I was always a fan of Giovanni's so my friend suggested I try this place because she prefers it to Giovanni's. Â I gave it a try first then hopped on over to Giovanni's across the street. Â I like them both for different reasons.
If you like a lot of butter and a side of mac salad, definitely come here!! Â I wanted to drink the butter sauce from the garlic butter shrimp. Â I'm not big on rice so having mac salad was a nice alternative. Â
If you prefer more garlic flavor, go across the way to Giovanni's. Â Their shrimp are bigger, too.
Bottom line, both places are good. Â I'll go to whichever one I'm craving that day. Â As of late, though, it's been Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck ;) Â I will literally make a trip from Ewa all the way to Kahuku just for their shrimp. Â Yes, it's that good! Â Plus, the ladies who work the truck are always very nice!! Â Have some leftovers? Â There are a few kitties that look a little skinny...(wink, wink)
Garlic shrimp, hands down, AWESOME. If you love shrimp, then you should try this place. There are a dozen different Kahuku shrimp trucks, but we came across this one. I like how they have outdoor, covered seating because it ended up raining while we were having lunch. My bf got the hot n spicy shrimp, he alway liked that.
Even though they put a lot of chopped garlic and butter, it doesn't overwhelm the dish. There are some places that I've been to that put a lot of butter and it makes it too salty, but here, it was perfect! If I was ever to drive through Kahuku again, I would DEFINITELY drop for some shrimp!
I'm so sad to say that I went off the beaten path and went to Romy's to try their shrimp. But the good news is that I wasn't satisfied with their shrimp. From now on I'm sticking with my guns and be faithful to THE FAMOUS KAHUKU SHRIMP TRUCK!!! I've tried Giovanni's and Romy's and was not satisfied at all. I checked out both of their reviews here on yelp and wonder how in the world do they get such great reviews???? You won't be completely satisfied and happy until you try the FAMOUS KAHUKU SHRIMP TRUCK! I live in Kapolei so that extra 10 minutes more I have to drive is so worth it! Even though Romys was featured on the food channel... It doesn't mean anything! Take my word for it... THE FAMOUS KAHUKU SHRIMP TRUCK is the BEST I've had so far!
Review Source:This Place Looks Like It Serves Crack Or Something As Addictive!
This place does serve something just as addictive as that sweet, sweet crack...SHRIMP! Make the trip all the way to Kahuku, a place farther than I ever thought I would drive for shrimp, but it was worth it!
When my BFF Justine I. brought me here I thought she was joking! It looked like an abandoned trailer someone left in front of a charming town center, but Yelp has taught me to appreciate "hole in the walls". Everything added to the experience! The lovely, but loud, Chinese woman yelling out the window for people to pick up their orders. The plants around the perimeter that serve as walls to the establishment. That broken down trailer that could have come from my nightmares, but now is an image in my dreams. This is what makes this a special place. So many things that shouldn't work do here! Without the imperfections what would be the use of coming here! It would not be the same :) I ended up loving the atmosphere!
But what people really come here for is the Shrimp! And it lived up the the expectation! I got the Hot n Spicy, which was a nice amount of spice, but it could have used a little more kick. Still Freaking Delicious!!!! I normally do not like to peel my own shrimp, but for this place I get my hands dirty, I peel, I suck, things drip! Totally messy, but even for me it was worth all that mess! I am dreaming about this place and hope I can make it to Kahuku sometime in the near future! Get those shrimp Yeeps! Drive until you see a broken down trailer, make sure they sell shrimp though, not crack! LOL!
This is a very good food truck right off the Kam highway in Kahuku. Â This is the best one I have tried. Â There was a decent size crowd when we arrived.
The lady and I ordered the garlic shrimp, garlic shrimp with steak, and coconut shrimp. Â The average price is about $13 per plate. Â Not sure if we talked to the owner, but one of the workers was very friendly. Â She definitely gave us the feeling of a mom & pop business.
The food was amazing! Â The coconut shrimp was made to near perfection (they gave us a side of lemon juice as dipping sauce), and the garlic shrimp had just enough garlic and butter. Â The steak was cooked just shy of medium well so it was not dry or chewy.
There is not a wide variety of food options in the north shore, but this is the best garlic shrimp truck we tried and we would definitely come back again. Â I highly recommend this place!
