I've been to 1st & Main more than a few times - typically pretty positive - I live walking distant from the only 'real bar in LA' which happens to serve decent food.
Tonight (Wed.) which is advertised as 1/2 off bottle wine night on their website and my first mid-week tryout was disappointing - it felt like what I'd call a 'bait & switch' - 50% off a bottle does not equate to 1/2 off that bottle apparently - even if that bottle happens to be $66 on menu and you order dinner + you order beers i.e. +100 tab - so yea I'm p.o.'ed - not at the staff but at the owner - so much so  that my wife and I will not be back. Â
Will someone with a decent head on their shoulders explain exactly what  "save 50% off ALL bottled wine (excluding wines by the glass)" - mean ? - especially when you have no offerings in bottles only on menu - oh yea they're changing the menu...; regardless I ORDERED A FULL BOTTLE FROM YOUR MENU - so why the 'confusion'?
Although the bartender 'comp'ed' me a couple beers on my bill - thank you (but still less than what I expected re: 1/2 off wine bottle); the whole experience left me with a bad taste - I'm pretty easy going and try to support local businesses - this is bs - 1st & Main - you've lost a customer.
3.5 STARS for this bustling bar located on the end of Main Street. Â Other than the colorful flags that adorn the ceilings, this place has the standard full bar and dining room that can be found in most bars. Â This place did seem to have a bunch of regulars who met up at various times during the time I was here. Â The bartending staff regularly greeted familiar faces with hugs and smiles too which is always a good sign for a good locals recognized bar.
Their happy hour goes until 6:30pm so taking advantage of it, I got some well margaritas for $5 each and an order of calamari for $6. Â The chicken quesadilla was also ordered as well but was for regular price at $10. Â The calamari was disappointing with more batter than actual squid in there...not surprising since it was a happy hour special. Â The quesadilla was actually a decent size and it must have been good because my friend ate all of it. Â
The place wasn't too packed before 5:30pm but it got steadily more packed and soon I had to start using my "club" voice where I feel like I'm shouting just to have a conversation. Â They have some special drink combos and pitchers for beer and margaritas too? Â I didn't find that out until afterwards. Â Beer selection for happy hour pricing is minimal but overall they have a couple of good selections, including Guinness.
