Some food I've had was disgusting, some absolutely delicious. Over priced. I like to go on Wednesdays for half price burgers. The nachos with chicken were awful. Make you pay 1.50 to have fries or tots instead of chips on the side. Dumb. Some days I have had great service, other days (most days) AWFUL service. Being there 2-3 hours just because the waiter is so slow. Ridiculous!

Go for the atmosphere, not for the food.

The food & service is terrible.  Their servers are horrendously bad.  I have had a bad experience at a table every single time I have been there.

So why the 4 stars? I love this bar.  It's a great local place (I'm from Timonium) to have a low-key social night with friends.  Trivia is fun, and weekends are fun.  I have noticed that the crowd is starting to look more trashy on the weekends, but as long as you come in a group it's not anything to get P.Oed about.

I have never been too impressed with HIghtopps' food, but this past week surprised me.  Needed to stop in for a quick dinner.  Service was fast, which we needed.   I had the grilled buffalo chicken salad - nice & spicy and huge!  Husband had a cheese steak - which was huge as well. Might return sooner than later, for once.

If you want a laid back bar, with good music and cheap drinks - this is the place to be on the weekends!  The speciality drink menu, features mixed drinks (Saturdays - Grapefuit Crush) in a large pitcher for only $9 and will knock you on your butt. Be nice to the bartenders and they'll treat you well.

Nice place to head after a long day at the Timonium Fairgrounds, as its right next door.

A nice change of pace from the Towson bars. Outdoor seating is good. Charm City Trivia on Tuesday/Wednesday nights (in 2012 at least). The food is mediocre. They screwed up a turkey club the last time I went. Mixed age-groups... Early 20-something's and 40-somethings.

I really want to like this place, and I have been here and had experiences that aren't terrible. But really, the place is always way too crowded. Plus, I understand the law and everything, but I get carded at the door, at the bar (either one) and then sometimes again by the waitress if sitting at a table. I mean, if I'm already past the bouncer and halfway through my drink, leave me alone.

This is also a place to go for shots or beer, but the mixed drinks are crap. I mean that in the nicest way possible. Sometimes, a drink that is basically vodka with food coloring is good (and cheaper than buying, say, 6 shots separately), so depending on your goal for the evening, that could be a good thing. You will find an eclectic mix of younger college kids, and old men on any given night. Oh, and pretty much forget about going here in the summer. yes, it's the "busy" season, but it gets TOO crowded. Like... park in the "overflow" walk all the way to the entrance and change your mind because people are literally squished together all the way to the door. How do you even get to the bar?

This seems to be one of the few bars to go to when back in the 21093.  I came here on a Friday night with some friends just to see what it was like, and I have to say it had the most random people in it.  The place is almost two floors, a little stairway separates the bar area from the more restaurant like area.  The lower level was filled with kids college age or mid 20s, then it just jumps a generation and the bar level had people 40s 50s and probably beyond.
Service was sluggish and the sandwich I ordered was not that great.  Drinks are decently priced and Id like to go back in the warmer months to sit on the patio area.  Being next to the fairgrounds, this place must drum up a lot of people and especially big nights to watch sports.

Otherwise, not good food, slow service, eh.

It's hard to review Hightopps because it's more like 3 or 4 places all in one. The restaurant is definitely 1-star. The services is laughably bad and the food isn't good enough to make up for it. The inside bar is OK. It's pretty loud and uncomfortable.

It's the outside bars that make Hightopps great. The back room with the fireplace is a great place to unwind after work. It can be a little loud, especially if there's live music but the couches by the fireplace are so comfy, it makes up for a lot.

The "beach" is the place to go when the weather is good. It's the best place to celebrate summer with a drink.

As my brother, a Hightopps regular, says "Its Seacrets in Timonium." Only Marylanders will understand. If you're craving Ocean City's the outdoor seating, the non-stop Jimmy Buffet, the fruity frozen cocktails, and the Old Bay/Crab inspired bar food, Hightopps is your spot.