I was ready to write a long review comparing Famous Kahukus, Romys and Giovannis but there is really one major defining difference for me. Â Romys and Giovannis use precut jarred garlic and that flavor is bitter and chemical tasting. Â Famous Kahukus taste like fresh garlic in their very special sauces and the shrimp are perfectly cooked while the other two were slightly overdone. Â Ok that's two differences.
Review Source:LOVE IT! Â No crowds, FTW! Â Honestly all the shrimp trucks taste the same to me (sorry sorry!!), I like them all but the locals told me this one is the best and I agree...it is pretty darn good. Â We got the garlic butter shrimp (hot sauce on the side) and squid. Â I'm drooling thinking about it.
They say  the shrimp and steak is good to get here too.  Duly noted for next time ;)
Get the garlic butter shrimp with a side sauce of hot sauce to try... Â That way you can see if you like the hot first and if not you can just toss it... Â I think that this place is a good medium between Macky's and Giovanni's. Â Mackys needs more garlic and Giovanni's has too much. Â Famous is a perrrrfect balance of garlic. Â I like that the side is mac salad too... Â That's the local side of me coming out.
Review Source:My favorite out of all the shrimp trucks (Giovanni's, Macky's) I tried in Hawaii! Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck is located between Giovanni's and Romy's on the Kamehameha Hwy, but they don't have the crazy crowds like Giovanni's or the half hour wait for your food like Romy's. However, I did come during an off time (4pm), so that could explain the smaller crowd. We ordered:
-Hot & Spicy Shrimp ($11, <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/famous-kahuku-shrimp-truck-kahuku?select=3W-vYYddwAX4WJp5yCoUqg#rIO9Cg4gE-JWybmbVMt3bg">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>): Yum! They weren't super spicy, so good for people who don't like a lot of spice. The shrimp were perfectly cooked, and still tasted good an hour and a half after we purchased them. Recommended!
-Coconut Shrimp ($11, <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/famous-kahuku-shrimp-truck-kahuku?select=3W-vYYddwAX4WJp5yCoUqg#3W-vYYddwAX4WJp5yCoUqg">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>): SOOOO good. The coconut crust was light and crispy, with the perfect amount of coconut flavor. The shrimp was perfectly cooked as well. Highly recommended!
-Macaroni Salad (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/famous-kahuku-shrimp-truck-kahuku?select=3W-vYYddwAX4WJp5yCoUqg#t3Xpt1EM9HKi7Kk0s09hnQ">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>): Yum! I also enjoyed their macaroni salad.
If you can only try one shrimp truck in Hawaii, I would choose the Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck! Their shrimp doesn't disappoint, and their staff was really nice and friendly. They also had ample parking, and a covered seating area (not the newest benches, but not bad).
This truck is now my favorite overall. Their hot and spicy shrimp is amazing! I have dreams about this shrimp and I can't wait to have it again. Next trip back to Hawaii I will be there. Â The shrimp is a little smaller compared to some of the other trucks, it comes with 10 pieces, and is served with rice. One thing unique about their shrimp compared to the others is that they butterfly their shrimp so that extra flavor seeps in. I am not really into squid, but my mom and sister split the hot and spicy squid and my sister said she liked that even better than the shrimp. We all agreed that this was our favorite shrimp truck!
My mother, sis, and I went on a shrimp truck taste test. We tried both garlic and spicy shrimps at each place. Here is how I rank them:
1. Famous Kahuka Shrimp Truck (Great, Best hot and spicy shrimp)
2. Giovanni's Shrimp Truck (Great, Best garlic shrimp scampi)
3. Macky's Sweet Shrimp Truck (Good)
4. Fumi's Kahuku Shrimp (No Thanks)
5. Romy's Kahuku Prawns & Shrimp (No Thanks)
Note: These shrimp trucks are cash only.
Famous Kuhuku is known for their Hot and Spicy, and this is the first time I've tried it (I usually gravitate towards butter garlic or spicy garlic which tastes totally different). The sauce was so thick it was almost a paste, lots of chili! It was good, but the shrimp wasn't very fresh the day I came, and the prawns were slightly smaller than other places (they only gave us 9 shrimp too).
