Best Bar In Town!! Drove from San Jose just because I was refereed by a friend. Awesome people got to admit they've got pools, food, drinks and game shows what not? I mean this place is like the best place to dive in with a few friends for a drink or just to catch up on some things. Could definitely come here again sometime soon. Cheers!

There were some shady charachters in this establishment as expected.

Drinks were cheap and Kareoke was painfully terrible..Honestly was not that bad for a 12AM stop.

I like this place. I came here on a Friday with a friend and the place was not packed at all. Everybody seemed like a regular there but the bartender was friendly and the drinks are pretty cheap. They have a lot of interesting decorations on the wall.

I'd like to meet the real Fred someday. I have a feeling he's a cool dude.

So people call this place a "dive bar," but it's really not that divey. I go to Fred's fairly often after work with coworkers, and I always feel comfortable there (even in a group of all women).

It's an unassuming joint from the outside, but it's decently clean and comfortable inside. It has a very "local" vibe, and the people are friendly enough.

The best part - drinks are cheap. They usually come out to about $5 a drink, which is mighty fine by me.

An undiscovered, great dive bar.   From the road, it looks dodgy, even though it has a classic neon sign.  Inside, it's basic, but  long and huge, and has games booths, chairs, and barstools.   Has TV's, but thankfully the sound does not play.  Decent jukebox.  Totally unpretentious, friendly crowd of all ages, and best of all,  cheap drinks..   Ample parking, and a back door to make a secret exit if you need to.

Best bar in the area. Pool table, darts, foozball, pinball...
It's always happy hour, great pours and great prices. Free snacks and every weekend seems to have some kind of of pop up food venue. NFL ticket, multiple hi-def tvs and free wifi. Patio too. No attitude just a place to chill, have some good conversation and have a laugh. Karaoke on Thursday night too, if you're into that kind of thing.

I like this bar but I don't know what's wrong with the bartender Here. Don't show you Respect didn't want to talk you don't want to make the drinks the way you want. The need to improve their customer service.

I know people call this place a dive, but I have been to a lot of dive bars and I honestly think this place is just a little nicer than a dive bar.  It's more just a bar that's maybe a bit divey (please note, to see what I think of a really dive bar check my review on Springwater in Nashville, TN).

I first decided to come here after checking reviews on Yelp for Karaoke.  I love karaoke and I'm always trying to find a good place to go.  Fred's was fun.  I came here with my brother and sister-in-law to sing a little and drink a little while they were in town.  As a hang out spot, I think it's top notch.  It's laid back and the people are nice.  It's seems like a place that you can easily go up and talk to anyone because they are all there to hangout and drink a few beers.

As for the karaoke.  It was good too.  The guy had a lot of choices and if he didn't have the song you wanted to sing then you could probably just ask him.  There wasn't a lot of people there so we could pretty much sing as much as we wanted.  The only problem I had with the karaoke is the mixing.  I'm a snob.  I took some Audio Engineering classes at University and now when ever I go to a concert or hear/sing karaoke I can tell when the sound quality isn't on top of its game.  But, like I said, I'm a snob.  I don't think that would stop me from going back.  It's not the worst, it just could be better.  The worst I ever heard was in London and that did keep me from going back.

All in all, I say go.  Have a few laughs with a few beers and maybe sing a few songs.

This is what a good bar should be like: low key, jukebox, one pool table, a bunch of beers on tap and some neon signage. Folks with low expectations ain't never been let down...

What a fun little dive bar! It was the first time I did kareoke and it wasn't so bad, the crowd was pretty inviting (and a little drunk) and they have soooo many songs to choose from. There's a pool table and dart board in the back, a long table in the middle and a few tables off to the side. The perfect place to just catch up with friends over beers. I'm looking forward to coming back although its a little out of the way for me.

I've been here a few times for karaoke (Thursday) with friends. It's fun when it isn't too packed. Also can't beat a $5 glass of wine (is this typical? In MA and NH I pay $8-$10 for the cheap stuff).

Pretty relaxed atmosphere and very friendly regulars.

I'd feel like a fraud giving 5 stars to a place I'd only been to once. and for less than one hour. on a sunday afternoon. so we'll start slow and go with 4 stars for now.

