Always stellar sushi at Hapa. Every location is good but this one is my favorite since it's closest to home. Interesting names on some of the rolls, but they are all amazing. Price-wise, well it's sushi so expect to drop some cash. I didn't take part in the 5280 menu but it looked decent for the price. Come for the sushi, that's what they are known for.
Review Source:I absolutely LOVE Hapa!
My friends and I tend to come here on the weekend. Â So of course during happy hour it's a little packed, but totally worth it. Â The food is delicious! Â The wait staff will check on you before happy hour ends to grab those last orders.
My recommendations are for starters: the miso soup, monkey brains, pork gyoza, and magic mushrooms. Then for sushi rolls: orgasm roll, multi organism roll, and California roll. Â You can't forget to have sake bombs too!! Â :-) Â
Happy Hours are as follows...
Early Bird: Mon-Sun 2:30-5:30 (2 for $7 select sushi rolls, 1/2 off all starters, $2 a piece nigiri [fri & sat], $3.50 sake cocktails, $3 hot sake, $3 fruit infused sake, $2.50 hapa beer)
Night Owl: Fri & Sat 10-midnight (2 for $7 select sushi rolls, 1/2 off all starters, $3.50 sake cocktails, $3 hot sake, $3 fruit infused sake, $2.50 hapa beer)
This place sucks. The sushi did not taste fresh and really had little taste. I ordered seaweed salad, and that was terrible. I was there for a business lunch and nobody liked the seaweed salad. I've never been to a sushi restaurant that can mess up a basic seaweed salad. Service was fine. Atmosphere was fine. But food was really bad. I'm surprised they have so many reviews on Yelp.
Review Source:We've been to a Hapa countless times but went for the last time last night. Â
First things first, neither the food nor the service has ever been great, average on a good night although shortly after it opened, it seemed a little better than that. Â It's gone straight down hill since with every experience coming up shorter than the last. Â I'll admit it, I've continued to go for the hype and to give it one last chance....every time. Â It seems as though cost cutting strategies have just cut into the important things and now the entire experience suffers.
The food: Â the food comes in at just OK. Â Once upon a time I may have called it above average. Â The food, both in it's preparation and quality has just slid into the "not good" category. Â The quality of the fish has fallen off and either the existing chefs didn't learn how to make rice properly (which is no easy task, sushi rice takes years to master) or a significant change to the recipe has been made. Â In either case, along with the quality of the food, it seems as though they've just cut costs to the point that the food suffers. Â Further, the pours came in shy of a true 5.5-6 oz pours on their premium wines by the glass. Â I don't mean to sound cheap but it's just one more thing that makes the restaurant come off as cheap. Â for $14/ glass of Sonoma Cutrer, I'd expect a 6 oz pour, not the 4.5 oz I received.
The service:  again, similar trend here.  We no longer recognize any of the wait staff - high turnover never tells a good story.  Few of the wait staff appears over the age of 21 or 22 which leads me to conclude that none are professional waiters.  Last night, one actually slammed a bottle of wine into my sisters elbow as he ran by our table with the bottle held below his waist instead of on a tray (if you've ever waited tables in a real restaurant, you know this is a no no).  The impact of the bottle on her elbow actually put her in tears which most of the tables around us noticed.  In the interest of full disclosure, she did have a prior injury on said elbow, regardless, the apologies seemed a little half a$$ed.  The manager asked for her information but while I expected  the standard in restaurant apology - some sort of comped item, maybe her desert or meal (while i'm not sure I would have accepted it, frankly for a customer to be put in tears during a visit to a restaurant and not have the entire meal comped was a bit of a surprise), we didn't even get a 10% off coupon for next time.  I don't mean to sound petty, but the manager just seemed more concerned with the incident report and a possible law suit/ insurance claim than whether the customer was ok.  It just seemed a little cold.