If you're looking for hot and spicy shrimp I would recommend it at a different truck closer to Haleiwa, it's closer and probably fresher anyway.
This is hands down my favorite shrimp truck in Oahu. It's down the street from Giovanni's, by the gas station. Don't get it confused with another truck called Kahuku Shrimp Truck. Their seating is limited and not as clean as Giovanni's, but I don't really care. There were a few kittens running around, so avoid this truck if you're allergic to cats!
The spicy sauce was garlicky, had nice heat, and tons of flavor. You can tell them how spicy you want your shrimp to be. Some people complained about the sauce being too thick, which it is, but I loved it. The shells on the shrimp were nice and crispy, so I didn't need to peel. I ate it up, skins on and all. My mom raved on and on about the juicy and plump shrimp! Even my stepdad, the pickiest man I know loved it. The shrimp plate came with a side of rice and macaroni, which was a much better deal than Giovanni's. Everything is made to order, so sit back and try to relax next to the kittens. Delicious!
A note on service: the asian ladies that work here are so friendly and always smiling! Mahalo!
Salivating...
This truck was the site of my first shrimp truck experience. And so good! My dad is usually the one in the family who is obsessed with shrimp, but this place brings out my dad in me. Just the right amount of garlic and butter, and not too heavy. Affordable, too!
The woman gave me extra mac salad after she realized I didn't get any with my garlic shrimp. Did I eat it all along with the extra rice? Of course I did.
NOTHING SPECIAL... just A-OK!
I have nothing else to say,. really.. sorry!
I think it is because I had Savage Shrimp in Kauai.. I just can't stop thinking of it. Â Darn it!! -__- but I guess if you never had garlic shrimp before, you might think this place is good.. I can see that happening.. so please don't skip this place, give it a try.
I am literally shaking my head as I type wondering where to begin. After asking everyone who has ever eaten at a shrimp truck we decided to come here. The line was loonnnggg. Must be great food, right?!?! About thirty mins long, with dirt getting in my sandals and flies buzzing around, but hey it IS outside on the side of a dirt road.
We finally get to the front of the line... we order coconut/garlic butter & hot & spicy. As we are waiting for our food we can see inside the "FAMOUS truck". Â Another long twenty-thirty mins later we get our food. GROSSSSS!!!! Â I can not believe how many people think terrible food is great. They do not clean the shrimp at all, and it just does not even taste good. We ended up throwing it out. Waste of $30.
To top it all off, we see a black cat wandering around inside the tuck. WTF!!! Okay okay, don't freak out. WAit for it... NOW freak out bc we see four feral kittens going through the underside of the truck, walking around and jumping around in the truck looking like dirty little monsters. We seriously wanted to puke. I should have puked.
This is disgusting. I will NEVER EVER EVER eat here or recommend it to anyone.
What is wrong with people?!?!
I wanna thank my cousin Erwin for recommending this place! I ordered the Garlic Butter Shrimp! I love the taste of the lightly battered shrimp with all the garlic & butter! They have many different flavors & also serves steak for you carnivores! Definitely a place to go if you are in Hawaii!
(Forgot to post from awhile back)
I read the reviews. Â
I saw the photos.
I loaded the address into my GPS.
Then I arrived and suddenly I squawk, "EEK!... Is this really it?"
The point I am trying to make is - no - this food truck/trailer is not going to win any vehicle beauty contests. It's a bit rough around the edges.
But don't judge a book by its cover. Â The shrimp is fresh, local, and oh so succulent.
I shared a plate of garlic shrimp with my hubby. I don't know how the shrimp are normally served, but I requested shells off.
The garlic shrimp was nothing short of fabulous. If it didn't take so long, we would have ordered another plate (or two) for each of us.
Meh. seriously, that's what I said afterward..."Meh". Yes, it's garlicky, yes it's buttery, but the rice was really sticky...like mushy sticky, and it really wasn't all that flavorful. I mean, i couldve made that at home! When I drive my butt out to kahuku, I want a special experience! (Although I guess the family of diseased looking cats who live there did make it 'special'). The garlic shrimp plate is $11. Not bad for what u get, but in my personal opinion Id rather have giovannis (on a good day, cause lord knows they are hit or miss), or the never-failing romys.
