If you are gluten free, they are not interested in your business. My family and I stopped in on a Saturday night after reading they had increased the GF options- and we were set to give it a try. Â The host couldn't care less about our request to know what the GF selections were, he couldn't be bothered to even show us a menu, he basically refused and simply kept saying "you can have a white sauce". We asked about soups, he said the were all pre made (canned) and were not GF. The five of us stood there in disbelief and walked out. Â He did not want to win our business or even try to accommodate us. We're summer locals and will never go back. Â One star because I can't give it no stars.
Review Source:My wife and I just moved to Cohasset from downtown Boston, and decided to try Feng Shui. Overall, we were not impressed. We ordered takeout, so can not speak to the quality of service or decor. Restaurant was not busy, and this was a weekday evening.
Food review:
What kind of chinese restaurant doesn't include rice with the meals?
We ordered: a Halibut special, a broccoli veggie dish, some veggies descriptively titled "Shanghai Greens", and I believe some lo mein and some crab rangoon (both average and forgettable).
Considering the restaurant does not include rice, you figured the person on the phone would have asked if we wanted rice, or informed us that it wasn't include. Nope, I had to wait until I arrived back home, and called assuming they had forgotten my rice, when they promptly said "you have to order rice, thank you." and hung up. Halibut tasted great, and even though I know it is an expensive fish, in my opinion it was quite overpriced for the portion size.
The broccoli dish was run-of-the-mill broccoli and sauce, but the florets weren't very fresh, or had been overcooked, and everything was mushy and the greens had lost their green and were turning yellow. Very mediocre.
We asked "What is in the Shanghai Greens veggie dish?" they answered "Shanghai Greens." I asked for clarification "what kind of vegetables is it?", they answered "oh, bok choy." Perfect, this is exactly what my wife wanted. Little did we know, after getting it, that it was about 30% bok choy and 70% these weird Asian mushrooms that made the whole dish taste pretty terrible. We did not like it at all and did not eat it.
Overall our $65 meal was an overpriced disappointment, and we probably won't be going back here unless we really can't find a better Chinese restaurant.
Well years ago when it opened it was one of the best in the area, if not the best. Â Over the past couple of years it has gone downhill in service and quality. Â The atomosphere is great, but the food could be better. Â It seems that if you eat there it is much better than if you order take out. Â Either way I have eaten here MANY times and I have seen and heard of the decline not by just my experience, but by others I know. Â The best place now is La Dalat in Hull, more expensive, but worth the quality of food and service...they are ALWAYS happy to serve you unlike Feng Shui. Â That is my recommendation...from someone who LOVES Asian food!!!
Review Source:Basic meal of chicken fingers, house fried rice and Peking ravioli's. No complaints. Decent service. Clean restaurant. Food didn't leave me feeling gross after, which is a plus. It didn't blow me away by any means, but I'd eat there again the next time I want Chinese, which doesn't happen all that often.
Review Source:I have been coming to Feng Shui for years. Â I love Chinese food and find this is as good as it's going to get anywhere around the S. Shore. Â The food is not greasy, flavorful, veggies cooked to perfection, meats tender and delicious, menu is quite expansive. Â The buffet is simply the best around with a lot of vegetarian and meat choices as well as appetizers and sushi. Â The service is always friendly and fast, and drinks are excellent. Â I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. Â I highly recommend!
Review Source:My companion & I ate here last night before heading to the South Shore Music Circus which is right down the street. We eat Chinese maybe once every other month and as with any restaurant, ethnic themed or otherwise, we expect to be dazzled for our hard earned money. Happens less than we would like. This place hit a home run. From the moment our waitress greeted us in a friendly, timely manner to the quick service and outstanding food. We split two apps & two entrees including a sizzling seafood platter & crispy boneless duck. We both agreed it was some of the best food we had found in a while. If that wasn't enough, this place has incredible desserts including a limoncello gelato and gelato in other flavors. Didn't expect to find that in an Asian theme. The only minor issues were my companion found a small piece of lobster shell in her food & our waitress, although a sweetheart, was a little OVER attentive. She only had three tables including ours and was so ahead of the game that she was a bit too social with us. She probably stopped @our table every 10 mins (at least) to confirm that we were enjoying ourselves. It was a minor annoyance for me, much more so for my companion. She was eager to please & had a great smile; she just had way too much time on her hands. That aside, I will eat here again. The food rocked!!!
Review Source:Why haven't I written a review for this place yet? I've been coming here since High School, and I even had my HS graduation dinner here. The food has always been top notch and for a decent price too. While it isn't cheap greasy chinese take out, it's even better - quality and generous helpings. The restaurant itself is large and I've never had to wait for a table for more than 10 minutes no matter what the occasion. I'm sad I'm not living near here anymore, but it is just another reason to go home more often!
Plus, since it's been around for years, it MUST be good. The picky WASPy people of Scituate and Cohasset usually don't let anything survive that they don't like.
Tonight was our 2nd experience with this joint and it was just as bas as the first. My wife said the shrimp tempura was the worst she's ever had. I had the spicy tuna maki...not awful but not good. The spider roll was just confusing. I had to give up after my third bite of some type of shell. The people are very nice but the food just ain't for us.