Hapa does have a great atmosphere even for the short cuts they've taken on the room which is a bit surprising, as i don't understand how one ignores the poor food and service here. Â Next time I crave sushi, it will be Sushi Sasa, Sushi Den, or even Sushi Train for that matter. Â If you're in the Landmark and are craving an Asian meal, try Jing just a few doors up.
I had promised my bestie to birthday sushi and she requested Hapa... so I reluctantly came in for the sake of making my best girl happy on her bday.
I was actually incredibly impressed with the sushi we ordered this time. It ended up tasting far better than anything I've had at Hapa before. I don't know if I came in on a really 'ON' night, but this was seriously a huge improvement from any of the many visits I have made to Hapa in the past. We got a ton of rolls but the most notable one was definitely the Mork & Mindy roll - salmon, white tuna, orange, and chive. Such a great, fresh combination of flavors, and, get this.... NOT slathered in creamy sauce!
Not only was the sushi great, our waitress Katie took stellar care of us. My water was always full, as was my green tea, and she was very quick and efficient.
I'm very glad to have had such a turnaround experience with Hapa, especially for the bestie's birthday!
My first experience at Hapa was in Cherry Creek where the waiter asked me for two forms of ID to order wine. The guy said it was a "policy for suspicious looking customers" after a theft they recently had. I don't know how wine, a previous theft and my suit would categorize me as suspicious, but I decided their policy was not for me and left. Two years later I decided, heck, let's give it another go and give the Hapa in Greenwood Village a try.
It couldn't be as bad, right? Two forms of ID--maybe the waiter was new. Maybe he thought I was 20. Maybe it was a compliment and just thought I had stolen the looks of a superstar, and wanted two forms of ID to confirm I am as good looking on paper as I am in person. So let's do this thing Hapa! You get a second chance to make a first impression! Plus, Fake Optimus Prime is your mascot! I love Optimus Prime! Let's rock this thing out!
Second chance at a first impression: the hostess tried to sit my fiance and me down at a table that STILL HAD USED, DIRTY PLATES on it. On a busy football Sunday afternoon with only about five other customers in the restaurant, so there were about 43,000 other tables available to sit us at. Maybe she can only walk in straight lines.
After demanding we sit elsewhere, the rest of our visit continued on the kinda sorta terrible end. The waiter was not attentive. The food came out after about 40 minutes. The rolls were not prepared well nor did they taste well. After the bill came and I handed the waiter my credit card, it took about 15 (!) minutes to get the card back. When a different waiter finally came back with the card and receipt, instead of handing it to me (my arm was stretched out toward him), he placed it down on the table next to us and said "good bye".
I think they teach you at Waiter University to hand the card back to the guy it belongs to, not at the empty table next to him to avoid any kind of human contact.
This whole experience alone would have earned Hapa two stars. I do my best not to give one star reviews unless an establishment truly deserves it, and will not waste my time giving a long, monotonous review about a one-star establishment. But the dreaded one star was earned when, an hour later, my fiance and I both had bad stomach aches and began vomiting (not simultaneously; that would take a skilled failure of bad food to make both our bodies react in sync). We went to the doctor yesterday and discovered we had food poisoning. Food poisoning! What the eff! What did we have to eat all day? We only had smoothies and some salad all day and oohhh that's right! We also had Hapa! And it tasted weird but we went ahead and ate it anyway because we usually enjoy sushi! Â
Needless to say, Hapa is not a happy place. Optimus Prime would be very disappointed.
I've gotten to be kind of a sushi snob over the years, and for me Hapa is just okay. They have some really excellent rolls, but most of them aren't mind blowing. And the ones that are really good, are also really pricey. It's in the area of my office, so I've eaten there quite a few times, but it's not somewhere that I go out of my way for.
The service is usually pretty good, and the atmosphere is kind of trendy and fun. They have slings to sit your baby seat on (and high chairs too) if you choose to take your infant out to have sushi with you like I do.
