An awesome brunch spot w/ LIVE music... recommended by my SiSter!
- Small and Intimate atmosphere. Â Cozy and romantic!
-Delicious and tasty brunch menu. Â A real continental breakfast!
My order:
*Eggs Benedict*
-Perfect Eggs (Both eggs were still running by the first cut through. Simply the best I've had thus far!!!!)
-The right amount of Hollandaise Sauce used.
-English muffin texture was just right.
-Hash brown was crispy!
-Prefect portion size for me. Â Stuffed happily!!
My Fiancé's order:
*Breakfast Burger* w/ Fries
-Perfect temperature! (Asked for Medium and got exactly what he wanted)
-Super juicy (extremely moist meat)
-Flavorful and seasoned very well
-Unique (The burger was on top of an english muffin)
-Delicious overeasy egg on top of burger.
-Breakfast Burger really means egg on top of burger hehe
-Fries were so crispy!
-A little messy to eat though, but it's ok.. the thick napkin helped!
We both ordered the same Coffee.
The French press coffee is just ok, not that strong as expected.
Super friendly waitress with a very nice smile.. Attentive service! *The Fiancé gave more tips! =)
The LIVE music sounds so soothing. Â It gives a very nice feeling to customers. Â Enjoyable to listen to while eating.
End Remarks: Â
This is definitely one of Forest Hills, Queens' finest dining places. Â
Highly recommended for BRUNCH~!
Mister took me for dinner recently - Â if I had my druthers, we'd eat here more often! Â
He opted for a Urqueil Pilsner and I downed a glass of Rosé, while we shared the  warm Olives, Hummus, Tomato & Mozzarella and Mac & Cheese w/Chorizo. YUM!
The place was almost packed and service was a bit slow but not annoyingly so. Â I'm living to try the Brunch here.
In a desperate bid to get two of our friends to come out, we chose J&N's cuz it was close to where they were staying. 4 of us walked in around midnight on a Saturday. They were pretty full and despite there being some intermittent space, it wasn't possible for all of us to sit together. So we sat at the bar.
We got a bottle of Malbec, which was very reasonable priced (about $35 if I remember correctly). I asked one of the waitresses if they could organize the sitting area make space for us. Â This meant making a couple of smaller groups get up and close the gaps between them so that there would just enough space for a table of 4 in one corner. We had our table in less than 5 minutes.
We didn't try any of the food but it was a great place to sit and chat for an hour. Â The service was excellent throughout. Â Two of our friends wanted a smoke break and we ended up chatting outside for 20 mins since the weather was great that night. Our table was untouched when we came back. There was absolutely no rush from the wait staff. Chill spot, good atmosphere, reasonable prices and a group of fantastic ladies helping you along the way makes this wine bar worth visiting.
The first time I came here was for my anniversary. Â We were looking for a nice quiet spot where we could just relax and have a nice evening together. Â We first found this place on Yelp actually and while reading all of the great reviews we decided to check it out. Â Once we got there, we were very happy with our decision. Â The food here is excellent. Â I really recommend the charcuterie board- all of the meats are fresh and the crostinis are awesome. Â I have been back there several times since and have had a great experience each time. Â The staff is friendly, the food is delicious and the atmosphere is very laid back. Â They also have a nice happy hour that runs until 8PM so its a perfect spot to unwind after a long day at work. It is definitely becoming my favorite spot on Austin Street.
Review Source:We had brunch here a few weeks ago. It's a cool spot with good food and live music for bunch. We tried their specials of the day - grits with shrimp and sausage and curry scrambled eggs, sausage and potatoes. The food was delicious though the grits were a bit heavy for brunch. Their candied bacon was a nice side. Coffee was served in individual French presses and was very good. Over all, it's a great spot for brunch in the area.
Review Source:Hitting up this place on a Saturday night you find an energetic crowd and you have to hope you get a seat. Â We were lucky and scored a table in the back. Â Our waitress was very friendly and attentive and service was quick even with the crowd.
