Mozzarella sticks were likely the frozen kind, but was the best tasting food we ate. Their marinara which appeared homemade was good. The fettuccine alfredo was the worst alfredo we have ever had...zero flavor and zero cheese! I think the chef used a cream of chicken soup or cream of mushroom soup and added pepper and a little parsley to flavor it...awful! Guess the high ratings were for their pizza, because the pasta was inedible.
Review Source:We have gone two times now. Â Both times for dinner. Â The first time we enjoyed our entree, but we were disappointed in the antipasti. Â Very small, a couple slices of salami, artichokes, olives, roasted peppers, but not much for the price$8!
The a/c was blasting and everyone in there was freezing. Â It took about an hour to get it turned down. Â One couple walked out.
We went this week again and we were smarter about we ordered. Â Hubby ordered fettuccine Alfredo, good and hot, but not terribly flavorful. Â I ordered spaghetti with meat sauce. Â Oh my delish. Â I will go back again just for the meat sauce! Â We really want to like this place and we are gonna keep trying.
Service, okay, I think they care more about the bar side.
How has nobody mentioned that there is DRAG QUEEN BINGO here on Thursday nights?!? Krystal Towers is an awesome entertainer and really fun to watch interact with the dive bar patrons. 9:00 pm in the lounge - be there or be square.
The staff is really nice and they like to hang out and laugh with the folks who drink here. I like that they are personable. Once you get to know the crowd you'll be good to go!
I had a really awesome Italian Salad here as well as the pizza. Both are good, the calamari was decent but not great so if you're in the mood for lots of carbs you may as well blow your diet at this joint. It's never over crowded and always a good time.
Deschute beer is served here so that's a plus. There are a ton of drink specials depending on which night you go so check it out, hang with some characters and by all means come and play some bingo! It's not for the faint of heart so put on your adult pants and enjoy this little gem!
I'm  bumping them up a star because this has to be the best lunch deal on South Broadway.  Yes, it's not the fanciest but the bartender and waitress are super friendly and the lunch deals are amazing.  We were there about 1:30 this afternoon.  There is a special lunch menu that is super cheap -- think $6-$8 or so including a salad.  They really put on the feed bag for the price.
So today we had:  A beer for her (2 for 1) and I had a club soda (trying to watch the daytime booze), 2 house salads with bleu cheese (ask for extra because they only give you a thimble full), you get a plate of really garlicky garlic knots with a bowl of red sauce to dip them in FREE, we had a colossal calzone stuffed to overflowing with ricotta, mozz, sausage and meatballs sided with another bowl of their spicy red sauce - more than enough for two.  Had  quite a bit to pack up for snacking later.
Everything was great for what it is - not Luca or Barolo but just fine American Italian lunch food. Â I'm going to try some of the pastas next time because what I saw coming out of the kitchen looked pretty darn good.
Wanna guess how much?? Â OK - $18.88 - really??? Â You'd spend more at Taco Bell. Â Oh, you can't be in a big rush. Â That monster calzone took about 20 minutes or so. Â Star off is because they had the A.C. blasting and it was freezing in there - requests for relief from the Arctic blast went unacknowledged.
Huge portions of food. Â If you eat here bring a couple of people and order just a couple of items and you will have plenty of food. Â The food is pretty good, the garlic rolls were a little under cooked in the middle would be the only gripe. Â Good beer on tap. Â The original Italian salad was good as was the calzone.
Review Source:Actually 4 1/2 for Gennaro's. What a great find, small place, kind of your generic Italian place. Â First of all they had great specials for lunch, all for $6. unheard of.
Had a great waitress, she sat down and discussed the menu...so off we went, including her. Â Ordered Tequila shots for the diners (2) and the waitress, followed by a salad of greens, salami, cheese, olives, onions...all fresh and a lot of it. I then had a Veggie pizza and my son had the peppers and sausage. The pizza was great, perfect crust topped with mushrooms, spinach, onions, green peppers and it also was huge. The peppers and sausage was very good, with the sausage seeming to be freshly made, not purchased. In fact it was evident that all of the dishes were made with a great degree of care by someone who understood flavors and presentation. I came away amazed at how such a small place could have such good food. I would image (and hope) that there is a night time crowd because the place deserves patronage...and a lunch crowd. Â A diamond in the rough, give it a try, you will like it.......pass it on.
