Went last weekend to see Ryan Hamilton. He gets 5 stars.
Your experience here and your rating will suck if you go see a comedian that sucks. Youtube the headliner comedian first. Don't watch too many clips or you might end up hearing the same routine. 1 clip is enough for me to know if they are my "type".
Now on to the business:
The place is nice, chairs are comfy, and bathrooms are immaculate.
In addition to tickets, there is a 2 item minimum purchase per person. Cheapest items on the menu are pop/water at $4.50ish each. This means if you spend about $25 on 2 tickets you will spend AT LEAST $18 more to cover the 4 items required (plus tip).
We are vacationing in CO and didn't know this until after we had paid, sat down, and read the notice on the menu. We went to Texas De Brazil right before the show. It's a pricy buffet type of place (see my review) and we were not hungry/thirsty.
The guy at the front didn't really care. I mean, I know a rule is a rule, but we genuinely could not squeeze in a drop of water into our system. Our id's are from out of state. He could have been more understanding.
With that said, if I was a local I'd love to do a dinner and show combo any day over going to a movie.
Our comedian was awesome. We laughed so hard our faces hurt. My husband and I both feel like this was the highlight of our trip to Denver. Worth the drive to see the right comedian.
The people who opened for him also got some good laughs out of us.
TIP: get there 20 mins. before the show.
We attended a show here recently. Apparently if you eat at Lucy (upstairs) prior to a show, you get VIP seating and don't have to wait in line. We arrived fairly early and I was surprised to see that there was already a line forming. The venue itself is ok. I could see and hear the show well, but people were really crammed close together. There is a 2 item/person minimum during the show (can be drinks or food). I don't remember seeing anything on the menu for under $10, so be prepared to spend an extra $20+/person.
Review Source:Went here with some friends to see Dave Attell this past weekend who is by far one of my favorite comedians. Â Was really excited to have a great night but that was ruined really quick by the management. Â In the middle of one of the opening acts, my friend was tapped on the shoulder and told to "keep it down". Â Never in my life did I think laughing in a comedy club was a crime, but apparently comedy works south does. Â This is especially disturbing given the fact at other shows I have been to there had hecklers and not a single thing was done about it. Â Well next, 15 minutes into Dave's bit, my friend got a second tap on the shoulder and was escorted into the lobby and asked to leave, again for being to loud (Which wasn't the case at all). Â If this was true the whole place should have been asked to leave because no one was really louder than anyone else. Â
In short, if you want to spend good money to go see a comedian you really like and then get a night of supposed fun ruined by management...this is the place for you!
This place was terrible, I was shocked.
First off, I felt like I was being scammed the whole time. We go to check in and there is a cheesy "employee" (I mean salesman) standing right there next to the check in line trying to get you (and everyone before and after you... you get to watch his game like 5 times before you get to the counter) upstairs to their restaurant. It reminds me of the taxi/vacation salesmen at a Mexican airport trying to sell you on activities. I guess if you eat there before the show you get preferred seating to the show and "don't have to stand in the cattle call line" direct quote, like everyone else. We went upstairs and it was a really creepy place. No music. Cramped, humid and hot. Smelled like Chef Boyardee. No way. I don't want to have to buy something else to get seats that I already paid for.
Second scam: they make you line up to be seated in this weird 90s decorated bar, essentially saying hey, while you're waiting, why don't you buy a drink in this bar that you would never actually go to if you had a choice... the design bottlenecked you in there and you didn't have anywhere else to wait. Not subtle.
3rd scam: two MANDATORY purchases of food or drink. Tickets were $30. Then drinks start at $8. So really you are paying $50+ per person. Yes, this is advertised up front, but it still makes you feel like you're somewhere seedy that requires minimum purchases... Like a strip club. And what if you don't want alcohol or unhealthy bar food? You're essentially wasting money on something you don't want/need.
That being said the poor waitresses tried to be nice while they served you drinks in seating that resembled airline seats; they were so cramped together that your knees touched the people in front of you. And in a line. With a mini table mashed in between. Ridiculous. I'd never come here again & would not recommend it at all.
