Overall everything we had for lunch was good. Â One annoying first impression that struck me the wrong way was the hostess was busy chatting at the end of the bar with the staff and we waited for about 5 minutes until she was done with her conversation. Â Only to come over to us and tell us you can sit anywhere. Â Thanks Swifty. Â Our server was very attentive and nice. Â I had the Cobb salad which was good, partner had California Roll which was also good.
Review Source:This place has spiraled from "nothing special" into the "retarded" column. The service was so bad one day at brunch, I had to get up and go have a talk with some kid who was the manager. I don't want to go into all the details of how stupid the staff is, but when the waitress comes over and tells you her name is "Destiny" that's an indication to get up and leave. Waitresses shouldn't give themselves stupid names like strippers. I can't understand how this place stays in business. They couldn't bring us a spoon -- three times I asked for a spoon.
Review Source:Solid beer selection (good number of crafts) and a really nice space upstairs for live music, with its own bar area. Â Crowd upstairs was a little more my age (downstairs was more like early-mid 20s, and the music kind of loud and techno-y), maybe due to the band, but still more my scene. Â A casual place to grab some beers and catch some good music.
Review Source:Never really been a fan. White-washed, snobby crowd.. over priced drinks.. personality-less doormen. However, there are 2 things saving this place (both so good that they take this review from a 1 star to a 4 star), the bartender Jackie and the nachos. Jackie is an absolute sweetheart. There's a really good chance she's so awesome because we over tip her too much (or vice-versa), but that's fine with me. And the nachos..... nah, I'm not even gunna get into that. You seriously have to try them. Seriously. You godda. Right now.
Review Source:Red Bank is just the cutest little town ever with a far view of the ocean behind front street, sigh, I'm in love.
This place I here had window seating....perfect. Got in, seated wherever we want. Â Juliet wad our waitress.
An order of chips and guac to start...delish!! Â You can tell chips were fresh and guacamole was really good! Â
I had the black bean burger with avocado Cole slaw, salad on the side. Â It was good. Â Cole slaw was flavorful. Â My friend ordered the grilled Margarita; liked the cheese but felt the bread was tooooo crunchy. Â My other grind had the wings and she liked them.
I don't think we were overall that impressed with our food. Â It was good, decent and did the job of filling us up. Â Service want bad, though at one point she just dropped the lemon on our table as if she wad upset she had to bring it too us.....but maybe she wad rushing, since she seemed ok otherwise.
Place is cute.....large, dim, looks like they have a great bar though they weren't packed at all for a memorial wknd.
I think next time we'll attempt to discover new eats.
This place is so loud you can't hear yourself scream - and that's during Sunday brunch. There are many complaints on Yelp about the piercing volume. But management can't address this because they are extremely focused on hiring the most incapable wait staff to dazzle you with their olympic-style incompetence. In addition, the food is a whole bunch of "meh".
I've eaten here 3 times (last 2 times against my will) and each time I've had to track down my server six times during the meal. Issues range from food being served cold, to getting orders wrong, to not bringing items asked for. I can't understand how this place stays open, unless it is frequented by people who have never been to a restaurant in their entire lives.
If you're looking for Sunday brunch in Red Bank where you don't have to chase your server or have yelly-screamy conversations in a restaurant as loud as a jet engine, try the Dublin House or The In Between.
I've had good meals here and bad meals here. But overall, it's the service that makes this place a joke. I went to "Burger Night" last night with four other women. Samantha, our server, was unenthusiastic if not just plain miserable to be there. She failed in almost every way a server can fail.
The service was so comically bad that, at a table of five women, we could talk about nothing except how bad the service was. Out of five burgers ordered, only two of us received what we ordered. I ordered a burger, medium, with American cheese. I got cheddar and happily ate it. Cheese is cheese. Turns out, they ran out of American cheese. Samantha told us this about half way through the burgers. Cool.
That was minor compared to the other girls. Bacon when no bacon was ordered. Basically, just a burger clusterpluck. Samantha could not have cared any less about the order mishaps. No apologies were given. It's like she put the order in however she wanted and hoped for the best. She never checked on the table. She never asked if we wanted more drinks (we did). I felt like we were on a candid camera show. Like, when is Ashton Kutcher jumping out?