I went last Monday for a late lunch on the Patio. Our waitress was pleasant and attentive and the patio seating was aplenty. I was expected to be underwhelmed by the food, but the Old Bay wings are better here than at Batemans! The rest of our ordering followed the theme, "add crab to everything." The Maryland crab soup needed a little of that Old Bay wing spice and fewer tomatoes, but it was still flavorful and the bacon was a nice touch. The side salad is fresh and generously portioned. The Hightopps Crab pizza was surprisingly tasty, but don't expect more toppings than just crab and cheese. My brother swears by the Buffalo Chicken Wrap, claiming that it is the 6th time in a row he has ordered it.

I've been to Hightopps in the past for both happy hour and later evening activities. Shout out to DJ Budda! While it definitely gets crowded with barely legal lax bros and other Baltimore county prepsters in the evenings, it avoids any jersey shore-esque club scene and keeps it hometown. If you're in the area, stop in for some Old Bay wings, trivia, and good time. Hightopps reminds me why I miss Baltimore.

Holy broseph Batman! This place seems to be the usual weekend watering hole for a whole myriad of characters with a good amount of typical giant bar filler. I don't think I've ever been to a bar this crowded where the drinks were crap, the service was junk, and the ambiance was......well kinda like Joe's Crab shack but with possibly more VD. Aside from some skeez making out with a fat girl on one of the couches in the rear, there were plenty of sloppy drunk bros macking on ladies shamelessly. Plus, the cops seem to patrol the parking lot like sharks at a hemophiliac pool party and I'm sure every weekend a whole new docket is typed up, all the names being Hightopps frequenters.

The only saving grace that I found was that they have Raging  Bitch on tap. The rail drinks are junk. They are pretty much Italian ice splashed with a bit of liquor and some soda and they don't get you drunk fast enough to tolerate this place, though I fear the blood alcohol level I'd have to obtain would be near fatal to do that.

I am being a bit unfair. I haven't been here when it's not super busy and I haven't had the food. But I can safely say if you like neighborhood bars, if you hate the club atmosphere, and if you like a little more space and a little less Ed Hardy, maybe try for somewhere else. But if you love hair gel, bicep curls (and hate squats. be a man, do squats), polo shirts with visor caps....go here and please don't go anywhere else.

I met up with some coworkers for happy hour here once. I was surprised how BIG this place is - it keeps going and going! The patio was pretty and the live music was pretty cool. The best part is the playground for kids while the parents socialize. Pretty neat set up.

There is limited seating around the kid area, which can be challenging should you decide to bring your child. My daughter had sand thrown in her eyes by some unwatched kids. After she recovered, she found her way to a stranger's table and started munching on their appetizers. I guess the playground made her assume it was community food. It was pretty embarrassing, but they were nice about it.

I tried going here to eat food with my family once. It was terrible. We sampled their "famous" wings, a salad and chicken tenders. All of it was pretty gross.

I highly recommend this place for drinks and socializing, but not for food. And if you bring a kid, watch the kid :-)

Busy! busy! busy! Hightopps is one of those places that isn't busy because the food and drinks are good, but because it is just a hangout spot.

The menu is run-of-the-mill bar food. My friend and I ordered crab dip. The dish was huge with plenty of bread. It was alright, but I wouldn't order it again.

The drinks are loaded with ice and are served in plastic cups. The bartenders throw the drinks together fast and the drinks aren't mixed too well. $5 for a cup of rail drink ice is a little much for me. It is probably best to stick to beer at this place.

The place is large and there is music. I live in the area, so it is an okay place to spend an evening if I'm not up to trekking into Baltimore.

The food here is good, sloppy, and filling.

    The beer is, well, beer.

We ended up getting a pitcher of beer, and a couple burgers. Both burgers were all over the place, but what we could manage to fit in our mouths was good.

Will probably come back here again eventually. I didn't have any issues with the place, it just wasn't very memorable.

Every single time I'm here this place is packed. I came last night with my friend around 10:30pm, and it was packed. On a Tuesday. Thankfully the weather was mild so we sat outside. We both got crab dip and a chicken quesadilla to split, as well as beer.

