First time there. I pulled up at 5 min before closing time and was waved in by the owner who was standing in the window. Couple of hot dogs for my boy, nice crisp snap on them, hand cut french fries, steak sandwich for myself. The meat was grilled perfectly and served with carmelized sweet onions and W sauce on the side and served on toasted garlic bread. There is nothing I would have done differently.
Wide selection of beers and a very knowledgeable, friendly staff that makes you feel at home. Good prices.
There are places that you can tell that are passionate about their product; this is one of them. Ask the owner how something is made, like something off the new smoked menu, and you're in for a great conversation. It's going to be a regular spot for me. Woohoo! As good as it gets!
My husband and I dropped by after Fat Tommy's was featured on Chicago's Best as we live in the neighborhood. You order and pay, then seat yourself. We both had the bacon wrapped hot dogs and fries which were really good, but a little pricey to be honest. Their beer selection was really good and I love love love a frosted mug. The owner was very friendly as well. Though it was a little on the pricey side for what you get, we will come back, just not often.
Review Source:Let me say first... that it is WELL WORTH the wait
Chicago dog was a win win
Ditka dog was perfect
got the loaded fries with chili and the garden.. very good home fries and fresh toppings
also tried the onion rings.. very tasty
They had root beer on tap.. YAY!!
Pleasant service and nice sit down atmosphere also.. there was a lot of families and groups there
If you want to wait a long time for a hot dog or burger and you do not care if it is good. Â Then try this place. Nice area to eat and nice beer garden. Food just not up to par. Â I have seen some of the other reviews and they must be family or friends. Â If you like someone you would never send them here.
Review Source:Fresh salads, all beef dogs, milk shakes made the old school way, home-cut fries (big enough to split a basket if you dine in) and a great, personable, funny staff. If you have to wait it is because everything is made fresh and to-order. You can play checkers, read a book from their selection, watch TV, read one of the free papers they offer or snag a Chicago Reader to kill time while you wait.
Beer on tap or by the bottle (nice variety for a neighborhood spot) and patio (aka beer garden) out back. SO much more than hot dogs, although a great dog is nothing to sneeze at. Air conditioning a bonus in the heat. Â Their cajun chicken breast added to a salad is choice. SO lean. Â A fun place to swing by, but they also do carry out.
If you pay it a little more, it is for quality food and generous portions from great people. I enjoy supporting the local small businesses. Well worth it in my view. Ya want cheap and fast, there's no shortage of disappointing hot-dog dumps in the area. I'll pass and stick with these folks.
Try "Fat Tommy's"....you'll like it!
After passing this place many times and seeing decent reviews, thought I would give a try. Â So I gave it my hot dog test, basing a place on it's hot dogs. Â The first thing that is good is that place is clean and cozy, the people running the place are very funny and nice.
Like some of the other reviews said, the food is over priced and it takes forever to get your order served to you. Â The bun was cold and not steamed and no poppy seeds. Â The hand cut fries, which I love, were a bit over cooked. Â But the worst thing was that the relish on the hot dog was so sweet it over powered the taste of the dog itself. Â So every bite all you tasted was the relish.
So I will continue to search the perfect hot dog stand.
Meh is right.
The burger and fries smelled good...unfortunately the fries were soggy and limp and the burger came with what looked like cheese sauce instead of a slice of cheddar. Overall, I've had better. I think the burger would have been better if it actually had cheese that wasn't gritty in texture and look.
There are so many mediocre restaurants in Beverly/Morgan Park/Mt. Greenwood that I get really excited when someplace continues to meet and exceed my expectations after many visits. Fat Tommy's is one of those places.
I was missing out BIG TIME for the first year or so that I lived in the area by not visiting sooner. Fat Tommy's has turned into our favorite local dog and burger shop, which is something coming from a life-long south-sider still mourning the loss of Red's. I was impressed on my first visit over a year ago, when I asked for a brisket sandwich and was told by the owner, Dan, that I couldn't have one because it wasn't "ready yet." When I learned that they smoke their own brisket, ribs, and pork butt on-site, and that the proprietor took enough pride in his food that he wouldn't serve brisket until he knew it was right, I knew there was something about the joint.
The hot dogs are fantastic, better than anyplace else in the area (although I've kinda always wondered why they don't use poppyseed buns). Hand-cut fries, with the skins still on. HANDS DOWN the best cheeseburger I have ever eaten. As I mentioned, the brisket, pulled pork, and ribs are all smoked on site, and the beef is made from scratch. The Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida salad is amazing, as is their "bowl full of summer," the Fiesta del Sol salad. Soups are made on-site from scratch. Over the past nine months or so, my wife and I have become weekly customers for their Tuesday trivia, hosted by the adorable (and very smart) Nikki, which has given us an opportunity to get to know the proprietors and their dedication to good food.
This place is a winner. Patio (BYOB) is awesome in the summer. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!
Fat Tommy's has become a local hangout for those looking for something fun to do on Tuesday nights - they have trivia! Â For $10 a team, you can play trivia with a great group of fun people. Â There are prizes - for second place you win your $10 back, and for first place, you win all of the other teams' entry fees, minus $10. Â
Fat Tommy's food is excellent. Â They have one of the best cheeseburgers I've had, and their Philly cheesesteak sandwiches are out of this world. Â Of course, the hot dogs are the main event, but don't forget the chicken, the beef, or the ice cream. Â In the winter, there is home-made chili and soup too.
A great, friendly neighborhood place that everyone should check out. Â Great outdoor seating area in the summer.
Great little place to grab a hot dog... or brat. I just recently tried their In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida salad. Â This iron butterfly salad came with grilled chicken, nuts, veggies and a delicious raspberry vinaigrette. If you're looking for something different for lunch stop into Fat Tommy's!
Also, the owner and staff over there are really nice. They've come out to events at the Beverly Arts Center and sold their delicious treats on a cart.