I generally tip 20 percent regardless of how bad the service was, but my dinner mates would not have it. We settled at 16 percent.
Downtown, get your crap together. Hire better servers. It's not that difficult to smile, be friendly and attentive. The service and attitude at this place is consistently sour. Oh, when my friend asked to speak with the manager, we were told "He's bartending right now." Of course.
I'll be nice- our Paris Hilton lookalike bartender was super sweet and kept the drinks flowing. My mom would really like the playlist. And there was an Elvis impersonator.
However, we left vowing not to move out of Hoboken after seeing how hard people try for a random bar in Red Bank, NJ.
While in the area for a wedding, this was the place that was chosen for the meal for the Bachelorette party. There's a nice private area in the back that we were taken. For as large of a party as we had, it was nice to not compete with the rest of the noise in the restaurant.
I didn't have any qualms with the food, but the brussel sprouts are what stood out to me. I love me some produce. Vegetables, or fruit, are a part of my every meal, and I must have my brussel sprouts doctored up to eat them. These ones were to perfection. Bacon, spices, and walnuts too.. Just yummy yummy goodness.
Another awesome thing that happened is that when I checked in using Foursquare, we got a discount on our check of 15%! With about 12 people there for dinner, that worked out, very, much to our benefit.
Attended a show here on a Saturday night. The line outside was definitely unnecessary as the bar wasn't that packed. We waited for about five-ten minutes, which is a long time considering how brutally cold it was outside.
We didn't have any food, just drinks. We had a fun time dancing upstairs with a live band. Service at the bar was decent and they had a variety of brews, which I liked. Overall, decent experience.
I write this review as I sit in the restaurant. Being greeted by an overly egotistic bouncer I was asked for two forms of id.. Because I guess my id looks to fake for this crap wanna be fancy bar.
After seating ourselves we waited and waited for service with no one coming. I had to get up to ask some random employee for a menu were he lightly apologized in a sarcastic tone...
After finally finding a waitress she never gave a glance at our party she disappeared again and we had to go find her again talking about the latest gossip girl episode on tv with all the other nonworking employees.
All I can say is that this place so far is getting a 5% tip from me. Never go here unless you want to be treated worse than a dog.
Love, love, love this place on a weekend night in the off-season! Situated right in (duh) downtown Red Bank, this place is deceivingly large from the small exterior. Industrial but cozy lighting around the bar and small stage at  the far right corner of the bar that usually features a performer of some sorts whether it be a band or (sometimes) karaoke. Live entertainment doesn't start until later though and I'm not sure who is in charge of the music on the loudspeakers, but it's interesting to say the least. I heard Quiet Riot's "Come on Feel the Noise" and Nelly's " Where the Party At" back to back. At least someone else makes playlists as varied and strange as mine! Beautiful, high-top tables near the tall glass windows facing the street on a chilly December night are definitely the best seats. Well worth the wait, and boy can there ever be one on a Friday. The wait was long even at 6:30 and the bar was jam packed. The manager sent us some complimentary wine because we had such a wait for a table and plus one for that move. I like to see attentive managers who personally greet you and do small gestures like this, they are truly an asset to the business and make the wait easy.
After we were seated, the service was quick and attentive. I wish I could give whichever waitress we had some accolades on here because she was outstanding and funny, however describing her as a brunette Italian girl in New Jersey doesn't really narrow it down. I opted for the Thai salad and which was quite good and sprinkled generously with wontons and mangoes with a light vinaigrette. Honestly, the food is good but it's nothing to write home about and while it's not the best in RB, they do make a mean burger. However, the FRIES are totally amazing and are hand cut and homemade. I wound up snacking more off my boyfriend's fries than I did anything else. I have not had the sushi here, but they have a full sushi menu and at least half the tables order it so I am speculating it must be pretty decent.
Do yourself a favor and do NOT give up your seats if you were thinking of going elsewhere afterwards! You will never get them back again whether it's upstairs, downstairs, or at the bar. This place gets crazzzzy crowded after 10.
went here with my two friends on rock & roll karaoke night . i enjoyed the atmosphere and the drinks . i wanted to sing but the list was too long and my ladies wanted to head to long branch to bar hop. next time i go back i will def try the stage.
would recommend for a chill and fun evening .
