We really wanted to like this place :(

We've been twice and have tried several items at this point (egg rolls, chicken fried rice, chicken and broccoli, chicken lo mein, General Tso's, fried biscuits, etc.). The egg rolls are super crunchy and delicious, which lead us to think that maybe all of their deep-fried food was the bomb. This led to the General Tso's, which was super duper grossly soggy. The fried rice was bland and boring, the chicken and broccoli was kind of slimy, and the chicken lo mein was just nothing to write home about.

We don't really care about a restaurant's decor, so while it is bad, it doesn't factor into this (and we got take out both times anyway).

Upsides are that it's super cheap and you get 3 meals out of it. The egg rolls and fried biscuits are definitely yummy. Sadly, we probably won't be back and will continue our hunt for delicious Chinese food :(

(I would otherwise give them a one-star rating, but in their defense, I did not bring the poor quality of the food to their attention and give them a chance to make it right.)

My dinner left a bad feeling in my tummy for several hours after I ate.   I should have left the food uneaten, asked for my money back and just left.   But I hate to rush to judgement.  "It's a popular place, it can't be bad" I thought.

    Food:
    1)  First sign of things to come was a stale cooking smell in the parking lot.  The smell of old oil or grease.  Not as if it were coming from a dumpster that needed emptying, but from the range hoods in the kitchen.

    2) They used canned mushrooms instead of fresh.  Usually a bad sign.

    3) Soggy chicken.  It had been cooked, as in raised to the temperature necessary to kill the bacteria, but the texture of the chicken was under-cooked. Soggy.

    4) Fried rice.  Ick.   It was like it had been sitting around too long, and tasted as if fried in bad or old oil. (Ya gotta COMPLETELY change the oil once in a while, not just keep adding new oil to the old oil.)

    5) The deep fried egg roll was a greasy gut-bomb.  Tasted like old oil again.  The insides were either not fresh, or else made bad tasting by the oil.  I did not finish it.

Ambience/decor is about 35 years old.  Past time to remodel.  Old, tired, and what appeared to be a dingy film on everything, as if it needs a deep cleaning or repainting/etc.   Cleanliness in the dining area was acceptable, as in table-tops wiped down, and floor was clean, or at least had been vacuumed.  The ordering and waiting area was okay in cleanliness.

Men's room needed remodeled.  Dividing panel between the urinal and toilet was rusted out and kind of disgusting.   The men's room  may have been surface cleaned recently, but needed a thorough deep cleaning.

The soap dispenser wasn't even a cheapy pump type of hand-soap dispenser, it was a bottle of dishwashing liquid , that you had to grab and turn over to get the soap out.   Excuse me, I don't want to touch that.

Hot air hand dryer, no towels.  Take in a napkin, so you don't have to touch the door handle on the way out.

These people have given up,  I don't see how they stay in business.

Quite possibly THE BEST egg rolls in town. HUGE. CRISPY. Perfectly seasoned. This Indy Original has that broken in dive feel hipsters love! IF you can brave Shadeyland, that is!

I love Foon Ying. The place is a hole-in-the-wall, but the food is excellent.  The entire place looks a little shady, but I assure you, it isn't.  It is inexpensive, and the lunch special is the best deal in town.  For $6, you must get several pounds of food.  You can easily stretch it out to last for two (or three) meals.  My favorite dish is the cashew chicken--and they'll make it spicy upon request.  The egg rolls may be their true specialty.  Their wanton soup is also truly excellent.

I used to eat there for lunch everyday.  Since it certainly isn't the healthiest food in Indy, I have to make it a treat nowadays.

You owe it to yourself to check out this restaurant.

Serious Issue: This place is too far for me to drive to from Broad Ripple for Chinese takeout.  I truly wished this place was in the Broad Ripple area as, thus far, it is the best "takeout" comfortable Chinese restaurant I've yet been to in the City.  There's some fancier Chinese restaurants that I enjoyed the food at better, but they are all more expensive and not places I would frequent on a more regular basis.

The hot and sour soup was spectacular.  I had the Curry Chicken stir fry, some Lo Men (a friend ordered), and the egg rolls.  The egg rolls were enormous--equivalent to two egg rolls at most other restaurants.  Sadly, I'm not really into egg rolls, so I wasn't a huge fan, but this was only because of my own personal taste.  These rolls were definitely above-standard.

The hot and sour soup was delicious, which is fortunate, as I rarely return to a Chinese restaurant if I don't like the hot and sour soup.  I'm not quite obsessed with it, but I find it to be one of my favorite treats at any Chinese restaurant.

I ordered a regular sized portion, not realizing how big it was.  It ended up feeding me for 2-3 meals, by itself!  The curry, soup, and egg roll ended up feeding me for 4-5 meals, so be prepared for leftovers!

I went here after the recommendations of two people. My fat hungry cousin, & my friends dad who drives from the south side to eat here.

I ordered sweet & sour chicken combo, & the fried biscuits. The biscuits had powdered sugar instead of actual sugar which was different to me, but OMG they were SO good! I paid $3.00 for 10.

The sweet & sour chicken was a little different. The sauce was a little more runny than I'm used to, & the pieces of chicken were also smaller than usual. It was still SO good, & my picky son ate it. Mmmmmmmmm the egg rolls, were good they were thicker than a roll of quarters, & I would say longer than a hot dog.

Overall this was the best chinese food I have had in a mighty long time. I will definitely be eating this again.

My family orders from here every time we do Chinese as a family. After experiencing other Chinese joints around town, I can say that this is one of the best. The food is always fresh, and they are very generous with the portions. The staff is always friendly. There is not much room to eat in the restaurant, so I would recommend taking out. I would say this is the best Chinese in the Lawrence area.

surrounding neighborhood is a little dicey and the dining area is a little dingy, but dont let that stop you from at least sampling what this restaurant has to offer.

it should be known that portion size here is huuuge and 2-3 people could eat off one meal. and yes, the egg rolls are huge, greasy and delicious. enjoy!

Authentic or not...excellent food...prepared with care...and obviously fresh ingredients..

...seems everything is house made...just doesn't have that "fresh out of the freezer"...americanized..chinese taste..
