Someone must have let the dogs out last night... because Fat Dog was crowded! I wouldn't expect a Wednesday night in Montrose to be so loud.
Overall, I had a good experience. Their drink menu is fun and they put some funny twists on classics such as, the tailwagger or chocolatini. They have a great wine selection as well, which is what I ended up choosing.
We ordered the Jalapeno Mac and Cheese, and it was pretty good! Not really spicy at all, but that one dish definitely made me want to try more off their menu.
WARNING: the bathrooms STINK! It's pretty unbearable, so hold your nose before you walk in. I don't understand how they haven't fixed that since the last time I was here over a year ago.
Fat Dog is a wonderful place to be in the tiny, quiet Montrose area.
Once upon a time in Montrose, I stumbled upon this gem called "The Fat Dog" and boy was it the best place i ever visited. This place is super chill, atmosphere wise and i have met the owner he is so nice. They have a really nice bar and have a lot of drinks with silly names. Around the place you will notice paintings of a pitbull i found out his name is rufus and he is the owners dog. Now as for the food...well it is only the best, everything i have ever had has been spectacular...like fireworks in my mouth, anyways you get the point! It is kinda pricy but its so worth it, you wont be dissapointed. Also if you are a sports fan like me this place is awesome to go to watch the game and just chill but i must warn you the place gets packed at around 6 in the evening. So if your gonna go (i am not sure if they take reservations) i would def. call ahead. And be mindful if you decide to go there it is 21 and over and they WILL ID YOU. The first time when we stumbled upon this gem i was under 21 and we did not know it was 21 and over (now its posted on the door) they checked my id and asked us kindly to leave. It was no biggie but you best bet once i turned 21 we were back and have been going ever since! Love this place.
Review Source:I am a foodie and very picky with the restaurants I choose to eat at. I like the Fat Dog because the food is tasty and prepared well. So many restaurants in Montrose have gone down hill and it is hard to get a good meal around here. I decided to do take out at the Fat Dog because my husband and I have eaten there before and enjoyed the food. Plus take out with a child under 21 was our only option for the night. The Swedish Meatballs were very tasty as well as the Chop Salad. The buffalo wings were over cooked and the fish and chips were soggy, probably due to being in a take out box. I wish the Fat Dog Montrose had the same menu items as the Fat Dog Hollywood. It would be nice to have more yummy food and desert options.
Review Source:Two words: Happy Hour. $3 beers and cider and a great food selection. I recommend the miniburger, onion rings, sweet potato fries, and their hot wings (all on happy hour menu which lasts until 6pm). Tip: Go when Dave is there. Dave is the best bartender! They play good music, have sports on, and Guinness on tap. Their menu is pretty solid and the ambience will make you never want to leave. It's not a large place but I think that's part of it's appeal. P.S. Park in the back.
Review Source:We recently held a mixer here for one of the Young Professionals network groups I belong to! I don't know why I never set foot in this place before... I live nearby. It was totally not what I expected. It has a sort of Gastro pub feel. The menu is great. I had the burger and sweet potato fries and OMGoodness you guys, it was phenomenal. Best burger I've encountered in quite some time. Also they had these heroin laced almonds of amazingness instead of your standard bar peanuts, and they even had decent non-alcoholic beer on tap. Next time I go I'm gonna force my husband to order the burger so I can steal bites and then order the jalapeno mac and cheese for me... I hear it's delicious but I want another burger. ;)
Review Source:We walked in after our softball game (about 7-8 of us). Looking to grab a couple of drinks and order some food, we all took up the 2 tables by the entrance to the bar. First off, it was a Monday night...not too packed and busy.
The male bartender/waiter took our orders and was cool with all of us splitting the check since it was a big group...no problem...add the 18% tip to each bill, no problem either.
Food was pretty decent but took a while to be served. Even the drinks and beers took a long time (2 bartenders, not too packed and still slow).