First off, they don't have Natty Boh here. Fine, whatever, we all can't serve the best beer on the face of the Earth I suppose. For $6 I got a Yuengling and a Blue Moon for my friend. Not bad.

The crab dip was good. The cheese kind of made me gag, but otherwise it wasn't bad.

The chicken quesadilla was really darn good. It had to be the most well thought out quesadilla I've ever eaten. The chicken was tender and juicy, and the veggies inside were fresh. For 10:30 at night this was a rare treat. It's worth the $12 you'll spend on it.

I enjoy this place a great deal, even though the parking lot is small. I'll be back here, for sure.

The comedy night on Sundays is great. Get there a little bit before 9 to get great seating and a good meal. The food is typical bar-Americana-fair so don't expect too much, but overall, it had flavor and was well prepared.

I would like to address the review below dated 6/13/11 - I am the "improbable" (check my license) T. Brad Hudson and I run the comedy show at Hightopps.  The clearly disgruntled and immature gentleman below was at the show on 6/12/11  - He was asked to leave (thrown out) for heckling amateur comedians.  As you can read by his post and the fake name he is hiding behind on the internet (Jesus H.)  Mr. Jesus finds himself superior to everyone else.  I'm the one that had him tossed, so I can assume this is the big man's way of getting his revenge.  While I am the first to admit that some weeks, the show can be every bit of a "train wreck" - much like the American Idol auditions shows - some of it is actually hilarious if you HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR.  BUT what Jesus failed to mention is that my show is an OPEN MIC.  I give anyone that wants to try standup a chance to do so.  And I reward the crowd EVERY Sunday - good show or bad - with an outstanding national/regional headliner.   He was booted before the headliner took the stage.  What Captain Cheap Date also forgot to mention is that while he probably demanded his price of admission back, the show is ABSOLUTELY FREE.  I just wanted to clarify all that.  I love cowards that hide behind internet reviews written with all the intellectual capacity of a 7th grader.  I'm T. BRAD HUDSON and my show has been voted "Best Free Comedy Show in Baltimore" for four years in a row. I stand behind my comics and my show.  Come see us any time.

I can't say I like parking across the street, but hey, on a Thursday night, this place is hopping. They have a newly remodeled front bar, with lots of skylights and televisions.  Much better than the deeper, darker recesses you'd normally have to sit in.  Nachos were great, cheap, and service was good.  Best thing I can say is:

    Blueberry Bomb!

I had a good time here despite only having one beer. Didn't try any of the food but it did look good. I like them for cheap entertainment basically with all the tvs to watch the game and a free comedy show that i would have gladly paid for when it had me laughing so hard. I hope to go back to try the other stuff but i had to give them props for leaving me in stiches.

I will be going somewhere else for game day next time.

I've grown out of places like Hightopps. It's your typical oversized bar that doles out slightly below average bar food and cheap drinks. Needless to say, that's probably why I would have liked it 15 years ago and probably why I don't like it now.

There's always a strange odor when you walk in the back doors; a combination of basement must and sewer gas, that really makes you wonder. What the hell's going on down there. I've only ever been there for lunch during the week, so there's hardly been more than a handful of people around. Service is prompt and friendly enough,

The last food experience I had was the grilled chicken club ($10). It was just OK. There were three of us in the party and it took about 30 minutes for our food to arrive (sandwiches and house chips). Not sure what that was all about, considering there were only 3 other people in the place and two of them were employees.

Anyway, they proceded to bring our food out covered with metal lids - like we were expecting some kind of great reveal. So what happened to the chips? They all got a steam job and by the time we got them they were sogged out. Maybe it's not a good idea to use covers on hot food when house chips are the side. On second thought, maybe the prep should be timed better so that you don't need covers at all. To their credit, they did replace the floppy chips with a bowl of crunchy ones, cold, but crunchy.

I've been here twice, both times because a friend of mine insisted. I doubt I'll ever find myself back at Hightopps again. It's definitely the kind of place you'll find packed with 20-somethings on the weekend and I'm sure there are huge crowds on game day, but now that I'm old enough to know better, it's just not my bag.

