We used Iron Hill as a halfway stopping point on our way back from the beach and were not disappointed at all. Â The beer and service were excellent. Â They were very accommodating of our two small children and two small dogs (there's an outdoor seating area on Main Street -- no worries, no dogs running around inside!). Â The food was good too, although we'd probably try something different next time. Â We ordered the goat cheese and beet salads, as well as an egg roll sampler. Â They were good, not great. Â We'll definitely be back, though. Â Thanks to all the nice staff who treated us well and brought our dogs some ice water on a 95 degree day.
Review Source:This place is awesome.
Went to have a few beers and eat dinner. The beer is excellent. Recommend the sampler before you make your selection. The wheat beer was my favorite. Not a big fan of the raspberry. The turkey burger is the best I have ever had, you can't go wrong. I saw the waiter bring nachos out for another table. Next time I am getting them. Those were a huge portion.
This is a WINNER in Newark. Â Â We sat outside, a nice cool beautiful summer evening. Â
Our waitress was attentive, polite, nice. Â Â I had the Lettuce wrap and it was very good. Â Â The chicken was just slices of boneless breast teriyaki style but the dish came with sesame noodles and many veggies. Â My BF got the caesar salad with Steak and it was cooked to perfection. Â
The microbrews are great...so many choices that are sure to please all different palates and tastes !!
Omg everything was amazing! From our fabulous server to the great food. We had the sweet potato fries as an appetizer. They are a must. Especially with the vanilla bourbon sauce, yum!!! I got the crab cakes and they were very good. My hubby had the bacon burger and loved it. Our server was attentive, kind, and super helpful. We will be back.
Review Source:This was a pleasant surprise! Â I was meeting a local friend while traveling for business. Â When we were discussing meeting point, he asked "what kind of place would you like to go to?" Â My response was: Â "A pub with craft beer and better-than-average pub food." Â Very quickly it was decided on Iron Hill. Â My friend's guidance was completely spot-on. Â
I was here on a Wednesday evening, and street parking was not difficult to come by. Â Upon entering, I found a long bar with some seats available, as well as a labyrinth of rooms with tables for diners. Â The size of the restaurant was deceptive upon entering. Our group of three decided to sit at the bar. Â
After a long day of work meetings, a beer seemed quite a refreshing idea though I didn't want to go too high on the ABV. Â Luckily, there was a great selection of beers from the high test stuff to something more modest. Â I initially started with a raspberry wheat (I tend to be a sucker for fruit beers). Â I then tried the Vienna Red Lager. Â Both were quite tasty. Â I sampled the Porter, which was surprisingly good (I can be hit or miss in terms of porters). Â
When it came to the food, I was amazed at the diversity of the menu from the appetizer to entree sections. Â After spending a lot of time trying to figure out what to order, I decided upon the moules frites. Â The mussels were quite good, though the sauce was not as brothy as I expected. Â Fries are almost always good in my book, and the garlic mayo that came with them was a lovely accompaniment. Â
After a long day in business meetings, this was the perfect spot to show up in jeans, unwind with a delicious meal and tasty homemade beer.
i think iron hill is a fun, quality place. Â obviously i try to go when its not over run by college kids - but considering the location - i mean really what can you expect. i always find the servers to be informed and happy. Â and i feel like the atmosphere is very cool and interesting - despite being a little area chain.
i'm just docking two stars b/c they *really* need to up their vegan game. Â hummus and wraps- come on that's so 2005 - lets get w/ 2013 and and become a little more creative.
overall iron hill - i got your back!
I've never had a bad bite to eat here, the staff is super friendly, and the drinks are great. Their martini's are always really good (they never skimp out on the vodka!) but they are known for their beer. I've had the orange beer and I believe it was a raspberry beer. All very good even if I'm not the biggest beer fan. I usually get their hummus platter or goat cheese pizza which are both really good.
Try it out!
Stopped here for lunch with a friend. Being gluten intolerant, no beer for me (except for Redbridge? Blah) but friend ordered the fancy beers to take home -- swears by them.