The kicker at the end was the female bartender who was being unpleasant. I noticed that when I walked to the restroom early on when we first sat down as she had this unwelcoming look to her face like she didn't want to be there. After we finished, the first 2 people got their checks separated, no problem. But after them, the female bartender said she couldn't split the checks anymore since she already rung everyone up together. Crock of crap since the guy original said it would be ok. It was also a teammates birthday so we had a birthday cake for her. We didn't finish the cake and there must of been half of it left. We asked the 2 bartenders if they wanted cake and the the guy said cool while the female looked like she was going to say yes but then declined. Oh well....last time I'll visit this small bar in Montrose. There are other places nearby where we can find decent drinks and less expensive food ($15 for 3 small sliders and salty-as-heck fries).
I wanted to go to a nice place after my softball game to celebrate my birthday. I yelped this place which was 5/6 min away from our field. I saw they had a vegetarian dish so I figured this would be good for me and my teammates since the place seemed really cool online.
When we arrived we sat at the only big enough space for our group which was still kinda tight. Looking at the menu there was no vegetarian friendly dish I was  disappointed. I ordered something and made it vegetarian but I though that the yelp ad was misleading. We all waited a long time to receive the food. The food was not that bad to me, but slightly over priced for small portions. The beer selection was good.
Halfway through eating this over powering smell of cleaning products emerged while we were still eating. I thought bad move, definitely not something you want to smell while you eat your food. Overall..this place did not deliver on my expectations.
Came here after a show to catch the Laker's game. We were served right away and ordered. I had hummus and my friend had their steak. I had a Jameson on the rocks and my friend had a old fashion. The drinks and food were pretty good. I don't know if i'd come back only because I don't usually come to this area.
Review Source:Not the friendliest or inviting wait staff but it's local, they have good beers on tap, pretty good bar food, and it's a good place to watch sports, except for Sundays since they're closed. My favorite thing on the menu is their sausage which is nice and charred on the outside. The condiments and toppings come in these individualized square dishes which are super cute. Not too shabby for LC!
Review Source:Came here for some pre-dinner drinks. At first I was little unsure of this place. The reviews weren't speaking too highly of it, and it said sports bar.
Well I take back my reservations because this place was pretty good. The menu is fun and creative (having all the drinks be dog related) and they have a decent craft beer menu. The prices aren't that bad either for the drinks.
The drinks themselves are very well done, stiff, and delicious. There was really one bartender working (another one who just seemed lost kinda helping), and he was flying. I never waited for a drink, and he never missed a beat.
We had a pretezel here too. It was good. The right amount of filling without being too much. The other food I saw looked great too, but I was going for a fancier dinner later.
The only thing I didn't care for here was the set up. It is a long narrow bar with seating by the bar and booths along the wall. It feels slightly cramped, especially when more people come in. When we left the pub run had just gotten there and the noise became unbearable.
I would come here when it is quiet and low key. When this place gets going the noise will burst your ears.
I love this part of the tiwn. I love Montrose. Â This place is one of the popular place I montrose but I. Not sure why. Â Food is ok... nothing Special ... not too trendy....overall its ok... price I think its ok but its kind of overpriced for overall experience. Â Its not expensive but I will not revisit. Â I Just dont find it anything so Special in terms of price.taste or atmosphere. Â Its whatever. Â I guess its a decent place to grab sone breakfast brunch and lunch for ppl who leave There. Or when You dont know where to dine when you are around Montrose
Review Source:This place is the best local bar, the food is very good and high quality unlike other local bars, try the chicken sandwich, its amazing, the French fries are among my top 5 ever, they got rid of my favorite plate which were the potato skins, a couple complaints I've heard was that the hot dog was actually not so good, I didn't like the Mac and cheese, and my burger flight was burned (bread and meat) even though I wanted it medium rare.
Beers on tap are among my favorite, the hef and carlsberg.
Perfect chill spot. Lots of tvs, good service.
