Ok, so this was my first time eating an Indian meal. The moment I took my first bite, I thought I had died and went to heaven! Every item on my plate was packed with love, flavor, and freshness! The Chicken Makhana is to die for! The buffet gives you a nice variety, and if you've never had Indian food, I'd highly recommend this place! I went with my boyfriend for lunch and our bill was only $17.99!
Review Source:India Palace is far from authentic, but overall ordinary Indian Americanized-dishes that we all love. Their buffet is pretty good with 6 vegetarian options and 6 non-veg options. They have a salad and dessert bar. If you frequent regularly don't forget the frequent eater card that they stamp, fill the card and get a free lunch.
Food: 3/5
Location: 3/5
Service: 3/5
Really awesome Indian. Â This is very close to our house and on the way home from work, so we do take out here all the time. Â The take out service is good. Â Very authentic Indian. Â Some of their dishes are the best in the city. Â If you're on the NW/W side of Indy, this place is a definite one to try. Â Their lunch buffet is OK but we prefer to order off the menu for dinner.
Review Source:Pretty good, especially for vegetarians; most of the meat dishes are chicken and lamb. Spicing is medium-medium hot. Flavors are especially good. Drinks are somewhat limited; no de-chai, as an example.
I've eaten from the menu, but was also surprised today at the buffet, which was very good with lots of variety, and also quite flavorful. The downside: the basmati rice was hard, and might break a filling if they don't do something about changing it out. Too bad about that, because the rest of the food in the buffet was superlative today-- hot, flavorful, and just very, very good with good variety. Too bad it the rice was so uneven. They might do better with more desserts, but we were truly full before the desserts were even thought of. The buffet also comes with naan, and we chose garlic naan that's also heavily spiced with cilantro.
In all, nothing to apologize for save limited drink selection and occasionally hard buffet rice. Good for a large party, as well.
So I flip-flop between here and India Garden as my coveted "favorite" Indian restaurant but I think I can assuredly say India Palace has become the victor! Â Food is delicious and consistant, service is excellent and waiters are very personable. Â I've just absolutely never had a bad experience here.
Review Source:They have tasty food on the lunch buffet. Â The wait staff is attentive, especially if you left them a nice tip on your previous visit. This place has been around for a long time and the decor shows it. Â If you're in the neighborhood give it a try, but, don't go out your way to make this a destination.
Review Source:We really enjoyed this buffet. Â Like any buffet, you should go early when the food is fresh for the best meal. Â The food is a little spicier than some, but I really like that. Â The overall flavor was better than most. (more authentic) Â
I do agree with another that the servers are not attentive. Â I mean, not at all. Â We had to flag for water refills twice and one of those times he forgot. Â We also had to ask for our check and waited a bit. Â I really would have rated 3.5 stars because of the service. If you want to be waited on well, go to Amber Indian in Carmel, or Shalimar in Broad Ripple. Â See my reviews for both, they all have their pros and cons.
I am not even sure how many stars to give India Palace, but BOY I feel badly that I can't give them five! Â This had always been my #1 Indian Restaurant and top five fave of ALL types of restaurants for a long time, until now. Â I don't want to be too harsh docking them in stars though...
I had not been here in at least four years until last week. Â I was home for a very long overdue visit and went here with my dad. Â I like that it is relatively close to his home in Speedway and it was good, but just not quite what I/we remembered.
We arrived a little too early and spent a half an hour or so next door in the Indian market. Â Not too long after five o'clock last tuesday we went in for dinner. We were acknowledged right away and seated no problem. Â We had a pretty rude waiter though, I hate to say. Â He repeatedly asked if we would like something to drink when we already said that water was fine for the time being. Â It was hot out and I did order a beer later. Â He seemed to hover at times like that, but then disappear the rest of the time. Â The man that ran some of our things out to us was really friendly though I have to say.