Our overall service was really disconcerting. Â Think our server was either stoned, untrained or just not very bright bless his heart. Â Order so messed up...perhaps the worst server experience ever, hands down. Â He just seemed so confused from his late start to even acknowledge we were there all the way through last course...just totally out of it. Â Still unsure what was going on with him. Â His total incompetence ruined anything good we might have found about restaurant.
Review Source:I prefer this Hapa over the Cherry Creek and downtown locations just because the area is new and landmark theaters is right around the corner.
I would go for 5 stars because i really enjoy their rolls but their sushi chef made a blatant error and gave us the wrong roll. When I tried explaining to our server, she couldn't make sense of it and we just dismissed it. Still a good place for sushi albeit pricey
This past Saturday night, I decided to take my boyfriend for a date. Â He absolutely LOVES sushi and is always down to try new places. Â I decided to forgo our usual sushi restaurant in favor of Hapa.
The ambiance is great especially compared to our usual lime green Japanese pop music restaurant (don't judge, the sushi is great and pretty reasonably priced). Â However we were seated next to loud arrogant jackass who wouldn't shut up about his opinions on everything under the sun. Â I'm fully aware Hapa isn't responsible for this, but we were there early and there were a lot of tables, why did we get sat right next to these people??
We did make it in time for Happy Hour, which had some really great prices so we could actually try some different things. Â The Monkey Brains were delicious, but the Edamame was poorly seasoned and really bland. Â The drinks were nothing to write home about....good, but overpriced considering I can make it home for a quarter the price.
As for the rolls, the multiple orgasm is delicious.!! Cannot recommend enough!! Â The boyfriend had the surf and turf roll and for $22 we both found it kind of blah. Â The service was decent, but we kind of felt forgotten about. Â Anyway, I'd go again if I was looking for a place to take someone who enjoys ambiance, but I think the bf and I will stick to lime green walls and Japanese pop music!
If you have any food allergies, Hapa is the place to go! Not only do they serve delicious sushi, they also provide an entire gluten free menu, and are very patient and accommodating. Much care and attention is paid to food sensitivities. My mother is celiac and she was so very impressed with their knowledge of the matter, the quality of their gluten free selections, and their outstanding customer service!
Review Source:This place was recommended to me for the Happy Hour, which I heard I couldn't miss. Â And, I will recommend it to you, for the same reason.
I am sure that the regular menu has many amazing things on it, but I find that this place is a little too expensive for my taste. Â Honestly, the prices remind me of South Beach prices, except this place isn't on South Beach.
BUT, I do not hold this against them. Â The Happy Hour menu is cheap. Â Cheap cheap cheap. Â And, on this happy hour menu is an item that I now cannot live without...
Magic Mushrooms.
Oh, yes, ladies and gents, this appetizer is now on my "Death Row Last Meal List". Â Magic Mushrooms are salmon cooked around chunks of avocado and then topped with some sort of flavored, cooked mayonnaise. Â And, my description really isn't doing it justice. Â They are little buttons of molten lava goodness. Â I want these every single day. Â EVERY DAY.
My only real complaint about the happy hour is that 90% of the rolls offered on the happy hour menu contain no actual fish. Â They're, like, "pickled gourd" roll. Â And, who gets hungry thinking about "pickled gourd" roll? Â However, the few fish rolls on the HH menu have been fresh and tasty, so I can't complain too much.
I'll definitely be back, so long as they have the Magic Mushrooms, which I am including a picture of.
Great place to hang out at happy hour. Have been a few times now and they're very consistent. Service is overall very attentive and helpful. We haven't seen it be too crowded or noisy so it's really worth going if you want to enjoy good quality sushi. The appetizers are really great too, and so is the Hapa beer - full flavor, rich color. The spicy tuna nachos are killer and the vegetable tempura too. Can't beat the prices either. Purple Haze all in my brain!!