The menu was overwhelming; we eventually wound up getting the sweet potato fries and two lunch specials: italian turkey burger and chicken wrap. The fries were soft all around -- would have been nice if they were crispy on the outside. Sauces were fine. Burger very salty but overall a tasty idea. Tried the chicken wrap the next day and it was just huge chunks of chicken with little flavor.
Overall, good to fill the belly but that's about it.
I eat here all the time, mainly because I like the beer and the atmosphere. Â The food is good, but not great. Â Stick with the burgers, nachos, and pizzas and you'll be happy. Â Try going gourmet and you won't be as happy. Â
As far as the beer goes, I particularly like Justin's stouts and Belgians. Â He does a good job with the maltier styles, too. Â They're all probably good in their own right, but I gravitate toward the sweeter and darker styles, so I can't really speak to the other beers.
I can also say that of the two Iron Hill locations I've visited, this is by far the better. Â So, next time you're in New-Ark, drop in and try a sample. Â I think you'll be glad you did.
This place is "the establishment", or "the man", as far as craft beer and fancy food fair goes. They've got a great set up going, and there's no reason to change it. Especially when they themselves have had such an influence on Delaware's craft breweries.
Situated across from Klondike Kate's on Main Street, it's the polar opposite in terms of clientele and atmosphere. While the college kids clamor to get in the front door at Kate's, their professors are fighting for seats at the Iron Hill Brewery.
The restaurant is quite classy, and while there is no dress code, you will feel almost obliged to dress up due to the upscale atmosphere that the restaurant presents. It's recommended to call ahead to avoid the evening rush, as the wait can get quite long at times.
Lunch and dinner are great times to go and enjoy a meal here. The specials aren't too impressive, but they do showcase what's new the staff has come up with. The menu is well balanced, offering excellent variety amongst its selections. Some of my personal favorites involve their chicken entrees. And you've have to be crazy to not try one of their gourmet pizzas at least once (seeing as they offer the only true gourmet pizza dining experience in Newark).
Their in house brewed beers are outstanding. If you've got a thing for porters, I'd have to say they've probably got the best brewed porter in the local area. I strongly recommend you pick up a growler of it to go. Their ale can be a bit strong but aside from that there is no reason to crave anything other than the in house beer when visiting.
The entrees do not disappoint, and they show a deep sense of food knowledge possessed by the the artists in the back, many of whom are long time Delaware locals. The waitstaff will gladly help you if you are uncertain of which platter to choose.
If you are looking for a night out with friends or a more intimate evening, Iron Hill Brewery will not disappoint. The check can get high, but the service and quality matches it to the penny.
Parents, I would recommend this venue for older children.
I had lunch with some colleagues here after finishing a presentation. Actually, I had been to this bar twice to have some beer. but it was the first time for me to have lunch here. But we waited for a long time and then one waitress realized that  our 8 people were even not served a grass of water. I love this bar for its good beer. But because of waiting too long, so I rate 4 star this time, even the Red Chile Shrimp I ordered was very delicious.
Review Source:I went here for dinner on a Saturday night and had no problem being seated. I got chicken, rice, and asparagus and everything was cooked perfectly. Personally, I wasn't a fan of their beers. Even the light beer was bitter, and the red lager tasted like a mouthful of potpourri. But hey, to each his own. I would definitely go back for the food, but i'm sticking to diet coke to drink.
Review Source:Solid lunch experience on a Saturday afternoon. Â Our server, Mike, was competent and friendly. Â I asked to try 2 beers on tap and he returned with a 3rd one based on my requests. Â It was Red Dawn and it was delicious. Â I wound up ordering that. Â
We had the crab quesadilla to start and the 3 of us ordered sandwiches; 2 burgers and a grilled chicken. Â All were great. Â Especially the sweet potato fries. Â
When I asked for a ramekin to go container for my coleslaw, Mike brought me a fresh coleslaw to go. Â Nice touch!
One of my favorite restaurants in town!
In college, this was the bar to be at on Wednesday nights (that was back in 2005, so I'm not sure if that's still specifically true). However, it's still a great brewery; tasty drafts and seasonal beers.
The food never disappoints! Lunch or dinner, always fantastic! The menu is diverse and has something for everyone - from sandwiches and gourmet pizzas to delicious fish, chicken, etc entrees. I recently tried the salmon salad sandwich and it was just perfect! They also have a gluten-free menu.
