Me and my wife went for a Lunch buffet on 03/09/2013. We reached there at 2:25 pm and Lunch time is till 3:00 pm. On buffet counter few of dishes were empty thus my wife specifically asked the person on the counter (He is the person with a mustache) whether you will refill the dishes or not. Otherwise there was no point in sitting. He said you people sit and he is going to refill it. We started with some starters and other things. In the mean time we reminded him 3 times to refill the dishes. Finally at 2:55 pm my wife again said we are waiting for a particular dish to refill since beginning. That pathetic rude person rudely said its close to 3:00 (closing time) and you are waiting???. When I asked that you should be apologetic  rather than rude then he said in a warning tone that he is hasn't shown his rude side till now.
Review Source:I have to revise my previous review to five stars because i finally made it here for dinner. I ordered dhal tarka and asked them to make it spicy along with an order of roti. Absolutely perfect and they were able to get me in and out of the restaurant quickly in order to make a flight. Also, ive noticed that they switch up their lunch buffet frequently and have added a potato and roasted eggplant dish that is so good that I am shocked it is buffet food.
Review Source:In a sea of chain restaurants on the Southside there are only 3 local places I would recommend. Â This is one of them. Â The Clay Oven is not perfect by an means. Â They struggle with service and take out food is often very heavy on the sauce to meat ratio. Â You have to be specific when ordering over the phone. Â I have never eaten from the buffet but the food off the menu is solid. It is consistently very good and well balanced and some of the best Indian I have had in Indiana.
Review Source:This is one of the better Indian places on the southside for those who do not want to drive all the way to Lafayette Road or Carmel to have a lunch buffet.
I'll give 4 stars for the flavor but it is a bit expensive when it comes to overall choice in the lunch buffet. I did a takeout once - 2 curries and 2 Naans - and it cost me $30 which I find steep.
I FINALLY got over to the new(ish) Clay Oven Indian restaurant on Indy's southside/Greenwood area. This place has been in my "bookmarks" for way too long.
I liked the ambience - bright and cheery and very clean. But, I didn't care for the way our group was seated on the same side of the restaurant as all of the other patrons, all in booths right next to each other, while the other side of the restaurant was completely empty. Hey guys, the dining room isn't that big - space us out a little bit!
The service, 2 gentlemen that definitely were in no hurry, was spotty at first but then a woman server showed up and darn-it if things didn't start running more efficiently. This was on a Saturday early afternoon and there was a lunch buffet available for $8.95 but since I abhor buffets I chose to order off the menu.
The menu is huge. Monstrously huge. I was a little overwhelmed but decided that the  lamb & eggplant ($13.95) served Punjabi style with chef's special sauce was singing-out to me. And, I really enjoyed it. The lamb chunks in the tasty sauce were really tender. The presentation was nice, it was served in a brass-looking soup tureen but I really feel that the price was way too steep for the serving portion size.
I ordered it at a Medium heat level which was just right. I like really hot food but I've made the mistake too often of ordering Indian food HOT and the combination of rich Indian spices and the molten lava heat level creates a ticking time bomb in my gut (no further explanation should be required.)
My hubs ordered the tandoori mixed grill ($14.95) at the HOT level which scared me. When they brought that fiery hot platter to our table I went into a coughing spasm the entire time it was sizzling away. But, once it cooled enough to eat the heat level was really pretty tolerable. This dish was really enjoyable, all of the different meats on the platter were perfectly cooked - even the shrimp which it seems like most restaurants ruin by overcooking.
The basmati rice that comes with all of the meals, which they refill as often as you like, was delicious. Rice is an important accompaniment of Indian food and they definitely know it.
I thought the mix basket of naan breads was ok but I've definitely had better naan.
I really loved the vegetable samosa appetizer which was probably the best I've had. The samosa turnovers were crispy and the filling of spiced potatoes & peas was creamy and delicious.
The appetizers that we ordered were served with 3 different small bowls: a cool & refreshing mint cilantro chutney, a tamarind sauce and some chopped onions that were in a spicy sauce but not hot spicy.
They have some beer & wine available. I was impressed with the beer selection because there were several more offerings other than the commonly found Kingfisher beer.
Again, the menu is huge - I counted 23 vegetarian entree selections alone.
I thought the overall dining experience was pretty good but their prices are too high. And, I know there's better Indian food in Indy but this place definitely doesn't disappoint.
I went for the Saturday lunch buffet and found the food lacking in depth and flavor. The service was also very poor.
I had the lunch buffet and the naan that we were promised at the beginning of our meal never came until the very end. Poor show. It was busy, but it seemed like the wait staff just sort of forgot us. Beyond that, the food was just not that good.
I've heard it's a very different experience off the a la carte menu, so if I ever go back, I'll do that.
Like others have said, I wish there were a half-star option. This is a solid, clean and unassuming space that provides a really high-quality buffet spread with solid fare. Both sweet and savory dishes are offered with plenty of sides and chutneys. It is easy to find and the prices are excellent for the great food you get. This part of Indianapolis is almost totally bereft of decent lunch spots, so you should not waste any time and head straight to the Clay Oven.
Review Source:This place is just what the south side of Indianapolis was needing - an Indian restaurant with some soul. My friends and I are crazy for Indian food, and we are always on the lookout for something special.
The owner of The Clay Oven is an inspiration. He remembers his customers, and I have yet to visit when he wasn't there. He has always visited the table to ask if everything is okay. He graciously answers any questions that you might have about the food.
I have been several times for the lunch buffet. Always hot and flavorful. They have naan bread, but also a different type, and it is amazing. The puddings are creamy and delicious. The carrot pudding is so very good! The butter chicken is the best I have ever had.
I will visit one evening for dinner.
Some other Indian restaurants have opened in this area with a bang, and then over time fell into a rut with lackluster buffet offerings that get cold from not being properly tended. You just know that the owner here will never let that happen to this little gem.
Never would you think as you are standing outside of the door of this tiny place in a strip mall, that you would find such of a jewel upon opening the door. The aroma, and the rich colors and atmosphere will transport you to a wonderful experience.
Really could have gone for that 5th star if I hadn't been wowed by the absolute, "as good as it gets" Indian food while living in NYC for so many years. Â For Indianapolis, this place is as good as I've had anywhere in the city. Â
The owners moved here from Atlanta and really know how to balance fresh ingredients with exotic Indian spices, yum!. Â I'm happy they came to my neighborhood. Â I can pop over anytime I get a craving for chicken tikka masala, garlic nan (out of this world) and basmati rice w/Dal. Â Save room for the kheer, (rice pudding w/ rose water). Â Although your cravings will be satisfied, I never walk away feeling that awful, "stuffed" feeling by adding desert. Â That's an art.