Review Source:Decent enough spot for sushi. Came in for lunch on a Friday and had a couple of rolls at the bar. The caterpillar roll was pretty good but the rainbow roll was just decent. Still, you get some good value from the selections and there is plenty of seating at the tables and at the bar. Solid spot for lunch
Review Source:Happened across Hapa with some friends one day during happy hour. The have a great selection of 2 for 1 roll, and sushi bombs. The service though I wouldn't say is the best. Every time I have gone the waiters take your order, and bring your check. That is pretty much the only interaction I had with anyone. Its never packed or anything when I've gone. But the waiters are just nowhere to be found. Other than that the food is amazing, the decor rocks, and its not to expensive.
Review Source:Customer service was exceptional the second we walked in the door! We were greeted and seated immediately. Our server was funny, embracing, knowledgeable and attentive! The sushi rolls were perfect! Edamame, chicken skewers were delicious. Â Everything was awesome... definitely going to be our favorite spot!
Review Source:Decent Happy Hour prices on sushi rolls and drinks.
The service in the back bar was wonderful!
Not a big happy hour menu, but the sushi is decent quality for the price- and the rolls have some fun names.
There was a TV in the back bar that had some football on, so that is always a plus!
We will be back!
Trendy, hipster regional sushi chain. Multiple locations in the Denver/Boulder Metro area.
Don't get me wrong, the sushi is good, awesome even, but the atmosphere is a little pretentious. Walk in wearing biker gear, as I did on this occasion, and you will get some stink-eye. Stick with water and you will get some muttering from your server as they walk away.
All that being said, the happy hour prices on rolls are nothing to joke about. Half price on about a dozen of the least expensive rolls, including an excellent take on a California Roll.
2 half price happy hour rolls plus 3 regular price rolls = $30
A girlfriend and I decided to try the happy hour here this weekend, after discussing my previous lunch experiences. Happily, this most recent visit was the best service I have ever received at this location.
As always, the food was delicious, that's never the problem. We sampled the vegetable tempura, the calimari and several sushi rolls and cocktails. We sat at the sushi bar and our sushi chef was wonderful, attentive and ensured that our food came out quickly, and while still hot. The calimari was absolutely phenomenal, by far the best I've ever had. Our server was friendly and attentive, I didn't have the problem of an empty water glass this time.
Overall, we enjoyed this happy hour experience so much that I might just take my lunch hour later so I can get in on the specials.
Just ate here for lunch and I was very happy with both the food and service!
Service:
Kimberly, our waitress, was excellent at customer service. She made sure our glasses were never empty even while she was training a new employee in the middle of a very busy lunch.
Style:
The interior of the restaurant was very stylish and well put together. The open sushi bar to the back of the dining room was also very pleasant to see. They also have a nice little patio area outside which is positioned away from the street.
Food:
Really good sushi! Not the absolute best I've had but it's better than most places I've been to plus the fish tasted very fresh. I really enjoyed how they're menu is set up for an array of different sushi goers. In my opinion, their "Hapa Originals" are much better than their "Beginner Sushi," but having a variety of sushi styles presented in a Beginner-Advanced format was really nice to see. There's also a variety in prices as well, so you don't have to automatically expect a large bill.
Recommendations:
-Hawaiian Calamari ($8.50); Absolutely delicious!
-Dragon Roll ($13)
Reading the reviews it appears that folks have had issues with service. Went for the first time Sunday evening and while not packed, Â we were far from being the only diners. I've not been on a Friday or Saturday, but been nearby and really suggest reservations - the place appears packed those nights.
Our service was good and the rolls we had were all very good. Â Amazing how fresh considering our distance from the ocean. The names of the rolls are a little silly (really, are you trying to shock me with a sushi roll name multiple orgasm?) but again, everything we ate was really very good. Â We'll be back.
Not the best sushi place in Denver but it's close to home and had great sushi. Â Service was excellent. Â Went for lunch on a Monday so it wasn't too busy. Â Had the Mark and Mindy roll (I think that's what it's called) and the Rainbow roll. Â Also had some salmon and tuna Nigiri. Â ALL were excellent.
It has a very nice upscale vibe/feel to the place but you can definitely wear shorts and flip flops (at least during the week and day it wasn't out of place at all).
