I was disappointed by Iron Springs Pub & Brewery, not because it was bad, but because it just wasn't as good as I had expected from looking online.

The beer was ok. I am a hop lover and I tried their Pale Ale (that they give a portion of the sale to ALS, BRAVO! I forgot the name of it) , their IPA and their Double IPA. All of which were decent beers but lacked the complexity of flavor that I look for in a good IPA. (Stone brewing co., Russian River brewing co. etc.)

I ordered the Miguel's Famous Poc Chuc - Grilled citrus and tequila marinated boneless pork loin chops finished with roasted red onions, charred tomato salsa, guacamole, Mexican rice, black beans and corn tortillas. The Pork was pretty good, well cooked and flavorful but the rice and beans were bland and I skipped on the tortillas all together. My wife ordered the Grilled Vegetable Plate and was disappointed with most of it.

All in all, it was decent but there are better places to grab a bite and a brew.

I heart you Iron Springs Pub, you are my little home away from home!  I've been coming to ISP for years and it's casual and friendly environment serves as a community meeting place de jour.  Sundays are like a family reunion, but only after 5pm when all the city people and their $12,000 bikes evaporate from town.  It doesn't get more local than M-F from 4-6pm - a complete Cheers experience.  The food is standard but solid pub fare and I appreciate that they make their own in-house veggie burger.  The Prawn Salad is amazing and my meat eating friends LOVE the burger.  There is always a cool and interesting rotation of beers to choose from and the pub makes their own sodas.  Kid and dog friendly too.

Fairfax definitely has its fair share of decent places to grab draft beers, Iron Springs being one of them.

They offer a good variety of drafts + if you tell them what you like they can mix various drafts to get you close to what your heart desires. I forgot what my bartender blended but it resembled Stella.

    $5 Drafts...not too shabby

    Overall Thoughts

Another decent place for beer, not sure about food, tbd!

When there's the chance, outdoor seating is the way to go.  Enjoy your beer and pub food while people walk past on the sidewalk...  It seems as though most everyone has a dog in this city!  This might fall into the category of animal cruelty.... but this girl dyed her dog's fur bright pink to match her own hair color... poor dog... It's one thing to dress up your dog in clothes, but dying their fur... seriously?

Sampler of 6 different beers is only $8.  Good deal if you want an assortment of alcoholic intoxication.  Also had a homemade root beer float ($4.00) and garlic fries ($4.50).  I expected a little more from the float, but maybe it's just the "homemade" part that I thought would standout.  Just tasted like a regular A&W root beer with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  On the other hand, those garlic fries were delicious!!  A few fries were left on the plate when the server came by to pick up, but we let him know that we weren't finished yet.... yes they were that good...  The other food looked mouth-watering from the pulled pork sandwiches to the french dip.   Salad also available for the health-conscious.

Since the inside seating was dark and mostly empty, this review is only for the outdoor awesomeness.

Delicious bar style food, variety of beers on tap and the patio seating that accommodates bypassing hikers with canines... I liked this place altogether.
    Really yummy beers! :)

My boyfriend and i both live within walking distance to Iron Springs and in the late spring and summer months we make stopping here for dinner and drinks a habit. The service is friendly, the food is good and they've got, i understand, a good selection of beer.

Why 5 stars? It's the beer stupid! :-)

As a San Diegan, I know great craft beer, and Iron Springs is GREAT craft beer. I did not eat during my visit, so this review is only for the beer, service, and atmosphere, which were all stellar.

    Beers I tried:
    Milk Pail Cream Ale
    The stout was awesome
The smoked porter was good, but you have to have an affinity for smoked porter
They have a hoppy red that was out of this world
    Their amber was good too

Service was timely and they were well informed about their beers, sent me tasters when I couldn't decide, all around festive.

If you're in Fairfax, this place is a MUST. If you love craft beer and are in the vicinity, go out of your way to stop by.

I have been to Iron Springs twice now, both times after a hike.  What can I say, it is a popular destination for a variety of reasons.

Iron Springs is large, and I've never had to wait long to get seated.  They are tolerant of dirt and dogs (outside seating), which attracts a variety of people.  I've seen a lot of hikers, bikers, cyclists, and a mish mash of other people here.