One 'plus' for this place is that if u want more than just shrimp, u can get it. They have a couple mixed plates (shrimp and steak). I like that. The surf and turf kinda option is not one you see too often at these kinds of establishments.
Overall, I wouldnt go back. But the tour van of Japanese tourists did seem to like it.
Our "driver" to and from the Poly. Cultural Center said this is the spot.
After eating too much for the week I was in Oahu, I hit the Kahuku Shrimp Truck.
What a tasty, guilty pleasure! Â It's a must do on the North Shore.
Go very hungry and feel less guilty. Â I am headed back this November.
After my dissatisfaction with Giovanni's 5 minutes ago. I wanted to eat better shrimp before leaving Kahuku. I looked for another shrimp truck on yelp and this place came up first. There were very few people at this location since most of them were at Giovanni's. I read a friend's review and ordered the Hot & Spicy shrimp and the Coconut Shrimp. I really liked the Hot & Spicy shrimp. It was spicy and very flavorful. I don't want to sound stereotypical but I figured if the lady was Korean, it would taste like Kim Chee but it doesn't. I wish I could describe it better on how it tastes. The sauce goes well with the rice and the macaroni salad wasn't drenched with mayo. You can also get different levels of spiciness but I didn't ask. The shrimp was cooked to near perfect, it was shaped like a big C and not rubbery.
The Coconut shrimp had a big wow factor for me. The shrimp was butterflied, flatten, battered, and deep fried. Instead of using bread crumbs, coconut flakes were used. Each bite of the shrimp is like eating shrimp that was fed coconut throughout it's sad life. It's sweet, crispy, and tasty. The sauce that came with it is like a syrupy lemonade. I do like the sauce, but it's not really needed to eat the shrimp.
It wasn't busy here and it took 5 minutes to get my order which is a plus since I know that my food was made to order.
OOFUMHARD
During my last trip to Oahu, I came here on a recommendation from a friend.  Then I went to Giovanni's just down the street  couple days later, and I returned to Kahuku a few days after that.  Kahuku Shrimp truck is SO MUCH BETTER than Giovanni's!  The flavor of their spicy garlic shrimp is superior to Giovanni's by a long shot and inspired me to attempt to recreate this dish (to moderate success) at home.
When they're not too crowded, you can ask them to peel the shrimp for you. Â I like this option because you can get a lot more of the flavor and sauce... and it's also way easier to eat. Â I only had the regular garlic shrimp and spicy garlic shrimp, but both were fantastic and I don't know that I would ever order anything else. Â If you're visiting Oahu, Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck is a must-try!
I absolutely love The Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck.
Driving out from town to Kahuku is so worth it for the BUTTER GARLIC SHRIMP.Caught in the middle between Romy's Shrimp Truck & Giovannis, Its located right next to the Old Sugar Mill.
The shrimp is butterflied giving the inside some flavor as well.
I don't know what the secret with their buttergarlic is, but it works great. The shrimp is drenched in the butter garlic just how I like it, and the rice got some sauce poured on top.
I practically make love to my food when I'm eating. Heck I'm excited as I'm writing the review for the butter garlic shrimp. That's how much I love it!
Seriously, for $11, and if you love butter garlic go for it. If you're a health nut worrying about calories, maybe not for you for a fair warning.
Disclaimer: this is the first shrimp truck in Oahu that I have visited. I have never been to Giovanni's so I really have no point of comparison.
With that being said, on our recent trip to Oahu for a friend's wedding, we spent one day up in the North Shore. Rather than going to Giovanni's, my wife suggested that we try Famous Kahuku truck instead. We both ordered the garlic shrimp, which came with rice and macaroni salad. I typically don't like eating shrimp, which has more to do with my overall laziness in peeling the shrimp rather than the shrimp itself. However, at Famous Kahuku, they have butterflied cut the shrimp to make it easier for lazy people like myself to peel the shrimp.
The flavors of the shrimp were ridiculously good. Great garlic flavors that left me pining for more shrimp!!! Heck, even the rice and mac salad were phenomenal, and all for $11 a plate!
My wife swears that Famous Kahuku is even better than Giovanni's, so I will just have to take her word for it. Next time we are in Honolulu, U will have to eat at both Giovanni's and Famous Kahuku to confirm her opinions!