This place does have many things I like:
    1) good beer on tap
    2) booth seating
    3)jukebox
    4)karaoke
    5)local flair
    6)fiesty bartender

who is fred by the way? i'd like to meet him someday

I LOVE FRED'S!!  I live over off of Rengstorff, and for about a year since moving out here, I would drive by Fred's, curious about what it was like inside.  A couple of months ago, I rallied my boyfriend and our other friend to go, and we were NOT disappointed.

This is not the place to go to be seen.  It also seems like it is not the place to find your one-night stand.  This is the place to go to just to hang out with friends and have some drinks.  It is a bit of a dive bar, although not as divey and sketchy as other bars I've been to, but I can see how if you're used to Santana Row, this is much divier than what you might be used to.

No matter how many drinks my friends and I order here, the tab always seems to average out to $5/drink.  I am not going to complain about that.  That is cheap!  My boyfriend got pretty hammered one night and couldn't remember if he closed his tab or even tipped.  When we went back the next time, the bartender, I think it must have been Paul based upon other people's descriptions of what Paul and Chang look like, helped guestimate how much my boyfriend's tab would have been.  It came out to $5/drink and based upon the credit card charges, my boyfriend remembered to leave a good tip even in his drunken state.

Every single time I've gone, Paul has been the bartender with the exception of one time.  The first time I went to Fred's, Chang was the bartender, and he seemed friendly enough to me.  He got us our drinks in a timely mannger, and he even helped decide if my friend's hairline has receded at all since his license photo was taken back in high school.  I'm not sure why people have complained about him in their reviews, but he seems alright to me.  I wouldn't take him as a warm, bubbly sort though, but that's okay.

At any rate, I've made numerous trips back to Fred's and introduced other friends to it.  We all love it, and if we could pull our lives together more, we'd like to regularly have Friday's at Fred's.  Can't beat those $5 drinks!

Freds... i wasn't sure what to expect when we pulled into the lot... For a monday night, it had a pretty big crowd!

You walk in and there a large bar with a good selection of beer and liquor, even guiness on tap. There is a pinball machine, a golf arcade, a foose ball table, a beer pong table and a pool table - so there is lots to do while you are there. They also have a pretty good juke box with a lot of different types of music, not just the pop top 10.

There was a pretty wide variety of people in the bar - a bunch of college aged people in their early 20s, some older folks and then some other people that seemed to be in their late 20s/early 30s - just about everyone in the place seemed like they were regulars. There was also the one standard creepy older dude at the bar who was drunk off of bud light making uncomfortable sexual remarks and muttering to himself.

It was a typical dive bar, nothing fancy but it was a decent time out.

The best nights to come here are Monday and Wednesday.

Wednesday is great because the MogoBBQ truck comes along. It's hard to beat a short-rib burrito plus a nice, cold beer.

Monday, however, takes the cake. "Gay Music Monday" is a well-established tradition at Fred's. DJ Bleary is spinning the most embarrassing music known to man. Patrons can request guilty pleasures from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. You play the game right, and you can get the entire bar to sing along.

It's a dive bar. But if the owner is behind the bar (shorter Asian guy, usually wears his hat backwards and with a permanent scowl), go to another bar.

Everytime he's tending bar, he makes people wait and wait until he's finished shooting the breeze with his buddies... or who knows why. It's not personal because I've seen him do it to a lot of patrons. You sit and sit and sit, waiting for him to come and serve.

Twice out of the last three times I've gone and he's behind the bar, he never came by, I just finally got up and left. That is no way to run any business, there simply is no excuse for it.

And he hardly makes people feel like he appreciates them being there. You certainly don't have to roll out the welcome sign for people. But for pete's sake, don't make people think you are a burden, either. He just makes it seem like if you aren't one of his friends, you don't matter.

The big bartender, he's awesome. He scans his bar constantly for people who want/need another drink, he's friendly without being intrusive, just a really good bartender. But the other guy? Awful.

I have been to Fred's twice.

First I went with a bunch of friends and had a blast. They had a DJ, he could have better taste in music but its kind of a sports bar so I was more inclined to enjoy the loud music with no cover. They have a very good jukebox and quick service. Of course I was drawn to this place due to the giant neon sign out front, kind of a cool feel. And, they serve food! Beer munchies galore!

