Don Pablo's food has been a favorite our my husband and mine. We love their cheese queso sauce and their grilled chicken dinners. What we are frustrated with is their awful service! We continually have bad servers there. The last dinner we had with our exchange student we took her to Don Pablo's because that was her favorite food while she was visiting. It was the absolute worst service I had ever had. I even complained to the manager and his response was we aren't really busy on Memorial Day so we are a little short staffed. They weren't busy at all! There was about six families in the whole place! We would eat here much more often if the service was better. Such a disappointment.
Review Source:Ok, Â If you're looking for authentic Mexican food, this should probably not be your first stop. Â However, what you fill find here is some of the tastiest, freshest, and best seasoned "Mexiclose" food. Â Don Pablo's is roomy, atmospheric, and fun inside. Â If you're lucky enough to get a booth, they're big enough to lie down on and fall asleep after you've consumed one of their enormous entrees. Â The tables toward the center of the restaurant are a bit rickety and are chairs are chiropractic nightmares, but you'll forget about it completely once you receive your piping hot chips and flavorful salsa. Â
We usually order the dip sampler, which comes with four nicely-sized bowls of Queso, Queso Blanco, Guacamole, and Prairie Fire Bean Dip. Â Due to the fact these dips are absolutely delicious and are served with tortillas so fresh you can watch them being made and placed on your plate, the three of us usually scarf them down in no time flat.
Usually we follow it up with Fajita Trios, which is a generous amount of sizzling steak, chicken, and shrimp with an entire plate of cold toppings and of course, more of the above-mentioned tortillas; not to mention a huge plateful of your choice of beans and rice. Â To die for.
Let's see - plate count at our table:
1 sizzling meat platter (x3 people)
1 topping plate (x3 people)
1 plate of sides (x3 people)
1 dip sampler platter (usually still hanging around cuz we use dips with our fajitas)
1 basket of chips
= 11 plates to show the world we are in fact gluttons
The waitstaff are very friendly and attentive despite the crowd. Â MiMi is the greatest waitress you will ever meet. Â She is super energetic and socialable. Â Request her. Â You will love her too. Â Don't be surprized if she takes a seat at your table and becomes a member of your dining family too.
Ugh. Really? This place gets a better score than Jalapeno's? That's just... wrong.
I didn't like this chain when I lived in Texas, and it only got worse when I took a chance and tried it after moving up here. The food is just... Seriously? You people enjoy this crap more?! I'm just flabbergasted. Then again, they do seem to live by the yankee-Mexican-code that I've discovered: MORE GREASE = MEXICAN.
No. Gross. And their margaritas are WEAK. I can make my own lemon juice, thank you.
Don Pablo's used to be THE Mexican restaurant back in the mid '90s. However, I'm afraid in ten years, it will follow the same path at Chi Chi's. For one, stop changing your menu every six months. Stick with what you do well. This place does have a few hits, but overall it's just average. The margaritas are good and a good price (the reason for three stars). Our last trip to this specific store: Our server was a tad slow and they weren't overly busy. I remember Friday nights with an hour wait. We got right in. That should tell you something.
Review Source:Greasy fake mexican food, but it's edible enough. Since more authentic places have come to NWI, I most likely will not go back to Don Pablos. Again, not horrible, but just what you would expect from fake mexican food (too much cheese and grease with hot sauces does not make it mexican food!). Â I did like their virgin daquiris quite a bit, though.
Review Source:For LUNCH, service is always friendly and quick. I order the same thing here every time and love it. Yeah it's cheap, so I over-compensate the tip. In fact, Jesse our server was awesome today. Here's what I order:
- $4.95 "endless bowl" of homemade tortilla soup
- Free yummy chips with personal salsa bowls for double dipping
- Free ice water with a side of lemon and lime slices (so we don't get scurvy)
"Excuse me, but can you seat a party of 12 within the next hour??"
"We should be able to..."
It was 6 o'clock on a Sunday night. Our party of twelve walked in and were seated immediately. The entire main floor was empty actually. The second floor was packed. That is where the TVs resided and the Colts were in the Playoffs. Remember, this is the Midwest and they take their sports seriously. Â I can always tell when I am flying back home to Indiana by the number of people on the plane wearing matching shirt AND pant sports gear.
The margaritas and food flowed freely and we had a great time. It's more Tex-Mex than authentic Mexican but I am not complaining. Everyone was happy with the food except for one, and the waiter remover her food from the bill. I tackled the "El Matador" dish just because I liked the name. I am aware that the last sentence translates into the the matador.... I don't know if the name was appropriate or just evenly randomly assigned. I imagine some white yuppies sitting in a boardroom randomly yelling out Spanish sounding words to name their dishes. Either way the food was great just too much. I easily left 30 percent of the food on the table. I guess it is better than not enough....
Good date spot, very lively, music played over speakers. Â May be better if they had live music. Two floors, main floor is for families, upstairs is an extended bar area. Â I sat upstairs, this server stunk, it was very obvious that our server was VERY high. Food wasn't the best, but OK for indiana. Portions are large, prices are decent. Chohula hot sauce is on every table**, very good. Mixed drinks weren't too good. Just stick to less complicated cocktails or beers.