Update... the guy was nice enough to eventually offer me free dinner, which I didn't take him up on but I appreciated. In hindsight, I probably should not have been so angry since it was my own drunk ass that lost my things, but I was just upset at the lack of response.
That being said, I have gone back- the sushi is VERY good and the flatbreads are excellent. When there are bands upstairs it's a lot of fun, although the place can get crowded and its difficult to get served. Generally a cool place to go, and to bring a date or hang out with a bunch of friends. Also my first and only karaoke experience. I HATE karaoke, yet I still had a blast.
Stopped in for lunch and they asked us if we wanted a table at the front window. Â Took a look and realized the area was too crowded with patrons and asked to be seated elsewhere. Â The place otherwise wasn't that busy. Obvious that they like seating people at the window so it looks like the place is hopping. It actually did influence our decision to stop in. Â
The food was good, but I thought my rib eye steak sandwich was over priced at $14. Â It wasn't that big and all it came with was a side of fries. Nothing special here to make it likely for me to come back with all the other places in town to try.
I like this place. They make good cocktails, the prices aren't outrageous and they have pretty tasty bar food (maybe "fancy" bar food - like really good sliders). I've been here with my girlfriends for a birthday dinner, with my boyfriend for a date, and with my mom for a beer (came with my mom when there was an oldies-tribute band, which was the best!) and it's all been fun!
Review Source:The Downtown is like one of those cartoony one-man band shows, Â wearing a drum kit, a harmonica, guitar and holding symbols. It's seriously trying to do a million things at once - its a ultra hip modern restaurant! oh wait, its a trendy NYC-metropolitan bar-club-live venue - wait! Â maybe its a Hooters! Â what kind of food do really with-it people eat? Sushi? Brunch? OK, let's throw that in there!
Anyway the good: their french fries. the fact that they had a local beer, Boat, from Highlands, on tap
The bad: Bros in their pajamas watching sports, your dinner table so sticky with beer your napkin basically becomes the new table cover, no vegetarian entrees, and when my sister asks for "honey mustard," the girl brings out a thing of honey and a thing of mustard.
I have been here twice - once, upstairs, for a continuing education lecture where they provided the food (it was decent) and once while bar hopping around the area. The bar is set in the middle, in a rectangle shape and tables are set on the outer parts of the room. It's a nice looking sports bar with an okay crowd. The bartenders were okay that night (a Thursday). I ordered the "Shawtea" (Three Olives Dude Vodka, Green Tea, Honey, Strawberries) which was too sweet and syrupy for my taste. I think my boyfriend ordered AJs Pyrat Booty (something that was rum based) which was a lot tastier. The prices of the drinks were almost similar to NY drinks ($11) so it wasn't that bad. Wouldn't mind stopping in again another night.
Review Source:I've probably been here a dozen or so times the past year. Sunday brunch, dinner, lunch, happy hour, late night... you name it. There's always been one constant here; the service is always crap. The servers are always painfully slooooooooow. I've been there when its packed & when its empty; still the same crappy slow servers. I really don't get it.
IMO, their crappy service is leaving a door open for a new bar to come & walk through and steal their clientele. If I was The Downtown, I'd be cringing at the thought of Char opening up where the old Ashes was.
My girlfriend and I went in for drinks. Some bald headed goateed jersey trash bartender that looked like a reject from a 90s rap-metal band had a shit eating grimace on his face while he looked at my girlfriend's ID then when he got mine asked for multiple forms of ID. this guy clearly was on roid rage or something so I tells the punk to piss off and left. After that I went to the Red Bank police department to report that this place is not honoring United Stated identifications and the police say they've had a big problem with this bar. bad business in here, sad to think what used to be a nice establishment has gone down the toilet.
Review Source:Dined here for lunch and the food was very good. Waitresses were beautiful. [ You should have seen the Spanish broad working the front door sitting customers, yowwwzeers! ] Had the beet salad to start off with goat cheese. Very good, with plenty of flavor. Salad was fresh with plenty of green leafs. Also had the chicken sandwich which was a little too big for me [ and I have a big appetite ] I ate the meal a little too fast because I was hungry. Fries were hot, fresh, and crispy.