Great place. It's been fun every time I've been there. Everyone is friendly and helpful. I prefer the Comedy Works South. Parking is easy and they have a nice restaurant Lucys upstairs. Â Great laughs and I like the headliners they have here. All the comedians were funny. Laughing is good for the soul!
Review Source:The menu at this location is different from the Comedy Works downtown. I like the White Gummy Bear cocktail, Miami Vice frozen cocktail and Gorgonzola waffle fries. Overall the place is nice and the waitstaff is great.
They also raise funds for school kids at this Comedy Works & I think that's marvelous.
I am a fan because we love stand-up comedy, and this place brings in great headliners and Landmark is a great place. I am willing to overlook all its flaws, mentioned by many reviewers: overpriced (aren't the tickets expensive enough not to require two drinks?), odd seating system (standing in line outside in the cold having already purchased tickets), unstable tables (should have been solved by now). I thought the booths in the back would be the best seating in the house, but besides being comfy and private, people sitting on the sides got major pain in their necks. Their drinks have improved lately though, and the waitstaff is reasonably efficient and pleasant. I know I will be back for some laughs!
Review Source:My fiance and I went to Comedy Works South this past Friday night to see John Oliver. The opening act (Troy Walker) was excellent so I must commend Comedy Works for getting such a talented local comedian to open for Oliver.
However, actually getting to our seats was a bit of a mess. We actually saw and heard the manager (I assume) yelling at his staff from the stairs about how they were getting people to their seats. While the staff wasn't doing a great job, the manager yelling at his staff like that was awkward and didn't really seem to have any effect.
Also, I understand why there is a 2 drink minimum but with ticket prices and everything, it was a very expensive evening out. As much as my fiance and I would love to attend more stand-up shows, $10 for a whiskey on the rocks is ridiculously steep. (It's DTC, not NYC.) Also, the food was really expensive and of mediocre quality. I'd like to note that I had to ask for a glass of water 3 times before finally receiving a plastic cup of room temperature water. So you drop $9 for a margarita but can't even get an actual glass of ice water? Someone explain that one to me!
The layout of club is wonderful even if it is a bit cramped. The management needs to get some processes/systems in place to make seating people easier. It might also be beneficial to offer better quality food (if you're going to charge so much for it).
Mild chaos getting in. Â Kind of confusing and no one seemed really in charge. Went with a group of 5 and they sat us in a line, like for a firing squad. Â Way cramped. I literally had to sync up and alternate my drinking with the stranger next to me so we didn't knock each others drink over. Â That's one way to to pace yourself, I guess. Â
And I don't know if this is the club's fault, but the random heckling was unreal at this location. Â Maybe it was the audience that the act attracted - Jay Mohr(s). Â But drunk loud mouths seemed strategically placed throughout the room. Â Just when one would shut up, another would arise from across the room. Â It was like meathead whack-a-mole. Â Plus, guys were randomly shouting out what county they were from. Â Really? Â What is that?! Â I felt bad for Jay as he struggled to just get jokes out without interruption. Â But he was gracious and in essence told them to shut up. Â But it was a bad showing for Denver. Â But I will give this location another shot, with another act, probably at an earlier time. Â Because ARAPAHOE COUNTY will be in the hizzouse!!!
I went here to see one of my favorite comedians, Bob Marley (yep, he shares his name with a certain reggae singer). It was my first visit to Comedy Works, and the only other major comedy club I've been to in Denver was the Improv.
I have to say, I highly favor Comedy Works. The first thing to know is that if you eat at Lucy's, the attached restaurant, you get seated in the first 6 rows and don't have to wait in line for anything-you'll be escorted right to your seats.
The layout of the club is great-not too big, and from what I gathered, there are good views everywhere. The stage is bigger than at the Improv, which helps I think-it means the performers move around more so everybody gets a better view.
There's a 2 item minimum in the showroom (food or drink) and the drink prices get steep, but I'll admit they're really good, and the strength actually meets the price. The service is certainly a LOT better than the Improv, where you won't see your waitress for 30 minutes at a time.