Whenever I'm in town, I make it a point to eat here.
Came here for lunch while stopping on main street. As you walk in you see the fermentation tanks for the beer. Which is pretty cool and set up the atmosphere.
The staff was super friendly and helpful, when i was undecided on which beer to get, the waitress offered to bring me a sample of each. When i decided both were good but too heavy for lunch(hearty porters) i picked an amber ale, which she offered to get me a sample of as well. Didnt take her up on it, but it was pretty nice of her.
As for the food i got the pulled pork sandwich. It was awesome, there wass a little to much viniger in the juice they brought out, but i still liked it alot.
All in all i would come here again for lunch or even dinner if i was in the area.
My favorite spot on the Christiana River. Arrived by boat the other day. Â My note to the MANAGEMENT, Â You have a great thing going, Â PLEASE INVEST SOME MONEY ON FANS ON YOUR DECK!!! Â My Dinner was DESTROYED by GNATS! Â Not everyone likes to sit inside. Â Service was excellent, Â Food was OK. Â Couldn't eat in peace because of the gnats. Â Why no FANS???
Review Source:Love Iron Hill! It is a very nice, clean, and classy yet still casual restaurant/bar. Went here for my birthday dinner with family and had a fabulous meal! I had the raspberry wheat beer (very good!), calamari, crabcake dinner, and blueberry/peach cobbler. Absolutely no complaints - had a delicious meal and excellent service!
Review Source:Iron Hill Brewery is a go-to location for good food and drink in Newark, DE area. Â We had a awesome waitress Sara aka Rocky, she provided great service from beginning to end. Â I ordered one of the many Iron Hill's signature dishes, I enjoyed the Turkey Burger with fresh guacamole, bacon, and pepper jack cheese. Â I usually don't order turkey burgers from restaurants, but with Sara's recommendation I ordered the turkey burger. Â I was impressed with how juicy the burger was. Â Also, I recommend the Thai Popcorn Chicken appetizer, and the beer i recommend is the Ironbound Ale.
Review Source:Fun atmosphere, was pretty excited about my Seafood Pot Pie menu selection. Â Once I got it, I ate about a third of it, my shrimp tasted wrong, and the whole meal kinda unraveled. Â Our appetizer was a crab tostada, which was enjoyable, but overall I had a "meh" experience that night, company excepted of course. Â The atmosphere is lively, their beer is pretty good, but even on that note, was disappointed with the Cask Pale they had, but enjoyed their porter. Â I'll geve them another shot next time I visit because I always hear great things about them.
Review Source:I've always heard good things, so I went with high expectations. Â Unfortunately they were out of the homemade root beer, frowny face. Â My husband and friend liked their microbrews and my glass of wine was fine, but I was so excited to try the root beer! Â I ordered the mesclun salad (tasty!) and the goat cheese pizza (filling) and was overall satisfied with the dining. Â I wish I could comment on the calamari, which we also ordered, but sadly it never made its way out of the kitchen.
This leads me to something I must address, the sweet but perhaps inexperienced server we worked with. Â I honestly don't remember his name, but he never brought our food, other people did. Â Not sure if the lack of calamaru can be attributed to him, but he was genuinely surprised when we told him it never came after he came to check on the quality of our entrees. Â I guess he was out of the loop. Â When the check came, the first one he brought was not ours. Â The second one he brought was ours, but incorrect. Â The third time was the charm, and we left a decent tip, but were disappointed nonetheless.
The menu is large and varied making it easy for anyone to find something to enjoy. Â There's appetizers, big plates, entree salads, and healthy options ranging from veggies to bar grub to more upscale seafood and pasta dishes.
On our most recent visit I had the ahi tuna entree off the healthy options section of the menu. Â The tuna was perfectly seasoned and cooked medium rare and placed on a bed of sauteed leeks, mushrooms, and white bean with a tomato vinegarette. Â It was really flavorful and a very nice portion. Â I also had the spinach salad off the nightly dinner special menu.