Some other good points are that they make their own beer and have a wide variety of food and beverages to choose from.  This is true for the kids too, there is a decent kids menu.  Both times I was here everyone enjoyed their food, although hunger goes that to people.  They even have a few healthy options like salads and broccoli as a side.  As a note, the regular portions are the typical restaurant huge.  I'm sure it's great for a guy or person with a large appetite, I ordered a kids burger.

The waitstaff both times I was here were friendly and got the order right, always good.  The second time I was here was with a dog and they brought out water too, nice.

The average points are the price.  Really, that is about it.

Some things that are slightly meh, the parking is shared with the rest of the plaza business.  You can park in the lots on either side, but it's not obvious.  Also, the bathroom is shared and you have to leave the restaurant to use it.

With a BIG caveat - for food - ONLY buy the nachos.

Having moved from SF to the North Bay, I can tell you - you will generally be unimpressed by the food in the North.  However, Iron Springs serves the best damn nachos ever.  It's all I get, and it's basically a meal for two (the large one is).

As for the beer - the coffee porter is a great and rare find.  Or if you're new there get the paddle - it's eye catching, and makes you feel like a giant drinking so many small beers in one sitting :)

We are regulars at Iron Springs. Go a couple times a month, at least. While I don't think the food is spectacular, it definitely works as a weeknight casual comfort food kind of thing. The fries are great, and you really, really need to try the nachos -- they're the best thing we've had there. Love their house habanero sauce, too. They make some great beer at Iron Springs - I particularly recommend the Chazz Cat Rye and Kolsch.

What makes Iron Springs special is the friendliness of the staff and the feeling that it's a real neighborhood kind of place. On nice days pretty much the entire town of Fairfax is out drinking beers at the picnic tables.

They have live music on Wednesday nights.

Yeah. You know what? I like this place.

You walk in and on the right, is the bar with flat screens-- usually with a game on.

And on the left, large dining area that (to me) resembles the inside of a sizzlers.
    Lots of "green" & wood.

The food is comforting,  and I have found that the leftover Buffalo wings are especially tasty, the next day!

Service has always been great, but I must say that it was extra impressive-- when my boyfriend and I went there last Friday.
Our server carried over 2 full pint glasses with his fingers, on one hand. Yes, his fingers.
It was pretty strange, but kinda cool. lol.

Not really a place for a romantic date (too many kids around).
Can't be smoochin' or carrying on a sexy convo, without hear kids yelling, "I want french fries!".

Met up with a great friend here for dinner and drinks.  Food is ok but the beer was exceptionally good.  Nice place near downtown Fairfax.  Kinda busy the night I went but got a seadt within 30 min.  Will come back for beer whenever I'm in town biking afterwards...

Amazing beer selection here, that is brewed on site. They have pretty delicious food as well and very friendly staff. The place can get really packed around dinner time and you might have to wait for a table. When it's nice outside there will be many people sitting out front enjoying beer and food. I've been here too many times to count and have only gotten mediocre food once (they didn't cook the chicken wings long enough), but other than that you can't go wrong with their food.
Try the epiphany ale, it's amazing.

Come on Marinites, this place does not warrant 4 stars and you know it. Yes, it's convenient, yes it's kid friendly, yes they do community stuff. But the food is terrible (uninspired and poorly executed). The place is visibly dirty (stained, sticky, gross). It's a shame that its taking up such prime real estate, and its unfortunate that they don't care more about serving good food, but they'll never get motivated to improve until we stop raving and giving them 4 star reviews.

Friendly service. Friendliest service we've had in years, actually. The super sweet bartender poured our tasters at 936pm even though last call had already happened. (Fairfax sleeps early on Monday nights, we learned too late.) Many thanks!!

During the winter hours, kitchen closes at 9. Kitchen at 930.

    We tasted:
Kolsch: Hands down my hubs favorite. Clear, crisp, cool, pure, light with "water locally sourced from Kent Lake."
Bears bourbon barrel aged (special for this week): slightly spicy, rich and warming with lots of velvet bourbon flavor. Heavy and satisfying.
Stout: like drinking 90% pure cacao. Almost took much chocolate but definitely thick and smooth. Lots of oat thickness. Satisfied my chocolate craving.
Porter; a little less chocolate and less thick than the stout. Probably BC it uses barley rather than so much oats.