The MC was a hoot and I'm not sure if he's the regular host, but he got the show off right and had the crowd going right away-he was also interactive in a fun but not mean way. If he wasn't the permanent host, he should be!
I had a great time at Comedy Works-I'm hoping another comedian I love comes through, so I can make it again!
Well, the bathrooms certainly smell better than the downtown location.
I knew of the location from an UYE prior, so I was familiar with the underground parking lot down the block. The venue itself reminds me The Soiled Dove Underground - same layout (good.) I arrived a little early, to get a decent seat; exchanged the computer printout for a ticket at the box office.
The staff was standing in a cluster, I just waltzed on by. Then I went into the theatre and questioned another employee, what seats where available. That employee told me I had to go back outside and find someone to seat me. I went back out and stood in line for a short period of time and turned in my ticket and then was escorted back in to find seats. It was a little disorganized to say the least.
$20 ish for two Bud Lights and two coffees. Yikes! I can see paying $5-$6 for a bottled beer in a comedy club but $10 for two coffees (not Starbucks!) is ridic.
I went to see Ralphie May. Opening act (?) was a little weak but RM had new material, so it was all good.
Cocktail waitress was fine. I like this venue.
Mapquest if you have never been. No signage for this shopping/dining district off Quebec. I go lost the 1st time.
I came here for the first time on a whim last week to see my all-time favorite comedian, Brian Regan. I was SO stoked to see him in a club rather than in a giant venue like the Wells Fargo Theater. However, Mr. Regan was about the only good thing about this theater.
You're basically herded like cattle when waiting for a show here. Everyone is crammed into the tiny bar area and told to wait until their respective letter is called. We waited in here for about 30 minutes, and had a table since we were there so early. It was incredibly uncomfortable after a while, though, as the people crammed in and personal space got more and more precious.
I feel that the owners of this place are ONLY interested in making as much money as possible from each and every person that comes in. They have a two item minimum in the dining room, and crazy prices on everything. They also pack you in like sardines with wobbly tables that could take a tumble at the slightest touch. After being used to Improv Comedy Club in Stapleton, this place was quite the downer. I will definitely not return unless someone as awesome as Brian Regan is doing a show here.
I like the downtown location better.
Mainly because I like the fact that when I get to the downtown location early, I get good seats. Whereas here, I get to a show early, and still get crap seats because I didn't eat at their overpriced restaurant. I'm also not a fan of the snooty people that come here. We're all here to have a good time, so stop acting like you're better than everyone else for one night. The food and service is fine. Parking sucks, but it's free if you can find it.
The downtown location is much more welcoming, comfortable, and fun.
BRIAN REGAN - 10 stars
Comedy Works South - perfect venue for great comedians! Â Not too big, not too small.
First time at Comedy Works South at the 7:00 show Thursday night; sounds like they got their logistics sorted out from Wednesday night.
People in line around me seemed so psyched for Regan the line didn't matter. Â It moved at a reasonable pace and our online reservation translated swiftly. Â
We were shown to an elevated booth for the four of us which was great viewing even tho we were right against the wall on the first floor.
Terrific waitress - "Joy" busted her chops to get us what we asked for. Â
Parking is free at the garage around the corner from the Club but you'd better add about 10 minutes to clear that hurdle.
Brian's opening act JOE BOLSTER - watch for him. Â The man had thyroid cancer - and he made us laugh - that's talent!
Regan - never a disappointment - no trash talk, no smut - just intelligent humor.
WORST LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT EVER! 7 of us were in the house to see Brian Regan (WHO WAS GREAT!) and the staff was a nightmare. There was no clear manager/person in charge. Guests were funneled into the small lobby for over an hour - no stanchion, no order, just chaos -- and wait for it, NO STAFF to assist!
A blonde woman was in the box office staring into space. There were no announcements, nothing. After an hour, a ticket-taker appeared and blamed the talent for running over in the early show (?), yet there was no attempt to bring order to the surly crowd NOR move people into the theater.
We got to our seats a full hour AFTER our show was to have started. There was no mention by management or talent as to why this chaos existed.
WOW. It would seem the comedy club's job is to move people from point A (door) to point B (seat) every night, with repetition. Different show every night, same process. Same order, no chaos...