Nice space... decently yummy cocktails. Â Beer selection is broad enough but a little unusual. Â It seems that some of the things you'd expect are missing but it's not a big deal. Â I think I'd need another look to put my finger on it. Â
My main problem with the place is that the bar food is tiny. Â We ordered the olives and I think there were 4-5 of them. Â So, it was expensive for the volume but it was tasty. Â (To be fair, I am not expecting Cheesecake Factory portions.)
I really wish I could give 3.5 stars instead of 3. Â It deserves more than that.
It's funny, we didn't know how much we wanted a great neighborhood bar until we had one. Â My wife and I love going to Fat Dog for casual dinners pretty much any night of the week.
Favorites on the menu are the potato skins (super crisp and light), the burger (which easily one of the best I've ever had), the short rib sandwich (which I dream about) and my wife loves the chopped salad when she wants something lighter.
Most nights we sit at the bar and the service is great. Â If we are there with more people we sit at the booths and there the service can break down a little. Â I'd love to see the servers able to move a little faster and when the place gets busy food service can slow down due to a smaller kitchen.
All in all, Fat Dog is great for what it is and what it is is a local neighborhood bar with really good food. Â It isn't trying to be any more than that and that's what makes it great.
The Montrose location is far more lively than the one Fairfax. Â It's a lot smaller too, so it can be a bit loud. Â Tables are first come, first served, so plan ahead if you want dinner or have a large party. Â We were lucky to score the table near the store front. Â Very cozy with a window view of the holiday decorated Honolulu Ave.
The food is the same quality as the Fairfax location. Â Ordered the soft pretzels with cheese as a appetizer, Â Swedish meatballs and steak and frites. Â All very good and served piping hot. Â The menu items definitely are different from the typical bar food and tastier too! Â The beer selection is different, and the rotating draft selection is true to its name. Â When we arrived, they had just tapped two new ones. Â I love how they support local breweries.
Despite how busy it was, our server was awesome. Â He checked-in with us frequently and kept us in the loop with our food order. The food didn't come too quickly nor did it take too long. Glasses were always full, and he certainly was knowledgeable about their beer selection.
The Fat Dog offers some nightlife to the otherwise sleepy neighborhood of Montrose.
Loved the Hollywood location so we decided to check this one out for some snackage.
Ended up with the jalapeno mac and cheese and the warm soft pretzels. The cheese fondue that comes with the pretzel is sooo good. The mac and cheese is also cheesy in a good way.
Both of them were really great.
The place is really dark and they don't really check on you at all (which we were fine with). They don't have the honey lavender chicken at this location so I would definitely recommend checking out the Hollywood one to get it!
This review is only for the drinks/bar at night, I've yet to try the food here. But the old fashioned w/Makers Mark I had was really good!
The crowd was pretty mixed, I definitely ran into some old high school classmates, who were pleasantly drunk :) as I had hoped to get. And then there were some weird creeptastic older guys hitting on my good girlfriends, but nothing too weird...except for the death stank on his breath.
Drinks are moderately priced, around $10/cocktail and they have an interesting beer selection, so I'll definitely be back. Friends and I sat in a dark booth and had a great time with really good drinks for an alright price.
SO MUCH DAMN RADIOHEAD. Â It was nice to hear a mix of good music to go with great drinks. The people who work there are AWESOME.
Order the wings and the Fat Dog. Calories and Salt never tasted so great.
The wings are seriously hand-crafted, full of meat, and are herbed to death. Â Not as hot as most wings, but the flavor is a fine balance of sodium, herbs, and wingy goodness.
The Fat Dog is a giant weiner that will benefit you oh-so-well if you've been pounding down one of their amazing whiskey drinks. The burger is great too.
Girls night out last night... got there parked on the street walked in.. No one at the door, we found ourselves a little booth and sat down. Waited about 5 min for a waitress (the only waitress working) to notice us. She came by, checked ID's and left. Came back with the menu. We ordered our drinks that came really fast..
I got the  Sneaky Dick Willie (peach Schnapps, Amaretto Di Saronno And OJ) It tasted  like Juice.. but it was good..
My friends got the Key lime pug That sucked... and the Tailwagger that was really good..