No contest: best brewery local to us. Wish the kitchen were open so we could've eaten too. We will definitely be back. And many many thanks on the special "parting gift"! Totally made our week.

Yep, the beer is good.  There are 2-3 meals that I personally really like, and the appetizers.  The burgers and meat tend to be undercooked though, so you should check it before eating!  I really recommend the garlic fries too.  I'm allergic to dogs and don't care to eat near them at the outdoor tables, so I just don't eat outside.  Sorry to say the music tends to be dreadful, and you can't have a conversation because it is so loud.

I love the beer, there are many choices, and the best Kolsch.

The outside tables make dining out with kids and dogs simple.  The kids finish eating, and run and play in the adjacent plaza.

Vegetarian food at a pub is difficult to come by, and the house made veggie burger  isn't your usual frozen patty. The chile relleno is vegetarian, and surprisingly tasty.

Carnivores, of course, have many choices.   The pulled pork sandwich impressed my friend from LA, who is a BBQ connoisseur.

Just remember the rule, "Never order fish on Monday."  and you won't be awake at 4 a.m. yelping like I am.

I'll qualify by saying I've eaten here over a dozen times. The few times I ate at the restaurant it was pretty good. It's never been great but as my boyfriend says "for greasy bar food it's fine." I like that they have organic choices. And their sauces and caesar dressing's not bad. This gains them 2 stars.

THE PROBLEM is if you order out (whether in person or over the phone). Don't bother, really just don't bother. I have ordered out from here about 10 times now and they have gotten my order right once. That's right, 9 out of 10 times my order has been wrong. And not just "oh whatever, it's no big deal wrong." Oh no - horribly HORRIBLY wrong. Tonight was the final straw. I ordered a turkey sandwich with no bread (Yes I'm an unfortunate gluten intolerant person -- only I'm soooooo "intolerant" that I score off the charts on blood allergy tests and get physically ill if I eat even a tiny bit) yet they managed to "slip" 5 croutons underneath the turkey layers so that if I'd just cut into it to eat without flipping it over I would have eaten the bread. I asked for the cilantro dressing to be left off (HATE cilantro), they added it -- as a matter of fact they slapped on an extra thick layer everywhere. And she read the order back to us, on speakerphone so I know it wasn't the order taker who made the mistake - it was the bar or the kitchen (all to go orders go through the bar ?!?).

Other times I've ordered bread free Rueben's -- to get home and have them come without thousand island, without cheese, without sauerkraut or with raw cabbage instead of sauerkraut altogether. I've had the wrong fries, the wrong food, caesar dressing left out completely when ordering the caesar salad and the list goes on.

So there you have it "not bad for greasy bar food" as long as you don't mind getting anything BUT what you ordered if you order to go.

I do not know why but every time we have dinner here at Iron Springs the meal is terrible!  The only reason we go back is because it is close and we keep hoping that the food will be better.  The very first time we ate there it's was great, but every time since the food is terrible meaning the chicken it's raw.  The last two times we were there I order the chicken and both times is was raw in the middle. Really!!! Yes of course they didn't charge us but still come on!  What even made it worst was the female server was totally not there and we keep getting her as our server each time we go there.  She visits our table to take our order then to leave our check and then to get her money.  If we need anything we have to track her down or ask someone else.
Sorry we won't be back 3 times! your OUT!

Great beers! Its THE spot to head after a bike ride or hike on the back side of Tam, but be prepared to wait or share your table.   They are dog friendly for the tables on the side walk and the service is pretty good.
The owners are great with supporting charity and homebrewers.
Not a big fan of the food, but hey, you can't have everything. and who needs food when you have delicious beer!??

What a surprise. Not all of it is your typical pub grub. Loved that they served habanero salsa. I had the choc muc (grilled pork with guac, beans and rice.

What is really good is the beer. A great list. 12 on tap, mostly what they brew, plus a few guest brews.

Family friendly and a good place to catch a game.

I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today... Wimpy (the Popeye Character) would be satisfied by this burger!!! Off topic...have you seen the Popeye cartoon where wimpy is chasing the duck with his meat grinder, love that one, he has a bottle of ketchup in coat pocket!! they don't make'm like that anymore! and nobody makes a better burger than Iron Springs Brew Pub. says me and wimpy ack ack ack ack!

