I was visiting my niece in Lubbock, and we decided to visit The Funky Door for dinner. Â The cheesesticks were amazing. Â They are done in a light flaky pastry which was a nice change. Â We had The Funky Door Fondue which was made with a gouda cheese and was wonderful with the bread, chicken, and steamed veggies we had with it. Â For dessert we had the Bananas Foster Fondue with strawberries as suggested by the waiter. Â It was delicious. Â The service was great. Â The only thing I did not like was the Bellini martini I had. Â I would suggest trying another cocktail, but the food was wonderful.
Review Source:Let me preface this review with an admission - this was my first trip to Lubbock, thus, I have no frame of reference for dining in the area. And here we go...
The Good: Lively atmosphere with a live band (if you enjoy such things) and a charming environment overall. Very attentive waitstaff and no shortage of wine selections for the oenophile's in the market.
The Bad: Winemotion dispensing systems (or a comparable substitute) and mediocre entrees. Painfully slow kitchen.
Overall: While I enjoyed environment and the appetizers, I was unimpressed with my entree. My ribeye was very dry in the center and I found myself in dire need of the demi-glace (which was more of a thick southern gravy) just to make it palatable. This was especially disheartening as there was a near 30-minute gap between appetizer and entree. Again, not being familiar with Lubbock I cannot say whether I would return but based on my initial impression, the likelihood is slim.
Recently took my girlfriend here for Valentine's Day. Everything was terrible (undercooked, overcooked, under seasoned) . The only thing that has been consistently good is the Fiesta Fondue with vegetables. Also, their Valentine's Day menu was just their normal menu minus all their pastas, which were quite good previous times I've been there.
I could have gone to a much cheaper place and had far better food. Come for the fondue then leave. I won't be returning.
I was here earlier in the year. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Pros...Nice Decor, Live Music on Certain Nights, Bar Staff is mostly wonderful, Plenty of Parking, Happy Hour Menu. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Cons....Super Expensive...We are in Lubbock. Â The Ahi Tuna Salad was a no go. Â I do not like the wine by the machine system with the card thing. Â It just seems like you are at a Carnival. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â My Girl Maci F. and I just got a bottle and chilled on a Snow Day after we bounced around to many bars in the middle of the week.
Review Source:The Funky Door offers a different experience then other places you can find in the Hub City. It is almost two separate businesses, but they blend perfectly into each other.
One side is a trendy restaurant with unusual daily specials prepared with out of the ordinary ingredients or methods. Then the other side is a full bar and self serve wine bar.
The restaurant portion is great; the food is prepared fresh and cooked exactly as specified. I always entertain the idea of getting a special but almost always end up getting a steak. Much like the Funky Door itself, even the bread is two things combined into one. The bread comes half sour dough, half rye bread that is baked together to form a single loaf... and it to is good. The (appetizer or dessert) fondu is amazing and almost worth a visit on its own.
The alcoholic side of the restaurant is a bit out of the ordinary. You can get cocktails from the bartender but the real fun lies in experimenting at the self serve wine machines. The wine bottles are on display and you walk around finding the types you want to try. Once you've made a decision you get a card that you load with some funds, then swipe it through the machine. You set your glass in front of the bottle and through some sort of Willy Wonka contraption the wine is sucked out of the bottle and into your glass. Three portion sizes are offered depending on how certain you are that you like the wine.
It's fun to experiment with the wine, but it is worth asking your server which are the best. It's a bit pricey but for a trendy hangout it is fun and different.
This place surprised me, as I wasn't expecting this nice of a place in Lubbock. There are some things they can improve upon, but I'll get to that.
You first walk in and it is a lot more hip than a lot of the same old places in Lubbock. My wife and I loved the atmosphere and felt like we were in a nice place in downtown Austin. There was a guy playing some acoustic music and it fit the mood perfectly.
We were first taken to their wine bar. This was a machine that you control by putting money on a card. This was super neat and can get addicting quickly. They showed us how it works then sat us down in what I felt was the best spot in the restaurant. It was behind a wall so we felt like we had privacy, but still could hear the music and atmosphere around us.
We got some wine and ordered a fondue platter with chicken and bread. This fondue was VERY good. We both enjoyed it and thought we should've just gotten that as our meal, but we ordered the special they had. BBQ brisket with bacon green beans, jalapeno corn bread and fingerling potatoes. This sounded awesome to us, as I had bad experiences all week with brisket, I thought this would be a nice end to our weekend. Well I was wrong. The brisket was downright awful. It was tough and the potatoes were flavorless. The green beans were very good though. I guess that's what I get for ordering brisket at a fancier bistro type place lol.