A buddy of mine introduced me to this place a few months back. Yeah, it has that hole in the wall/dive bar feel that often provides some mystique and attracts the dialed in locals, but what will keep me coming back is their pizza and the 2 for 1 happy hour which seems to run anytime the sun is up (maybe not in summertime but....). I must admit that i have only tried their pizza at this point, but I would easily put Gennaro's in the upper echelon of Denver Pizza. The sauce seems to have an extra twang that was real nice and the crust was very well cooked (not under cooked like 80% of pizza in this country). Â Not to mention the service is frank, friendly and spot on for that environment. Â Only bummer is that I wish I lived closer.
Review Source:I'd go 2.5 stars here - my personal vote was 3, but I went with a large group and most people were pretty meh about it, so I guess that's the compromise. Â None of us tried the pizza or calzones, which are supposed to be very good, so maybe that would bring them up. Â Service was fine, they accommodated us without any trouble and did wind up separating the checks as requested, which was helpful. Â But most of the food was fairly blah. Â I enjoyed my dish, the manicotti, as it came with a tasty lemon sauce, but other than the caprese salad, not much else stood out. Â The garlic bread and knots needed more garlic. Â The cream sauces apparently didn't have much flavor. Â I'm told the soups were pretty mellow too. Â I wonder if they have a new cook or something, but it seems like almost everything was under-seasoned. Â I'm not a salt fan, but a bit of fresh herbs or pepper probably would have livened up some of the entrees. Â They do give you a good amount of food for a very reasonable price though, so bonus points for that, as well as for carrying Deschutes beers. Â All told, probably not enough to recommend a return trip, since I know several good pizza places right in the immediate area, and the pastas weren't interesting enough to draw me back in there. Â Oh well.
Review Source:If you find yourself on the margin of Denver and Englewood on the South Broadway corridor and want some food with your drink, you could do worse than stopping at Gennaro's. Â They have Deschute's beers on tap, decent drink specials that change nightly, and pizzas that just reek of garlic powder. The whole place reeks of garlic powder, come to think of it. The kitchen is slow. So are the bartenders. It's easy to feel ignored/unwelcome at Gennaro's, but they serve food till One o-clock and drinks till 1:45. Stay away from the artichoke dip unless you like warm mayonaise. Hang out on the smoking patio and someone is likely to pass you a joint, if that's your thing. The patrons are friendly that way.
Review Source:I walked into an old time rectangular bar with checkerboard tile flooring; Genneros has a very nostalgic feel about it. Â After giving it a once over, I sat myself at a red vinyl booth. Â My eyes wandered from the electric jukebox, to the dim bar lights, and back to the flashy flooring; I felt like I had just traveled back in time to meet Buddy Holly for milkshakes.
I couldn't help but notice that the bar was filled with young and weathered locals; Englewood's finest. Â The crowd was heavily influenced by the never-ending flow of Deschutes on tap. Â These same patrons were also very influenced by their PBR, Rolling Rock, Coors, Budweiser, and the typical spirits you can find at most other bars. Â You can tell by the way the bar area is set up that Genneros has been around quite a while considering the bathrooms barely fit a single person. Â I wasn't exactly sure what I had just walked into, but I liked it. Â The welcoming was warm and I knew I had a place here.
Separated by a long glass window and two swinging doors, is a small quaint dining area, somewhere I would bring my grandmother.  There is a full coffee bar at the far end, and the rest of the room consists of ordinarily cliché gingham print seating areas.  The two halves of the establishment couldn't be more different.  But hey, I guess this is a place for everyone.
I ordered the garlic knots for $4.00, and they were well worth it. Â Trust me when I say this, I have had many knots in my day. Â They are much different from The Garlic Knot or Vergilios's knots, very authentic. Â Fresh dough, tied and lightly brushed with butter and garlic, then baked to golden perfection. Â I had a slice of veggie pizza for a fair price along side of the knots, and I was stuffed. Â They have a long menu of delicious Italian dishes for anyone, including my vegetarian self. Â Regardless of what you order here, the portions are huge, and you without a doubt get more than what you pay for.
slowwwwwwwwwww food. Â I went in there at about 5pm on a Thursday night. Â There was no one in the dining area and a few in the bar. Â I ordered the spaghetti and garlic knots and waited...and waited. Â The cook wasn't in the middle of a rush as he saundered around the kitchen. Â 40 minutes later, the spaghetti arrived. Â It was OK, nothing special. Â I asked about the garlic knots and the waiter said he'd put a rush on it. Â 20 minutes later they arrived. Â They were singed on the outside and doughy on the inside.