FYI - Famous Kahuku is just down the street from Giovanni's and is about 5-10 minutes from Turtle Bay Resort.
The shrimps are awesome here, because it's butterflied cut and the tail is left on. Â This means the poop is cleaned out. Â The butter and garlic flavor is yummy for $11 a plate. Â We also decided to get the shrimp/squid combo and it was just so so. Â The spice was super oily chili and it was not appetizing like the shrimps. Â My advice is to stick with the shrimps.
There were nasty kittens and cats lingering around this place, so we weren't fans of them hanging around us while we ate. Â
Parking is in abundance with ample space. Â The Korean workers were sweet, but they kept getting our orders mixed up and had to redo it at least twice. Â Your guess is good as mine.
We found this roadside shrimp truck through Yelp because it received pretty good reviews. The service was a bit slow but that was probably due to the long line of people and the fact there was only one cook and the person at the window taking the orders.
Seating consists of picnic benches outdoors situated underneath tarps.
A plate lunch will start at around $12 not including drink and side of corn on the cob.
They most likely cook the shrimp in advance and have sitting in a pot of hot water. It was a bit tough and if you don't mind peeling your own shrimp and getting your hands a little dirty, then it shouldn't be a problem!
Bathrooms are outhouses on the property and a sink with soap and paper towels are located right in the middle of the seating area. I guess people need to wash their hands a lot while eating!
There are actually two locations right next to each other. As we drove further down the road we saw a larger sitting area with a raised built-in wooden seating area for protection from the rain and wind.
It can get quite windy out there so definitely bring a jacket!
Otherwise it's a fun experience to dine off of one of these shrimp trucks!
It's been a while since HC and I visited our favorite shrimp truck. Â Having tried several other trucks, we've decided this one is the best with value and taste.
We were the only ones there on Friday morning (11/11/11) a little before 11 a.m. Â We noticed there were small crowds at Romy's and Fumi's, so we were expecting at least a few people at Famous Kahuku. Â We put in our order, a garlic butter shrimp plate and a spicy shrimp plate with 2 drinks. Â Total was $24. Â
Food came out quickly and I was in food heaven for a while. Â I had forgotten how good the shrimp tasted. Â The spicy shrimp was just hot enough and I love how I can put the hot sauce on to the rice too.
The service is always really good here. Â The ladies are really nice and always have smiles on. Â We leave a few dollars for tip every time we come.
Will definitely be returning here any time I'm craving shrimp.
Sorry...To me this place is better than Giovanni's! Â I love their spicy squid and shrimp and steak! Â SOOOOOO GOOOD!
Always have to stop here, the only thing I like about Giovanni's are their Extra spicy shrimp! That burns good, other then that Famous shrimp truck is the way to go!
Garlic Butter Shrimp is also tasty! Â Everything is and they cook their steak just right =(
Talk about garlic and butter over load to the max!
But so so so so good!!!!!!!!
After I found out Giovanni's was frozen shrimp from my moms friend that use to work there my friend introduced me to this place.
So if you crave shrimp, butter, and garlic. Great place to fulfill your cravings!!!
Great thing I love about it is that the people that take your money, not only take your money but if you don't want the mac salad that comes with it they give you an extra scoop of rice and Im asian so I love rice.
Glad theres a sink there and semi soap to wash your hands at after peeling like 12 shrimps.
You can bring your own food and drinks. BYOB. It's great.
PS : Dirty benches and tables for peoplee that hate dirty but hey it's outside. Suck it up and enjoy the food.
PSPS: ANOTHER GREAT THING ABOUT IT is that if you have a party over 60 people they well stay out late no matter what time cooking for you!
The only shrimp truck I'd ever dined at in Hawaii is Giovanni's, as that truck's legendary status makes it a must-stop for tourists. I first went there wayyyyy back in 1999, too early for me to have reviewed it on Yelp. I also hadn't gone back to an island shrimp truck since, despite coming to Oahu almost once a year.
On my most recent trip, we stopped at this truck. A few other friends who were touring the island stopped here after eating at Giovanni's earlier, and told us to come by, since they found Famous Kahuku to be more delicious. I like things that are delicious, so my group headed over.