The second visit was to blow off some steam after a very frustrating day. It was me, one other patron and the barkeep on a Tuesday I believe. The bartender talked me from the ledge and the patron bought ,e some Slayer on the jukebox and an extra beer. We chopped it up about Jazz and relationships, it felt like home.

Definitely an older crowd but that has never deterred me, I really like Fred's and hope to return again.

My wife and I randomly decided to check this place out after having driven by it many times and laughed at its "old timey" martini glass sign.  We pulled up and thought that it might be empty since there were no cars out front, but it wasn't (turns out people who "know" park in the back).

We ended up playing a couple rounds of darts.  The heisman selection show was on (Toby Gehart was a nominee so everyone was watching).  Nice big screens.  I found the other patrons to be generally friendly and even started chatting with some of them about Toby while waiting for a drink.  Given the total lack of "normal" bars on the pennisula, I like this place.

This place serves its purpose.  My dad's house is a few blocks away from here and I would often walk here to meet up with some buddies there.  So um...I could drink a good amount and then just stumble home.  Perfect!

I'd say this is probably one of the best places in the area for hanging out with a group of friends -- you essentially bring the party.  The bartenders are nice.  Decent selection of draft beers.  Some TVs to watch the game.  And they have some menus too and you can order delivery.  And, they have dice!  So solid times here with a mix of dive regulars and random tech peeps.

There are also some items on Fred's menu -- a few egg things...and some other things that I never bothered to order.  Yeah...wouldn't risk it.

We live nearby but I was always leery of coming in here because we thought it might be more like Francesca's (which is a dump), but we were pleasantly surprised when we finally got adventurous and came in for a drink. The prices are good ($4 for most pints), they have about 8 beers on tap and another dozen or so in bottles, and the liquor selection is very good. From what I can tell it's quiet before 10pm even on weekends, but after it gets more crowded and a little rowdier. There's a jukebox that people kept feeding, plus a pool table, foosball table, and a pinball machine. You could definitely do worse for a neighborhood bar.

This place is a true dive bar right in the middle of Mountain View. Don't look for anything glamorous here. The (regular) patrons come here for the great heavy pours and the cheap prices.

When I worked in Mountain View, we used to come here often just to relax (drink), chat (drink), and shed some stress (drink). We would also plan bi-weekly trips to this place. Our mission was to drink excessively at Fred's Place then figure out if we we were going to go anywhere after, which was usually somewhere in Palo Alto or San Jose.

After rounds upon rounds of shots were purchased on the company's tab (pre-recession, of course), we would take over the bar and just goof off from 5:15 to about 9:30 and then we would head off to the next venue.

But before then, we would drink excessively, talk about sports, tell each other anecdotes from past Fred's Place adventures, hit on girls with missing teeth, make fun of each other, try to score promotions from the bosses, flirt with co-workers, talk shit about certain co-workers that were never invited to the fun, and dance to Van Halen, Def Leppard, AC/DC, or whatever other awesome music coming from the jukebox.

We all hoped that whatever transpired that evening did not lead to a phone call over the weekend that informed us that we would not need to come in to work on Monday.

    Good times!

Fred's has been around for ages, it's about a five minute walk from my house, and I can always get a seat here.
5 dollar Guinness, friendly staff, pool table, and steps away form the burrito triangle at Old Middlefield and Rengstorff.
Very neighborhoody kind of place with an "honest pour" - meaning they don't water down the drinks...

I've lived most of my life in Palo Alto, had driven past the place a thousand times, and finally went in just last week.

It is as a dive bar should be.  The drinks are strong, the pool table is coin operated, and it seems like people could go there to get drunk.  The crowd wasn't particularly crowd-like, which worked for the reason I was there, but there wasn't exactly a feel to the place. It didn't feel like there were people there who would or should be institutions, which I just think is a must at any dive bar.

We came here for the first time yesterday night. Some friends of ours love this bar so we thought we would check it out. Definately divey, but not in a bad way. Just a lot of old folks hanging out at the bar. We went straight for the pinball which kept us entertained for a while. It was a nice enough place. I feel that if there was a bar like this close to our house, I would defenately be there all the time.