The full dinner menu stops around 10pm and they transition to a small plate/late night menu. Â Looking around everything else looked really great, especially the sweet potato fries which were served with several dipping sauces and were a huge portion. Â On the beer front, I've sampled a few of the Iron Hill brews and they are pretty good, I like the IPA most of what I've had. Â
Service was good and it was a nice night sitting out front on the patio. Â Really laid back and pretty well priced for the quality (both of us had entrees, split a salad, with one glass of wine and one beer for $58). Â I'll definitely be returning and look forward to sampling more of the menu.
Micro brewers are generally a good idea, and this place is no exception. Â Smack in the middle of this college town, you get a wide variety of clientel, which differentiates it from neighboring spots. Â
The beers are very good. Â Unlike other pubs, they also offer a wide variety of fresh seafood and the food is very well made. Â Delicious.
On long drives down to DC, its tempting to stop at a rest stop or chain restaurant. Don't. Instead, take a few extra miles to go into this great little college town and stop in at a place like Iron Hill. We've gone several times and each time come away wishing there were a place like this closer.
Standouts (besides the obvious beer) are cheesesteak eggrolls (mmmm), Jambalaya, and the salads. The sandwiches and wraps are also terrific.
Added bonus -- a GREAT kids menu that has more choices than most with some healthy options to boot.
GREAT GREAT beer and super tasty food!
We went here for an early lunch last weekend while visiting family.
As soon as we were seated, our server was right over with a big plate filled with a varietable plethora of brunch breads! Â What a nice touch and pleasant surprise from the usual bread basket at most places.
Their beers are outstanding!
Our favorites: Pig Iron Porter and all 3 of the three wheat beers that they had - maybe all seasonal? Â Not sure. Â There was a White Belgian - GREAT! a Raspberry Wheat - also great and then pretty standard but delicious Hefewiezen. Â There were about 5 or 6 others available as well which were also good but these four were standout's for me personally.
The food is great - huge menu. Â The prices were a little higher than I expected but definitely worth it since A. the food is really good and
B. the portions are huge! Â We all had leftovers for lunch the next day.
Service is excellent and the place is really nice - good ambience!
So good that we went back the next day!
Our next visit to Newark will absolutely include as many stops at Iron Hill as we can possibly fit in!
Due to a series of unfortunate events, I wasn't scheduled to see my long-distance man friend for three weeks straight. I was grumbly about it until a wise redhead suggested we pick a weekday to meet up somewhere in between our respective locations, so that's just what we did -- according to MapQuest, Wilmington/Newark was approximately 1 hr. 40 min. from the both of us.
What does one do when attempting to dine in an unfamiliar city? Consult Yelp, of course!
Caffe Gelato sounded cool, but suspiciously didn't have any menu prices on their website. Turns out entrees were ~$25 each. Oof.
Fortunately, Iron Hill was a short, chilly walk down the street. For a Wednesday, the place was bumpin' - we're talking the-hostess-handed-us-a-buzzer busy. The wait was minimal, though, and soon we were seated.
THE MENU:
I wanted to eat everything. Seriously -- the soups, salads, appetizers, pizzas, sandwiches, entrees and beers all sounded amazing. I didn't want to drink drink in case I needed to drive back to Maryland that night, so I went for iced tea (they had flavors like mango, peach, raspberry and passionfruit, ooh la la). Brian tried out their house-made root beer, which was tasty as hell.
Indecisive libra that I am, I ordered a mesclun salad, crab quesadilla and a plate of sweet potato fries. B ordered a teriyaki chicken entree from the Healthy Selections section of the menu (they also had gluten-free options, which is cool).
THE FOOD:
My salad came with granny smith apples, pistachios, dried cranberries, vermont cheddar, onions and an orange-vanilla vinaigrette. It was every bit as delicious as that sounds! The crab quesadilla was okay, but I've been spoiled by Nacho Mama's in Baltimore... if they had swapped the cheddar/monterey jack for gouda, I would have been in heaven. As it was, the amount of crab was decent.
The sweet potato fries get their own freaking paragraph. Really, I could write a sonnet. I was OMGing like a 13 year-old as soon as the plate arrived; the portion was huge, the fries were huge, and the dipping sauces -- *wow.*
I'll confess to not trying the habanero-lime, but the smoked paprika aioli tasted like the orange dip you get at peruvian chicken places (which I'm crazy about), and the bourbon-vanilla sauce made the sweet potato taste like a cinnamon bun. YUM. I had the leftovers for breakfast this morning -- 12 hours and two fridges later, and still YUM.