EPIC FAIL - never going back and will be SURE to share. WOW.
This place is ok if you get a good seat. We were in the back row this time when we saw Chris TItus (who was outstanding) and we were crowded in ridiculously - it made coach on a United flight feel luxurious.
I read a few reviews commenting on the crowd this place attracts and I experienced this slovenly group up close in our over crowded cattle pen of a seat section. The very large woman and date sitting next to me, literarily squeezing over into my seat, ordered two plates of sliders and home fries IN ADDITION TO a plate of onion rings. Once they polished all of this off I was treated to a lovely belch. No "excuse me," and demure covering of the mouth; just put it out there as it this was perfectly fine.
Earlier that evening my husband tried to make a dinner reservation at Lucy's. The person who answered the phone said, "No way that is going to happen," following my husband's inquiry. Charming.
We love comedy and we would go more often, as they do attract good talent, but the club is managed so poorly it keeps us away. I guess you can't help it if you attract buffoons in your audience who overeat and have poor manners. You can control how the staff treats paying customers and how and where you seat them.
I had two business meetings at Lucys this week. Â One for breakfast and one for lunch. Â The atmosphere was perfect. Â The room is lovely and the ambiance was sedate. Â Both meals were spectacular! Â For breakfast I had the Lucita Burita. Â It was cooked perfectly with the right amount of kick. At lunch I had the Cobb Salad. Â The Cobb Salad was delicious!! Â The freshly made Blue Cheese dressing was scrumptious! Â
For business or pleasure Lucys is the place for me and my associates!
I went to see Tracy Morgan here a week or so back with a group of ladies and the confrontation we had with the staff was honestly scary.
The general manager of this place, Jeff, literally screamed in the face of a friend of mine's in a frightening, threatening, and obscene way.
Since when does laughing during at a comedy show warrant a terrifying, borderline violent, confrontation?
When I went to speak with another manager, Ryan, about the situation, he was extremely rude to me as well.
I don't even know what the show was like because I was so upset about being treated so poorly.
This place will ultimately fail because they treat their customers so poorly and it's truly unfortunate because they have some very talented people come through there.
The Good:
Surpizingly good talent and surprise appearance by Last Comic Standing winner Josh Blue, it clean, the seating is comfortablke although a tiny bit cramped and getting and getting seated was a breeze.
The Bad:
Parking is atrocious, and the app menu is small, only four items, most of which are variations on french fries. I ordered the  Jalapeno poppers and they were not available. How can that happen?? They come in big frozen bags. I ordered when I first arrived. So 25% of the menu was unavialable. Also, the drink service was VERY slow.
I'd go back, but I'll make sure to eatin advance next time.
Look, this won't be an entirely fair review, I'll just state that up front. Â The venue is nice, the decor fine, the servers were fine. Â But I'm not sure I've ever seen a show with a more ignorant and unsophisticated crowd. Â We just saw Ben Bailey and I couldn't be more embarrassed to have been in that audience. Â Constant interruptions by multiple drunken meat-heads in Ed Hardy shirts. Â if that's what the 'burbs have in store, then I'm not buying. Â I'll go downtown instead.
And really, this is a larger indictment of the staff. Â This should have been handled swiftly. Â Multiple people each interrupted multiple times...inexcusable from management and staff.
What a nice venue! Â No matter where you sit, you can get a decent view of the stage and it's small enough that there's an intimate feel. Â My only complaints are that the seats were packed in pretty close (guess they want you to get to know your neighbors!) and the drinks are expensive (most around $10). Â That said though, my drinks were delicious (especially the chocolate martini!) and the entertainment was certainly worth the cost.
Went to see Kathleen Madigan and she is hilarious! Â I expected that, but was pleasantly surprised that both the MC and the feature act were also laugh-out-loud funny.
There is a restaurant attached (Lucy). Â If you eat there, you get priority seating in the first 6 rows at the show. Â We tried to make reservations, but the restaurant was already full. Â Might give it a try next time though and plan further in advance.