We ordered a couple of glasses of red, they were only so so. Â The food on the other hand was great. Â The lamb meatballs served over a cucumber and tomato salad were moist and delicious. Â The mac and cheese with chorizo was divine. Â The pasta was perfectly al dente (which is not usually the case with mac and cheese dishes) and the dish was creamy with a hint of spice from the chorizo; yum, yum, yum!
A great spot to visit to have a bite, a drink and chill for a bit.
I took a date here on a Monday night expecting a quiet intimate atmosphere from some of the reviews. It wasn't exactly that, more like quiet for a bar. The place is casual and does not take it self to seriously which is more my style. The food and price was more then reasonable so I was pretty happy over all. Other things to note is that the menu is small, not a problem imo but may be for a picky eaters.
Review Source:If you like apps and drinks, then this place is perfect! The bf took me here on our anniversary so we could have some wine and noms before getting dessert and I really enjoyed it. The lamb meatballs were just as good as everyone is saying and the artichoke dip was warm and creamy. All the food really did go wonderful with the wine that we ordered. The place felt intimate and the service was great. I definitely want to come back and try some of their other stuff.
Review Source:My boyfriend and I took a friend from DC to brunch and I had seen Jack and Nellie's  earlier. Cute place with great decor. I had the Eggs Benedict which was delicious and my boyfriend had the Curry Scrambled Eggs which was unexpectedly good! Really want to go back soon. My friend loved the old world ambience of the place. And the service was friendly and fast. Not cheap like diners can be but not expensive for brunch either.
Review Source:All around good experience. food was delicious, albeit, extremely salty, especially the rib special we had this past Saturday night. (Was till thirsty the following morning.) Or maybe that was the bottle of Reisling I finished off. As a few reviews have mentioned the mac cheese/chorizo combo was delicious, and the lamb meatballs.
It's very loud and seems to attract a very diverse crowd, both age wise and ethnicity.
The Manager that night seemed to be doing all roles from host, to waiter, to busboy. Not sure if they're short-handed, or that guy just likes to hustle.
I could see later in the evening this being a good place for a date, after dinner drink or to meet a woman with a discerning palate. (but that's just me.)
Did I come on an off day? I found my entire experience here unsatisfying.
It's a cute little place, but had way too much going on. On a Sunday morning, they had a couple of younger kids playing the cello and keyboard (I think) in the corner to set the ambiance, which is weird because it would be more fitting during the evenings to set the mood for dinner dates. The music was great and the kids are talented, but did it have to be so loud? The music, plus the bad acoustics and sound system, and the amount of people talking in the restaurant, it's the hungovers' worse nightmare.
The brunch menu isn't much to impress. On the menu are the expected 2 eggs your way, omelets, yogurt, and can't remember much else. They have brunch specials, but it was listed on a chalkboard so high up you don't notice it until after you've ordered. The waitstaff does not point it out to you either. Juices aren't fresh (Tropicana). Coffee is a little weak.
My 2 eggs over-easy were fine and the hash was tasty, but the sausage links were standard. Something I can find in the frozen aisle at the market up the block. Friend ordered the cheddar omelet with tomatoes, but was underwhelming. Looked plastic-y and not appetizing. We also ordered the candied bacon. After one bite, we wish we didn't. It was way too salty. The sweet from the candied sugar didn't and couldn't counter the saltiness. FYI - the candied aspect was cane sugar sprinkled on top of the bacon and was either put under the broiler or torched. I wish it was given a little more love by basting it with maple syrup on the grill.
Like I said, the whole experience was unsatisfying. Maybe dinner is better. But meh... I don't want to take my chances.
What a cute lil' place! Trendy, comfortable, quaint. The gentle hum of small groups of friends and double dates sets the casual mood for J&N's. My aunt, mother, and I sat next to the open garage door on a beautiful summer evening. The fresh air infiltrated the small restaurant and misted the summer feel over every crevice square foot. I could easily envision people in the neighborhood knighting J&N as "their usual spot."