THE SERVICE:
Tyler was awesome. He was the kind of server who brings you a refill on your drink before you notice you're approaching the bottom of the glass. His section was completely full, but you wouldn't have been able to tell from his impeccable timing -- he checked back when he needed to, and let us talk when we needed to. Also, he was balancing plates like he worked at Clyde's! I don't usually tip crazy high, but the guy earned a solid 25% from me.
- 1 star because I wasn't wowed by the quesadilla and B didn't rave about his chicken, but I'd be totally willing to bump it up on my next visit. I miss you, sweet potato fries....
Hands down, this is one of the best places around and it has the best beer around!
In general, the food is great. Â It is always well-executed and usually creative. Â The specials are always interesting and delicious, and the regular menu is just a plain comfort. Â It's fine dining in beer-form.
The burgers are always prepared well, the pizzas have the right crust and the right toppings, the fish is always the best. Â Even if you go for meatloaf or pork chops you will be happy - they are also excellent.
Desserts are also very good. Â Try the Oatmeal cake - it is a dense moist cake with the bite of oatmeal - just great.
The beers are why I go. Â I have a club membership which gets me reward points and a 4-oz larger mug of beer. Â The hand-made beer choices usually change for the season - but the standards are what I usually get anyway. Â In addition, there is a cask-conditioned brew that requires a special hand pump. Â It is less carbonated and is like an English ale - my absolute favorite.
There is no reason why you would be disappointed with this Newark standard!
I always loved Iron Hill. I tried Iron Hill when I was visiting the campus while choosing between colleges; needless to say I ended up attending UDEL and eat many meals and spent many nights drinking at the Hill. I would always prefer Iron Hill over Kates which is more of a touristy establishment.
All the drinks are a deal, they used to offer and I believe they still do $1 shots which are good for a buck. The place is always clean, the staff is always friendly and the menu is filled with some really great items.
While traveling down to Baltimore last weekend I stopped in with my girlfriend to catch up with some friends. I honestly believe Iron Hill has gotten better, if that is possible.
They started us off with some "irish-soda" bread which was pretty darn good. I ordered a "Mexican" type burger (w/guac, cheese, onion) which was out of this world; one of the best burgers I have had in recent memory. Wasn't a tad burned and cooked to perfection. It came with coleslaw which was freaking amazing and the always good fries. My gf ordered the chicken-salad sandwich and was raving about it the whole weekend.
The menu is very upscale bar food and may cost more than any other place on campus but is surely worth it.
Very good food for brunch, lunch, or dinner, and a good selection of micro brew beers. Â Can be a little pricey for students, but one of the few places in town to get a solid dining experience.
As a bar, the house special shots are a joke and it can be very hard to get a drink. Â Unfortunately, with so many other bars closing, this is one of the few places to go if you're not interested in a house party.
The best wings ever! Â I went to the University of Delaware and have since lived in Nashville and Baltimore. Â I will ONLY eat wings at Iron Hill and have been known to make it a point to stop there for lunch or dinner on my way home from Philadelphia, New York, or any point North of Delaware.
The burger is also fantastic, as are the nachos. Â Everything here is really fresh. Â It may be bar food, but it is bar food done right and with high quality ingredients. Â The entrees are lacking in imagination and sometimes execution, so it's best to stick with the bar food.
As for the beer, I'm certainly not an expert, but I've never liked any of them. Â They are all too hoppy for my tastes. Â Give me a Yuengling any day! Â The sampler is fun though if you are with a group and feeling adventurous.
Service is usually good and the atmosphere is nice in a clubby sort of way. Â It doesn't have that icky college feel like Klondike Kate's or Deer Park Tavern.
Iron Hill was the best place on Wed. nights for a chill night out, and Saturdays before the Balloon.
They have the greatest chicken wings in the whole world and every time I go to Newark I have to have them... Â I'm also a huge fan of their raspberry wheat pints.... If you are ever bored do a sampler, they're awesome.