The vegetable samosa was good, but seemed different to me. Â It tasted much hotter than I remember. Â I had always loved their samosas the best of any place I had been before. Â I would just chalk that up to being too used to bland food in recent years, but the dal my dad ordered was weird, too. Â It wasn't just lentils, but other large beans that looked like kidney beans, etc. Â And he thought he tasted raisins in it. Â It was good, but just not what we expected. Â I also didn't want to eat another samosa because I wasn't sure when the guy would come back around with the water. Â It used to be that you took like one sip and it was filled again. Â The punjabi bhaji was very good. Â I hadn't had that in years! Â I have to note that this is a great place for vegetarians and vegans.
The only other complaints I would have other than the waiter and the food seeming inconsistent were that the drink menu on the table was really dirty. Â The menu was a little unclean. Â And the fiberglass tabletop we had had seen better days. Â It looked as if a customer burned it with a candle. Â I could overlook those things, but as a whole it just wasn't quite the same experience we've had in the past. Â We didn't recognize anyone that was working. Â Once upon a time, we would be remembered even if we hadn't been in there for quite awhile.
I won't totally give up on India Palace. Â Maybe they were just having an off day. Â We did however end up eating at Shalimar a few days later and had a much better time, especially with service. Â I sure hope India Palace isn't going downhill. Â That would be a terrible shame.
BAD
How do I describe how utterly terrible our experience was....I'll be brief.
There are 2 things I expect out of a server for a buffet. Â Water. Bill. Â I'm incredibly easy.
We had to beg for both.  We also got plenty of  passive aggressive attitude.... I'm pretty sure our server wanted to fight me, but that would mean he would have to move.
Horrible.
My first experience with Indian food, and I have to say I'm a fan. I fell in love with the butter chicken. It was too bad that we were in a rush so we couldn't fully enjoy our meal, but the waitstaff seemed to be alright with us rushing them. We managed to get our food and then have to pack it up right away, but it was still delicious later!
Review Source:If you want to know what I look like when I'm in love then watch me when I'm having lunch at this place. Â It is hands down the BEST Indian place for literally miles and miles around and trust me I *do* know what I'm yapping about. Â I'm one of those uber picky, ultra finicky vegetarians that takes her own food on each and every road trip because finding places to eat when I'm not at home always proves to be a nightmare. Â Usually though if there's an Indian Buffet in the town that I travel to *booyah* I get to eat 'normal' food that day. Â So suffice it to say I've eaten at a LOT of Indian Buffets. Â NONE of them compare to this place. Â Their bar always has a *least* four vegetarian sauces in addition to the normal salad and dessert sections. Â Their servers are a 'team' in that they are constantly circling making sure everyone's plates are cleared and glasses refilled. Â I absolutely LOVE to come here with a hearty appetite and be treated like a princess. Â
It's quite easy to find near the Lafayette Square Mall on the West Side of Indy off of 38th St and you get sooooo very much delicious tastiness for your $8! Â I have been here for dinner and everything is equally as fresh and delicious but you really cannot beat that lunch buffet deal for getting your fill of a variety of dishes all at once. Â Today there was mushroom masala (to die for) in addition to I think five other sauces. Â They generally have two types of bread And two types of rice. Â I always have to take a nap when I leave this place because I send myself into a carb overload!
I've been coming here for years and the quality of their food and service has only improved. Â Check them out early and often!
Don't forget to get your buffet stamp because after 8 the ninth one is free! Â I've claimed this prize at least three times so far!
It's been too long since I've been here. Â Had the lunch buffet. Â I got there just after it opened, and all the food on the buffet was extremely fresh. Â Impeccable everything. Â The curries seemed a bit spicey, as in authentic and not toned down for the North American palate. Â Either that or I've turned into a spice wimp. Â (Hint: use rice to "dilute" a curry if it's too spicey.)
They have both vegetarian dishes and meat dishes. Â The vegetable fried rice is unlike the veg fried rice you get at Chinese restaurants. Â I thought the rice was elegant. Â It served as a good base to soak up the sauce of the curries. Â
The various chicken dishes are classics, chicken curry, chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken, and another roasted-type chicken which I think was labeled as BBQ Chicken. Â There was also a goat curry, but I didn't try it this time.
An interesting dish was "Chicken Manchoorian", which tasted great, and was an Indian take on a Chinese preparation. Â
The naan was perfect, and seemed made in house.