We finished the meal and went and sat in the bar area to watch the guy play. All in all this was a great date night spot for us and we thoroughly enjoyed it, minus the brisket. I recommend this place to anyone in Lubbock who is looking for a change of pace and something nice for a special occasion.
We went here for dinner on a Monday night. Â They had their mystery glass special going on, which you pick red/white and sweet/dry and the bartender picks the wine and you get a whole glass for only $2! Â I was concerned the special would be all cheap wine, but all four of our glasses were very enjoyable and listed on the menu at $9+ per glass. Â Our food was very good. I had the southwestern pasta with chicken and my wife had the fillet with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Â The steak was cooked appropriately and had a good flavor. Â We had the Funky door cheesecake which I enjoyed but my wife didn't like the red wine sauce they used as a topping. Â Their wine selection is one of the better around town and the wait staff was pretty knowledgeable. Also, I was pleased to find a very well put together beer list.
Review Source:I love this place, I started coming here before you needed reservations!
Note the above - I do not believe reservations are required however if its early in the day and you think you might want their gourmet burger (which is the best I've ever had in Lubbock) I'd call and place a reservation especially on a Friday or Saturday night. I've never had anything that I don't like. Excellent beer and wine selection, my personal go to is the house cab. I only wish they would sell you a bottle but you can only consume the wine inside the restaurant. I can't think of the name of the fondue, but the one with smoked gouda is DELICIOUS. Also, if you're going to get chocolate fondue (I like the snickers) always get marshmallow with it. It is a little pricy yes, but it's one of my favorite places in town to just relax have some dessert and a glass of wine.
As far as the wine goes - they do have the self serve machines and cards however if you sit in the dinning room, of course your waiter will bring you a glass or bottle. The cards are to allow you to try different kinds of wine. I did that on my birthday one year with some girl friends and it was fun!
OVERPRICED & OVERRATED
I would understand the prices if the food was actually good but .... sadly it is not. I purchased a groupon for this place and used it with my boyfriend. He got the pork tenderloin with pineapple. Small portion and looks like something anyone could throw together. It literally was like 4 medallions of average pork with some canned pineapple thrown on top of it. I'm pretty sure all college students could do that and call it a gourmet meal. I ordered the ahi tuna salad. The tuna was cooked nicely but it wasn't something to ooh and ahh over.. We also decided to order dessert and went with the snickers doodle fondue and a side of fruit. When it came out... I seriously thought how easy it would be to make at home. Â The chocolate wasn't even melted.. It was a chunky consistency. The fruit was... well... fruit is fruit. Just the normal grapes, apples, and bananas on a plate. Honestly, this place is a waste of money. It's funny because the older couple beside us said those exact words when they were paying their check.. Now I don't know what to do with my other groupon...
Not only do I absolutely love this place, but I adore the owners. Â The Taylors have absolutely outdone themselves on this exploration. Â The unique wine bar atmosphere is quite reaching especially in Lubbock, but the touch that was missing in!
The decor and layout is lovely and the staff is personable. Â Additionally, the food is out of this world. Â Everytime I come visit Lubbock I have to stop and make it to the Door! Â
Must visit and experience!
Went to Funky Door on New Year's Eve. Â The atmosphere was nice, they had great music -- Georgia and the Alchemists, and the food was tasty, had the assorted crostini and southwest pasta, not earth shattering but good. Â
They supplied free noise makers, party hats, etc. for New Year's which was fun and nice. Â However, I was really disappointed to hear they are reducing their beer selection which was a principle draw for me. Â I like the atmosphere, crowd and food and I like wine but there are SO FEW good, hip restaurants in Lubbock where you can have a good beer (defined as microbrew or craft beer). Â The bartender said that few people ever order beer there, but its no wonder, they never advertised they have a good selection of beer. Â On their website you would have to scroll down to the bottom of the WINE menu before discovering they even have beer?!?!
When are Lubbock restauranteurs/bars going to catch on to the craft beer craze that is sweeping the rest of the country???? Â Â
Cheers!
There is nothing romantic about dispensing wine from a cold, metal machine. It takes away the whole allure and romanticism that comes with sharing a bottle of wine in a comfortable cozy location with a lover or friends. Visit La Diosa instead. It's Lubbock- not Uptown Dallas. Way too pricey for the lack of atmosphere.