I think Gennaro's was a restaurant with a bar and is now becoming a bar that has some restaurant food.
Came here with a late-night craving for pizza. The main restaurant was closed but the bar and karaoke scene were in full swing. Shared a DELICIOUS and huge calzone (aptly named the Colossal Calzone) while listening to the locals howl out tunes. The calzone was awesome, definitely recommended. Otherwise, just a fun neighborhood hang out. Can't wait to revisit for some pizza.
Review Source:I heart me some Gennaro's! WIll eat their Colossal Calzone every chance I have to indulge in the 3 types of cheeses and amazing marinara sauce. Their spaghetti is also really good. And $12 bottles of wine? This place is ridiculously good, especially for the price. Love the old signage and the classic appeal. Always a friendly face serving too.
Review Source:This place is walking distance from my house, and that's awesome! Â Stopped in last night (Tuesday is happy hour all day!) to check it out for the first time. Â This is a neighborhood place for sure (I'm fairly certain that at least everyone in the bar area was a regular), and not the largest (I didn't see a table that could seat more than 4, so maybe not the best for a large group). Â If you don't prefer to eat in the bar there's a whole other side that's quieter. Â The food was solid and came out quickly after we ordered, service was awesome (changed the channel on the nearest TV for us, made excellent drink recommendations, super friendly). Â I read some of the previous reviews and kept looking for a downside but never found one, I'll be back!
Review Source:I absolutely love this place Jessica makes some strong ass drinks and the Karaoke on Monday nights is awesome. They have some of the best pizza I've had in Denver (which says a lot because of places like Famous Pizza and Sexy Pizza making it a close second) Plus, they have a lot from the Deschutes brewery on tap. Come check it out, especially on a Monday night for karaoke.
Review Source:Moved into the area and found this little bar. I initally tried it a couple of times just to insure this was not a "1 time bad experience situation" which it wasn't .
My expectations were that the food would be the typical bar pizza type ... blan and with minimal cheese and sauce. AND IT IS! The pasta sauce is tasteless and nothing worst than washing it down with a warm draft beer. Frosty mugs would do the world of difference. All you can eat pasta Sucks! The best thing on the menu is the Italian salad. Not missing much if u pass this joint.
Ooh Gennaro's. You started out with such magnificent potential, then kind of plummeted. The $6 lunch is a great deal, but do not come here if you're on an hour lunch...strike that, hour and a half lunch...you'll be here a tad longer.
My coworkers and I came here at 12:30 on a Friday afternoon. There was one table of four already eating, and a couple who had just got their appetizer. There were 7 of us and right off the bat the waitress seemed perturbed that we should be so inconsiderate as to bring a large group in there. We waited in the bar and grabbed our free beer with the yelp checkin special, and the gentleman behind the bar suggested the lasagna with gusto! He was very friendly, and also helpful.
We were seated pretty quickly, but the lone waitress chose not to hide that we were the last thing she needed on her bad day. She was frantic, disorganized, and seemed in a panic with her every action.
We ordered the garlic knots which were delicious, but probably would have been better if she hadn't left them sitting on the counter for 6 minutes before the cook had to bring them to our table.
Then the wait...
And wait.....and wait and wait. At this point everyone in the restaurant had been served except our table. And the waitress continued to bang around, making all of us noticeably uncomfortable. Â
The food came out. It was decent. Nothing to call home about, and definitely not something to potentially risk this experience again. Call in and pick up? Maybe if I'm really craving Italian. But otherwise, sorry Gennaro's.
This is a gem of a dive bar on South (and I mean South) Broadway! With a nice, giant island bar in the middle of the bar, there's sure to be a seat ready and waiting for you.
What struck me about this place is how much of a neighborhood bar it is. While I was there, I watched about 80% of the people in this bar intermingle from one group to the other and they just sort of hung out all day, drinking and telling stories.
Since I tend to order appetizers as entrees, I got mozzarella sticks and fried mushrooms. I just wasn't in the mood for pasta. But who isn't ever in the mood for fried things? The cheesesticks were awesome as were the fried mushrooms. Though, it is pretty hard to screw those up.
The staff was incredibly friendly and they seemed like more of a family than a group of employees.