Our food took forever to come out.. We got the Chicken Sandwich that came with fries. The sandwich was too small but it tasted really good. But my half of the sandwich didn't have bacon in it...Also got the mac and cheese and it was delicious.
ONLY 2 people working? One bartender and one waitress. Service was super slow, and when you throw 4 hungry girls together and the service gets slow its not good. We had already started talking about which one us would taste better to eat first! lol
Overall place was OK, might or might not come back... If I'm starving I will not be coming here...
For me, Fat Dog is more about the people I get to see when I come here (family friends who live in the area) and less about a fabulous "gastropub" style experience. Here's why:
Beer selection is pretty good. I usually settle on the heffeweizen, the one they have on tap is really refreshing.
Food is just okay. I've never had anything extremely memorable, but nothing has ever stood out as "bad".
Service is mediocre. There was just something a little snotty about our waitress. Last time I was there was a few days ago, Stanley Cup Finals Game 5. The bar was a lot less crowded than I'd have assumed it would be, but if I was a waitress on this kind of sporting occasion I would've been on my personal game, being awesome, hustling for tips. She had a "couldn't be bothered" attitude. Whatever, her loss in the end.
The only reason why Im kind of a fan of this place is because of the beer selection - which seems to have lessened over the past year or so. Ive been here about 7 - 10 times and my experiences are getting worse each time.
I really want to like this place - but its become tooo loud - the service is too poor - the food quality is mehh the portions are small and unsharable - and boarderline overpriced - and too overcrowded
mehhh i wont go back here for anything but a beer - and not much by choice either..
At first I was really taken with the Fat Dog. I mean, they've got a doggie water bowl out front! The interior looks OK and they have a good selection of beers. I like their hamburger.
It wasn't until the 4th visit or so that it started to the Fat Dog started to bug me.
First off, this place is LOUD. It's not that the people are loud it's that the place is one giant rectangle with no sound proofing. The owners would do everyone a favor by putting in some sound damping in the ceiling as a start. It's not an enjoyable place to hang out with friends because you have to yell to be heard!
Second, while I like their hamburger all the other food is just OK to poor. Last week I had their BRAISED SHORT-RIB FRENCH DIP SANDWICH. It tasted pretty good but after awhile I noticed the cumulative taste of too much salt. I couldn't get that taste out of my mouth for 2 days! the Au jus is just beef bouillon, which didn't help with the salty taste!
I want to like this place but until they get some decent cooks and get the noise level under control I won't be back.
I came to Fat Dog this past weekend to watch a basketball game and grab a bite to eat with a friend. Â Here's a quick rundown of my thoughts about this place.
CONS:
- I was a bit displeased with the layout of this bar. Â You walk in and there are table booths to the left and the bar to the right. Â When it gets packed, its like the strait of gilbrator between the two areas.
- No hostess to greet you or take you to a table.  You kinda walk in and don't know if you can seat yourself  or if you have to wait to be seated.  You're kind of like a "lost dog" for a few seconds (pun intended).  Turns out you can seat yourself.
PROS:
- Great selection of beers.
- Menu isn't bad either. Â Actually, for a bar, their menu contains plenty of options for all types of guests. Â I had the jalapeno mac & cheese, tried the fish & chips, and my friend had a burger. Â All the appetizers, entrees, etc. Â are also well presented, which I was pleasantly surprised to see. Â
- Everything is priced reasonable.
- Accommodating service.
All in all, I would definitely come back to Fat Dog.
Decided to venture out and ended up at The Fat Dog. Great name! By the way
If you are driving by this place it looks small but when you walk in you realize it goes back a long way. Long bar with seats along the right, Booths on the left for those looking to eat. Seems like a nice casual place to either come watch a game (3 TV's) and have a beer or sit down for a dinner.
They have a decent beer selection. As more and more bars become more beer centric it's hard to keep up, but you should find something you like on the menu here. I had a Syrah and it was excellent. I only stayed for a drink as I wanted to explore the area a bit more.