I immediately decided to go for the spicy shrimp. I like spicy. Actually, I prefer to eat food spicy enough that it hurts me both going down and coming out. The workers here were clearly Korean, and being a half-Korean myself, thought that was an indication that they wouldn't fuck around with the heat.
The heat on the shrimp, though, was sadly mild. The shrimp themselves were of varying quality, as some tasted really fresh and some tasted like they had been left over from the week before. A lot of them hadn't been properly deveined.
I will say, though, that the garlic butter sauce was outrageously delicious. One of the other members of our group had ordered it, and I managed to swindle away three of his garlic shrimp in exchange for three of my meh spicy shrimp. This made me happy, and him sad.
On a side note, apparently my feeble Korean language skills were enough to get my group a scoop of mac salad that was denied the other group of friends that had his this truck earlier. The mac salad was crap, though, so maybe that was more of a commentary on me than I'd like to think.
You know...
Back in the day, when it was just the truck and a couple of tables & chairs, their garlic shrimp was the best ever. Â EVER.
Having paid a visit to that ghetto graffiti'd truck on my last trip home, I was mildly surprised to find that they've upgraded their dining area to a real lanai. Â I mean, thank god the truck's still the same. Â But damn! Â They went and built a little lanai and a makeshift sink. Â Whoa! Â Glad to know business is good (IN THIS ECONOMY!).
That said, I'm kind of bummed to report that my garlic shrimp plate was kind of... dry. Â I don't know if the shrimp's been hanging out on the hotplate for a while or if home girl needed to add more of that garlic butter sauce to my rice...
My brother was all about it though. Â He destroyed his plate lunch in a nano-second. Â Like, he taught those shrimps a lesson they'll never forget. Â In between inhalations, I think I caught a "ho. Â this rice is cooked real good." Â
I know, right?
Whatever. Â I still consider myself a fan. Â All those other hipster food trucks need to bow down.
If you are a GARLIC FANATIC THIS IS YOUR PLACE!!
I've been coming here for YEARS! and Every time I visit, Its like It's my first time!!
The Shrimp here are so Fresh and Plump (They don't precook to serve!). Â When you order your plate, they will pull out a fresh batch of Shrimp and cook it GARLIC-Y & BUTTERY! I have no idea what they do to that Shimp but Its just so SrumpDilliOmptious! Â NO FAIL here! Â So if your on a Diet....don't come here. Â Otherwise, you will absolutely love this place!
This place is usually empty....only because everyone thinks Giovanni is the best....NOPE. Â (thats tourist Advertisement!) If you want your taste buds to EXPLODE, Visit this place! Â the plates are a little pricey but what Shrimp Truck isnt? Â
I go hear at least twice a Month!! and its a good Lunch in-between Beach Hopping! Â
My Boyfriend LOVES this Place & will Go here anytime of the day! :-)
This is by far the BEST and my most FAVORITE shrimp truck EVER! Â We always make a point to stop by when we're driving around the island...which is what we did today. YAY!
We got 4 plates of the Hot and Spicy shrimp... no surprise there since I ALWAYS get the same plate each time we visit. Â OMG...It's soooooooooo good! It has just the right amount of kick and buttery garlicky goodness! YUM! Â Their other menu items such as the garlic butter sauce, squid, and steak plates are also great and worth trying out in case you're not in the mood for some shrimpalicious treat. At $11 a plate, it's also one of the cheaper shrimp trucks in Kahuku AND comes in a generous portion.
Delicious AND cheap? Well, GOOD GOLLY GEE, I'M THERE! Wait... I WAS! YAY!
My tummy is so happy right now!
Came here because my uncle recommended this place and said it was the best.  However, i'd rate it more like a 3.5, until i try more shrimp trucks to compare, as this is only  my 2nd truck that i've tasted.  We came here before hitting the beach at 12:40 and the place wasnt too crowded but about half of the tables were full of people enjoying some shrimp.  =
There were only 2 workers, one was cooking and the other one was taking orders. Â After glancing over the menu, the first thing i saw was hot and spicy and thats what I decided to get. Â The plate came with 10 shrimps, 1 scoop of rice and 1 scoop of mac salad for $11. Â The shrimps were good, perfectly cooked and fresh. Â The sauce was hot but not enough for me, as I still used tabasco, The sauce was also pretty oily and the mac was bland. Â Overall I still gotta try some of Giovanni's shrimp to see if it is as spicy as people say it is =9.
