Please stop the madness and misleading. Â The steak sandwiches ain't that hot. Â NOT AT ALL. Â I was less than impressed with the food, to say the least! Â I expected the wait due to the other reviews, and the wait was the biggest b.s. due to the crowded, drama filled ambiance.
The biggest slap in the face, next to the rude service, was my expectations of the food were so high from the 4-5 star reviews and even their reputation off of Yelp! Â But this was for the birds.
My Granny always told me "good means different things to different people!"
this place sucks. i don't care how good the food may be. the staff is rude espically some lady name ke-ke. the service is extremely slow and the lobby area is too small. the owner should be a million aire and he needs to expand and hire more people. it's sad that black folks accept any type of service. Â i walked out after waiting close to a hour. i'll never go back even if the lobby area is empty.
Review Source:I went to Home of the Hoagie over Taurus because Taurus fell off. Â I've been to Home of the Hoagie before but not a lot because it's not near me. Â The first time I went, one of the cashiers was rude to my dad. Â It's not what you say, it's how you say it! Â The wait is a little long ,why, I don't know. Â We get our food and it was great! The other day we go back, this time I called in. Â The lady said pick up in 20 minutes. Â I get there and it's not ready. Â It took another 10 minutes to make 2 hoagies. Â We go home and my dad is not pleased with his food. Â I called the restaurant back and told the cashier what the problem was. Â She apologized and said she would make another and refund the money for my dad's hoagie. Â My hoagie was great! Â I'm glad she took care of the problem and understood that gas is $4 a gallon so coming out there twice had pissed me off. Â The food is not Home of the Hoagie's problem. Â Time management and attitude is. BTW, the older lady took care of me. Â The younger ones need customer service classes. Â I would have given them 5 stars.
Review Source:I crave the sandwiches, but detest the wait. I called in 45 min prior before and still had to wait 45min when I got there. It doesn't matter if you call ahead your still going to have to wait.
Put it this way. I eat there maybe once or twice a year. I'm not the only one who feels if they were faster , would visit waayyy more often. I'm craving right now. It'll probably be 2013 before I go back. Saadddd
The food is good but not THAT good!
My husband is a fan of this place but they can count me out!!! We live north so whenever we venture south we like to get foods we normally can't get on the Northside.
1st visit, we ordered our food and waited 30 min. (not great but not bad...he warned me of the wait)
2nd visit, we ordered our food and waited 45 min. (I'm very patient but this time I was a little annoyed because of the other patrons complaints while I waited in such a cramped space)
3rd & final visit for me...I Â called our order in at 12:04, the employee on the phone pleasantly took my order & advised me 20 min. From the prior visits I figured I would take my time to give them the time they needed to prepare our food while also avoiding the cramped complaint area. I arrived from the Northside at 12:40 only to find my order had not been entered! I was told "just a few minutes" while watching the young lady hand my order to the kitchen staff. The "few minutes" = 45 min. at 1:25 my order was finally ready or so I thought...It was incorrect which tacked on an additional 10 min. to correct.
I know most people rated 5 stars based on the taste but almost 2 hours wait for steak sandwiches and hoagies is beyond ridiculous no matter how good the food is!!!
I find it odd that people get sooooooo wiped out over waiting for something they like... what an impatient society we have become. I don' t see how this location is rude... they take your order, you wait till they call your name, and you pick-up your food and go. Where I noticed rude was the amount of people standing in this itty-bitty shop complaining LOUDLY about the wait. Not to mention the amount of people who walk up to the already crowded order line DEMANDING to know when there order will be ready.
SO WHAT it takes a while if it's worth the wait!!!! Some small businesses are afraid to relocate or expand, because quite frankly, 'if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.' They have a HUGE amount of people ordering and some had multiple orders. From what I could see, the kitchen area had as many people as could possibly fit back there to make and take orders without cutting, killing or burning one another. So if you come here, relax.. it may take a little longer than you would like.
That all being said... this is probably the best sandwich on the face of the planet. A GLORIOUS BLEND of seasoned meat with onions, peppers and the most deliciously sweet sauce you could ask for on a soft warm Italian bun with melted cheese!!! This sandwich makes my eyes roll to the back of my head with a symphony of mmmmmm sounds with just one bite. I could seriously eat this every day for the rest of my life!!! I personally prefer the sandwich with no sauce and the fries drowned in sauce.
GREAT food, POOR service. The poor service is the only reason this restaurant did not get a 5 star rating from me. The hoagy's here are perfect from the meat to the softness of the bread. Their famous steak sandwich with cheese is must have with a side of fries with steak sauce. I wish that I could compare it to something but it has it's own distinct delicious taste.
Now the bad... Their service sucks! There is no reason you should have to wait more than 10 minutes for a sandwich and some fries. To speed up the wait you can call in ahead of time, however, be warned they may have an attitude over the phone. This place especially on hoagy day (Tuesday) is known for having 20-30 minute waits to fulfill your order so dealing with that phone attitude may just knock off 10 minutes of your wait.
Long story short if you can get over the crappy service (as I do) this place is a must visit if your on the south side and craving a delicious sandwich.
