Okay... I have been back 4 more times for group gatherings and can give it an okay rating for what it is.
Still the same guys lining the edge of the dance floor trolling for every woman seemingly alone for more than a nanosecond.
They will provide water after a certain time... can't remember the time. Otherwise you have to buy it. I don't drink here as I need my wits about me in the chaos. : )
They have a stage and do some acting/dancing shows around the holidays and such, and that is a fun thin.
Although the mix of music is sometimes better than others, the sound is really clear.
The age mix here is 21 to 80... I shit you not.
Finally, I found the front of the house/door staff to be super friendly.
Almost a year later, my co-workers and I met up at FunkyTown again on a Saturday night in hopes of some quality dancing.
At first I thought I was diaapointed with the night because my date stood me up. But after escaping to the bathroom where I could actually hear, turns out that everyone thought the place had gone sourly downhill.
First, the cover got raised. Instead of $6, it is now $8.
None of the bartenders were cute. They were all kinda older and not looking like they were having any fun.
The song selection stunk!! I was there from 9:30 PM till about 11:45 PM and there were only about 4-5 songs that I wanted to dance to. A majority of the entire club's patrons spent the night in their seats too. Aren't you supposed to want to dance at a club?
The carwash song never came on, and my friends and I called it an early night.
First off, I am a newer resident of KCMO. Â Since moving here I have been looking for just the right place to put my dancing shoes on. FOUND IT!! Walking up to the door, it was very deceiving, that's where the dive part comes into to play. After walking through the door, and seeing neon and black lighting everywhere, and having the first song I heard be a Michael Jackson song I was hooked! There was such a great age range, and people watching A++ Â I like that the crowd is a little bit older 'cause I'm not all about that bump and grind stuff. Yes, it still happened but it was nearly as much as an 18+ place. I danced allll night. Â It was sooo much fun, the drinks some say are pricey but they come in GIGANTIC cups and are served as doubles. Â We all had a blast! Can't wait to go back next weekend! Â It's Michael Jackson!!! Â LOVEEEEEE Now I have a place that I can take my girls when they visit from MA! So excited!
Review Source:Funky Town is people watching at its best. This is not a place that I would ever be a regular at, but it is the best place in town to have a birthday party or a bachelorette party. It can be expensive which is a drawback. Cover is $8 and then well drinks can run you $7-8 each (but with a generous pour). For the money the best thing to get is a bucket of beer ($19 for six domestics). Everytime I've been there I can never tell if people go there for "serious" dancing or if it is more just for the people watching experience. The music is awesome and the dance floor is always full enough that you can dance like an idiot (or just be bad at dancing in my case) and no one will really notice.
If you are going with a group I suggest calling in advance and reserving a table, otherwise seating will be hard to come by. If you are going to have a really large group (like 20 people) reserving the Stairway to Heaven is worth it. You need to reserve that a few months in advance. But it is an upstairs seating area that towers above the dance floor so you get a good view of everything that goes on. it doesn't cost to rent it but it is an additional $2 cover for each person to be up there. But for that you get a whole area to yourself, your own bartender, and (at least when I was up there) they laid out a bowl of pretzels and some cheese and crackers which was nice.
So while it is more expensive than going to a regular bar the dancing, people watching, and total experience are something that you need to experience for yourself.
This is definitely a fun place. Good music, everyone dances and has a great time. $8 cover, $6.50 wells. I have a HUGE problem with the fact that they charge for water before 11pm. They will only serve bottled water until late. That will probably keep me from going back, so incredibly greedy and very bad business practice. I felt bad for our designated driver. There are other fun places that don't charge for water and that is where I will take my business.
Review Source:My wife and I have been looking for a decent place for our age group. We finally hit the Jackpot with Funky Town. The overall ages while we were in there on a Saturday night was around 35 - 60, but there were some younger and some older as well. It was a very diverse crowd. It plays mainly 70/80's disco, but includes a few classic rock and a very few modern hits as well...thankfully no techno or gangster rap. Sound level is perfect...loud enough to rock you out but you can still hear each other when talking.
Unlike other reviews I have seen, the parking lot was very organized with parking spaces well marked. One negative, the lot was kinda dark. The other only negative I have is the long line to get in. There were about 200 people waiting to get in and it took us about 45 minutes. This is because they only let 2 people in the door at a time for security reasons, so it goes a little slow. Cover charge was $8.00 when we went, so they must have raised it by looking at past reviews. Still worth it. The door guy said that the long line was normal on Saturday nights.