This is a great place to eat.
Definitely a fan! Great happy hour with $5 martinis (usually). This is our normal spot in Red Bank for pre-dinner drinks. Be warned: nightlife is "typical Red Bank" with overpriced cocktail prices, a cover charge  to go to the upstairs bar (rolling my eyes...) and gets very packed with mediocre music choices. Stick to happy hour!
Review Source:Thank god it's dark in here because it's as sterile as a hospital.
I've gone a few times, and honestly they all blend together because it's so...average? Mediocre? Unexciting?
The last time stuck out though. The bartender, seemingly a character off Jersey Shore, was so rude and disinterested it was one of the first times I considered not tipping. It always blows my mind when someone in the service industry, especially with an empty bar, treats you like they're next in line for a root canal. When he double IDed my friend, who happened to not be from New Jersey, my friend complied and while waiting, the bartender snidely remarked to him "I mean, come on, this is JOIRSEY man!" Â I grew up here, but and I've never spoken like that or heard someone born in this neighborhood speak that way. Not to mention I'm not an asshole who treats people from different areas like shit.
The drinks were awful. The bartender used top shelf liquor instead of well without asking. We should've left after the remark, but we would've had to interrupt his almost having sex with one of the waitresses at the end of the bar in order to ask for the check.
By the way Mr. Bartender, those gross leaking air conditioning units they installed above the bar were leaking on your blow out. I noticed you couldn't feel it.
So, I don't know how its possible that I used to sneak in here when I was too young to be here but I did. The Downtown hosts live music upstairs and has a great setup. Â Just expect to pay a cover charge and pony up at the bar. Â They definitely pull out their best looks once the sun goes down.
Still, despite lots of dressing up, you can come here to get down.
If you build it, they will come,... I guess. Â Why there is a line around the corner at this place on the weekends, I have no idea. Â They must be giving away pies, or something. Â The only other draw to this place, is the fact that it's one of the few places in town that has live music regularly. Â The food is good, and the drinks are good. Â The staff is good. Â But not anything special. Â They do make their space available for events, especially non-profits like, Painting the Town Pink (cancer awareness), and other benefits, which is great.
Overall, it's a good place, but not worth the wait on the weekends (in my oppinion).
The Downtown is one of those places that is an overpriced lunch and dinner spot that wants to be a club afterdark. Â The menu was good and the pulled pork sandwich was fabulous. Â MR got fries with his and OMG the pile of fries was enough for 3 people. Â AL got the tomato soup and really enjoyed it as well. Â
So why only 2 stars?
OK onto what counts, drinks. Â Hold onto your wallet - $11 mixed drinks and as expected the tiny glass was more ice and mixer than the good stuff. Â I mean come on we are in Red Bank not NYC. Â The upstairs can be rented out for parties and has an additional bar and dance space. Â So overall this place seems to be trying too hard to be in midtown and not hard enough to be down the shore.
Inevitably, every weekend I end up here.
Downtown used to the place you couldn't get in to without actually looking decent. That means NO crappy hoodies, sneakers or baseball caps. The clientele was a nice mix of early twenties up through mix thirties, and the drinks were super well made. I still don't understand the cover charge to go upstairs, but the bands up there are actually worth it most times.
Nowadays...it's SUPER hit or miss. On a good night, the music is loud enough to create a good vibe, but not deafening. It does get crowded. but you never have to wait that long for a drink...and you can usually find a table and a waitress. The drinks are expensive by Red Bank standards, but they are reasonable to someone used to paying Manhattan prices (or Ashes prices, when they still existed).
...On a bad night, this place is full of grimy hipsters who make a giant mess and old creepy guys who are looking to scam on the local Monmouth girls. I'd say go here early, get your drink on and head over to the Fixx to dance. In fact, don't even plan to do that, because it will inevitably happen.
Oh, the bartenders are gorgeous. I think I gawk at them every single time I go. I hear the food is good as well.
Came here for dinner with some co-workers and for a place that I thought would be poshy and snobby, their menu wasn't that bad at all. Â Got a couple of their "pops" stuffed with deliciousness (mac & cheese and they also have crab balls). Â Fish tacos were a little on the small side, so I would avoid those.