The fruit on the dessert table, white grapes, red grapes and cantelope, was very fresh. Â I loved the mango pudding. Â There was also gulab jamun, but I didn't try it.
There was a delicious item called vegetable samosa chaat, consisting of a fresh salsa, and veggie samosas. Â The construction of the samosas was unique, almost like a mini veggie-burger, which I thought was excellent.
Ambience and cleanliness (including the men's room) continues to be high-end. Â Ceramic plates, stainless steel utensils, quality paper napkins for lunch. Â
Servers are well-dressed in uniforms, and very professional.
Lunch price was $7.99 plus drink, plus tax, plus tip. Â Well worth it.
Lunch clientele includes South Asians, so I assume the food is authentic.
Overall, they continue to be a classy joint. Very worty of impressing the boss/wife/gf/inlaws.
If you are looking for a 100% vegetarian Indian restaurant, that would be "Passage to India" in the same building, but a few doors down, where you enter into the "Om India Plaza" grocery store.
India Palace has been in business a long time. Â No wonder, they are excellent. Â (They also run the catering hall next door.)
This is the place I first tried Indian food 7 years ago and it is where I compare all of my other Indian experiences. Â Their lunch buffet is huge including a desert buffet. Â They even have a Sunday night dinner buffet which is a great end to the weekend. Â I always get their Chicken Tikka Masala and the Saag Paneer which are staples for me but I also try some of their other dishes as well but always go back to CTM & SP. Â My mouth is watering just writing about this! Â Looks like Sunday night we are going back to the buffet! Â It's worth the 30 minute drive for us every time.
Review Source:India Palace is a fantastic lunch spot with a good buffet. I normally shy away from buffets, especially for lunch... I hate over eating and then having to go back to work, but in normal indian style, this food is full of flavor and is so good that two plates with a broad selection on each will fulfill your palette very well.
The staff are friendly and it is fast service with a smile.
While, I've not dined in at India Palace, Â I have scored copious amounts of take out. Â Twice.
Their Onion Bhaji's are great and huge! Â
Vegetable samosas are really tasty, too. Â Full of potatoes and peas, they are wrapped in a dough that is crispy on the outside. Â Add a little Tamarind Chutney to either for a fun taste explosion!
Chicken Makhani and Chicken Tikka Masala are both great dishes, but are very similar. Â So, if you are looking to order a variety, don't order both of these. Â
Punjabi Bhaji is basically onion fritters in the masala sauce, but it's so good. Â A tasty vegetarian option for sure.
We've also had varied types of curry and korma. Â All good! Â
Of course, you have to have naan and papads to have with your meal. Â I mean, you just have to!
Also, you know, the last time I went to pick up a take out order... one of the guys slipped me a $5 coupon.
I have never been for the buffet, only for weekend dinner. Our water glasses ended up completely empty 3 times, once for 5 minutes. Our appetizer, aloo tikki (potato cakes) came out almost instantly but we then waited over 30 minutes for our food: lamb vindaloo (lamb with potatoes in spicy sauce) and saag paneer (spicy creamed spinach with cubes of fresh cheese). The vindaloo and saag were great tasting though, as were the aloo tikki! Spice level was right on, lamb was tender. Our sad bread wasn't up to par though. We ordered the naan stuffed with cheese. I've had this at other places, and the cheese is soft. Our bread arrived lukewarm at best, and the texture of the cheese was like shreds of plastic. It was disappointing. I think the cheese in my saag wasn't super fresh either...it was harder and didn't absorb much of the flavor from the sauce, but the dish was still good.
The chutneys here are fantastic. The best comparison I can make is having Heinz ketchup for the first time when all you've had prior to that is the generic packets that say "fancy ketchup" and are generally only found in elementary school cafeterias.
India Palace chutney trio=Heinz ketchup.
Better texture, fresher taste, not watery or separated. The colors were real, from the spices and herbs, not from food coloring. It's worth getting an appetizer just so you have something besides pappadam to put the chutney on!
Price-wise, most of the vegetarian items are $10. Most of the chicken items are $12, lamb and seafood $12, and the big combos are up to $16.