The Chicago culinary scene is a deep, complex one that often is only talked about in terms of the restaurant experience downtown or on the north side. Â There is an entire other side of native Chicago food on the south and west sides of the city. Â Predominately black and poor, these areas offer a different type of Chicago culinary take that is just as good tasting as its counterparts in other parts of town. Â
One such institution is the famous Home of the Hoagy. Â This small, unassuming take out only restaurant touts some of the city's best French fries and mild sauce, along with its famous "Meal on a bun." Â This steak hoagy is chopped steak, onions, and green peppers drenched in a sweet and tangy mild sauce with your choice of sweet, hot, or both peppers and cheese. Â It is the type of sandwich that brings back childhood memories of long hot summer days and endless nights. Â It is perfection on a bun, a mouthwatering dance of flavors, textures, and temperatures. There are ham, turkey, and mixed cold cuts for hoagies as well. Â They all are served with super thinly sliced onions in a vinaigrette, lettuce, tomato, and cheese on a hoagy style bun. Â
But what stands out to me, what makes me crave for this restaurant are its fries with sauce. Â Chicago is a town known for mild sauce; everyone has their own version of it. Â Home of the Hoagy just happens to do it best to me. Â Your fries are given in a regular paper fry bag, placed in a plastic bag with a fork. Â What is so wonderful about these fries is that they are so crispy, that the sauce, which is doused on heavily doesn't make them soggy. Â I do not know how they manage that, but they do. Â I have eaten cold fries that have been sitting for a while in sauce, and still the French fry has maintained its integrity. Â The mild sauce itself is sweet, vinegary, spicy, and just wonderful with a thick sticky consistency. Â
While Hot Doug's may have fries fried in duck fat, he does not have fries with sauce, let's venture out of what is the normal Chicago food scene locations, and see the rest of the city. Â Home of the Hoagy is located at 1312 W. 111th Street. Â The lines are long, the service is questionable, but the food is outstanding. Â All of the color adds to a different and exciting dining experience. Â Opened Monday- Saturday from 10amish until 11pmish, closed on Sunday. Â They have a number but calling ahead is not a guarantee of faster service 773.238.7171. Â Explore the other sides of the Chi.
The 5 stars is STRICTLY pertaining to the food. The environment and overall experience is awful, but the food makes you just grin and bear it. The steak sandwich is delish. I still haven't tried it with the sauce yet. The turkey hoagy is HEAVENLY! So flavorful and HUGE. $6 for a monster sandwich! Too bad they don't take credit cards.
Review Source:I didn't know this little hole in the wall with horrible service and painfully long waits was still in business. I got my introduction to steak sandwiches here when I was a kid. And believe me, the food tastes the same today as it did way back then.
Still incredibly delicious.
I know I will be craving another one of their steak hoagies soon. Mmmmm.
This is the crack rock of hoagies, they will have you coming back for more and more and more!
If you like spicy food, order a steak sandwich "mixed, sweet & hot". Once your done eating, you will feel like Pooky (Chris Rock) on New Jack City!
"It just keep calling me and calling me....."
I have a dance I do when my friends suggest going to Home of the Hoagy! I dont get to this place much but when I do I am doing my dance all the way there and all the way to the table until the last bite. I love the steak sandwich and fries. They put a sauce on it and its kinda sweet and tangy and its delicious. Service meh could be better but I when it comes to this place that doesn't even matter to me.
My suggestion go when they first open or early lunch because this place is always crowded.
I have never had the actual hoagy so I cant comment on them but a friend says she likes them over the steak sandwich.
If I could describe Home of the Hoagy in one word it would be consistent. I love this place because you know exactly what you're going to get without any surprises. I have been coming to this place for years and I can comfortably say with 99.9% certainty that the food is going to be excellent, the service is going to be mediocre and the wait is going to be long.
The 4 star review is definitely about the food and not the service. The turkey hoagy is by far the best Hoagy that I've tasted in this city. And the steak sweet is really good also. Because the food is so good and they have many loyal customers, be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes before you receive your order. Believe me, when you take a bite out of that hoagy, it would have been well worth the wait.
The food is ok.The service sucks. Most of the people that work there are rude. They don't open on time. The attitude there is we got something you want so wait and shut up.On top of that  they are VERY SLOW.I understand it takes time to make food. But if i order a regular sandwich and you got 20 of them stack up and i still have to wait 20 min.If my wife didn't crave that place from time to time i will never go there. They can KISS MY A__!!!
Review Source:I have a strong weakness for this place! I have been coming here since I was a kid.
I usuall get a steak sweet and fries with steak sauce when I go. A steak sweet is basically a chopped steak sandwich on hoagy bread with sweet peppers and the steak sauce is some sort of mild sauce! This is one of those things that make life worth living! Not a very big space so its usually crowded in this place so its best to call your order in and pick it up. The actual hoagys are great here also. If you have a sweet tooth they have ice cream as well.
My buddies from out of town that visit me always have to stop at this place. Eventhough I have moved close to the loop, they always say "We are not leaving until we go to home of the hoagy and get a steak sweet!"
This place is so damn good. I 've been coming here since I was kid and the food has not changed.
My favorites are the steak and turkey. I have tried to duplicate these sandwiches at home, I've failed miserably. All of their sandwiches are good though. I've never cared for their fries. And I don't care what anybody says this place is a southside staple and always worth the trek.
In my many, many, many years of coming to this place I can honestly say I 've NEVER had a bad experience.......I wonder why there aren't more reviews......
I have to preface that it takes a long time to get down here. Â Even if you live at the 95th stop, the 111 bus wanders around the area like a drunken Cubs fan before finally getting here.
The food had better be worth it.
Ehh..the hand-packed ice cream is just okay and really the sandwich is just meat, lettuce, tomatoes, american cheese & two hot peppers on a sub roll with some
damn
fine
sauce
I wonder what it is.