The braised short rib nachos were big, filling, enough to share with a group, and sprinkled with rib meat! Â What more could you ask for? Â I guess a little more meat, but not a bad selection for an appetizer. Â Also got the sliders, but I don't remember what I liked the best....let's go with the pulled pork.
Prices weren't too shabby either. Â And I still need to try the live band karoke on Thursdays.
Every Friday after work, I think of the Downtown...(downstairs)
Sometimes, you just want to listen to good music, drink a beer, and have some decent food. This is the place for me on Friday from 6-8pm. I will admit, I Â am drawn to this place primarily because of the awesome acoustic guitar duo that plays happy hour.
They have happy hour drink specials mostly liquor from what I remember. The food is pretty good with an assortment of american food (burgers) to sushi.
The crowd is dressy/afterwork. Guys were in suits and jackets, ladies jeans and dressy tops. Â Mostly an older-ish crowd, 30-40's.
The service is good, but they definitely give you the "are you done yet?" vibe. The waitress came over 2x to try and take our check before we even looked at it. As soon as we left, they put up a reserve sign on the bar table we were at. There also is an upstairs part that I have not ventured to peek at.
Overall, a repeat in my book definitely on Fridays for happy hour downstairs with Rob N J.
Good place to grab lunch when in Red Bank. Â Alot of options from soup, sandwiches, salads, pizzas and sushi.
We ordered the thai chicken salad - lots of chicken in a nice spicy dressing and the open face hanger steak sandwich. Â Comes with fries, salad or veggies. Â A veggie choice was sauteed wild mushrooms which went perfect with the steak.
They have a banana and ice cream brownie dessert is awesome!!!!
I'm giving this place 4 stars because I really like the atmosphere here. In the summer they open up the big windows and you get a nice warm breeze.
It's a good place to hang out, drink some beer and listen to live music which is always nice in my opinion.
The food is decent, but nothing spectacular. I mostly come here because it makes for an enjoyable evening.
I do not remember the old Downtown. Â I must have walked by it a bunch of times but I never went it. Â As far as I know the was a new restuarant.
I have been meaning to give the new Downtown a try for a while. Â For some reason I have always made to go somewhere else. The opportunity finally came when I drop my dog off across the street at Paw Palace for a grooming. Â Since it was right around lunch time and I had a couple hours to kill while the dog got pampered I decided to try Downtown for lunch.
We got there just before noon and we were the first patrons on a Saturday afternoon.  The front windows  (they open to Front street like the bars in NY) were closed which was a good thing considering the storm the hit the area an hour or so later.
The food was very good  and all 3 of us enjoyed what we ordered.  The crab soup came in a big bowl and was excellect even though I needed to jazz it up with some Tabasco Sauce.  We ordered the shrimp tempura appetizer, the mini fish tacos, the buffalo chicken pizza and the slider  sampler (mini burgers).  I tried everything but the pizza.  My dining companions told me the pizza was great but I just could not eat any more.
The staff was friendly. Â The bar tender came over and talked to us while she was setting up the bar. Â
I am not sure how Downtown transitions into the night. Â They have a small stage for live music. Â I also think there is an upstairs dining room for when the bar area gets busy.
It is great that Red Bank has got some many restaurants. Â I only hope they all survive the downturn in the economy.
I'll just say it... I miss the old Downtown.
The major renovation here made the place become more meat head.
It is an amazing space with a large roundabout bar on the first floor while the second floor holds a bar and an full stage with space to dance.
Service is good and the drinks are pretty stiff. Can get pretty crazy on the weekends. Expect a line.
We went here for lunch and a beer and it was nice and good. Â The decor is very pleasing and I understand that they have recently reopened after a major renovation.
They have lots of good lunch options - sandwiches, salads, soup - good stuff.  I had the turkey and brie sandwich which came with my choice of fries or a salad (I chose the salad) and my friend had the chicken club.  My sandwich was very good and I liked have a nice, fresh side salad to go with it.  The chicken club was very good, too, and he ordered a special side of sautéed mushrooms, which were delicious.
We also each had a pint and they had a pretty good list of beers on draft. Â The service was good, it was a nice lunch environment and the bathrooms are nice. Â I would return if I hadn't been dumped by the guy I was visiting who lives near here.