We plan on trying the buffet in the future, and I'll update then. Are there and Indian places in Indy that don't have the same generic interior decorations?
I went to the wrong restaurant. I was hoping this was Passage to India, but ah well...Apparently it's a common mistake to make. :) Service was attentive with the water glasses never dipping below half full, but the food was merely 'meh.' Not enough flavour. The saag was mild, delicate, & creamy-pretty good, but the rest of the offerings just seemed like they needed to have the spice level cranked up. Not necessarily to up the spiciness, merely because everything was a bit dull & bland. Most  everything needed some brightness added to the dish. The naan was also chewy like it had been sitting for a while & we arrived at 11:30. What's with all the cream-based dishes? I've rarely added cream to an Indian dish,  but at least half the buffet featured cream-based dishes & half contained meat, leaving only 1 or 2 vegan options.
Review Source:There is a new saying in the land of elephants, Hinduism and where more people have cell phones than shoes: "But of course, Americans like buffets. But of course!"
I can't conceptualize how in the sh*t they make so many varying dishes that may lead to choice fatigue, yes; yet, the pantheon of palette-pleasing choices creates an opportunity for everyone to sizzle their own core tandoori (that's your stomach by the way in yelp-speak). And, how exactly they have every dish under the big red one, matters not. What matters is that I'm an American and I have options, dammit.
Now... I didn't get to slowly cruise the buffet like a good American should... but we rode those randy coattails of choice for a Sunday dinner takeout.
*Tandoori Chicken (I can't speak for the taste as I've hung up my meat boots). Appearance: rich & served with onions, peppers and lemon. 5 baseball sized pieces -- one on the bone.
*Vegetable Samosas served with mint chutney, and tomato chutney. (The spices involved and chickpea to potato ratio makes this triangle of joy more complex than other samosas).
*Chana Masala: an Indian staple that is a foundation of comparing restaurant to restaurant. This was medium spiced and super dense and was a perfect compliment to the extra spicy dish.
*That extra spicy dish: "Punjabi Bhaji
Vegetable fritters, shredded onions, and bell peppers cooked in tomato and butter sauce." Yes, super buttery -- however ordering it at the absolute spiciest level ("extra spicy") makes it very doable.
*Dal Makhani: "Lentils flavored with freshly ground spices and sautéed in cream." It's a bowl of mehhhhhhhhhhhh.
This is my first stop on the tour of Indian in Indianapolis (yeah, I know, it's taken a while), so I don't have anything to compare it to in this city. As I've had some serious Indian in San Francisco... it's just about par and par in Punjabi means "better than the rest of you!"
I will be back for the buffet.
Hot damn, I'm a happy man Alexander The (Not So) Great's campaign ended at the Beas River & allowed for the Hindu / Punjab / Indian culture to flourish. Their campaign... a successful thrust of flavor through the Americas and Indiana. Curry On!
Taking parents to Indy 500 means I will get to try most of the Indian buffets around the state!
This was our second buffet out of the 3 we had all weekend and can't say I was a fan, but it wasn't too bad. Compared to Indian food in Chicago, I'd give it a 2-star maybe, but compared to other Indian food experiences in Indiana, it probably earns 3 of them.
I love to go here for lunch. I've not traveled to India (yet) so I can't speak to the authenticity of the food. But I do see diners who appear to be of Indian descent, which is a positive sign. The lunch buffet is huge, and nearly everyone can find something they enjoy. My favorites are the chicken tikka masala, mushroom saag, and saag paneer. I've actually tried to create a few of their dishes at home, with varying levels of success. The waiters can be a bit slow on refilling drinks, but otherwise are generally friendly.
Review Source:Ok, I admit it - Indian is low on my ethnic food totem pole. Â Not completely at the bottom, that space is reserved for Ethiopian (too mushy for me - like eating a meal of different flavored baby food) but it's down there. Â
HOWEVER, there are certain Indian dishes that I really really enjoy and India Palace does them the best. Â In particular, the Chicken Tikka Masala is excellent, I think it has a really good balance of creamy and spicy. Â
I've only come at lunch time - coworkers love to go to the buffet.