Hands down the best burger in the Fairfax area, are there any others? not really.
For what you get it's an amazing deal. A substantial toasted bun, pickles, lettuce, onion, tomato, all the ingredients are fresh and wonderful, they separate the fix'ns from the burger and fries in its own little recyclable box when you get it to go (which I do)  you build it when you get home and nothing is soggy. the french fries are potatoey tater tasting and the last time I got a burger there they literally piled over a pound of fries in the box, hot and delicious!! I wanna eat one know.

Another interesting fact, if your thirsty you can grab a beer while they make your burger, chances are you'll see someone you know. and you'll have two or three and then you'll feel kinda bold start talking to that cute girl from the coffee shop across the street and then end up.... that's a different story!

It may appear that not being a spandex clad biker or a parent of 2 kids  under age 8 are barriers to entry but not so.  All are welcome here, to sit out front and hoist a foamy, amber glass of brew or sidle up to an indoor table.  Venture much beyond that brew though, and you're definitely on a rocky, unmapped road.

The journey started with the fried calamari appetizer which was served with a nice side salad, some zippy green salsa, and squirted with something white that looked unappetizing but tasted okay.  Something was missing though, and I think it was salt, which would've brought out the absent flavors.

Iron Springs version of a Cobb Salad left me searching for flavor as well.  Their loose interpretation of a Cobb (rich, panko-crusted turkey strips that tasted like McNuggets) lacked the flavors of a Cobb.  The salad had avocado, bacon, and egg but no blue cheese taste, a flavorless dressing, and those turkey strips that seemed to belong to a whole different plate of food.

C described his pulled-pork sandwich as "very rich, not as good as the pulled-pork you make, and a little weird tasting" (hey, I make good pulled pork).  Garlic fries were just garlicky; again: missing salt.

No complaints on the Hamburger, the Chicken-Bacon Cheeseburger (filling and delicious, actually). the house made sodas (grapefruit, root beer), or the beer itself.

Iron Springs does nice things in the community, has a good friendly vibe, is certified "green", and looks awfully inviting on a warm day when the tables out front are filled.  A beer here is a fine idea.  Anything more I can't really vouch for.

Iron Springs is A-OK for a few beers and apps! Great casual place to stop after a hike in Marin -- with outdoor picnic tables and a low-key vibe inside, you definitely won't be out of place in your cycling or outdoor gear. Plus, they're into the Grateful Dead which is always a plus in my book.

Loved the roasted garlic and toasted bread - they do a good job on most of the pub style food (fries, etc). Wasn't as thrilled with my steak salad, I found the meat a little chewy and tough, although the veggies were nice and fresh.

I'd definitely come back, but will stick to burgers/fries and their apps next time.

Beer list is great. Fun place to come with a group of friends - plenty of room to spread out and take over if you get there early. Tip: They also have board games you can break out.

We were there on Sunday afternoon and the after church crowd rolled in and there were kids everywhere. If you want to avoid this, outside is usually a better bet.

This is the best place to casually meet up with large groups of friends in downtown Fairfax, hands down.

Since it's a restaurant, it's very accommodating for those (like me) with friends spanning a wide age range, thus it's perfectly fine for the under-21ers to sip on a hot cocoa as I chug away on an Epiphany Ale. The food is a bit pricey, but consistent in taste and quality, and I've never had a BAD meal here. The workers are always friendly and don't seem to mind if your group grows from two people to ten (like ours on Valentine's Day) - they'll find a table and won't give you crap for lacking reservations.

Now that I've recently moved to Fairfax, I predict that this will be a usual spot of mine in addition to Peri's and Gestalt Haus. Hooray!

After a great walk/hike/biking at nearby Phoenix Lake, this pub is a perfect blend of casual, fun, and great food. We just missed the live music they had on Saturday but the place was light and the mood upbeat.

For their Happy Hour (@$3.75 a pint) we had the JC Flyer IPA (Very good) and the Alsatian Pale Ale (good but not really all that special). The Free Range breaded Turkey Cutlet over an organic Cobb Salad was very large and excellent. The Nieman Ranch 1/2 lb mushroom and onion burger with Garlic fries was also perfectly done and really delicious.

Almost everyone mentions the fries here.

    I can see why.