I haven't been to the downtown location, but love that this one is fairly close to home. Â And, the parking is free and there are lots of restaurants in walking distance. Â I would definitely come to Comedy Works again. Â Definitely a fun night!
My other half received a free ticket for his birthday and discounted tickets for anyone else he wanted to come along. So we only spent $10 on tickets. It was my first time seeing a comedy show at Comedy Works.
I really enjoyed the show. The comic were hilarious and I am certain the alcohol had nothing to do with that. There is a two item minimum and we unfortunately had not eaten before we went. So after an appetizer, two entrees and two drinks apiece the tab was almost $100.
There are some unique bars in the area and parking is free. The seating was a little cramped for my liking. I felt as if I was in the lady's bubble who was sitting next to me. I will likely see a show here again in the future. I will just make sure I eat before I go! I could not imagine the cost if we would have paid full price for two tickets.
I can agree with Jason J. when he says it's hard to rate Comedy club without rating the act. We went to go see Jeremy Hotz at the 9:45 showing.
The venue is great. We were seated pretty close to the front with a great view of the stage. The food was pretty good, we had the Banana's Foster and the Chocolate Cake, both great for a Comedy Club.
We both had a Vodka Sherbert type drink that was very good.
Jeremy Hotz was great and totally worth the drive. Can't wait to see who I come to see next.
There are two Comedy Works locations in the Denver area, and I think that this one is by far the better of the two. It's in Landmark Village in DTC which I think is a pretty nice area, so I usually feel safe being there at night. I love the acts that go through (just saw Bob Saget), and if you eat at the adjacent restaurant (Lucy) you can get preferred seating in the first few rows. So it makes for a great dinner and show night. Tickets usually run around $30 a piece for headliner shows, plus you have to buy two items per person in the show room (drinks or food). There's a balcony in the show room, so they can really pack quite a few people in there, but it's a good room so you can see and hear from anywhere in there. My company actually rents out the space for our All Hands meetings, so I'm quite familiar with it.
If you have the choice between the Downtown and South locations, I would say to choose this one hands down. I go there anytime there's a good act coming through.
I'm a word: pretentious.
The prices, the people, the acts... the wait staff.
It is absolutely RIDICULOUS how much of the seating is blocked off for people that are willing to pay $20 for a burger at "Lucy". I'm so glad I could sit towards the back of the venue, even though I was one of the first people standing in line... because I refused to pay for over-priced food AND drinks.
If you are a guy having your mid-life crisis and trying to impress a 20 something this is probably your kind of joint.
I attended the Saturday May 20th showing of Jay Mohr and while Jay was great it was the sitting that was a joke. I have no idea how I got stuck in the back row sitting on a bar stool pretty much on the lap of another guy while getting to the show 30 minutes early while there were open seats every where.
I sure hope somebody from Comedy Works reads this post as I am pretty pissed that I spent over $100 for tickets and drinks and have to sit on a guys lap in the back row. If I do happen to go there again, I will make it a point I do not get screwed like that again. If you would take one or two seats out of that row people could enjoy themselves instead of being like a sardine in a can which just makes a show unenjoyable.
I love this place. I think its more cozy than the downtown spot just cuz bleacher benches are so 1980. Â This place has actual tables and chairs for your toosh enjoyment. Â Its a high ceiling and that gives you a feeling of openness.
I am always laughing my butt of no matter who is there. Whether its a famous headliner, local comics or amateur night. Â Comedy is truly an art and any place that gives a stage to such is a place for me!
I find the service in the lounges here sucks. Last time I went to the bar the bartender never did offer me a drink, forgot all requests like mustard and some lady's salad. He really looked like he was on that Denver Medical Medicine 420 ya know what I'm saying!? Â Come on dude get well soon. Â Another time the bartender was good but they're set up made no sense, like he had no spoons or small plates behind the bar and had to run all the way to the kitchen while super busy.
I also was sad to wait for my salad inside the show till the headliner was almost done- its a salad!
But that aside do get there early and get a middle seat and I never say sitting up front at a comedy show is wise so again, front middle!
