The Funky Door Bistro & Wine Room

I was visiting my niece in Lubbock, and we decided to visit The Funky Door for dinner.  The cheesesticks were amazing.  They are done in a light flaky pastry which was a nice change.  We had The Funky Door Fondue which was made with a gouda cheese and was wonderful with the bread, chicken, and steamed veggies we had with it.  For dessert we had the Bananas Foster Fondue with strawberries as suggested by the waiter.  It was delicious.  The service was great.  The only thing I did not like was the Bellini martini I had.  I would suggest trying another cocktail, but the food was wonderful.

Let me preface this review with an admission - this was my first trip to Lubbock, thus, I have no frame of reference for dining in the area. And here we go...

The Good: Lively atmosphere with a live band (if you enjoy such things) and a charming environment overall. Very attentive waitstaff and no shortage of wine selections for the oenophile's in the market.

The Bad: Winemotion dispensing systems (or a comparable substitute) and mediocre entrees. Painfully slow kitchen.

Overall: While I enjoyed environment and the appetizers, I was unimpressed with my entree. My ribeye was very dry in the center and I found myself in dire need of the demi-glace (which was more of a thick southern gravy) just to make it palatable. This was especially disheartening as there was a near 30-minute gap between appetizer and entree. Again, not being familiar with Lubbock I cannot say whether I would return but based on my initial impression, the likelihood is slim.

Recently took my girlfriend here for Valentine's Day. Everything was terrible (undercooked, overcooked, under seasoned) . The only thing that has been consistently good is the Fiesta Fondue with vegetables. Also, their Valentine's Day menu was just their normal menu minus all their pastas, which were quite good previous times I've been there.

I could have gone to a much cheaper place and had far better food. Come for the fondue then leave. I won't be returning.