Hightopps is definitely busy place and a hot spot for the early-twenties college crowd.  It's a very fun place that offers everything from live acoustic bands, to comedy shows, to a DJ and dance floor.  And the outdoor patio is GREAT!  Just be careful if you try to come here on spring/summer weekend night because it will be so ridiculously packed that you won't be able to move, will have to wait forever for the bathroom, and will fight to get the bartender's attention!  But if you're looking to meet people and have a fun night out, this place is worth checking out.  And I met my boyfriend here, so Hightopps will always have a special place in my heart!

Good for happy hour specials and drinks. The food is ok...basically bar food that I find the quality uneven. Pizza could be huge and bubbly and the next time it is more like a crispy flatbread. Great outdoor space for drinks and food on the deck. The place is packed on a summer afternoon/evening and packed on Tuesday/Wednesday nights when they host Charm City Trivia.

A great place to meet up with old friends while hanging out by the bar on the outside patio. With everything from a kids' play area outside to chug-offs during Tuesday trivia nights, Hightopps is appropriate for all ages. Parking is a bit difficult, but the atmosphere and drink specials make it well worthwhile!

I'm looking for a sports bar and didn't expect much for a Tuesday evening.  I arrived there and greeted me was a bouncer checking IDs while the patio looked full.  I was surprised expecting a somewhat chill bar scene for a Tuesday in Maryland.  I went inside (not the patio) and encountered a crowd of folks.  The first thing I noticed was the age of people.  These are all college kids (a very good ratio if you're a guy).  I happened to stumble upon a bar stool with room to spare while asked for a menu.  Surprisingly I discovered the kitchen was open until 1AM and previously concerned I wasn't going to eat.  I ordered a crab cake sandwich on a kaiser roll that you certainly couldn't get from where I'm from.  It came at a reasonable time and what can I say...it hit the spot from someone out of town.  It tasted fresh and lots of flavor, with lump crab meat with lettuce, tomato and cocktail sauce - I would certainly rate it high.   Beyond the food, I definitely felt  little old but it was certainly better than sitting at an old geezer bar and listening to elevator music.  If you're young and in your 20's this is definitely the place to hang on a Tuesday night (at least).

I can't comment on the food, but as far as night life goes, this is the place to be in the Cockeysville / Hunt Valley area. It does get crowded at times but the atmosphere is really chill and there are a ton of hot chicks (sorry just being honest). The beers are always ice cold and the mix drinks are strong, the crowd and spirits always make for a fun time.

The outdoor deck it great, especially in the spring and summer time. They have a nice indoor section with pool tables and big screens. My only complaint would be the fact that they only have 1 bathroom, its one of the few bars that I have been to where guys end up waiting in line with the girls.

Since many of my friends live in the area, I've been hearing about Hightopps a lot the last few months, especially about their "great happy hours," obviously spurring my excitement to try this place out. I finally had a chance to stop by for a late-lunch/early happy hour visit today, and to be honest I wasn't too impressed. The drinks specials that I'd heard so much about turned out to be  draft beer for $1 from 4-7pm (can't argue that this is a great deal, but there's no better way to make a happy hour happier than by discounting some of the over-priced liquor drinks).

Other than my disappointment in the specials (which I guess isn't a concern for all), the place itself was pretty great. We got there around 3 so it wasn't too crowded yet, but as we were leaving around 5 it was already getting packed, but in a way that made me think that it would soon be great fun for a Friday afternoon. I ordered one of their specialties-- the Shoemaker salad, which was great-- and the rest of the people I was with were very happy with their food. The service was quick and friendly, constantly asking if there was anything else we needed.

It's right along York Road, but when you're sitting there on the back patio you really could sip on your beer and pretend that you're at a bayside restaurant down in Ocean City-- a place most of the customers would probably rather be. I'm not sure that this place would be nearly as fun in the winter months, but with it's multiple decks, it's definitely worth checking out at least once or twice during the summer months- just don't get your hopes up about cheap, fruity drinks the way I did!

