I haven't had much Indian cuisine prior to visiting Funky Desi, so I was a little apprehensive, but the staff made some fantastic recommendations. The food was *fantastic*, they have a great drink selection for both beer drinkers and those who prefer cocktails, and the atmosphere is great. Also, the left-overs heat up well the next day too.
Seriously, check this place out. I've been here twice in one week.
This is our second time here. The first time was within days of its re-opening (formerly Indian Rasoi) as Funky Desi. My review is based on our most recent visit.
Dined in early evening with my husband and our 8.5-year-old son. We were the third patron, and due to the time of day, a slim crowd was expected.
Wine selection is slim but I expect this to grow.
Now on to the food: OOHMAGAWD IT'S GOOD. There's a reason we came back. This place, it's chef, means business. Kind serving staff, accommodating, knows the menu. I was particularly impressed that they had a new item on the "kids" menu, a Naan pizza. Our son gobbled it down.
Appetizer: Cut mirchi. Get this. Simple and yummy with two chutneys. It took the edge off our hunger.
My husband had the Dal Makhni and me the Dal Tarka, but let's be honest: we shared. BECAUSE THEY WERE BOTH AMAZING. Each with their own distinct flavor and consistency. Piping hot. One was a little too salty, but it may have also been the garlic. (Honestly, I'm lucky to even have a husband because I love garlic so much, so the dish was just fine by me.)
Funky Desi is doing a good thing: to sheltered Americans, Indian food is scary and strange, and this restaurant tries to make it hip and fun. They don't play Indian music; there are several TVs and a couple of upright video games; the bar is beautiful with several micro and local brews. The restaurant aims to convince the outliers to just give Indian cuisine a try in a familiar environment. They're the third Indian restaurant in the Quad Cities, so they needed to set themselves apart. I say bravo! Now go eat!