This place can be pricey if you see a famous dude but seriously the non famous ones are awesome and they often run reduced or discounted tickets. There is a two drink minimum so yeah even if you dont partake of the moonshine type drinks there is always two cokes you could have and that would count or a food item counts too!
I LOVE LAUGHING SO THIS IS FUN FOR ME!
We had a terrible time at this venue. We saw Norm McDonald who we love! There was an obnoxious girl sitting in front of us talking very loudly the through the whole show. Myself and two other couples complained to the waitresses. They just nodded and then walked away. No one would say anything to her and her friends because they kept buying drinks. None of the people around us could hear the show, it was terrible.
The staff was terrible and we spent a lot of money for a very disappointing time. We have not gone back sense (this happened last year) and we tell everyone we know not to go here. The location downtown is so much better. The staff is friendly and helpful, the drinks are still expensive but that is expected. The atmosphere is way better and there are plenty of places to go before for food and after for drinks or dancing or both.
It's a comedy venue in suburbia. Free parking - yeah, better seating than downtown - yeah, 2 dink min - expected at comedy works, but menu - is non-existent.
I go to comedy works quite a bit to support one of my up and coming friends, but a $20 night each time just for drinks gets to be a little much.
Staff is so so in this location, much friendlier downtown. Â
Food choices really got my goat - if i'm going to do overpriced for a show i want a drink and snack - the menu here was less than a page, and nothing that wasn't fried nor even snacky... sigh. How could some place with a real kitchen and expensive restaurant attached not have good food selection?
I would only go here on a weeknight after work, i would never make the treck from my house to here on a weekend.
I've been here twice now. Â In comparison to The Comedy Works downtown, this one is MUCH better. Â Parking is free, the chairs are much more comfortable and seem to be more padded, you're not packed in as tightly and there is more leg room.
On the down side, the two drink minimum is still absolute crap. Â The mixed drinks are about $8 or $9 a piece, beer is around $5 or $6 and even a soda is around $5... RIDICULOUS! Â The one thing that really annoyed me about last night was our waitress was extremely slow. Â She didn't even come around for my 2nd drink order until last call. Â When I told her I didn't want anything she was super bitchy about the 2 drink rule so I had to suck down an ice cold coke and got a slight case of brain freeze at the end of the show just because of this stupid rule and because this slow waitress couldn't get moving fast enough to get my second drink order in a more timely manner.... ugh. Â Iriitating.
Overall, besides the idiot waitress, the show was awesome and we had a great time! Â We went to see Bobby Collins and Kathleen Madigan showed up for a surprise set right before Bobby went on. Â It was absolutely fantastic! Â In the future, I will definitely be weighing my options on shows based on which location they're at. Â Screw the downtown location. Â I'd rather spend a night at the Landmark location.
In the four times I have visited this Comedy Works I have not been disappointed in the slightest. Â Much like almost every adult beverage serving establishment in Denver their drinks are a little bit on the spendy side. Â Frankly though the two drink minimum required here is well worth the price of the show you will encounter. Â Without question the local comedians and the occasional Joe Rogan cameo appearance will give you a knee slapping experience. Â
The staff here has been nothing short of top shelf and if I have my choice between this Comedy Works or the Downtown location, I will always pick this spot.
Stay rad South Comedy Works location!
This is a really nice venue & has way better parking than the downtown location. But, just like the downtown comedy works, it is extremely overpriced. While they do draw in some big names that are worth paying to see, the $25+ per ticket price to see the local no-name comedians is a little ridiculous and may explain why half of the seats are empty for the late night show (usually more popular than the early show).
That being said, I have to admit, the local no-names that they do draw in are quite funny. This is not your typical open mic night type of place. They do a really fantastic job of screening and pairing.
This place still has the antiquated 2 drink minimum that similar comedy clubs like The Improv have eliminated.
But, we caught a deal where we got free tickets to the show if we had dinner at Lucy, their upscale restaurant. What really surprised us is that even though we were getting in for free, they totally treated us like VIPs. We got preferred seating and a very sweet hostess that escorted our group around.
So, as you can tell, I have very mixed feelings about this place. I definitely prefer The Improv. But, if I caught another deal like this last time, I would probably find myself back at Comedy Works.
