have chosen another side dish instead of coleslaw). For $26 total - we had a great meal for lunch for 2 aduts and 1 child  with 2 large size drinks (free refills). I am glad that we found this place. We'll come back again next time. Yum-o! Watch out Smokey Bones, we probably won't visit you too often from now on... :-))
This place is AWESOME!!! Â My wife and I ate here and enjoyed every bite. Â We also liked the atmosphere with the blues music. Â I ordered a Half Slab Ribs Platter with two sides- corn pudding and baked beans w/ brisket. Â My wife ordered a Half Chicken Platter with two sides- baked beans w/ brisket and green beans w/ bacon. Â Each meal came with Texas Toast. Â Everything we ate was very delicious! Â The meat portions were LARGE!!! Â The staff was very friendly, even the Manager (Bill) introduced himself and greeted us. Â By the time we finished our meals, we were too full to eat the Triple Chocolate Cake that we ordered (big enough for the both of us to share) so we took it home. Â It was so delicious we were in chocolate heaven! Â We also found out that City Barbeque donates 10% of pre-tax profits to charities and non-profit organizations. Â We were so impressed with our first visit that we will definitely go back again.
Review Source:So my wife and I stopped in here tonight to try the new place out. When we got inside we were not greeted by any of the employee's, I had to stop a clueless employee to ask her if we needed to seat ourselves or what, this being a new place and all. So clueless young lady showed us where to order our food and that was kind of a surprise, I figured this would of been more of a waited on kind of place not a help yourself place, for the price. While we ordered our food the young ladies working the counter were too interested in each other and what they were going to do with their paychecks than paying attention to us. I asked where we pick up our food she responded "down there", ok? Just my luck I wasn't paying attention to the employee I asked, once we got "down there", if we were in the right spot to wait on our food, it was the clueless young girl, noooooooooooo!!! She just mumbled something, than said yes...ok?...this is a new place, come on employee's, we've never been here!!! To make this long story short, we did however enjoy the food and atmosphere so my three stars go to that. Just train your clueless employee's a little better, PLEASE!!!