It was packed when we walked in, but people are moving in and out all the time and if you keep your eyes open you should be able to find a seat within a few minutes.
Came here at 5pm, is was almost full house already, only take about 30 minutes to be full house, however this place is clearly under staff, only have 1 waiter and 1 waitress. Food come very slow, from 20 minutes up to 45 minutes from 1 item. Â
The food quality is great especially the chickpea hummus is a must try, warm pita bread, and very tasty hummus.
The sweet potato fries is not bad is cheap if you have happy hour, but portion is not much. Â regular fries is slight more than sweet potato. The grill chicken sandiwtch is very oily but is tasty. Â The flight (3 gourmet mini burger) is very delicious but is a bit pricey.
Use with groupon so pricey was not too bad except can't use with happy hours menu. Â the free appetizer is the bomb (salty almod with some sauce maybe olive oil and somethign else) too bad can't order this from the menu i rather eat this than the sweet potato. The have several lcd but the channel are not hd kinda wasted.
First of all, this is based off of a single visit, but they earned every star.
BTW, to those who wrote neg reviews, helps your cause if your 4letter word count is less than double digits....sorry you didn't get our server, Rochelle was great. try asking for her next time.
now, back to review: Do you wonder why not a single review complains about the short rib french dip? yeah, that's b/c it's awesome. 3/4 of our table thought so too. Sourdough was buttered and crisped golden, onions perfectly carmelized, pork was tender and flavorful, and I'm a sucker for gruyere. Au jus was the perfect finish.
the one lam-O at our table had the days pasta, pretty well received, ample amount of Chx and tomatoes. We started w/ reg and sweet potato fries, both were solid, though you might want to use the Groupon to save a couple $....prices are on the higher side for LA, but if you come from NYC, you'll feel like you're paying mickey-D's prices  :)  don't expect huge portions but, combined w/ a beer or two, you should walk out plenty full. Taste should ALWAYS come before portion size (a lesson America could well learn w/ our 2/3 obesity rates).
Finally, beers were well received all around (except by our mormon buddy- poor guy :) Â prices on beer is beyond reasonable, downright cheap and a solid selection.
Service: this is what tipped it to 5 (as prices would have put it at 4.5), as Rochelle was juuuust the right amount of attentive without being there "too much."
All in all, I'll most certainly be back here, esp to this location as downtown Montrose is much nicer than H'wood.
"Third Time Not So Charming"
This was our third visit to The Fat Dog in Montrose and it will be our last because the experience was awful. The first two times weren't too bad since my wife and I had sat at the bar where the bartender is forced to cater to you. However, this time we sat at a booth and were fucking neglected by our server Laurie. Yes that's right, I called you out.
What I don't understand is how you can provide crap service when the first thing you notice about me is that I am checking into Yelp on my smart phone. Are you that fucking oblivious? Let's just say that at 6:25 PM on a Wednesday night, my wife and I walked into an empty Fat Dog bar that consisted of six other patrons. No one greeted us because the server (Laurie) and the bartender were chatting away by the register at the end of the bar. Therefore, we sat ourselves at an open booth. Luckily, their alcohol menu is on the wall and their food menu is online, so we were able to keep ourselves occupied until Laurie finally arrived with the menus a good 8 minutes and 43 seconds after we first walked in. That's right, it took nearly 10 minutes before anyone at this fucking bar acknowledged us.
When Laurie arrived we promptly ordered a Craftsman Hefeweizen for the wife and a Green Flash West Coast IPA for me. For food we ordered Fish and Chips and Chili Mac. The one thing that this place has going for it is their beer selection and their prices. While it is not extensive, The Fat Dog has great craft beers on tap as well as a decent selection of bottled beer. Draft beers cost around $5-$6 and bottled beer costs between $4-$16. $16 that is for a 750 ml Delirium Tremens, which isn't too bad since they sell it at local markets for around $12.