Stop #2 Kahuku Shrimp Crawl
This was my least favorite shrimp place.
Like at Giovanni's, we ordered the garlic butter and spicy shrimp plates. Each plate was $11 and included one scoop of rice and one scoop of macaroni salad.
Unfortunately, their sauces were gross. Both sauces were thick, mushy, and tasted like cornstarch. The hot and spicy plate wasn't even that spicy. Also, the shrimp was shelled, butterflied only at the ends, and was difficult to peel. What a disappointment.
On the bright side, there were no crowds and it was quick to order, but since each dish was made-to-order, it took some time to cook.
Thanks for the tip, Yelpers! Â This place is AWESOME! Â
Up until coming here, my original favorite was Blue Water Shrimp in Waikiki (on Kuhio Rd) but Famous Kahuku is my new favorite! Â I've also tried Giovanni's and Hono's but Famous Kahuku is #1 for me. Â Of course, I have yet to try Romy's and Macky's... will do that next trip. Â We had the Hot & Spicy Shrimp and requested Very Hot and guess what, it was friggin spicy alright. Â Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining... we love things all spicy and this was yummy goodness all the way! Â It was SO flavorful that we were sucking all that fabulous sauce before peeling the shrimps. Â I wish she'd bottle and sell that stuff! Â
For $11, you get 10 succulent shrimps, two scoops of white rice and 1 scoop of mac salad.  HEAVEN!!!  I can't wait till my next visit to  North Shore... pure ono!
I cannot believe this place isn't FULL of reviews for Kahuku Shrimp Trucks.
Of course, I'd assume that most of them would be for the other ones: Giovanni's, Uncle Bo's, Kahuku Plate, Fresh Kahuku Shrimp, Shrimp Shack... Just to name a few imposters. Â (Not that those places aren't delicious! Â I'd bet they are! Â But they're just what I'd like to call a 'tourist trap'!!)
THIS is the original. Â Sometimes hard to spot, unless you know exactly where to look. Â Like I said, there a ton of imposters!
It's run by a cute little Korean lady. Â Sometimes her friends come up and eat there and it's a total Korean-fest of loudness, but it doesn't take away from the food.
Hot & Spicy is the one I like. Â Garlic Butter is good, especially with lemon. Â But I love my Hot & Spicy. Â I like the slight sourness of it.
Here's a secret, if you can find the RIGHT place: Â if you flirt with the lady, she might give you an extra shrimp or two. Â If you'd rather have all shrimp, you can ask her to substitute the rice. Â As in, tell her you want shrimp instead of rice--and she'll give you like 4 extra shrimp!!
The price has risen over the years, but what do you expect? Â
Besides, it's still cheaper than the tourist traps.
By the way--it's messy. Â Just the way I like it!
Vandalism is not encouraged, but she doesn't mind "autographs"
EDIT: Â Just to clear up some confusion... When people say "But I heard Giovanni's was the best??" Â Yeah, the Hale'iwa location is. Â If you're in Kahuku, though, try to search out the famous, original shrimp truck. Â Giovanni's Kahuku isn't bad--it's just not the original.
When I first heard of the shrimp trucks, I was told to avoid the tourist trap of Giovanni's and now I can see why. It's located a mere 50 yds. down from Giovanni's and across the way from the Kahuku hospital.
Perhaps this place does a nice Asian twist on the fried and lightly battered shrimp and being Asian, I am so partial. If you've done the standard Garlic Butter order, I would check out their Hot & Spicy version. Some say the Hot & Spicy sauce is too strong, but I beg to differ. The only thing I can say you'll regret is the Garlic Squid dish.
All the shrimp dishes are $10 which gets one scoop of rice and one scoop of mac salad. Â Flirt with the nice lady and she'll even peel the shrimp for you. Try to be a smartass and ask for a nice warm plate of pu$$y (a vandal wrote that on the menu board and they haven't had the chance to paint over it... poor old Korean lady) and you might get some special sauce in your mac salad. This is easily the local's favorite, even though every single year I come back to this place it seems I get one shrimp less than the previous year.