Seriously, this bar is kind of like a "Cheers" type of bar. Everyone knows everyone and if you're a newcomer, it does not matter. They will sit down and talk to you for a while too.
Hands down some of the best pizza in Denver! I was a little nervous walking in as the exterior has you expecting an 80's lounge full of smoke and creepy guys with big gold chains. Don't let it fool you! It was actually pleasantly quaint, and the food is worth getting around the crazy construction on Broadway.
We split a Meat Monster & Mediterranean. Thin and well-seasoned crust, lots of toppings, just enough grease (not 'blot' worthy, but not dry), and reasonably priced. We also ordered some calamari and garlic knots. Calamari - Â so-so, Garlic knots - amazing. Oh, and Deschutes beer - always a favorite.
The only reason I do not give 5 stars is the service wasn't stellar. Not terrible, just... lacking.
We will definitely be back!
This place is a total trip. 50s Retro style bar area (think red pleather booths), divey/local crowd, Eagles & Amy Winehouse & some random country on the jukebox, cool little patio out back, and a restaurant area separate from the bar.
I was expecting just PBR by the can, but no, they had virtually the entire Deschutes lineup, Organic, IPA, Porter. And, totally reasonable prices.
The Tiscani pizza with the roasted red peppers and spicy sausage and ricotta was fantastic! Even the crust was great (I am not a crust eater). The crust was like an herbed breadstick, delicious!
We will most definitely be back for Drag Queen Bingo on a Thursday night. We had to leave early, but what we saw/heard was hilarious and I'm sure will make for a fantastic evening!
Well, their fettuccine alfredo tastes like the sauce came out of a jar (not awesome). Â But, for $6 that includes a nice green salad and bread, things even out (sort of).
Warning: their garlic bread is just that. Â GARLIC with some bread. Â Yowsa. Â Don't take a first date here (with plans to make out later), or if you do, make sure you both chow down on that stuff.
My sis tells me they have karaoke-for-prizes some time during the week. Â I'd like to try my hand (er...voice) at this, but it's so out of the way I'm just not sure that will ever happen.
The 'za she had (also part of a lunch deal) seemed so-so based on the one bite I had. Â Akin to Edgewater Inn or Carl's Pizza (not as thick crust though).
I suppose I might make a return visit when I'm in the area visiting my sister. Â I would not drive all the way down here though just to go there. Â I'm not sure what the back story is behind this place, but I reckon for an independent sort-of hole-in-the-wall that serves pizza and the like, they're okay.
Gennaro's offers a $6 lunch special that might be one of the best in the city. Â The two pepperoni pizza slices I received were about the size of half a regular pizza. Â My dining partner ordered a calzone and what appeared was large enough to feed three people.
The service was great and the ambiance was that of an old school Italian restaurant.
Okay, I have never eaten here but when I stepped foot into this place I got hit in the face with Italian food smells. It left a taste in my mouth. I needed to wash it down with booze. After finding a seat at the bar among the regulars my friend and I were cracking up at how many bottles of Crystal Palace Vodka they had behind the bar. It was like at least 50 bottles. When asked if they have any Vodka the bartender simply sniffed and looked at us. After getting my drink in hand it was strong which is great since this joint is bright as hell inside. It's a loud reddish orange paint mess all over the walls. Fantastic I say... It's a great place to stop on a dive bar crawl. Or to get a shot of the Palace and a meal.
Cheers.
My boyfriend was craving Spagetti and Meatballs on his birthday so I have seen this place and wanted to try it. Â After a few good reviews read, we decided to try it.
It far exceeded our expectations! Â It's a nice arrangement and we were immediately greated. Â The bartender was great!! Â He suggested what beers to try, also suggested what apitizer to get while not sounding push. Â All his suggestions were spot on! Â
The Spagetti was a little blah, but good. Â The Chicken Fettucine was great!! Â
The locals who were there were very nice and it was an all around great experince. Â We will definally be back!!
Gennaro's, I really want to give you another star. Afterall, you are my go-to pizza place and I'd admittedly be sad if you were to go away. I just can't bring myself to upgrade to that 4th star though, as  much as I may want to.
Tip: If you like sauce on your pizza, ask for extra because otherwise it can be a little on the dry side.
It looks like it should be a dive on the outside. The guys in lawn chairs at the back door give it the mob appeal the name denotes. The place has two sides bar side- dark and old and homey, and the cafe style side light and plain and , well, homey. Both sides serve food, and that's why we went. Entrees are good, down home Italian fare. Bruchese is the bomb. Voodoo Coffee for dessert. Tonya and Irene are great. Does the little  table on the sidewalk count as outdoor seating? Only for coffee I think.