Review Source:Fun for a nicer night out in Lubbock with friends. Â They have a nice atmosphere, not too loud when I've been. Â The wait can be a bit long sometimes, but I've also been and been seated right away, so it just depends. Â I think Friday night is their live music night (at 7?), so avoid that if you don't want a wait. Probably a bit more expensive than it should be, but it's Lubbock. Â Beggars can't be choosers. Â I always enjoy their cheese and dessert fondues, their bananas foster is my favorite dessert fondue. Â I've also had the vegetable squash lasagna and really enjoyed it. Â The wine machine is a fun novelty, but you can always have the waiter or bartender pour you a glass if you don't want to get a card or don't see what you like. Â Of course, overpriced wine...but that goes with any restaurant. Â But it's a fun way to try out new wines, then get them at the store later! Â We don't go very often, but it's nice as an occasional treat for a special night out.
Review Source:The Funky Door has a large selection of wine, but it comes at a price. I would not waste my money on getting the card they offer that allows you to purchase wine from a machine. The pours from the machine are on the smaller side, and I would recommend having your server get your wine or going up to the bar. The food is OK, I limit myself to the fondue because the other entrees are very pricey.
Review Source:Our 45 minute wait turned into two hours.  Poorly trained hostess staff.  The meal was one of the worst I've ever had.  The bread cubes furnished with the cheese fondue were (I kid you not) small, seasoned hard croutons- the same ones that came on the salad.  My dry  chicken breast had the texture, shape, and flavor of a tyson pre-cooked breast patty.  The cold, mealy tomato slice on top did little to help the dish.  My spinach was half cooked, half raw, and so salty on both of our plates that we told the waitress it was inedible.  It was.  The mashed potatoes had a decent flavor with bacon chunks - had they not been tepid and runny they might've been the highlight of the meal.  The 5 small "lobster" ravioli ($20.00) tasted much like Bertolli.  Very limited menu.  You couldn't pay me to return.
Review Source:We went on a week day around 6;30pm so the wait was something like 5 minutes only. Â First thoughts ... it's trying to be a swanky wine place in Lubbock. Â The menu is limited and pricey. Â (Appetizers were good but expensive for the amount you actually get. Â The wine selection was decent but limited too and not enough by-the-glass selections. Â I was impressed, though, that they actually had dessert wines. Â Not very many places carry that.) Â Second thoughts ... it's small. Â The table for 2 really is more like a medium-sized table for one. Â As more people showed up, the place really started booming. Â Literally. Â It was loud! Â Third thoughts ... it could be a fun, once-in-awhile, date night sort of place but it needs some work. Â They gave us the order for the table next to us. Â So, my husband's food came out first while I had to wait for mine. Â By the time mine came, his food was cold. Â On top of that, my $15 kobe beef gourmet burger came well done with a crunchy (read burnt!) shell on it even though I had ordered it medium. Â It was criminal treatment to kobe beef, I tell ya! Â We'll go back again just to give them a second chance before we make our final decision. Â Final thoughts ... they're just OK.
Review Source:It's only been open a little more than a month and this is already one of my very favorite places! I've been here for lunch, for dinner and for after movie drinks and live entertainment. Great menu, great decor, attentive service, fun concept! Hard to beat the Funky Door Fondue or the Tapena Tempranillo wine! Crab hush puppies and wine/cheese platters also delight! I'll be back often.
Review Source:Another new place in Lubbock, so expect a wait. Â We used the "call ahead reservations". Â We called ahead at 7:30, were told we would be seated at 8:30, and we finally got a table at 10. Â The reservation staff is woefully inexperienced for the volume and low number of tables. Â They allow large parties and only have about tables. Â The entrees were extremely under par..charging $30 for $5 steaks won't keep u in business long. Â Salmon was fishy and overdone. Â Appetizers were interesting and tasty. Â Staff was shell shocked and inexperienced. Â Large selection of taster wines but not a selection with any rhyme or reason. Average Lubbock wanna be will thinnk they are drinking good wines, and won't know any better. Â I Â am wine guy, and putting Silver Oak in a taster bottle is a crime! Â Overall, needs polish to be considered a true wine bar.
Review Source:This place has only been open about a week, so you expect things to be a little shaky. Thank goodness the shakiness was minimal. Â
The good:
Nice wine selections, with multiple wines on "draft." Â You can buy a glass and do a tasting at their bar. Â Also, and eclectic beer selection, which my husband enjoyed.
The food was good. Â I had the squash lasagne, which was excellent. Â
The service was good. Obviously, experienced servers and bartenders.
The tables are comfortable...leather chairs with arm rests.
The bad:
The dining area is super, super small. Â We came at 6, and there was a 45 minute wait. Â The bar is also very, very small. Â Some may view this as "quaint," but realistically, in Lubbock this will just be crowded and annoying.
The wines are on the pricey side for Lubbock, and there are not enough "by-the-glass" options.
Don't even think about bringing kids here. Â Not even early. Â No boosters or high chairs. Â
Overall:
Good "date night" place. Â Come early. Â We loved the food and suggest wine by the bottle.
