Where else can you go to get $1 PBR's? Â We actually stopped by here while waiting for a table next door since their bar area was crowded. Â Other drink specials on that fine Tuesday night included:
$2 Domestic Bottles
$3 Margaritas
$5.50 Hurricanes
They also had food specials - $5.99 Tacos and $8.99 Philly Steak Sandwich
The place was kinda empty, but kinda full. Â The bar area was full of patrons watching the hockey game on the TV's. Â The dining area was more empty with a few people having a dinner. Â There's a projector in the dining area that was showing the Blackhawks game on the wall. Â The waitress was friendly and fast with our drink orders. Â Not a bad place to hand out and certainly a good place to wait for a table.
I might be a little bias on my review but I just love this place. I travel far to come hangout at this place b/c the staff are awesome (once they get to know you). The food is the typical bar food but I am a little bum that they took away my favorite dipping sauce for my chicken fingers. Â The drinks are your standard drinks. It's a great place to hangout with friends and family. You have to go on Tuesday or Friday nights and meet the awesome bartender (Christa)...she's the BEST!
Review Source:I preface this by saying this was my first visit in 7 years and I have NEVER gone here at night for the nightlife so I can't comment on the crowd or whatnot. I've only been here for carryout or lunch. Again, this was the first time I've stepped foot in here in 7 years.
And it looks the same. A good old-town feeling neighborhood bar. I like that Gruben's hasn't changed much over the years, it adds to its charm.
Our waitress was not too bright, but friendly.
The menu has a lot of nice options, reminds me of some places I use to go to in Joliet.
I tried the Spicy Jalapeno Burger which wasn't very spicy, but flavorful. I was bummed that my meat patty did not taste hot and the pepperjack cheese was not melted. ??? It was a cold slice of cheese. I was with a party of 6 and most of them had burgers and their cheese was melted and hot, so apparently I got the bad burger.
The homemade chips are good.
Overall I liked it, but remember it being slightly better. Perhaps my tastes have changed. I'd like to give it another try someday, in another 7 years and hope for my cheese to be melted.
Do give it a try for lunch if you are in the area.
Be warned though, it does have an "everybody knows your name" small town vibe just like it did when Plainfield was actually small! Some people may love this, some won't.

The food is a step above bar food.  They make a great steak sandwich that was way better before they took goat cheese off the menu.  The have a good selection of apps and  a lot of sandwiches to choose from.  The service is great though I've never seen it crowded.
Sausage fest central. Whoa. There was like a 2:1 guy/girl ratio, and that might even be pushing it. I kind of liked this place, on a Friday night, it never got too crowded, like every single place in downtown Naperville. That was pretty refreshing. They had a jukebox that you could put your money into and almost immediately hear your song (a buck a song, however). And the most joyously fantabulous part is that they had $3 Captain drinks on a Friday night. So me and my friend got nice and ripped for under thirty bucks. You can't do that in downtown Naperville!