Review Source:I don't know why this place is getting low reviews, but on a whim, my boyfriend and I decided to try this place. Â It's a little rinky dinky hole-in-the-wall for sure, but that's why I wanted to try it. Â There's a small dining room, to close for my comfort, so we changed our minds and got our food to go. Â You can tell it's family and kid friendly. Â There bar was huge and empty (though it was only 3 in the afternoon) but nonetheless, appeared to be a local's type of hangout. Â The food took about 15 minutes, but damn it was worth the wait.
I had the chicken alfredo and he had the baked ziti. Â IT'S FRESH. That's my biggest pet peeve is when you go to a supposedly authentic italian joint, but they don't make their own pasta. Â Flavors were all present and I was very happy and impressed. Totally felt like I was back home in North Beach. Â No fuss, no muss, real good italian.
What the heck??
I used to really enjoy the spaghetti sauce from this place and now it was just bleh. This place was under new ownership as of Nov 2008 but they kept the name. How does that work?? If you keep the name, you should keep the menu! now where am i going to enjoy a big plate of yummy spaghetti and my boyfriend can enjoy the meatball hero that Jason Sheehan from the Westword raved about (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.westword.com%2F2007-05-31%2Frestaurants%2Fgennaro-s-lounge%2F2&s=71106387d219e0d3d73e0dbeae032a3275dd9e1cd94e0ff5eaa4bfafee7a3d8b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.westword.com/…</a>)?? I miss the old menu!!!!
I will probably go there one more time to try the other pasta sauce they have and update you guys on it. Ill even make my boyfriend order a sausage or meatball hero too.
I miss the old menu.
Gennaros recently re-opened. Â The lovely little neighborhood Italian eatery / neighborhood bar had been closed for several months.
The old Gennaros had excellent Italian food highlighted by wonderful sausage, loaded garlic bread and famous garlic knots - all fresh and delicious. Â They also served very authentic NYC style pizza and heaping plates full of fresh pasta. Â
The new Gennaros has virtually no menu. Â The lunch menu I was handed offered precisely six items. Â Of those I chose the 2 pizza slice entree. Â The pizza was very, very good and I enjoyed it. Â I was bummed, though, that I did not have more choices and that my favorites were gone, gone, gone from the menu. Â They even took out the PBR tap which was kind of a calling card for the old Gennaros. Â The new regime installed microbrew taps, instead. Â I enjoy good beer as much as anyone but I always associated the flavor of PBR with this particular place.
I'll be back again (and again) and I am hopeful that the menu grows and improves.
Came here for the Grand Re-Opening and to throw down some karaoke (Thursdays). Â I love the retro feel and for a dive, this place was clean including the bathroom. Â The bartender at the bar was very nice, but really slow. Â I'm not sure if he's new at bartending or things were just so disorganized that he had a hard time being efficient. Â Either way, it was annoying. Â I ended up switching my tab over to the waitress.
The sound system for karaoke was very good as well as the massive selection of songs offered. Â The crowd was friendly and for the most part, courteous. Â Even the bartender participated. Â I'm not sure if it was just for the grand opening, but they had some really good specials going on: Â $2.00 pints and $2.00 slabs of pizza. Â
Overall, I had a fun time and will definitely be coming back on Thursdays.
Great Italian food, from antipasto salad, garlic knots, to the eggplant rollitini!! Â Laid back atmosphere and plenty of HDTVs to watch your favorite sporting events... plus pinball, silver strike and a jukebox.... and on weekends live music.
Plus the bartenders are super fun and friendly!!
This is a pretty wacky place. Â It's a bar and restaurant. Â The restaurant and bar are connected by one narrow doorway but they couldn't be more different. Â The restaurant is pretty traditional with old black-and-white photos everywhere, while the bar has checkerboard floors, red vinyl everywhere, diner-style vinyl bar stools. Â So while the decor is retro, it looks like it's either been remodeled to be look that way or it's been really well-maintained.
The food is good, nothing too unique. Â It's you're typical family Italian place. Â I had an eggplant grinder which I liked and the anti-pasta salad was good, but it had a little too much iceberg lettuce. Â
Good music and sound system in the bar. Â And they have Big buck hunter PRO!