Hightopps is like a little bit of tropical paradise... off York Road in Timonium, next to the fairgrounds, nowhere near anything actually tropical.

A few of us came after work and it was INSANELY crowded.  I was the only one who actually managed to get a spot in Hightopps actual parking lot, everyone else had to park in one of the office parking lots across the street.  We had a few drinks in the rocking chair/picnic table section while waiting for our table.  Luckily this was a pretty decent area as it took over an hour for us to get an actual table and get food.

The food was pretty good and our waitress was nice (once we flagged her down) but it was pretty slow.  There's plenty of stuff on the menu... seafood, sandwiches, pizza, etc etc.

There seemed to be a good mix of people from college kids to a decently older crowd.  The playground there is odd, I don't know why parents would want to bring their children to a large, crowded outside bar full of drunk people, but you know, whatever works for you I guess...

Everytime I pass this place on the weekend, it's even more insanely crowded so I don't think I'll be back then, but we'll probably be back for happy hour during the week sometime.

Hightopps squanders so much of it's potential. The deck, location, music, and mediocre competition should make Hightopps a layup. Service and food are consistently awful. The last straw was the mistake of  taking advice to bring our young boys because of the child's play area. The creepy solo guys quaffing beers surveying the playground area meant we couldn't leave fast enough!

Hightopps is conveniently located next to Timonium Fairgrounds and has a spacious and well lit parking lot. As you walk towards the building, you might find yourself looking for the entrance. With multiple doorways, it's easy to get confused. Don't stress though: any entrance will do the trick. Once inside, the lack of a hostess table may add another level of confusion. There are three main dining rooms: A bar surrounded by a couple of booths, counter seating overlooking a recreation area with a couple of pool tables, and a second bar area with a couple of high tops and couches surrounding a fireplace.

The food is typical American bar food. Didn't see any real surprises on the menu. They boast about their 13 flavors of buffalo-style wings which go for $.50 each on Sunday nights. On this particular Sunday, I tried the Old Bay, Hot, and Honey Mustard wings. The wings were meaty and well seasoned. Blue cheese, celery, and carrot sticks come with the wings. The hot wings were not very spicy and lacked crispiness. The old bay wings were a little over cooked and dry. The honey mustard wings were tangy, sweet, and well cooked. However, some of them had too much sauce while some had too little. A little more care in the kitchen would have been appreciated. I appreciated the fact that these wings were not battered however the double fry method would have been preferred.

The service was fairly good except for a couple of blatant errors. Servers should not spill drinks. But when they do spill drinks accidentally, they should apologize. Drinks were spilled not once, but twice. The last time, it was spilled into my food... I was also billed erroneously for the wrong tab. That error was promptly fixed but nonetheless, I'm not sure how that even happened especially since there was such a big difference in the bills...

Hightopps is a typical American bar. Nothing extraordinary that I would write home about but it is the kind of reliable place you could look forward to eating at after a long day at work. The outdoor seating area is also a plus for those warm Baltimore summer nights.

Hightopps is a great place to hang out. My whole family frequents this place throughout the year, but Summer is great fun because of the outdoor/tiki bar sort of setting! The outdoor seating is great. We enjoy it best as a place to have a couple beers together and my sons can play pool. We typically eat appetizers and they have a good menu. The chef here is getting better all the time.

My friend had her wedding after-party at Hightopps.  Because of the Army-Navy game, we were staying in Timonium, so Hightopps was a convenient location.  She had reserved a side room for the wedding guests - the room was relatively small and just off the entrance to the bar.  The bar itself was pretty large with tons of TVs around for people to catch up on the sports scores from college football Saturday.

The drinks were pretty inexpensive - a vodka soda was $3.75 (I almost flinched); sadly, the Diet Coke as $2.25!  You definitely know what's the better value!  They'd arranged for bar food to be available and we had hummus and pita chips, mozzarella sticks and some sort of egg roll type of item.  The hummus was a bit garlicky for my palette but the mozzarella sticks hit the spot.