The menu specializes in crafty American cuisine, served tapa style, perfect for sharing. The dishes are reasonably priced, approximately $8/tapa. An extensive wine and craft beer selection compliments the innovative food menu, and invites you to unwind after a long week. I ordered the portabella mushroom quesedilla with corn relish and sour cream for a small dinner--delicious! I would be remiss if I didn't mention the lamb meatballs and mac and cheese with chorizo...Although I did not order those dishes, word on the street claims that they are must-haves. I was not that hungry at the time.
If you are in the Forest Hills area for any reason, I definitely encourage you to spend an hour or two here.
There have been some very thorough reviews on this place, but I just wanted to add my two bits - this place is great! Wonderful and varied selection of wines. Great cheese plate, amazing artichoke dip, good service and $6 glasses of wine during happy hour! Low key place with great music to wind down, great place for a date. Classy addition to the neighborhhod. Will be back to try more things!
Review Source:I believe it was the band Foreigner that coined the term "I wanna know what love is". Well, Jack & Nellie's coined the theme of having great wine, great food, and great ambiance in Forest Hills. The selection of wine is classy and tasteful and the food is thoughtful and deliberate.
I came here with my lovely girlfriend for a date. The place was cozy and romantic, we were seated next to the front windows where we watched an intense storm, with lightening and all. The background music was very nice, good mix of some old and new tunes, all of them helping to set a good mood for a date.
The wine list had your sure bet European, South American and American wines. A healthy mix of pricey and affordable wines, choose to your liking. I ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. A nice smooth fruity up front taste with a crisp airy finish. If a wine doesn't get you at least a kiss after the first glass, I'd suggest getting a Pinot Noir.
The food portions were perfect to casually eat without filling yourself to the point of hopeless stupidity and food coma. We split chorizo macaroni and cheese and lamb meatballs. The chorizo macaroni and cheese was a splendid, creamy and sinful. The chorizo was a welcomed bit of naughtiness on an otherwise angelic and innocent dish, spicy and sensual this dish pleased in calming whimsy. The lamb meatballs added a lively, brighter contrast to its heavier counterpart. The lamb meatball was tender, juicy, and begging for special attention. Between sips of sauvignon, the lamb enhanced the crisp finish of the wine. It was aromatic and refined the equivalent of what I imagine talking to a french speaking Bradley Cooper would be like.
If you're around Forest Hills looking for a nice place to have a date night... this is the place you want to go. Trust me, it's hella romantic and the wait staff is considerate not to butt-in during a sincere moment of staring and hand holding. Great STUFF!
They have a great selection of bottled beers, no taps unfortunately. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable in helping us select a beer we would like. We had the cheese platter ($15 for 3 types of cheeses) but was not impressed with any of the cheeses. I am definitely returning to try the wines and the mac and cheese that I read about on the other reviews.
Review Source:I personally love all the new establishments opening up in Forest Hills!
I went to Jack & Nellie's a few months ago and sat at the bar with a friend, ordered a bottle of wine and almost all of their small plates. The wine was great and the food was pretty tasty. Because I enjoyed it I called up a few friends to come meet up with us where we ordered more wine and more food.
Overall the food was good, the service was good and the patrons were friendly.
We had planned our trip here in advance and decided we would eat here if we could get one of the tables at the windows where there's a bit more space for kid stuff and where we wouldn't feel like we were bothering others. Weekend brunch in May was not crowded. We sat at open windows  with stroller outside. Had high chairs for both kids, with drawing paper and crayons for them. Finally a Forest Hills restaurant without a TV!
This is more Manhattan than Queens in ambience, decor, and quality of food in particular. Lovely place, glad we tried it out finally. Brunch french toast and candied bacon, in particular, were atypical of local fare and quite tasty and enjoyable.