Review Source:Man, I love sushi and I love it when I find a place that does it right - this is one of those places. Â Ordered the Tuna Don and requested it be made with white tuna - outstanding, very pretty presentation. Â The husband ordered the sushi deluxe and we were very pleased. Â They forgot to bring the husband his soup and salad until I inquired, which frankly the garden salad was so big we thought perhaps they had just forgotten the soup. To compensate for this mistake we were given a comp seaweed salad and a wave of apologizes. Â The fish is fresh and the pieces are a good size. Â The house salad is huge and oh so good. Â The miso soup is very heavy on the seaweed and tofu - nice solid soup not overly brothy. Â Good fast service, nice presentation, priced well. Â We will certainly be back.
Review Source:This review should have been written over a year ago.  That's when I went there for their buffet brunch on a Saturday.   The buffet selection is not big, but the food is very fresh and better than average for a Chinese buffet.   There is an adequate amount of sushi selection.   The only setbacks are  the soup is only one bowl per person and the speed with which they bring out more sushi.   I love hot and sour soup and would usually have 3 cups when going to a buffet restaurant, so the one cup/bowl limit is unsatisfying.   As for the sushi and sashimi, they are slow to come out and the sashimi are cut very small.  They are fresh, so I guess fresh and small is better than bad and large.    Â
How can this be the same Feng Shui Restaurant or chain  that is getting all the bad reviews?     Are they run by the same people?   I haven't ventured out to the Natick location because of all the bad reviews.  But if someone can tell me whether they are related or not... thanx.
I really love Chinese/Asian cooking and when I moved to Cohasset not long ago I was delighted to see Feng Shui. Sadly, the exterior is far more satisfactory than the interior. The restaurant is very large and the management and wait staff seems eager to be helpful. Each time I try a new Chinese place I, by way of very unsophisticated benchmark, order dumplings and sweet and sour chicken. The dumplings were very thick and the pork a cylindrical wad inside..barely cooked and very little flavor. Not even close to being good. The sweet and sour chicken was basically fried chicken strips with a godawful neon, vile, sweet red sauce. I don't think anybody in the kitchen even tried. Sure, these dishes are simplistic and perhaps chefs don't even care about the basic stuff; Still this is the way I draw a baseline. Frankly I think the good people of the south shore are just desperate for a passable Chinese restaurant...Feng Shiui ain't it. The place is expensive too. Poor food at a high price.
Review Source:We've been coming here since the place opened. Â I remember people raving about it at first but I've always found it just okay. Â Some dishes are better than others and not consistently. Â You could love a dish one time and then find it was not as great the next time you tried it. My husband could eat here all the time but I sometimes leave here thinking, "why did I bother?" Â Such was the case last night. Â I ordered the pad Thai...I know, not a Chinese dish but it's on the menu. Â I ordered it with shrimp and veggies..no chicken, and I asked that the chef use a light hand with the oil. Well, it was still too oily and some of the noodles were undercooked. Â I ended up wishing I had selected something else. My husband got the buffet (Sundays only) and as always, was happy with the array of choices including select types of sushi. Â For me, buffets are nothing more than laboratories for collecting bacteria specimens although in fairness this buffet looks well kept up....but still.
The manager and all the staff are always so friendly and accommodating. Â I want to love this place because it's local. Â Please, Feng Shui, step it up a couple of notches. I want to be able to really fall in love with you and not just like you. Â Maybe next time my husband has a craving, I'll suggest sitting at the bar, sharing a Scorpion bowl and I'll just have a couple of apps.
Everytime we have anything to do with this place we are disappointed. I waited until I went three times to write this review and I was really hoping it wouldn't come to this. Their menu descriptions are unclear. The service is disjointed and harried. The ingredients are sub-par considering the prices. I feel as though I have wasted my time and money even going three times. Save yourself.
Review Source:Not quite 4 stars, but I definitely enjoyed my dining experience here. Â The service was great, and the sushi was better than I expected it to be. Â Feng Shui is a HUGE restaurant located in one of Cohasset's shopping plazas. Â The room is open and inviting, with various dining "rooms" (the dividers don't really obstruct your view of each "room"). Â I noticed the buffet set up near the front of the restaurant, but we were seated in the farther end of the restaurant away from it. Â The restaurant is bright and well-kept, and the hosts and servers were very friendly. Â
Even though I was impressed by the appearance and atmosphere of the restaurant, I was still skeptical about how the food would be. Â My dining partner and I ordered two cups of miso soup to start with, a selection of sushi, and a half order of the Beijing duck. Â The miso soup was typical of a Japanese restaurant while the sushi was excellent. Â We had ordered the Spring Flower Maki (8 pieces), the Spicy Tuna Maki (6 pieces), and am 8-piece "Fire" maki listed on the Specials menu (I hate that I can't remember the name!). Â The Spring Flower Maki was very good; I like the extra crunch that comes with it. Â The Spicy Tuna Maki was delicious as well as always being a staple choice for me. :) Â The "Fire" maki...oh.my.goodness. Â My mouth really felt like it was on fire! Â You know that feeling when something is so spicy that it makes your eyes tear, where your water and the scorpian bowl you're sharing isn't enough to stop the pain? Â Well that was the feeling I had, but, boy, was that sushi good. Â And even though I could only handle two pieces of the fire that night, I would definitely order it again. Â The flavor was intense, and I enjoyed the heat very much. Â My DP and I definitely have eyes that are bigger than our stomachs because, although we didn't need it, we also feasted on the half Beijing duck. Â For $18.50, this dish included "tender Long Island duck marinated and expertly roasted to achieve moist meat yet with crispy skin." Â It was also served with pancakes, scallions and cucumbers. Â Our waitress made the duck wraps for us, one each per our request. Â These were good, but I was so full by the time I ate my wrap that I wasn't able to enjoy it as much as I should have...