The garlic fumes coming off these things would actually clear a nearby vampire den. And these fries remained wonderfully crunchy with a crisp crust surrounding a moist interior (my favorite potato combination no matter if it was fries or hash browns) from serving to the last bit. These are fantastic fries and, reeking garlic or not, deserve a try.

The only miss here was the perfunctory service by a waitress who was hard to find, never came back to ensure we were good with our meal.

We definitely will back on our next hike out this way.

I would like to give it zero stars, but the option isn't there.
Last week my husband, 11 year old boy and I went. We sat down, and my husband noticed diarrhea on the menu. My son jumped up, and showed his hands, pants, shoes, all covered in diarrhea. Poop that is.
The waitress sent the manager over, and she promised the owner would call and make it up to us.
Suffice it to say, we did not eat there and won't go back either.
How can people cleaning the table not notice stinky business all over the place...

    EDIT
I was emailed by Yelp to ask to change this review. A person made a complaint about it.( Probably the owner. )WHY? I have witnesses to this awful event, and now I will notify the authorities.

Do I have to not let the greater public know about this HUGE hygienic error???

There is nothing so fantastic and spending a long weekend backpacking on Mt. Tam, waking up the last day, Hiking up to the summit, enjoying the breathtaking views of the entire bay, and then back down, straight into Fairfax, walking up to Iron Springs and ordering a pint of beer and a plate of Nachos, there is no finer way to spend a weekend.

My experience is admittedly biased, but that first sip of beer and bit of luscious gooey cheese covered chips was fantastic. The next several dozen bites were just as good. The last dozen were tinged with sadness because I knew the end was near.

Luckily, just as tragedy seemed inevitable, and the bottom of the plate was sighted, I was given new cause for hope. The waitress arrived, this time bearing with her a plate of garlic fries and a sampler of the beer. The fries were fantastic, crisp, and full of flavor, dripping with fried goodness.

The beer was good, and Iron Springs offers a wider range than most other local breweries. Their IPA was fantastic, just the right amount of hop bitterness, the malt body working to balance it out nicely. There was nothing better to replace fluids and electrolytes after a long hike. The double IPA was a double, but it was a little to hoppy for my tastes. The tripel was very dark, and very Belgian tasting, a little to much for me. The harvest IPA was delightful, the fresh hops showing through with a nice grassy herbaceous flavor. I've forgotten the rest of the beers, but they were all tasty

The only reason they don't get five stars is because I walked in, covered in sweat stains, plopped down my backpack and still got served. Any place that saw fit to serve me in that condition is clearly somewhat questionable.

I hope that everyone who visits Iron Springs Pub and Brewery ends up having as good as an experience as I did last week.

Service is a solid 5, and food a solid 3. So I settled on a nice average of 4 stars.

Joe was our waiter and he made our experience very fun and nice. He really knew the menu and had no trouble making some great recommendations for snacks. We shared the pulled pork flat bread pizza, garlic fries, and onion strings. I am not a beer drinker, so I had a glass of wine which he recommended and it was good. He said even though it was one of the "cheaper" wines by the glass he thought it was good and that if I didn't like it he would get me something else....

Joe was funny... nothing like having a funny attentive waiter to make a good evening turn into a wonderful evening. Now the cutest part was, he came over to us at the end of our dinner and said "so I understand it's one of your birthdays". My girlfriend and I looked at him dumbfounded and he said "just go with me on this one"... he treated us to a nice dessert.

Although I don't dine with kids and so I don't normally notice kid friendly places to eat I found this place would be very kid friendly and there were a handful of families enjoying a nice dinner. The tables are spaced far enough apart so that you can have a private conversation. On Thursday nights they have a live band with out a cover charge. Next time in Fairfax you might want to check this place out and if Joe is working try to get him as your waiter. A true sweetie pie.

I don't go to Fairfax often. I don't have anything against it of course, sometimes it's just a little far. My ex-boyfriend lived on the Fairfax/San Anselmo border so I was there frequently for a while because we could do our favorite, and must I mention, responsible thing: walk and drink.