This is the best indian buffet in town, hands down. Â I love the huge variety of things to choose from but usually I go for the same dish... the chicken tikki masala. Â I drive from the east side to the west side every time I want indian food. Â Other buffets don't even come close. Â
Great food, great service. Â
Ask for the frequent diner stamp card and after 10 visits/dinners, you get a freebie!
Good for vegans by design, don't miss this one.
The lunch buffet is so indulgent that it will make you cry. It is magnificent. Baby angels riding unicorns give you your plates and it feels like you're full of rainbows inside. Okay, not really, but it is that good.
Dinner is cheap, good, but not great.
India Palace rocks. Â They have a great lunch buffet which I like to frequent on the weekends. Â However, it's OK to go here at other times too! Â The tandoori chicken is amazing. Â And honestly, who doesn't like chowing on Naan?
Service is fairly good, with a slight, but consistent, tendency to slam glasses down on the table a little drastically. Â I've never had a complaint.
A nice place for anyone who likes Indian. Â Keep in mind, though, this place isn't very spicy, if that's the taste that you prefer.
I love Indian Buffets, and India Palace has never failed to deliver. Other Indian Buffets in town just can't compete. Tons of vegetarian options too. I pretty much love everything they have on the buffet except the desserts. I'm always too full anyway. The curries are always impressive as is the tikka masala. The veggie dishes are usually the ones I end up eating the most of. Â There is a wide variety and seemingly always something new to me. Â I recommend going hungry and trying a bit of everything. Definitely scoop up a bunch of the onion chutney. Its the best I've had. So good and nose-runningly spicy. Also, don't skip the vegetable pakoras. The crunchy fried fritters go perfectly with the rest of the "saucier" dishes. I've been here for dinner on a few occasions too, but enjoy going for lunch so i can take advantage of the large variety.
Review Source:I feel a little sorry giving this place two stars because it wasn't aggressively bad. It just wasn't good. The Sunday lunch buffet looked like it had been prepared the day before. The chaat, for example, was a bit gray looking and I almost didn't recognize the spicy pickles because they were limp and slightly off-color. All of the dishes were kind of crusty on the outside--like they had been sitting out awhile or the warmers were too hot. Either way, it made for an unappetizing presentation. The naan was so hard, it was almost like crackers. The tamarind sauce was watery. The numerous veggie dishes were edible, except the mushroom mutter, a dish I usually like, was just gross. The staff was attentive, but unfriendly. For those who like Indian desserts, they had a whole separate buffet for those. But, overall, this was a total waste of calories for me.
Review Source:OMG. Â This place was awesome. Â it was a $10.99/person buffet. Â YUM!!
I couldn't get enough of the veggie samosas and the spinach/mushroom dish. Â and to die for = the dessert. Â deep fried balls where you can taste the CONDENSED MILK upon consumption. Â yeah, this is not a vegan item. Â but it took me by shock when i ate it. Â yes, it was amazing. Â it's like crack! Â
plus their naan was yummy too. Â i coulda ate here all day... it was so good, it forced me to pull up a spinach/mushroom recipe dish online and make it when i got home. Â
YUMMY!!!
I used to love this place. A year ago it was my favorite and I would drive thirty minutes to and from the place just for carry out a couple times a month!
About five - six months ago this changed. The chicken Tikka Masala that I had come to love was barely edible. For $20 for my meal, you would think that the chicken would be good and tender. Instead it was fatty and grisly...
In fact the last three times I have gone back, hoping that the last time was a fluke, it was the same poor quality chicken.
Also the service is horrid here. That's always been the case but I could overlook it because of the food quality. When the quality also waned, I could overlook it no longer. The servers are rude (period).
India Palace is awesome! The lunch buffet (which is all I've ever had), is excellent with fresh food, a lot of options, and delicious desserts. There is a coupon available online, too, for $1 off lunch buffet which makes the price not too bad for the amount of food that you get. I've never had to wait for a table, they always keep your water glass full, and being a vegetarian, there are tons of options... even more vegetarian options than things with meat in them!