THIS PLACE ROCKS!!!!!!! Â The food was delicious, reasonably priced and the staff was really amazing. Â I ordered the eggs benedict and it came with bacon (I'm just not a huge bacon fan), so I tried to remove it, but it was really too much, so the waitress, without being called over, saw the look on my face and hurried over and asked if everything was ok. Â When I told her I did not realize there would be bacon in my dish, she immediately took it back and brought me a new plate within a few moments (did not only replace the eggs, but even the potatoes were brand new!!) Â Did all of this with a smile and never once made me feel even a tiny bit bad. Â
IN LOVE.
Have been to Jack & Nellie's a few times for drinks and think it is a great little spot to unwind. Â Excellent service at the bar and great happy hour prices. Â
Had brunch there today and was very very disappointed in the food and service. Â The waitress was very polite but not attentive at all. Â The food was maybe a 3 out of 10... $13 burger was overcooked, not prepared as requested, and fries were barely cooked. Â Beau had the cornbeef hash and thought it was more like a bowl of mashed potatoes than the traditional dish. Â It is a bad sign when you stop somewhere else on your way home from brunch because you are still hungry : (
Will return to J&N's to sit at the bar for drinks definitely. Â Will not be returning to eat there again.
This place is exactly what this neighborhood needed! A nice little wine/tapas bar with a neighborhood feel, totally unpretentious and super friendly.
I have been there for happy hour, dinner, even Valentine's Day and while it was busy and reservations needed, they were able to find a spot for my husband and I without any pretense or attitude. They are always trying out new wines to showcase and their selection is very tasty. The tapas are delicious with lovely cheese and charcuterie boards and their lamb meatballs are delicious!
I pumped my fist when this place finally opened. After a month's waiting time, I entered and ordered. The wine list is decent, the prices are reasonable to high, depends on what you get and the food is pretty good but not great. I think with a little bit a work it can be great. The ambiance is there but the food is not very creative and they tend to all be on the heavier side (excluding cheese and meat plates). In the end, I would go back but I hope they do a better job at pairing or complimenting their foods and wines. I would have given this place 3.5 stars. The lack of knowledge on wine is definitely a minus... maybe it was just my server.
I anxiously await changing my review to a five star when things improve.
Wine and good food? Yes please! Â I've been here a couple of times now, and both times were great. It's a cozy spot with a really nice staff that can recommend wines if you're not too knowledgeable in that area. The garlic and artichoke dip is amazingly tasty and most likely bad for your health, but it's really good :-)
Review Source:We needed a spot like this in FH! Manhattan has casual but chic little spots like this on every corner, but we've got... golf claps... Austin Ale House and that sports bar near the liquor store on Austin. Womp.
Had a solid brunch here this past Sunday, St. Patrick's Day. Non-greasy Eggs Benedict, with thick cut bacon and toasty English muffins. Hollandaise sauce lacking a little. Delish side potatoes.
I've been here for happy hour and enjoyed the spinach dip and toasted bread app as well.
I hate that people compare this place to Danny Browns. Â This place is no Michelen star restaurant. Â I wish they would work out their tapas a bit better. Â Maybe dates? Deviled eggs? Shrimp? The menu to me is boring. The Mac and cheese is delicious as are the cheese and meat plate. Â I just wish there were better food options.
Review Source:I'm giving this place three stars even though the rumbles in my stomach are signaling me (via morse code or some Indian dialect, I can't be sure) to deduct a star. The wine list is ok, the beer list is...ok. Really, that's all I can say about either. For a wine bar, the list is pretty mediocre, and I wish our server knew a bit more about the offerings, both wine and beer. She was perfectly friendly and attentive, however.
Now, on to the food. I had the Manchego quesadillas, boyfriend had the Angus Beef sliders, and we've both been feeling a bit queasy since we left the place last night (me than him, which leads me to believe my dish was the culprit). While I doubt it's serious, I know neither of us tolerates grease very well, and both plates were, um, swimming in it. Blech.
To be honest, even though we live so close, I doubt we'll be returning any time soon. The wine/beer lists leave much to be desired, and I'd really rather down a few slices of Nick's Pizza (yum) across the street than attempt another dinner here.