Minus one for the following reasons:
    1) Display board on pinball was broken.
    2) The old guy playing at the pool table next to me had a lot of ass crack showing. I noticed this when I looked over and saw him bent over taking a shot. Five inches of uncovered old man ass crack. I was seriously bothered by this. Next time I will bring a set of blinders or something.

I went here last night for a friend's birthday party, which might immediately tell you something about Fred's, right?  Like, it's an awesome place to have a party?

I'll give Fred's it's well deserved props.  It's been around for a long time and has some great sports memorabilia on the walls.  There's a well kept pool and foosball table, which my friends surrounded almost the entire night.  The drinks are reasonably priced and the bartender was friendly.

Let's face it.  It has several strikes against it.  It's in Mountain View.  It's surrounded by automotive shops.  When I arrived around 10:30pm on a Friday night, the only noise were my loud friend's playing foosball.  There were around 20 other people at the bar, but it was like I was walking into a coffee shop.  So when my friends eventually got quiet when they all took shots, it was uncomfortably silent.  And I don't want that from a bar!  Granted, it did get better around midnight, but Fred's just doesn't seem to have the draw like some of the other bars on the much more active Castro Street.

So go here if you must, but don't go out of your way to get here.

I've sunk to a new low.  No, really, I have.  I don't understand how I let my friend drag me to such places.  Anyways. so, yes, this sports bar has wifi.  The literally bought a Linksys router and plugged it into their internet connection.  I mean, sure, leave it unencrypted for the customers and leave the SSID named "linksys" so people can easily hack it.  I thought about toying around with it and changing the accounts, but that would be mean, right?  *sigh*

I'm a little baffled that no one has batted an eye with me bringing a laptop in here.  The place is a little crowded, but that's because of the way the islands are set up.

The drinks seem to be cheap: $5 pint of Guiness, $3.50 vodka tonic.  The bartender was nice.  The crowd is mixed with older guys who obviously have been going here for ages, college kids, and whatever you want to throw into the melange.  There are a few TVs scattered around, but not nearly as many as St. Stephen's Green.  They also have an arcade, foosball table, and pool table.  The decor is a bunch of sports memorabilia.

I'm not impressed, but I'm not thoroughly disgusted either.  It's a true three-star joint.

I'm raising the bar here and going with 4 stars. Lemme break it down for you one star at a time.

First, Fred's has been around for 40 years.  In the heart of start-up land, any business that has been chugging along for that long without getting acquired or running out of VC money is keepin it real.

Second, they keep their product portfolio clean and simple.  Beer and hard liq.  Sometime in about 1962 they diversified slightly and augmented the menu with chips and hard boiled eggs.  No need to add stress to an already stressful world, just pick a brew or your favorite mixed drink and have a seat.

Third, at it's heart and soul, Fred's is a sports bear for Bay Area teams and their fans.  Lots of 49er memorabilia on the walls, reliving the glory years of Walsh, Montana and Rice.  The 3-4 TVs usually have different games going on so you can split time between teams.  Decent pool table sectioned off from the rest of the bar so you don't have to move people not involved in the game when taking your shot.

Fourth, there is a mellow, keep-it-to-yourself atmosphere that is both welcoming and refreshing.  You're not getting scanned to check if you have hipster $200 jeans or, on the other end of the spectrum, the evil eye cuz you crashed a locals only joint.  Feel free to casually chat-up the other folks at the bar, or hang out with your crew and enjoy a nice refreshing beer..

Fred's is a lot of fun if you've got good childhood memories associated with faux wood paneling.  and I do.  this is the place that your favorite uncle would have built in his basement had he not spent all his money on surfboards and beer.  the walls are full of knick-knacks, tchochkeys, or whatever else you want to call them, there's fooseball, two pool tables, i think a pinball machine, and a few tables to sit at if you're not feeling up to squatting down at the bar and ordering cheap american beers and washing them down with Jager shots.  you can also get some decent weight pint glasses, and fred himself was behind the bar the last time i went.  NOTE: potential cougar alert.

Fred's is a cool little dive bar in PA that actually gets poppin sometimes.  If you go make sure to catch Kaipo with Now Time preforming their hardcore danchall show.  You can drink and smoke outside, and the crowd is cool, mainly bartenders from other bars.  Chang makes a mean mojito!