Anyways, having had a long day at work I was done with my beer reasonably quickly. Then I started counting. Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick fucking tock... Seriously, how does a server that is employed at a bar, walk by an empty glass without asking if the customer wants another? That shit is Waitressing 101 and I've gotten better service at Conrad's and that place is like drinking at a fucking Elk's Lodge. Â
So instead of asking me for another beer, Laurie ends up chatting with a patron at the opposite end of the bar. Therefore, there are now two workers behind the bar and zero workers attending the booths. Fucking genius. Tick, tock, tick tock... 10 minutes go by and in the meantime my wife has finished her beer. Goddamn it, we need more beer, bitches! What baffles me is how Laurie didn't notice me mad dogging (no pun intended) her from the booth while she was flirting away with a customer that appeared to be a regular. You know what? Fuck that, if you treat people like this there won't be anymore regulars.
The final insult was that she fucking lied. When she finally arrived at our booth to ask us if we wanted another round, which we promptly ordered (one Anderson Valley Boont Amber Ale and one Fullers London Pride), my wife asked her if she could check on our food. At this request, Laurie stated "Oh yea, I was just back there and they are plating your food."
Let me take a timeout and explain to you the layout of this bar. It is a north-south trending bar with the main entrance along Honolulu Avenue at the southern façade of the bar. You walk in and you will see booths that line the western wall of the bar and an elongated bar situated along the eastern half. Three-quarters of the bar is occupied by this dining/bar area. The remainder of the bar consists of restrooms and a kitchen at the northern portion of the bar. Therefore, if Laurie had really checked up on our food, she would have had to walk past our booth to get to the kitchen since she was at the bar. Had this occurred, I would have tae-kwon-do'd her ass before I let her walk past our booth again without taking our beer order. So in fact, it was on her way to the kitchen that she finally noticed out empty glasses. Fucking shameless.
As for the food, definitely overpriced compared to the alcohol. $9 for the Chili Mac, which was okay, and $15 for the Fish and Chips that consisted of four pieces of cod and uber salty fries. In fact, all their food tasted over seasoned. Even their complimentary almonds marinated in thyme, rosemary and crushed peppers were a little too pungent.
Sigh... The Fat Dog has the potential to be the "Top Dog" in Montrose if they can fix their awful service and salty food. But then again, who gives a shit about Montrose? And you know what, I've never liked fat dogs anyway because they tend to be inactive and fucking lazy. Kind of sums up the people that work here.
After purchasing a Groupon, we made it out here on a Friday night. The place was crackin' and all the booths were occupied, but were able to grab some seats at the bar, which was pretty full as well.
Was really digging their beer and drink selection, and had a difficult time choosing an entree since there were several selections on the menu that sounded great. When I finally decided on the skirt steak, our server tells us they're out... BURRRRRN. After getting over my brief disappointment, I went ahead and ordered the burger and fries and the girlfriend ordered the chicken pot pie. The burger was junior-sized, but jam packed with caramelized onions and delicious. I was also digging the french fries, which had that nice crisp to them that I really like. And while my brownness prevents me from being able to enjoy pot pie, she claimed it was really great and loved it. In the end, we were both happy with our dinners.
I initially wasn't feeling the service at the bar, as it felt very rushed and cold, such as what one would expect at a club on the weekend. But then again, the bartender was tending the bar by himself for a while. After he got a bit of help, he was much more attentive and friendly. Unfortunately, I can't remember the dude's name.
Overall, it was a good experience, despite the fact that we were NOT in the mood for a loud-ass sports bar, which is what this place is.
And a word of caution to the alcoholics out there: parking out back is limited to THIRTEEN HOURS, so make sure you're watching the clock.
UPDATE 8/20/11: Â I recieved a canned response from The Fat Dog. Just proves that they truly don't care their staff is crap or any feedback given by customers. Â I standby my review below and will not go back to The Fat Dog.