The only reason I am not giving this place 5 stars is because in my opinion the price is very high even for Forest Hills. Other then that food was great, try the mac and cheese and spinach deep. Wonderfull and helpfull staff, great wine selection and best coffee out side of Europe. Highly recomened for night out with friends, not so much for intimate evening as space is small and tends to get crowded.
Review Source:Disappointed but I'm willing to give it another try.
No comparison to Danny Brown's, but the effort to emulate is obvious. Â It fails to measure up as far as menu, service and quality, BUT... it is a welcome addition to the Austin Street vicinity as described by other reviewers.
When I dined there, the wait staff was amateurish and inexperienced. Perhaps they were finally trained and have improved with time or were replaced.
There were 2 chicken dishes at the time and they were the same shredded chicken salad, served in 2 ways with different names. The menu is very limited as it is, and this was just plain lazy.
As opposed to Danny Brown's, this is a casual place with a quiet and comfortable atmosphere, and a bar to hang out.
Forest hills needed this!!! After Q thai bistro, Ascan ave was a dark and lonely street... jack & nellies is laid back, personal and has tasty small plates that will fill you up in a satisfying way! Eve the bartender is awseome! great to bring a date or just meet a group of friends to bullshit with and share a good time!
Review Source:After the demise of the sad excuse for a wine bar that existed prior to Jack and Nellie's, I was almost afraid to hope for a chill, cool, adult, wine bar with good wines and yummy food. Â Yet from the second I walked into Jack and Nellie's, I was pretty sure it was an entrance I would be making again and again. Â The wine list isn't enormous, but there's a really nice selections of wines by the glass, and a few nicer bottles if you want to go that route. We got a bottle of the Priorat, which was unknown to me but was an awesome choice. Â
We shared the mac and cheese with chorizo, the hummus, and the quesadilla with manchego and mushroom and a jalapeno corn relish. Â I asked them to go light on the cheese in the quesadilla and it was outstanding - perfectly balanced, and a good portion - not tiny but not some huge flying saucer of tortilla and cheese (for that, go to Tap House). The mac and cheese is out of this world - seriously. THAT will definitely happen again. The hummus was nothing crazy special, but it's hummus and pita so... it was hummus and pita. Â The portions are tapas, so nothing is huge, but that's what I like about Jack and Nellie's - good wine and delicious snack. These are the basic ingredients for my own slice of Heaven.
Decor is nice - dark wood, dim lighting, cozy. Bartender was cool and knowledgeable (we sat at the bar), and we met the owner, who was super friendly and welcoming.
I'm definitely glad to report that Jack and Nellie's is doing it right. I'm stoked to have a place that's open late to go after work (at my restaurant) for a glass of wine. Â
Word of warning to the drunk coeds who swarm Austin street on the weekend: Stay far away from Jack and Nellie's. Far far away.
A wine bar in Forest Hills!? The hood needed a place like this. Ive been waiting for months after seeing the signage put up wondering what it could be....
This a "grown and sexy" bar. No TVs. Just good wine, small plates, and a romantic, dark and chill vibe. I love that the music being played was alternative also. The cure, pixies etc. My kind of place.
We came here on Friday night without having dinner first, which I would NOT recommend doing. Yes they serve small plates but even if you order several its not a sufficient dinner unless you like having a slider, a quesadilla, and a meatball as your dinner. (I prefer a protein, a salad, a veggie....) we ordered a bottle of malbec which was a perfect temperature a little cold not room temp and a cheese board of 3 cheeses, lamb meatballs and mushroom and manchego quesadillas. The small plates of food were great, I loved the meatballs and the corn salsa that came with the quesadillas but again I would come back for a snack or lunch not when you are starving.
The service was good. The bar was pretty full on a Friday early evening.
My only complaint is the seating arrangement. We were too close to another couple. And seeing as how this is a date night or catching up with friends kind of bar its a little awkward to hear other people conversations.
Nothing is overpriced on the menu - wine was a little over $30 and the plates are less than $10 each.
All in all a great bar to have a glass of wine and a small bite and listen to cool music. I hope its always like that!