I love hapa - and even though they opened a branch in suberbea - they did it up right!
The place is huge, edgy, same sorta feel as cherry creek, and the staff is super nice!
Bar is way in the back - par for the course, cute seating areas, able to order sushi back there if you so choose!
And the happy hour - let's chat about that shall we! Sign me up - makes me strive to be a blue hair that eats at 4pm! The options are fabulous - veggie roll, tuna poke, colorado style himache, panko crusted tuna, etc etc! You wont be getting the hapa roll or the multiple orgasm at a discount - but with the savings, go for it!
The location is big enough that you can sit and enjoy the company you are with, without any guilt at keeping the server from getting another set of tips!
I don't work in the DTC anymore - but it is a nice mid point to meet up with my friends and peeps from down south! I'll be back!
I met my husband here for lunch last week and damn, it was great, fresh, delicious sushi! I am very impressed.
I must admit, one of the better sushi joints, thats for sure. I ordered five different rolls and each one was absolutely delicious.
Now I just to schedule more lunch dates... this place was amaze-balls!
yummo!!
A-OK is just about right....
stopped in for dinner with an old friend. we oredered a few rolls, and a bit o'sake....
the rolls were fresh and delicious... really no complaints...
for sushi in the suburbs of denver, this place was a-ok.
would go back when i am in town again for sure...
Alright, I almost considered dropping a star because they were closed for a "Staff Appreciation Day" on Superbowl Sunday.
BUT . . . the Multiple Orgasm roll that I had today (as well as the Tootsie Roll) was amazing, certainly a food orgasm in the best sense. Delicious and fresh, I would definitely return to try some of the other rolls and various sushi options.
Service wasn't outstanding but wasn't disappointing, either. The server didn't mind that we took up her table for a couple hours (post-lunch rush, so we weren't costing her additional tips.)
Yes . . . I think I will return to enjoy more Multiple Orgasms. Frequently.
'Nuff Said!
Hapa is a fun place to go because they have a lot of creative food beyond traditional sushi. The biggest draw to us at Hapa is the taro poke, which is available in either tuna or salmon. It's one of the few places to get poke in Denver, and both the tuna and salmon are good choices. Unfortunately, it does seem like the portions have gotten smaller recently.
Hapa's tempura is also pretty good, and is something we're more likely to order here than at Sushi Den. Again, though, the last time we came to Hapa, it seemed like the tempura combo plate had gotten smaller.
In the roll and nigiri department, my personal favorite is the XXX roll. The Hapa roll (spicy tuna) is good, but isn't really distinguishable from spicy tuna anywhere else.
Nigiri tends to be a little thinner than Sushi Den (of course), and the amaebi at Sushi Den is clearly a cut above. However, it's still a good place to have fresh (and inventive) sushi, so we'll keep coming back.
Happy Hour was great, fantastic food at affordable prices. Â They have 3 for $7.00 sushi specials and $3.50 cocktails. Â The pear infused sake with gin cocktail was refreshingly outstanding, as well as the redbull with infused raspberry vodka, yet a little on the sweet side. Â The happy hour rolls are a little on the boring side, but they are a good price. Â I recommend the pork sliders, they were tasty and juicy.
Yet don't forget how fast these can add up, even for happy hour! Â Two happy hour drinks @3.50 each times two people plus 3 sushi rolls, two appetizers, and a bottle of hot sake = $50! Â This will tab might influence me going somewhere else for happy hour next time, although the food and drinks were very good
My Wedding, My Graduation, My Birthday, My 50th Wedding anniversary, etc. Â Any event, anytime, I am down to be taken to Hapa Sushi. Special occasions= your romantic partner paying, which is a plus because Hapa can get a little pricey when ordering the good stuff.