---
I was at Fat Dog for the first time yesterday afternoon (Aug 18, 2011). Â I joined my friends at 5:30pm--they had already been there and had started ordering from the Happy Hour menu. Â After about 15 minutes waiting, our server (woman, long brown hair) came up to the table, she took my order and a few more additions from my friends. Â
She returned with the beer I ordered. Â I asked for a pint glass when she plunked down a bottle, she actually rolled her eyes and said, "Ok" in a very exasperated way. Â Took another 15 mintues, but she eventually came back with a glass. Â I am not a dude and, in fact, ordered a Pear Cider - both factors in which I think a pint glass is perfectly acceptable to drink from! Â
Other lowlights were: Â 1. Â When a friend asked for more water because the bottle they use for tables was empty, she said, "do you really need a whole bottle or is one glass enough?" Â I'm sorry, but I don't see why it's so difficult to fill the bottle with tap water?
And 2. Â She never told us that Happy Hour was ending or over at 6pm (nor are the times printed on the menu). Â However, we continued to order off the Happy Hour menu and when the bill was brought, we had different prices for the exact same things. Â When questioned, the server said, "You ordered after Happy Hour ended." And walked away. Â
Excuse me, but the ONLY menu we had on our table was for Happy Hour AND had it the whole time. Never was it collected, explained that HH was over, or were we given a different menu when we continued to order.
I have since looked up when Fat Dog's Happy Hours are on the website (4-6pm) and think it would be beneficial to customers if they shared that information better - print on the menu and have the staff be proactive in informing customers. Â Every other bar and restaurant I frequent in the area does.
We left just before 7pm and because of the server's attitude and overall service, I will be hard pressed to ever visit Fat Dog again or encourage others to check it out. Â
I suggest a little retraining of the staff and perhaps extending the Happy Hour. Â Those that work in an office environment find it difficult to get to a HH before 6pm.
For full disclosure, the food I had was yummy, though it took FOREVER to arrive - Mini Cheeseburger with Fries. Â My friends reported good things about the Chicken Tacos, "A Cheese Bite", and Onion Rings (Hence 2 stars instead of 1).
I am so cranky and discouraged by last night not only have I written this review, but I have sent an email directly to Fat Dog too.
Bah Humbug!!
After hearing about this place from friends and choosing a place nearby, we arrived at this cutely named gastropub.
The interior is dark and somewhat romantic. Being in starvation mode, fortunately they offered a limitless supply of candied almonds. Via yelp reviews, we decided to order the jalapeno bacon mac & cheese and the fried egg panini. My friend ordered a veggie sandwich.
Our egg panini had great flavors infused with smoked bacon and aioli sauce. The mac & cheese was a disappointment. It was runny and lacked the creamy gooey saltiness that a great mac & cheese should have. The extra jalapeno and bacon didn't improve the dish one bit. The sweet potatoes fries quite good though.
I took a bite out of my friends' veggie sandwich. I loved the big glob of goat cheese in it, but it was too "unmeaty" for me. Gotta have the meat.
Overall, service was nice, many beers on top, but food was only mediocre.
Free parking everywhere in Montrose, unlike Pasadena or DTLA.
This a hard one, i like to say 3 stars but just couldnt do. I can see myself getting a beer here at the bar.
We got the fried egg panini, mac n cheese, sweet potato fries and there was a veggie sandwich to be seen.
The mac was very loose and just lacking a a sharp cheese flavor and needed more seasoning. The panini was more a lightly toasted bread missing a balance with the egg lost in the soft bread. The fries were the highlight.
So i say stay with a tap beer and fries to snack if hitting this place up.
Everytime I step into this bar, my inner voice tells me to order the "FAT DOG" (funny, I'm not sure, but I believe they have a limited selection of Hotdogs)...but I seem to get ADD everytime I step foot in a gastropub...and never order what I plan to order...next time I'll write it down..but I seem to forget to do that too..
"The FAT DOG" ~ seriously.. this name just screams...hmm i dunno SAUSAGE??
For some odd reason..I imagined this place to be like Wurkustche ..but its not..they serve some pretty decent, tasty dishes which are quite pricey..so I recommend meeting your friends here during happy hour. Â
**WARNING**Consecutive and repeated visits to "The Fat Dog" may turn you into a Fat dog.
