The ISS TRIO is composed of Northern, Central & Southern California jazz musicians, who collaborate five to six times per year for the sole purpose of creating spontaneous jazz improv. Â They record live at Fantasy Studios at Zaentz Media Center, Berkeley. Â What distinguishes ISS is their melancholy and deep soulful improvisation. Â ISS Trio has the mpact of inspiring listeners - new to jazz or veterans of the genre, because of their variety of skills. Â As keyboardist, John San Agustin has training not only in jazz piano, but also in harmonium, and other classical Indian instruments. Â Due to this, they allow a soulfulness, a space for each instrument to emerge. Â No one drowns the other out. Â On "Mediterranean Revisited", a slow paced piece, solos delve into the strength of each musician. Â Carl Sacco on drums is perfectly understated when needed and at other times takes the lead. Â Kevin Irwin in bass holds the trio together, blending the sounds beautifully. Â As a non-jazz expert, but a serious music lover, this release inspired me. Â Highly recommended.