Yes, there are cheap fairly simple rolls such as the Cali roll, Salmon Avocado, Spicy Tuna and more! Â There are also delicious rolls such as the Orgasm, Ultimate Orgasm, #9 roll, Four Play roll, etc. Â These range from $8- $15 but are, like the title, incredibly orgasmic. Â Let's not forget the seasoned edamame. Â This version of the soy bean pod is covered in chili oil and soy sauce with special seasonings. Â YUM. The green mussels are also mighty tasty, and the sauce baked on top is similar if not the same as, the sauce used on top of the Orgasm roll.
If you haven't tried the desert here, I would definitely save a little room for it! Â That is the what makes Hapa the winning sushi place for me! Â There is nothing better than their warm banana bread, served with fresh sliced bananas, strawberries, over a chilled caramel sauce. Â
By golly, I think I just died and went to heaven thinking about it! Â Besides the food, this place has a fun and funky atmosphere, a great staff, great customer service, and the food comes out fairly speedy! Â If you live in Denver and haven't been here, you haven't really lived.
Great date place as their rolls have....interesting names that Freud would approve of. Â If nothing else you can break the ice by saying to your date "Would you like the 69 or Multiple Orgasm.....roll I mean."
Service is always great at this location. Â The hostess greeted us, the water waiter greeted us and our waiter was working so well he had sweat on his brow. Â
Sushi is good quality not to mention creative. Â I'd rather come here than another certain "Den" that I think is over-rated.
This place is at a great location, has a great atmosphere, and has good food! We tried a few things on the menu here: Taro Poke, Colorado Style Hamachi, Negihama Maki, Orgasm Roll, and XXX Roll. This isn't my first time here (second), but I remember my first time here being more pleasant than the second.
The first thing that arrived nonchalantly to my table was the Colorado style Hamachi. I have had this dish before here and many times else where. even home made. To my disappointment, the Hamachi (Yellow Tail) was a lot rougher in the mouth than expected. Usually it just melts in your mouth, along with the strength of the ponzu sauce complimenting the Hamachi, ending with a  taste of cilantro herb and a powerful spicy kick of the Jalapeno. In my opinion the jalapeno is the main part of the dish, but my experience was completely the opposite. The Hamachi was a little on the harder and rough side and the jalapeno was not spicy at all.
The rolls came out next and my favorite ones were the beginner roll, Negihama Maki, and the Hapa Sushi's  Orgasm Roll. The Negihama Maki is the most simplistic and "healthiest" feeling of the rolls. It is again made with yellowtail and some scallions. I always enjoy this dish because it has such a fresh and simple taste to it, and in the end you don't feel guilty but you feel satisfied after having the taste of raw fish, greens onions, and rice dipped into some soy sauce mixed with wasabi.
Orgasm Roll has a great "special sauce" that is use to top off their California roll wrapped in Salmon and broiled afterwards. This is definitely opposite from the Negihama roll, in terms of the freshness, but it does have the powerful and fulfilling taste to a more "advanced" roll and leaves you feeling satisfied after each bite. This one is my favorite roll of the place, and recommend anyone who loves the dynamite appetizer to try this roll out.
The last roll that I bring up is the XXX roll. If you like olive oil, this is probably a good roll for you. As you can see, I think I have a preference for yellow tail. It is an avocado and tempura asparagus roll wrapped with Negihama, served in ponzu and  topped off with jalapenos and olive oil. This roll did not hit a positive taste bud in my body. Once I bit into it, my first reaction was, "wow did they fry the tempura asparagus in some old oil?" I guess I only like to cook with olive oil because the olive oil was way too over powering for me, to a point where I couldn't enjoy the other components of the dish. The jalapenos also felt like they were just garnishes on the roll.
Lastly, the Taro poke came out. This plate was also a no go for me. The Hawaiian style tuna on seared taro cake with sour cream and cucumbers were an odd combination for me. Although I love creativity and was ecstatic to try it out, the tastes I can remember were very bland. The yuzu sour cream seemed pointless for me and the tuna seemed tasteless for me.
I gave it a three star because all the new things I tried weren't  hitters for me. The original dishes I had were good enough that I would actually still come back and eat here again and try new things because they have a great selection on their menu!