We would walk to Iron Springs with our flipflops on, making sure we had no ability to stack on the way home while our drunk asses reminisced on the small things of life. One of the small things was the Crippla beer that they released sometimes. Now that was a good brew. I can usually put back quite a few for a small girl. I'm only five feet tall and completely proportionate to my size gentlement (BTW) and these beers would definitely pack a punch. The great thing about buying a reasonably priced pitcher there if after we drank one, I didn't really feel that guilty anymore about eating my black bean nachos. Or anyone elses food at the table too to be candid.

Didn't love the service, my food was always too slow to come. Or maybe it's the fact that I drank too fast. Not really sure about that one.

Good to go to and sit on the benches outside to hang with your crew. Nothing fancy, I wore whatever was at the bottom of the bed while the rest of my clothes were in the dryer. And another highlight, it was close to the ice cream place, Fairfax Scoop, so I could get my total daily requirement of calories and fat in one sitting. Just impressive.

I'm a big fan of Iron Springs. It's a destination of choice for many a mountain biker returning from a loop on Tamarancho, and a great hangout for locals. And their beer shows why.

The Fairfax Coffee porter is tremendous, served through nitro, and worth the extra wait for your pour. (My barmaid the last time didn't exactly have the art nailed down, but ahh, bless her... she did try!) The Epiphany is an explosion of hoppy goodness in your mouth, and the Honey Bunny is supremely refreshing after the afforementioned bike ride.

And that's just what I had yesterday. Hic!

Their food is hit and miss. Typical bar fare, their nachos, burgers, etc. are all tasty and good. Their ribs come caked in fat, and were inedible. Seafood tacos are okay, their meatloaf is most tasty.

Ambiance depends on who you are, and when you're there. It is, as many have noted, a kid friendly place, which may not be the atmosphere you want in a bar. In the evenings though, live music and beer flowing after the kids have gone to bed, while discussing conspiracy theories with the locals is a fun time.

It's a hike to get to if you're just visiting the Bay Area, but if you like nature, a little zaniness, and good beer, head on out to Fairfax, and check out Iron Springs. If you see the witch in the purple crushed velvet robe wandering around, offer to buy her a pint.

Easily the best brew pub in Marin County, and a mecca for bicyclists and family dining.  Mike and Anne Altman have created a fun place, with live music, great beer and very good food that has become one of the most popular gathering places in Fairfax.

The beers are fine and quite consistent. The amber is a solid mid-range beer, and the ales are quite hoppy. Get a sampler if you aren't sure of your preferences.  The food is well prepared, and sometimes innovative -- for example, try the Fuji Apple salad or the Tiger Shrimp salad, both of which can be a full meal.  They do great burgers and fries too, and sometimes have excellent specials.  If something with a Mexican name shows up, try it -- the chef is from south of the border.

Mike's musical preferences are wide ranging, and you will often hear bluegrass, folk, Grateful Dead, reggae, or other iconic music from the '60's and '70's.  The local live bands that perform on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons are a treat.  You can get schedule info on their web site.  They have a separate room that will accomodate about 15 people, or can arrange tables for groups of 20 or more.

Lots of families with kids dine there early in the evening, especially Tuesday nights, when there is a special.  Later in the evening the bar is crowded, and you'll meet local business folks, town council members, lots of people that know each other.  Highly recommended.

Awesome beer and food!!!  And stumbling distance from home!!  Yeeeehaaaawwwww!!!!

    3/28/08 update-----------
Now that I live in SF, I don't get to go here as much anymore.  I find myself waking in the middle of the night, screaming for more coffee porter, only to find water in the pint glass next to my bed.  The beer there is so good when it touches your lips (couldn't help the old school reference...)

Went to DYK and had one of the best reuben sandwiches ever.  It was perfectly toasted with saukeraut, corned beef, and smothered with thousand island!  I've been yearning to eat this sandwich again since I first tasted it last Sunday. The corned beef was not too salty which is rare to find in a reuben and the thousand island was not too sweet.  Just right for me.

I am giving Iron Springs Pub & Brewery five stars because along with the awesome reuben sandwich fantasies I have been having this week I was also throughly happy with the steamed veggies on the side of my beautiful reuben sandwich.  The veggies took up half the plate and were composed of carrots, zuchinnis, and bok choy lightly sauteed in olive oil and pieces of garlic.  I wish every brewery offered such a great steamed veggies option!

Note: I was starving so I may have been imagining how wonderful the food was but I would definately go back again.