There were several buses bringing in party groups. Many of them were dressed in 70/80's outfits and it is encouraged in the club. I am not sure how many people that are not in large groups actually dress up. Many people just wore jeans and a decent shirt/t-shirt. No sleeveless for guys, no droopy pants, no gang apparel. They do have a $2.00 coat check which was nice. Â
The place is pretty big and has many levels and lot of tables, however all the tables had been reserved. I do not know how you reserve a table but it looks like it would be the way to go. Â
We got in at about 9:30 and stayed until 12:30. The dance floor was busy the entire time. The interior is done nicely with a 70/80's theme and they have little areas set aside to be able to socialize. There were pool tables and an outside patio for smokers. Restrooms were clean. They serve food but we did not eat so I don't know how the food is. Â I had a tequila and orange juice - $7.00, and the wife had a margarita - $7.00. About normal except that the drinks are larger than normal...almost double in size. Drink lines went fairly well. Maybe one, two songs max to get through and get a drink. Â
Security is pretty tight. They patrol around and keep things on the up and up. They are strict about no drinks on the dance floor and women in the men's bathroom...yep, four out of the 6 or 7 times I went to the bathroom women came in. Â
All in all a great place. Everyone seemed to be having an excellent time. One last thing, don't let the Raytown address steer you away.
Met some friends there, was $6 to get in the door and two drinks cost me $14 each round - not horrible for a club. Most of the night they did play 70s/80s music, but they also played some modern stuff. The car wash was interesting to see (foam dumped from ceiling to middle of floor) and the staff dancers (I presume these couple of folks were paid to be there) were both decked out in costume and had some real watchable dance moves.
Overall a good time had by the misses (getting out in the crowd and dancing with the other ladies) and the guys (watching the ladies cavort around).
The only tick away for me was the parking; really they should do something about the randomness - but that could be just me expecting too much from a club.
I'm in love with this club! I went with friends a few weeks ago and I gotta say, it's white trash BEAUTIFUL. It's definitely my kind of place. It's a mish mash of different types of people, from young-uns like myself, to people old enough to be my parents. lol. I've been back 2 times since my first appearance there, luckily I don't live far!
There is a cover, 6 dollars. Which is not bad. The drink prices are a little on the high side, but the dancing makes up for it! I love to dance to good music, from the 70's and 80's, not the lame club music of today.
Keep in mind of the dress code, don't wear ripped jeans up there! Guys can't wear ball caps or "gangster" attire of any kind. But that's about it, you don't have to be super dressed up to go.
If you love to dance it's definitely a good time!
Funky Town is HILARIOUS. Â It is a wildly diverse group of folks and the people watching is second to none. Â The music is killer (the owner, Woody, Â DJ's himself). Â You will see it all here. Â Not a great place to meet new people, but a TERRIFIC place to bring a big group of your fun friends.
They occasionally have some of the staff put on a mini stage show for certain songs, and for the song 'Carwash' a giant, soap flinging roller brush comes down from the ceiling from above the dance floor. Â It is probably safe to say you have never been to a place like Funky Town before. Â You won't want to go every weekend, but when you have a big group and aren't sure where to head...it's a good bet that everyone will be talking about it the next day!
Went for the first time Friday night. It was the least sexy dance club I have ever seen. It really felt like Homecoming, 4A Club decor and all. Oddly well-lit. Expect '70s and '80s dance music, nothing goth, and an occasional slow dance. "YMCA" and "At the Car Wash" are requisite (the latter activates actual car wash brushes that spray foam on the dance floor), and a lot of people will do the Electric Slide and other synchronized dances. Amusing place to go if you are looking to dance, be silly, and not get picked up. $6 cover. Well vodka and soda was $6.50 while top shelf gin was $7, oddly. You can reserve tables. Apparently quite the hot locale for bachelorette parties and birthdays.
Review Source:"Let's go to Funky Town tonight and dance," suggests Sister-in-Law.
"I'm not a very good dancer," I reply.
"That's OK, you don't have to be a good dancer for Funky Town--it's more for the people watching"
She was not kidding. Â This huge retro nightclub caters to, shall we say, a more retro crowd, with party people ranging from barely 21 to senior citizens. Â The place was packed with all sorts, and the people watching was great. Â This is the kind of place where everyone has fun with no worries about if they are stylish enough--no velvet rope here! Â I had a good time, but beware the crowds--despite the space and multitude of tables, I had to hide myself away in a corner near the arcade games just to find a seat and avoid being pushed around.