Review Source:I love, love, LOVE India Palace!!! It's by far the best Indian restaurant I've ever been too. I've gone there several times over the past several years for dine-in, carry-out, and the buffet. And whenever I go, there are always several Indian people also eating there. I think this is a sign that the food is authentic.
First of all, the lunch buffet is very impressive. Not only is everything delicious, the selection is HUGE - 2 or 3 times bigger than other Indian buffets I've been too. It includes some of their best dishes, in my opinion. Also of note, I find the buffet to be very mildly spicy, which is great for those of us who can't take too much spiciness. I like just being able to savor the flavors.
The menu also has a huge array of dishes. I almost always get my favorite - the lamb or vegetable korma, and I LOVE the mango milkshakes! I've also had both the vegetarian and non-vegetarian samplers, which are give you about 10 excellent dishes and are a great deal. I think prices overall are very reasonable.
The atmosphere is very elegant, comfortable and soothing. The waitstaff is friendly - actually, the service is almost too good. Someone will come by to fill your water glass - even if you've only taken a sip - every 2 minutes. It gets a bit invasive. But I'd rather have overly-attentive waiters than inattentive ones.
Overall, this restaurant is a gem!
This is the best Indian Buffet in town hands down in my opinion. Â Very clean, elegant atmosphere and professional wait staff for a buffet. Â The food is superb and served hot. Â The desserts are very good. Â I have been eating the lunch buffet here for years and have never had a bad experience. Â I have eaten dinner here once and it was good, but I highly recommend the lunch buffet.
Review Source:This is my favorite Indian restaurant in Indianapolis. Â I am very happy that they will prepare their dishes "extra, extra hot." Â Bland Indian food isn't worth eating. Â My favorite thing about this restaurant is the fact that they have a Sunday night dinner buffet. Â Yes, the food is mild for the American tongue, but is still delicious. Â My favorite dish is the chicken tikka masala--extra hot, of course.
One of the most positive aspects of this place is the staff. Â They are VERY friendly--and usually remember what I want (and how I like it) from the second I walk in the door.
OMG!!!! Â I would've never expected to see this place on the list or hear of this place ever again! Â
So it just happens one night, out of the blue my cousin wanted to eat Indian food and this place just happens to be across the street. Â I refused to go at first because having catched the whiff of Indian food was such a turn off for me. Â Took some convincing, but I gave in. Â
(Noted: Â This was my FIRST and only time I have ever tried Indian food. Â Not to be narrow minded nad what not, I'm sure some of you out there love their cusine. Â It's just after this experience, for me.... totally scarred me for life and I have never ate Indian cusine ever again).
Anyhow, walking through the door... the smell of heavy curry permeated the air and caused me the nauseous feeling of wanting to throw up.  The smell is sooooo unlike other asian curry, that I couldn't help but try to only breath through my nose.  So we ordered  beef curry, lamb curry, and chicken curry..... now, the flatbread they gave us as the housebread was pretty awesome.  So I figured the entrees come out and it owuld be decent..... only.... no utensils were given. Â
We had to dig our food with our bare hands. Â Encrusting our nails with this foul tasting curry, and may I note that my chicken was bleeding when I ripped it apart? Â So my cousin told me to try his beef curry, that he has yet to dig into.... using me as an experiment, I took one bite.. and I'm spewing it back into a napkin. Â
That was ENOUGH, as we paid our bill and left our barely touched entrees and ran out the door for some frsh air. Â Thus, I can tell you.... I haven't since tried Indian curry since. Â
Sorry to disappoint, but that was my experience.
India Palace is my favorite Indian food of all time. Â Their paneer masala is some of the best I've ever had. Â The nav ratan shashi korma is also quite tasty! Â Also, don't miss a perfect vegetable pakora with delightfully spicy onion chutney.
They have a really great lunch buffet with several good vegetarian choices. Â This is a great place to come and try Indian food for the first time. Â
During Dinner hours, there's a small basket of papadam on the table to start things off. Â These are always perfectly cooked without being greasy. Â Dinner is nice with very generous portions. Â We usually get one entree per person, and have lunch the next day as well.