With very full stomachs, we had to wrap almost half our meal to take home. Â Now, I'm usually sketched out about leftover sushi, but it was so good that I wanted to give it a chance (especially since I knew that I would crave more the next day). Â Our waitress was so nice in packing up all the food; she also included all the fixings for our duck wraps. Â The bill certainly racked up, but I expect to pay a good amount of money whenever I'm eating sushi. Â It was definitely worth it, and I hope to return again to try more maki rolls.
For my "Sushi" list: 4 stars
P.S. The sushi was fantastic the next day. Â She had even packed up the extra ginger I had requested. Â :) Â Also, the Fire maki was actually less intense after being refridgerated, but it was still yummy. Â It's just lovely when your leftovers can still taste just as good the next day.
Got take-out from here tonight with my sister. I felt as though the food we got (beef lo mein, shanghai noodles and scallion pancakes) were just ok, nothing special.
Maybe I'm used to a different style of cooking (a couple family members own Chinese restaurants), but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't go out of my way to come in here.
Where to start...After living in Boston for 5 years, and having to suffer through what I thought was "good" Chinese food, I now realize what I was missing. Â We first ordered some takeout from this place, which was quite tasty. Â But it was after one of those long days of moving, and I think anything would have tasted good. Â I did remember that the place looked pretty nice inside when I picked up the goods.
Fast forward a few weeks, when we decide to grab a bite on the way home. Â It's Friday night, so we decide to sit up at the bar so we can watch the Sox and have some drinks. Â The bartenders were very good - people were pouring in throughout the evening, and they still kept a close tab on our drinks. Â Food came out and it was really tasty. Â We went with some staples: Moo-shu Beef, Lo mein, dumplings, egg rolls. Â We opted to skip the scorpion bowl, but they do make a mean G&T and Mai Tai. Â We took some leftovers home, and there were still awesome the next day.
What really shocked us it that we didn't have that gross MSG hangover that we always get when eating take-out Chinese food in Boston (you know who you guys are!). Â This place is great, and I highly recommend it if you need Chinese or Japanese food in the area.
I came here on a nice happy Wednesday for a dinner with familial-related individuals. Â It's located right in the Stop & Shop plaza, in with the Blockbuster. Â
We ended up having a variety of different foods: Â crab rangoon, shrimp shumai, 5 different types of sushi (California, Spicy Tuna, Catepillar, Rainbow, and Volcano), some boiled thingie, and some dessert.
The food itself was incredibly tasty: Â the Volcano and Spicy Tuna were quite spicy, the shumai and rangoon were a good start, and the rest was also quite delectable. Â The desserts seem to be from an outside place, so while they're good, they're not made on site. Â I'm not taking off for that, as they are quite good (I had a chocolate gelato bear that was mmmmm), but it's something to note.
The presentation here is particularly impressive: Â The catepillar looked like a catepillar; the other three sushi options were also presented very well. Â The most impressive was easily the Volcano, which came out by itself looking like (what else?) a volcano. Â This was probably the most impressive part of the meal.
All of this, along with the incredibly helpful, friendly, and good service, made this an incredibly good meal, and a great place to go for some food when you're out on the South Shore.
Feng Shui doesn't provide free rice. Â They also don't deliver (which really bugs me- what use is a Chinese restaurant without freaking delivery, dammit). Â Luckily for Feng Shui, their food is pretty damn good and even my Chinese food hating dining companion (he lost the coin toss) warmed up to his General Tsao's Chicken pretty quickly. We did take out, so I cannot comment on the service or the ambiance of this place (though friends of ours swear that it's fantastic as an eat-in experience), but the food that we got was actually worth the entire process of getting my lazy ass out of pajamas to pick it up. The Egg Foo Yung was surprisingly lacking in the grody greasy quality it can have from lesser restaurants; the hot and sour soup had just the right amount of heat- it took you just to the point of sweating from your upper lip without pushing you over into sweating from your forehead. Â Five stars for sure on the food, but I'm subtracting a star because it requires me to mobilize and drive to get it. Yes, I'm penalizing them for my own laziness. Ain't that a bitch?
I'll still order from here, get off my high horse, and go get it because it's better than your average Chinese place.
